About this episode
As meteorological Fall and the “ber” months arrive, the boys play some bike polo and continue talking about El Niño, with the hopes of a wild and wet winter. Meanwhile, in the absence of any rain, the Hawk Fire in Reno scorches 15,000 acres on Peavine Mountain, burning trails and 40+ homes. A woman swimming in Lake Tahoe is attacked by a river otter, a group of hikers become Dumb Ass Rescued Persons after asking AI to plan their ill-fated ascent of Mount Shasta and Vail Resorts faces a third anti-trust lawsuit alleging ski pass price fixing. Big Sally calls in with an Edward Abbey quote, Trail Whisperer rants about being a part-time crusader and the boys chew on a few DOPE or DERPs including taking home restaurant leftovers, fasting, paying to park and ride mountain bikes and Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.

Seems like every local in the valley here has a mountain bike. This one is really exploded. I break the law. I ride an illegal trip. And it's getting away from the cops the cars that come and creep. I put some vodka, he's a Chinese, a Downian. He isn't so bored just together on a run, you look for trouble. Y'all, they get on skis and they just think they can overcome the world. The more you burn around, the more you're gonna find out. I like to think that dad is out of the question. Their life starts at 40 miles an hour. Yeah Polo bot.
Polo bot. Yeah we got wrangled into playing some bike polo. We did that was so fun. It was super fun. Yeah I had a blast I was there till 9th almost 10 o'clock I didn't I didn't realize that I'm actually kind of good at bike polo even though I've never done yeah you scored a couple goals I think it's because I just have written a bike a lot that's I mean that's more than half the game all you got to do is know how to ride a bike and balance and then be able to you know hit a ball with a stick and I am competitive too are you competitive super yeah when it comes to games like that I get I definitely get competitive yeah I'm super competitive yeah being the youngest of three brothers I always had to prove myself yeah prove my worth so that I wouldn't get the tables scraps at the dinner dinner table yeah man it was awesome up there the backcountry and trucky it was a beautiful sunset they set up like the Polo field in the parking lot so we were playing on the parking lot there right out on on Donner
Bridge Road yeah I was not expecting that I thought that it was like meat at the backcountry yeah and then we were gonna ride bikes across the street and play like right around on the grass on my on a bike yeah polo yeah what I was envisioning yeah but instead it was on pay just in the little parking lot yeah it was a hoot it was pretty fun and at first I was a little concerned I was like who is this gonna be like you know beyond Thunderdome freaking roller derby full contact full contact smash into concrete and asphalt there's like obstacles everywhere you know and there's you know they put up like these wooden barriers on the outside so the ball like a wander enough but everybody was super cool and super chill and you know I felt that minor contact there was minor contact I mean I definitely there's some collisions to there it wasn't because I was trying to it was just because I was so focused on trying to get the ball and I had like tunnel vision and before I knew it I was plowing into somebody I think I think if the barrier had been like shoulder high yeah then that would
actually come into play a little bit because you could lean on it or push someone into it totally and then it would become a little more full contact yeah but with the barrier only being ankle high to keep the ball in this the area like it everyone played pretty nice well it was also I mean it was just high enough that it would stop your wheel but it would send you flying over the bars if you hit it at full speed I don't remember who it was but there was one player that his crank fell off oh yeah that was butter yeah butter butter lost the crank butters lost the crank it bolted right back on yet luckily we were at a bike shop so you just like wheeled bike on into the stand there and put the crank back on but yeah and then Jake Mons showed up with the freaking glizzy roller yes we had glizzies we had glizzies at the at the freaking bike polo park and and or like a 7-11 hot dog roller that was pretty awesome get a portable glizzy roller of course he did like pulled it right out of
the back of his new six hundred dollar car he has 600 dollars I wasn't pretty nice looking six hundred dollar car pretty nice six hundred dollar car especially when the glizzy came out the bag yeah exactly his I think his bike pole so Jake has like a polo specific polo bike yeah it was kind of blow away worth more than his six hundred dollar car probably that's a core Lord I mean that's that's core Lord right there oh yeah bike worth more than car automatic core Lord status yeah it's a you know and you can't doesn't really matter what the bikes for I mean it's just a favorite it's a quiver bike yeah so it's just for bike polo yeah what were they called again the executioner the and more the enforcer the enforcer yes it's really bitch and steel frame with nice welds and single speed it would look like a track bike it looked like a urban city fixie but I don't they wasn't fix here everybody had coaster or nutco's or freewheel but it looked like just a fixed gear kind of track road bike yeah but I yeah I've showed up with and I thought it actually worked really well I
