E84 Changes Not Excuses

Hi Friends,

In this episode I talk about:

When we practice self awareness it can be easier to make excuses rather than changes when we become aware of faults that we have. But improving your mental health means not making the excuses but the changes.

0:00When we practice self-awareness, we become aware of our faults. Hi, I'm Scarlett Classic, and welcome to Classic Advice, a mental health podcast that is guidance for resilient souls and cring-com amid the chaos. When we become aware of our faults, it's important to take accountability for them and not make excuses, but make changes. And that is a very easy thing to say. I realize that, that's the whole reason why I wanted to expand on it in this episode. self-awareness is the reflection stage of working on our mental health.

1:04So by listening to a podcast or reading a mental health book or self-help book or even talking to friends and family, they might point things out to us and make us self-aware of some faults that we have. However, it's, I don't know, human nature, but it's very reasonable if your default is to then go into defensive mode and defend your actions. Instead of taking accountability for your faults, you make excuses for them and then no changes are made. When we take accountability for our faults and say, yes, I am now aware that I lock patients or whatever it may be. We're not making excuses anymore and we look for solutions so that we can make changes.

2:16The changes aren't going to be necessarily easy because if we do something by habit, that's something that we do automatically that we don't even really think about. What's a good example of this? For example, being pessimistic by default when something happens and you get angry about it because you've lost control of something. For example, the water froze in our camper this morning and even though me and my husband were bombed out about it, it's not really the end of the world. We can thaw our pipes and in a few hours, it hasn't happened yet, but fingers crossed nothing actually burst or is broken and we will have water again. If something did burst or break, then we'll have to look into what it was and then fix

3:19it. But there's two reactions that we can have. One is anger for the loss of control of frozen pipes and the absolute headache of not having coffee this morning, which is a big deal in this household just so that you're aware. And taking accountability, not making excuses, it is what it is. We can't control the weather and we'll make changes. We'll just not get angry about it and deal with the problem as the problem arises. This week, I hope you have the courage to not make excuses, but to go ahead and make some changes. Thank you for tuning in to Clausecify's Guidance for Resilient Souls.

4:22May you stay anchored in what studies you, rise resilient through what challenges you and carry calm into whatever comes next. Take care, love you, bye.
