Elizabeth Line Passenger Dragged by Train: Safety Measures Urged

0:00On March 4, a recent report from the real accident investigation branch highlights a scary incident on the Elizabeth line in West London. A passenger's hand got trapped in the closing doors of a westbound train as they tried to board. The train pulled away, dragging the person about 17 meters before platform staff and another passenger freed them. The investigation found the driver closed the doors too soon while people were still getting on and off. The door system failed to detect the trapped hand and the driver didn't notice before moving off. Back then, the operator MTR had safety measures in place to prevent these trap and drag risks, but they weren't effective enough. TFL called it a distressing event and has since added new signs and platform markings at the station to help prevent repeats. The passenger likely suffered only a minor injury, though investigators couldn't reach them for details. Now, with DTS real operations taking over the line this past May, the RAAB made five recommendations. They urged DTS to better manage trap and drag risks and TFL to improve driver's views from the cab while checking out new tech options.