have this like super old Marin Eldridge grade from 1990 and it's got this like super sick neon splatter Jackson Pollock style paint job and it you know it was single I set it up as a single speed it's just like a small frame 26 inch wheels so it's easy to ride you know it's like small compact it can spin around quick it's it looked just like one of those specific bike polo bikes it kind of did didn't it did yeah it looked it looks like they modeled it all those bikes off your bike I mean just buy an old all you gotta do is like go to Reno bike project pick up like a vintage mountain bike for 150 bucks and you've got yourself a bike bike yeah 26 inch vintage mountain bike boom that's what you were riding your riding old breezer mm-hmm that thing worked well yeah I showed up with my old my workhorse cruiser bike and yeah how come you traded at your beach cruiser because of the coaster break it wasn't yeah I was coaster at someone was like hey you can just use this one yeah that was I felt like I was fitting in more I was already standing out because I was
wearing a Jerry Jerry the day of aston and a hard hat so you look good dude I didn't I didn't need I didn't need to stand out anymore you would pretty get out there I was like that's a good outfit you know yeah safety first it's always safety first so yeah man that's it's funny that I was thinking about it when I was there but that's the only bike riding I've done in a couple weeks is it yeah I haven't I haven't been on my mountain bikes since my brothers were here the wind's been up yeah he's been aqua bot I've been aqua bot yeah the wind's been up so the foiling has been on it's been a like a good two-week stretch of really good foiling here in the basin whether it's Donor Lake or Tall yeah I've had some good days what does memo have to say dude silent billies he's got an eye out out the side door we've got our we've got our our sidekick our podcast sidekick back with us today on my lap again here goes here chilling he's just but he's looking out the window and I think he sees this approaching storm yeah it's
looking pretty gray out there he's he's feeling the the fall in the air and fall is in the air growling at the arrival of weather while we are at the beginning of meteorological fall start September 1st hence the cute up of all the the autumn the autumn movement of all these for the honest dude it fall it was like a it was one of the quickest switches up here at least I don't know if you felt it down in in in verti but Monday more it was at Monday with days today what Thursday Thursday two days ago Tuesday morning hmm was downright cold up here and it just felt like fall like that yeah like summer ended in a 24 hour window yeah and then I'll say this morning on my drive to work this morning the quality of the morning light yeah coming
around the lake it's it looked like December the way that the clouds were kind of gray then there was this beautiful sunrise and the way the light was and just I guess it's also the angle of the light has changed a little bit yeah the sun angles change so it's just I came around the corner and my drive to work this morning was like oh my god that looks like a January morning just minus hopefully three feet of snow on it yeah yeah well we're into the burr months mmm burr burr so that starts with September yeah and ends with February burr bra September September December December okay and reset into January February there's the airy March you're airy so I was just thinking the hour February the hour worry ours in it to me to me the winter ends in May well because there's no longer an hour in the work it may snow it may not snow yeah so we've got I don't think it's really fall I mean they're already
talking about a return I was I was watching watching Michael Schneider Michael Schneider this morning and he said that after next week it's gonna get hot again okay so I don't think it's over yet we got dry warm weather there's still around still coming and then hopefully with some moisture moisture moisture there's three hurricanes in the Pacific right now it's wild it looks like it looks like the Gulf of Mexico or something just like one hurricane stacked up after another coming in for a landing big ones too big big ones like four category four hurricanes Hawaii super lucky super El Niño super El Niño there is this guy I don't care members name on Instagram he's got a giant beer I am Luke snow yeah yeah Luke snow he's an anti anti-hyper and he's just like I have studied El Niño since I was a child and I know everything about El Niño's and let me tell you that the this El Niño doesn't mean anything
there's no guarantee that there will be a big winter you know there's no correlation between this El Niño and any other El Niño and he's just being like a Debbie Downer I'm like dude your beard is an El Niño look at that thing it's massive it goes down to his belly button someone needs to comment on that post and be like dude if it snows like 50 feet into how you need to shave your beard yeah yeah yeah put your money where you beat it I saw that post I saw that post too Kurt and he's kind of right he's right there's no guarantees but anything it's again though another another post on El Niño I was like do you're it's like you're just playing into the whole it's a sorry but you're like you now you have the aunt it's like the El Niño's been hyped so much that now there's like the anti El Niño hype yeah which is still just yeah El Niño it's still high it's still high it's still high it's still high I'm just trying to get clicks and likes and eyes you know so it's like well this should make a post that says don't trust the El Niño hype it's still high it doesn't matter I
