Empathy and enemy-love (chapter 49)

About this episode

Episode 34 looks at chapter 49, which is all about loving your enemies and staying faithful to the unfaithful. It has such strong resonances with the teachings of Jesus that it is impossible not to see a connection, but we're going to take it a lot deeper today.

I start the episode by contemplating just how difficult it is to really learn how to love your enemies. The rest of the content is divided into three sections:

  1. Empathy - indiscriminate, unconditional empathy is central to enemy love
  2. Seeing the antagonisms - becoming aware of cultural ideological conflicts and scapegoating
  3. The principle of attraction - a life in touch with the Tao or filled with Spirit of Christ doesn't need to evangelize "offensively" all the time; there is a vision of "attraction" in the Old Testament, the New Testament, and of course the Tao te Ching
