1:01Eastbounded Down. We are headed to Orlando and I am hopping on Interstate 20 right now. We're going to head that way. About six, maybe seven hours from when I started and the guys have been talking on all star this morning. I know that Dave, KB5, UTY and Tim, NW-9F are both headed towards Florida. Tim has stopped to make a couple of pota contacts along the way, pota activations. Dave is left out yesterday and stayed at a RV park somewhere in Louisiana and he's going to make it to Florida tonight. So, I'm not sure exactly where, but they are headed that way and they were on all star earlier. So, let's see if we can catch them on all star. I'm trying to call out on 6.52 as much as I can, trying to get activity on two meter FM simplex while on a road trip, but what I said that we should all be trying to do, that node right there running in the dash of the truck is a

2:04dual mesh-chastic node. It's got two hell-tech V3s in it. One of them is running mesh-chastic, one of them is running mesh-core and it's just standard firmware on both. Look at that periodically and see what kind of stations we are seeing on both mesh-chastic and mesh-core and that's going to be running during the AMFES this weekend. I'm going to leave it on the default firmware, let that run. The AMCation firmware will be running. I got a couple of nodes with me, so AMCation firmware will be running on a couple of them, but I'm going to have at least one, maybe two nodes that I'm just going to leave running on default firmware because there will be people on both. There will be people who watched videos and noted update to the AMCation firmware and there will be people who don't know that. I talked to K and Boise and K Jason, and I have successfully built a mobile educator down a forestry pie used for a problem that could work in a forestry pie scene room to kind of minimize the immense equipment I'm using to try to get it used to set up. And I finally got the mobile educator for working using diarwood and busies and ddpounds and the other ones, but I wanted to learn diarwood

7:17and, wow, it's a little bit hairy, but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. And I've got that part working. I don't think I can do it as good as he can, but yeah, you're lucky to be right. It's a nice, multi-purpose piano room where it is, and these things, like, move your hand. It's like it's a little bit easier to be handy. Yeah, good deal. I put together a pretty simple setup. I took the VGC in 7500 radio, and I put an arm a lot cage around it, put it in the bag, and then I bought an Android tablet, just stayed with it, and I still got Ed Fong Japles in it, with one of those pote of 20 masks. I haven't actually used it yet. I was going to use it in Galveston a couple of weeks ago, and I just, with the weather and everything, the fact we didn't go to the park, I had originally planned to. I didn't get a chance to use it, but that's going to be a portable digi-peater that I carry around that runs APRS Druid. So pretty simple setup, really, of course, there's, you know, dozen ways to do it, but yeah, it'll be nice to have something like that in certain environments. I think you might have hit a weekend button to tell you other coverage is there, but they got some most of that up right here.

I was noticing on the street that my BFO group were showing signal when the hospital radio was transmitting. Is the second VFO on a UHF channel? Interval by VHF. Okay, is your all-star node on VHF also? Yes, yes. Okay. Okay, yeah, maybe just interference then. I don't know. I was hearing some

I don't usually hear that, but I was hearing some bleed over on my Yezu this morning when the all-star, when you guys were talking on all-star, it only happened like every now and then. It didn't happen every time, and my all-star node is on UHF on 437 megahertz, and I was hearing it on my ID5100, which was wanted to turn a local 440 repeater. So, again, it was off and on. It wasn't the whole time, and I never heard that before, so I was definitely getting interference from something from the all-star node at one point in time, and I'd switched it over to a VHF channel, and that pretty much took care of it, but I thought that was kind of weird. Anyway, I can start a jump in there. This is what you were doing. Jim, just a quick question with it. How are you running like a clear node? What's my move on, all-star? What do you have? I have an all-star node. You are on VHF. I think it's 1.3. What's 3.5 or 1.4? When you're transmitting your, uh, your, uh, age or radio, uh, on high power or running on low. I have anything wrong with my experience. The amount of kind of what James was saying, I got my all-star on the truck,

10:26and if I, you know, obviously if I antenna or whatever, uh, this is extraordinarily my thought truck, you know, running any high power, I'll get a little of that four-wheel kind of, like it sounds like a got your counter-infected, uh, auto. I had a week to off after saying he's giving me and it was roughly by 3D plus length around. I started with the end point because I got that off and running. Then I had problems with it. So I tried everything. He checked over for it and then all the Google searches did not get the thing to register on a site there. So I ended up with ASL3. Yeah, you know, I used to do a lot with DMR and I did some fusion. I have fusion here in the truck right now. Actually, I haven't turned it on yet, but it's here. And I've just come to really like all-star better than anything these days. I think that's a little more. I mean, you know, it'll work. You don't have to have a specialized radio with it.

