Ed Sheeran on Game of Thrones Backlash: A Surprise Gift

He appeared in season 7 episode 1 as a lannister soldier singing by campfire. This happened back in July 2017, right after his huge album Divide dropped, with the hit song, Shape of You, Everywhere. Other musicians had cameos in the show too, like Cole plays drummer at the Red Wedding, Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, and Chris Stapleton as a white. Walker, bands such as Sigour Rose, of Monsters and Men, and Mastodon also showed up as soldiers or performers, often without much fuss. Fans and critics hit back hard at Sheeran's role, sparking big online debates. He thinks it felt jarring because he was so omnipresent at the time, at the peak of his fame. Sheeran shared that the cameo was meant as a surprise gift for actress Maisie Williams, a big fan of his music. Sophie Turner accidentally spoiled it a Comic Con that year, while sitting next to her.