think I do you know we're due for another good winter it's been since 23 since we've had a good winter so it's the three yeah one of our guests who is gonna come on soon is a firm believer in the three to five year cycle and we're gonna talk about it with him because he's been studying Lake Tau for a long time so the three to five year cycles a real thing and we're there so yeah we're right in the middle of the three to five year cycle yeah a memo what do you think about all that buddy I think he's thinking that he's gonna need a warm jacket this way well I'll tell you the El Niño thing lately you see all those floods that were happening in Colorado and Colorado River and Grand Canyon hard to miss the flash flood she's due Zion there was a Zion fly-out footage from Springdale and Zion yeah and then I didn't see much of the footage from the Grand Canyon but I definitely read read about the accident yeah Phantom
Ranch is basically inaccessible the bridges are out like infrastructure has been impacted water systems water lines are gone like it's pretty extreme and then I dude I don't doom scroll very often but the the flooding in Nepal and even watching any of that it's kind of hard to take your eyes off my god I've never seen anything like that in my life that I didn't even look real look like AI it all looks like AI it was freaking crazy entire town's just like wiped off the map in a matter of seconds no warning and just it was like running through the streets and all of a sudden it was like an avalanche that's how fast nuclear bomb that's how fast it was moving yeah like there really wasn't even a word for what that event was like it was a debris flow but it was a debris flow that was caused by a glacial collapse which then damned a look I don't even think they truly know what happened at the beginning of that event yet yeah it's all been a bunch of speculation they think it was a
glacial collapse that then damned some water and then the water broke and then it was water with ice and then all of the debris yeah massive glacial boulders but you I mean yeah wild event that was a wild event ever I mean that that hasn't happened I don't think in at least hundreds maybe thousands of years because some of those I feel like some of those settlements in Nepal are pretty freaking old thousands of years old right I mean in the Himalaya yeah especially there on the that because it happened on the border of China yeah and that was a big trading route there where people you know I've been going trading goods for centuries right eons eons so I don't you know this isn't this isn't like you know the feather river canyon which has only been you know inhabited for the last couple hundred years this is thousands of years of of human existence in these places and I don't think anything like this has
ever happened in recorded history and if this I mean I don't I don't typically like get on the hype train with climate change but like if there's isn't an indicator of climate change I don't know what is man like a glacial collapse in the Himalaya red flag big pretty big red flag I would say yeah yeah I feel just long Tonga it's beyond long Tonga yeah that's you can't joke about that one like that was it absolutely catastrophic yeah it was insane so we're seeing we're already seeing I don't know if that's has anything to do with El Nino but there's a lot of moisture in the atmosphere there's a lot of wild weather and hopefully that translates to a whole bunch of wild wicked goods know this way it's hope so and I am in a turtle optimist I I think every year is going to be a big year but this I think the odds are stacked at our side yeah well I haven't going back to what you're saying earlier I have I haven't been riding my bike
much I haven't had much motivation around my bike much but I kind of have to because I got a three day bike pack adventure coming up next week so I have to like I've been doing some we cram training you know last minute cram training cram training yeah cram training just cram training work as long as you do it yeah as long as you do it long enough in advance before you're anything inside at two weeks you're not really getting any benefit you have to do all your cram training beyond two weeks from whenever you're doing your big ride so it's a two week it's a two week buffer to cram it's a two week taper basically like from yeah you need two weeks for your body to kind of come back if you're gonna do big miles or big training you need two weeks of recovery before you do your event or whatever you're gonna do so last week I did two back-to-back megas on the Amish bike like 8,000 feet of climbing like 40 big days 45 to 50 miles yeah one of the days I rode from Verdai out to Badenau Canyon out to
top of Babid Peak down Badenau Canyon Trail and then rode over the shoulder of Sardine Peak out towards like Highway 89 and then back Hennis Pass all the way to Verdai and then the next day I rode up Garcin Road up to Hunter Lake Trail the 4x4 Trail that goes up over Big Meadow and then down into Colin Ranch and then hit some some secret stash in Colin Ranch and then down and then back the Bell Eye Front single track back in Verdai so that's big loops yeah how's rad or all right need some love it needs there's a bunch of trees down up high and there's a lot of brushing that needs to happen mid-mid mountain nothing that we couldn't bang out in an afternoon with a handful of people it's not that far out but like we just we haven't had any funding to maintain that trail so like we just haven't been able to get crews out there and doesn't seem like anybody locally out there has been you know going out and cleaning it up so yeah we need