15:40You still have to have a node, which you have to have a node for fusion and D-star and everything else. Unless you have a repeater near you, and that's fine. But, you know, you can use any analog radio or any digital radio on analog and talking to all-star. So it makes it a little bit more universal. I really like the audio quality of it. So I've been having fun with it the last few months. Yeah, I mean, I started on DMR. I've been licensed in 2008, but I never did much of the digital internet stuff. And, you know, I wanted to find out what DMR was. So, it was last year, the beginning of last year. I bought my first DMR radio with about 1701. So my first hotspot was a high zero. So, if you do, I have, you know, about the MMDVM board for it. Yeah, so it was real hot, heavy on DMR, and now I have like, I don't know, I got like five hotspots, just five DMR radios. I got a bunch of TYT-380s and TYT-390s. But, the all-star, now without it, don't even talk on DMR anymore after I get this all-star node on.

16:41It's kind of like, feels like you're talking on a computer because you can hear the chunk when you are on K and all that stuff. So, and the audio seems pretty cool. I don't like it, you know, I'm back to you. Yeah, I do agree. I think it sounds great, and I've been really enjoying it myself. You two go ahead and take it for a minute. Right now, Tim, N9WF, great name, Pota, he's activating a park on 14.3-20, and I cannot hear him. I hear other stations calling back to him, and I can hear them work him. Different stations work Tim, but I can't hear Tim calling. I think I kind of heard him once, he's way down in the noise, though. So, and as of yet, I've yet to hear anyone on 6.52. I've called out a couple times when I hit Shreeport. I called out when I was around Longview, Texas. I

On Interstate 20 Eastbound, and I heard these guys talking, just thought I'd get some repeater activity on the video. Starting to lose them now. Definitely fogged this morning in the review and in the front camera. Not fogged out. A bunch of mist on the windshield this morning. But it'll probably all burn off once the sun comes up later. 24:58yesterday. Not surprisingly, but disappointingly. Never heard anyone on Simplex. Lots of really good activity on all-star. So I was happy with that. Probably do some more all-star today. Do some more photo hunting as well. And I'm back. Sorry. I had to adjust a couple of radios, KC5 HWB. I was actually listening to some 20 meters this morning. There was a guy calling check-ins for the wild system and I turned the camera on and tried to get him on recording, but he wasn't having much luck, so we passed it off to another net control. I couldn't hear that guy, so I didn't get that. But ran across a couple of nets. There was a couple of guys ragged you and on 14.238 and they were all

26:01really loud. So I listened to them for about 15-20 minutes. They were just talking about whatever. Yeah, it definitely helps to pass the time on longer road trips, especially when there's a lot of people out there activating parts and you just scan up and down the band and hunt a bunch of photo. That's nice. But having this all-star is a really good alternative in my opinion. All-star was really active yesterday and I assume it probably will be again today, so I like to have both of them. I really like DMR. I think it's been incredibly poorly implemented by several systems, but the mode

27:18itself I really like is with the TDMA, you can have two conversations on the same frequency at the same time, so it really expands your capabilities for communication. But the good thing about all-star is that even though it's technically digital, it's analog voice, so you can use any analog radio with it to talk into a note or a repeater or what not. You don't have to have a specialized radio like a DMR or a D-star radio, so a little bit more universal that way. It sounds like you're talking on a local repeater, so it sounds really good. I've always been happy with the audio quality on it. I really like the way it works, and I think it's a little bit more forgiving with a mobile internet connection than DMR was as well. I love to get out there in Q&A. I like it a lot. The more that I learn about it, the better it is. Obviously there's accessibility, you know, it could be better to connect with it. We can have some kind of clear notes kind of out of the access. It will run around some of the digital network connection, but more of all

28:21that's good stuff to monitor the data and change where it's going to keep. It would be cool, because I mean I really love my clear notes, the ease of use with it. 31:28Right now, I've got the map is sent to Ocala. I may not go that far. According to Google Maps, I'm about six and a half hours from Ocala right now. Originally, I planned on going to Tallahassee, but I think I'm going to go farther than that. So I'm probably going to make it all the way at 75, Interstate 75 and kind of head south and see what to do from there. There's a couple of harvest toast campsites. Well, there's, there's actually quite a few of them up and down 75 in Florida. So I might stop at one of those for the night or I might try to make it all the way to Ocala, meet up with Tim and Dave and everybody else down there. So we'll see. I haven't decided yet, really. I'm going to see how the drive goes today.

I've been having trouble finding a mount for the top of the truck that will fit in a T-channel roof rack. But I think I found one. I may have to modify it slightly, but I think I found one. I was going to order it before this trip, but it's on Amazon. It's going to be like two weeks before it was here. It was not on the Amazon Prime shipping, so obviously I didn't get that, because I wouldn't have got it before this trip anyway, so try to pick that up when I get back and get the Starlink running. I really want to do some couple of short road trips with the Starlink to see just to kind of compare it to what I have now to see how well it works. Then a long road trip to kind of compare it over a long haul too, but I don't have any other long road trips planned. Let's see. Well, more expo in April.

