E50 - Sounds of Argentina: Cumbia & Cuarteto

In Argentina, there are two rhythms you don’t just listen to—you live them: Cuarteto and Argentine cumbia.
One was born in the hills of Córdoba, the other in the working-class neighborhoods of Greater Buenos Aires. Together, they move massive crowds, shift the mood of an entire city, and even sneak their way into everyday language.

It doesn’t matter if you’re in a packed club, hanging out on the sidewalk with neighbors, or riding the bus—when these rhythms kick in, something happens. Hands go up, smiles spread, and your body starts moving on its own.

But to really understand why they have that effect, we need to take a little trip back in time.