to rally a crew I was talking to Josh who was the guy that invited us to the bike polo who lives in Loyalton yeah and he really wants to get out there and and you know get that trail cleaned up so I think we're gonna try and assemble a little strike mission this fall cool so that way when the rains do come and the trails are all dialed you know we can point that it's raining right now oh it's raining oh yeah good perfect it just as you said that I notice some some splashes on the outside I better get to I better get to work then I got to start working on bad and awe but anyway yeah so next week doing a three day bike pack adventure cool starting and finishing Quincy how big a days will those be between 60 and 80 miles each day oh that's big but they're it's it's all it's all two track you know and kind of bike or will you be on I'll be on that track that I rode the Toyobe Crest Trail track stash on like a that's a mountain bike yeah I thought about riding the gravel bike but honestly man a mountain bike is just so
much more comfortable for big miles like that when you're especially when you have bags on your bike and shit like I don't know riser bars are real nice and then you can go down hill as fast as you want you don't even think about it you can just rally cool because we're gonna be the mission is to hit six different fire lookouts on this loop so obviously there's gonna be a bit of climbing but yeah it should be hopefully cool and hopefully there's some moisture in the dirt because it's been so dry out there I think you're gonna have some moisture yeah hopefully and then the other the other big thing that happens since the last time we recorded was the hawk fire which happened in Reno we can a half ago has that already that happened after we we recorded oh yeah oh because we talked about the other fires yep the bug fire yeah okay so the hawk fire the hawk fire so like three days after we recorded the hawk fire happened in Reno on pvine literally right in your backyard it started less than a
mile from our house well and I wasn't there this is the second time in a row there's been a fire in Verdye and I've been out of town and so swanjon was you know rightfully very nervous and didn't really know what to do I mean she was following the you know the watch duty app and everything and we weren't being evacuated mandatory because thankfully the winds were in our favor they were blown the fire directly the opposite direction up over the top of pvine so away from Verdye but I'm out in the Toy Abbey and working on the Mohawk Canyon Trail with a few friends including Chris McNamara and we did a first descent on Mohawk Canyon which was sick we haven't finished it yet but we had the corridor cleared enough that you could ride it but I got like a spot of service while I was up on the mountain and I get like my phone just blows blows up with a bunch of messages and I'm like oh shit and so I'm trying to you
know message with swanjon like you know what should we do she's asking me like what do you want me to grab I might have to leave and I'm just like well you know I got a folder of important documents and photographs otherwise it can all burn I mean whatever man you know I've come to grips with just you know losing everything it's okay it would suck but it's just shit's replaceable you just you can replace stuff you know but thankfully didn't come to that she never had to evacuate even though she was literally standing out in her front yard and looking at the mountain and so you know I and I thought about coming home right away and it was like five o'clock in the evening on Saturday when I got the message and you know I had been out on the trail all day was kind of tired it would have been four to five hour drive back would have gotten home at 10 o'clock at night and it's like well then what you know and I we had a friend with us there from trucky fire who had starlink and he was looking at the weather
forecasting it's like it next four days the wind's gonna be out of the southwest so everything's good like there's no risk to vert out all everything's totally good and so I felt better about that so I was like I will go home tomorrow and so I want home tomorrow and then I on Sunday and but within 24 hours due to fire had pretty much like done its damage it just burned itself it just torched 15,000 acres and 24 hours and then it was pretty much done and you get home and you know she's obviously upset and I think she what I mean I know she wanted me to come home and I didn't and so we talked about it and she said okay well new rule if you can see fire from the house come home yeah and I go oh that's fair that's fair that's a fair that's fair that's a fair expectation you know and so I was talking to Chris Mac and Mara about it because you know he had been out there with me and and he said and I told him that you know swan john was a little upset that I had come home he
as well it's good to hear that you're safe from the fire and he said if it makes you feel any better my buddy Todd and I don't know if it was Todd like Todd who Todd which Todd but anyway he was climbing with Chris down in Yosemite during the Angora fire in 2008 and Todd's house was it didn't the direct path of the fire and his wife was pregnant and he didn't come home he said I'm stuck on a big wall with seam at and my response to Chris was well you know core Lord's gonna core Lord so anyway thankfully nothing happened everything was good I talked to one of my firefighter friends James who lives in the neighborhood and saw him the next day and he was driving down the street in his fire truck and any of that like a big smile on his face calm as cool as a cucumber calm as could be you know and I said how was your