But if you're just talking about like watching YouTube TV or streaming YouTube or something, it works perfectly fine. There's no problems at all. I had that yellow line and it wasn't that attention to it. So I was getting 20, 30 down and like 10, 15 up. So it's amazing what a cable will do. The marketing is I'm going to longer cable now. I have a 75 foot cable so I can put the dish back up on the roof. Yeah, I think that's the one I've got on my house too. I was just talking to the camera saying that I want to put Starlink on the truck so that I hopefully will be a little bit more stable in the internet on these road trips. Yeah, and if that was all there is to it, I would have done that by now. My challenge is that I have an aluminum roof rack on my truck, on my cab, on the top of my cab. So I can't really put anything up there this magnetic because the roof rack covers most of the cab. So I've been looking for a tea channel mount for the mini dish and I think I found one. I think I finally found, I'm going to have to modify it slightly, but I think I found one and I couldn't get it here in time before this trip. 39:51back roads just to get back to the interstate. Not a problem. I don't mind back roads, but this fog just makes it challenging. You can't even see stop signs until you're right on top of them. I wanted to start the camera because I think this would be a cool conversation. See, I think meshastic is what Arden should have been. The problem with Arden, I think, is that it is a great system. Don't get me wrong. I love Arden. I wish more people would use it. But the problem with it is that it requires some really specific sometimes high dollar hardware to get to deploy correctly. But if they were to do like the small, like, Lily Go Boards and Seed Studio Boards and whatnot and somehow implement those into Arden, I think Arden could have taken off a lot easier because it wouldn't have been a high dollar solution to get hardware routers in the air. And also, they focused on 2.4 gigahertz a little

40:51bit too much, which is a very saturated band. So that might be another issue as well. Definitely something to look into. So I was looking at it, the water filter thing. Yeah. And, you know, their preference for spotting and stuff like that was it needed a week the matching water from down to the front for your patient. Your site is a medium or a amateur or that was the way to take to get expensive access points. Yeah. So all the art from whereupend and then you use the amateur or a piece of circle and stuff like that. Right. Yeah. They used to call it channel negative two. It was two frequencies below the standard Wi-Fi 2.4 gigahertz frequency. And it was inside of the amateur radio band. It was not in the public Wi-Fi band. So the noise floor was much, much lower and that really opened up Arden a lot because it got out of the public Wi-Fi band. So that a lot more useful. But, you know, 2.4 gigahertz, very narrow banded, very line of sight. And they do have 900 megahertz Arden nodes.

41:53TP-Link and ubiquity and a couple others make some. And there is a 900 megahertz possibility to do with Arden. I always thought that that should have been focused on a little bit more rather than because you just got to have more nodes to create a closer mesh network when your 2.4 gigahertz frequencies are so narrow banded, so line of sight. They don't reach out as far as 900 megahertz does. So, and of course, you know, since they're more expensive, you got to buy more nodes and put more nodes in the air and build them out like that. And there's some people who've done that. And we've used it for field day before as far as to connect computers together for logging purposes. But yeah, I would like to kind of revisit that and see what they're doing. I think those guys are usually at Amvention also. I agree. The down the notes that I picked up in the newer firmware are possible to take advantage of the extra channels, the 5-figures bands. And then I was looking at some access points at TP-Link bags that support this or others. You bet what another one. They were only like $70. And you can throw a signal 20 kilometers or something like that.

42:54Now, whether that's practical or not, I don't know if that's an all-in-one argument. But you could get to test it with it. Yeah, a couple of the groups around my area. That's what they were doing. They were using the 5-gig band to build like backhaul links, like longer hop links. And then they were interfacing the 5-gig radios. If you it might have changed right now. It's been a long time since I looked at this. But used to be you could set up two radios, a 5-gig and a 2.4-gig. And you can interface them together via ethernet cable. That way they could see each other. And then you would build your your longer hops with the 5-gig and your closer shorter hops with the 2.4-gig. And they would all mesh together since the two bands are connected via ethernet at that point. So yeah, I've seen that done and it does work well. But again, you're still talking about buying numerous nodes at 70 bucks a pop. Also, I should say that Arden does not use Laura. And that's one thing that meshtastic has. That's a huge advantage over anything else. Did I double with you? What I would say was that maybe a use case where if you're built out of start your network for

43:54amateur radio that you go and apply for a grant with that one group, a AP, whatever the group is doing today. Yeah, ARDC. Yeah, that's not a bad idea. I think some people have done that. But no, what I said was Arden does not use Laura. I think Laura is a very big advantage that meshtastic has over anything else. But so they Arden was just using, you know, just straight up 2.4-gig or it's data signals. So her 5-gig or it's I guess. But if they were to implement Laura, which again, maybe they've done that by now. I don't know because I haven't done anything with Arden in a while, but that would be an advantage as well. Yeah, you know, I think probably Arden was around before the Laura thing kicked off. Yes. What you're going to want to go down a pathway is kind of hard to change. Right. But yeah, I definitely think that if there's the ability to do it, should be at least put into these better solutions for a lower cost. But fortunately, I think it's not going to get to bandwidth with Laura. Right. But yeah, because the low power is everything. But hopefully, one day we finally figured out a way to start to pricey more data

44:59and going forward instead of hanging off of the stuff from the 60s and 70s. Yeah, true. Yeah, but they've got Laura for 2.4-gig now that's supposed to increase the bandwidth quite a bit.
