Eagle Rescue: Teamwork Saves Baby Birds

0:00In Birmingham today, March 19, heavy rains and strong winds not down an eagle nest at Gulf State Park on Sunday night. Two young eglots fell to the ground, but staff from the Orange Beach Wildlife Center quickly stepped in to rescue them. A naturalist arrived Monday morning and spotted the parents circling overhead. She pushed through thick brush and debris to find the baby's safe on the forest floor along the Gofer Tortoise Trail. The team treated the eglots right away for mild dehydration and a bit of internal bleeding. They also noted injuries that needed more expert attention, leading to a transfer to the Auburn University Raptor Center. Meanwhile, exams revealed one eglot with a fractured humorous bone and the other with the fishing hook lodged in its toe from some earlier mishap. Specialists there are handling the full recovery. As of Wednesday, both eglots are stable and improving well. Wildlife groups say it shows how teamwork and rehab and conservation makes all the difference.