weekend he was oh it's great I had the weekend off hanging out with the family I'm down to the river had a few beers barbecued watch the fire so you weren't worried at all oh no not at all man it was going the other way we're fine yeah that was good people in Somerset were oh god I would have been they were sweating bullets oh dude checking my drawers they was bad it was real bad I mean it was so close to some of those neighborhoods in Somerset but yeah and then luckily you know the trails the maze the pvine maze where the mototrails are got little impacted some of the trails I think the mountain bike trails on pvine got impacted like I think Mahogany Forest burned a little and I think golden fleece got pretty torched but you know a lot of it is brush a lot of this age brush that'll come back really it's gonna come back they'll be like crazy wildflowers next year I bet and grasses and so yeah it looks like a big giant black scar right now but it'll come back I think the bigger thing is it just you know they're 40 fat 40 plus families lost their homes in North
Valley which was a huge bonfire you know like it would it came in hot heavy and fast on the North Valley side and I talked to another friend who's in in fire for a long time and and he was very disappointed in how all the Evac stuff went down he said it was very poorly planned very poorly laid out there was all kinds of chaos there was all kinds of unnecessary evac zones like he said he was being evac and he's like our neighborhood was completely safe we did not need to be evac at all so there was like 50,000 people who were being evac that didn't need to be I mean they need to be I think they evac close to 100,000 people yeah there was it was in a cost chaos and it caused like gridlock people couldn't get out people were stuck so it sounds like it wasn't executed very well I you know for me I don't even know I wasn't there and be I don't know better but he's done a lot of these over the years and he said it was he was disappointed just go to show you how ill prepared we are here in the basin yeah
yeah that is a big a lot of the arguments that people have about slowing growth down the basin is based around that scenario and people just don't think they're like oh it's not a really it's never gonna happen it's never gonna happen until it happens yeah and then there's four you know in some places there's one or two ways look at where we're at right now and and tall down or there's out there's two ways out of here and there's five thousand ohms yeah yeah so yeah that's but to tie a donner's credit their fuels management here is next level it's well done next level like incredibly well done up here yeah they're they're ready for they're ready for sure yeah it's still it even still the evacuation thing is is always scary I actually had the conversation with the wife the other day I think when the hawk fire was going on about well now that she has her new e-bike I was like well if you know it ever we ever got stuck here we could
e-bike out of incline yep pretty easily yeah yep you know because we don't have dirt bikes but if we could get out on an e-bike especially hers it's got class three yeah if you go I mean it's it's a valid extra it would get you up and out of the basin yeah yeah and you know on that hawk fire man they still they haven't said anything about how it started all you know is that it did start in cow canyon which is a mototrail that's right behind the house so it could have been a motorcycle it could have maybe been a side-by-side it could have been someone target shooting could have been kids could have been kid who the who knows but whatever it was whoever was out there was being a real dumbass and I hope they catch him and I hope they make an example of that person because it's just this stuff needs to stop man it's getting out of hand this year's been a pretty bad year in Reno yeah with ours and it's been burning yeah it's been burning at the hands of humans it's not like she's a lightning strike it's because people are doing dumb shit in the woods you want to do some news sure some
news that actually matters news that actually matters in a world where there's a lot of news that doesn't actually matter recovered if you know we did cover a few you hear about the woman that was attacked by a river otter and the yes she seems pretty like cool about it yeah well I think part of it is because she's like a super experienced swimmer she's like I don't know what people like swims every day well yeah and she's the swimming instructor and so she's like an open water swim instructor so if there's anybody who could have handled that kind of an attack physically she would be probably among the most you know able to survive it because she can actually swim in open water but this river otter came at her and was just on her some damage she was bleeding did you see pictures over she was bleeding she was like her legs got attacked she has to get like 20 some stitches and had to get like multiple rabies treatments I think that river otter was pissed about the tree poisoning at incline beach he's maybe it made him crazy maybe the tree poison got into the
