E39 - The Infernal Gauchos: Argentina’s Untold War for Independence
About this episode
Did you know that in Salta there was a group of gauchos in red ponchos who made an entire Spanish army panic? With barely any weapons but a brutal level of strategy, Güemes’ “Infernales” turned Northern Argentina into a nightmare for the royalists—using ambushes, lightning attacks, and local knowledge that a professional army just couldn’t match. How did they pull it off? Why didn’t Buenos Aires fully back them?
This episode tells the epic (and often overlooked) story of Martín Miguel de Güemes, the Salta strongman who helped stop Spanish invasions and made it possible for San Martín to move forward with his liberation plan. We’ll also look at how his story ends—and the key role women played in this fight. The episode is entirely in Argentine Spanish.
