A submarine can't simply open a window.

Every breath changes the atmosphere.

Every person consumes oxygen.

Every person produces carbon dioxide.

Water has to be produced, purified, recycled, and carefully managed.

Inside a submarine, the atmosphere is a carefully controlled environment.

Oxygen must be continuously replenished.

Carbon dioxide must be removed.

Specialized scrubbers use chemical processes to capture CO₂ and keep the atmosphere within acceptable limits.

Water presents another engineering challenge.

A submarine crew needs enormous quantities of fresh water for drinking, food preparation, hygiene, and other operations.

Carrying all of that water would add enormous mass.

So submarines can produce fresh water from seawater using systems such as distillation or reverse osmosis.

Water can also be treated and reused wherever practical.

That turns the submarine into something much more complicated than a ship.

It's a closed environmental system.

The crew is constantly interacting with the atmosphere and water systems.

Their waste becomes part of the engineering problem.

Their breathing changes the air.

Their activities generate heat and humidity.

Their water consumption affects system demand.

And every system has to work reliably for long periods.

Engineers therefore build layers of monitoring, redundancy, filtration, chemical treatment, and emergency capability into the submarine's life-support architecture.

Because at sea, there is no convenient repair shop nearby.

A malfunction isn't simply uncomfortable.

It can become a serious survival problem.

Submarine life support is essentially environmental engineering performed inside a steel pressure vessel.

Air.

Water.

Temperature.

Humidity.

Waste.

Energy.

Every variable has to be controlled.

And every subsystem has to work together.