water and didn't it didn't happen at at Santa Arbor it happened there said between hidden beach and incline incline okay so that's on the still on the incline side of Santa Arbor yeah yeah yeah yeah and she said she got up on the rocks she'd like swam to shore and got up on the rocks like right near the you shore trail you know the bike path yeah and the the otter was coming up on the rocks and chase center and so people are up on the bike path look at down like oh there's a woman bleeding down there and there's some animal like attacking her attack here you remind me there was a what was it was in Santa Cruz that would have kept attacking the surfers at steamer lane yes a sealine was a sealine or a seal it was it was what's the small little furry guys that are down there that roll in their back that eat that eat clams I could same thing as a river otter I guess it's like the
ocean version of an otter but yeah to remind me of that because there was there was an animal down there at the lane that kept attacking surfers well sea otters are gnarly I mean not sea otters sea sea sea lions no it was a sea otter it was a sea otter yeah okay yeah it was a sea otter that's it was in Santa Cruz maybe he's just still there but that's what it reminded me of yeah I mean I just didn't think that there were river otters in Lake Tahoe I didn't I mean I never knew that I knew there were otters and rivers I didn't know they were in friggin Lake Tahoe so that's good to know it's River Fed I mean it is River Fed yes but it's a giant friggin lake so is that gonna what are you gonna you're in not lake a lot with your foil dude yeah yeah I wear I wear it on foil I go get on foil and go I wear booties and now a wet suit I wasn't she wearing a wet suit though I don't know yeah I don't think a matters teeth can go
through go through that shit pretty easy this is a dark story a dark dumbass rescued person yeah okay you're about this one yeah go ahead the dark the darks on Shasta there was three darts that used AI to plan their hike of Shasta are you kidding me they used AI they used AI to ask like well how long is it gonna take what should I bring oh my god I wear how much food do I need how much water should I bring and they listen to chat GPT and it was like they were going split boarding on a big day with palbot and I just sandbag it'll be fine you'll be fine you're fine you got this it's not that far it's not that far come on it's only a 14,000 foot mountain dude it's gonna be really good trust me yeah so here yeah I got a little press release from US Forest Service news release from them
August 31st rescue on Mount Shasta on August 29th a party of three young novice they used to wear novice climbers set off from the clear creek trail I had to climb Mount Shasta they arrived at that headsprings of clear creek late in the day around 8 p.m. where they established a base camp which they note that was on prehibited site with the water spring zone so they already they already got bad karma for camping in the wrong spot at 3 a.m. I'm not telling a pick camp there they probably asked if it was okay at 3 a.m. August 30th the party began their climb from base camp so that mean kudos to them for three a.m. I started at the right time yeah carrying enough food and water for an eight hour climb group made slow progress of the mountain around 1 p.m. they reached 11,000 feet so hold on a minute so that it from three to one they didn't even yeah they weren't even close to the top they were at 11,000 feet and so like in the summertime I don't know I'm not super familiar with clear creek but I'm assuming it's probably at 7,000 feet so that's yeah most trail heads there on their ass so they'd say they've
gained 4,000 feet in from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. geez that's not very much yeah that's like 400 feet and okay they reached 11,000 feet in the head of conversation about whether they should turn around well done they decided to proceed around 3 p.m. the party rested at mushroom rock at 12 a.m. while resting they spoke with two other climbing groups one of which advised that they should turn around and another that encourages them continue continue the summit that person's daymost pow-bott the party reported not feeling great but decided to proceed at 7 p.m. that the group of three reached the summit in Manchester so they were on the summit at 7. God so they started 3 a.m. they didn't make it to the top till 7 p.m. that's insane like 3 to 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. is already a 12 hour day and they said that they brought enough food and water for an eight hours the first right flag is they brought
enough food and water for an eight hour climb yeah but you got to get back down yeah you eat and drink on the way down to that means that's four hours up and four hours down oh they were planning to do a four hours up and four hours if I was going to plan for an eight hour climb it before yeah because you're not unfortunately they're not skinned out well I thought I thought they meant like eight hours like to the top and then another four hours or whatever back down how do you you'd have to ask Chatchee PT what yeah I'm gonna ask them hey I want to go hike Mount Shasta how do I do it? Aft around 8 p.m. on their descent near 12 a.m. the party called 911 for directions uh these I've read in the report that's directions yeah they they were using I'm at mushroom rock do I go left or right they were using trail forks on their phone but then the phone died oh my god dude and then the phone died and then and then they had a battery charger thing and then they were charging the phone but then died too but
for it wouldn't trail forks wouldn't work because I don't know it wouldn't work with the battery charging or something anyway they called for the called 911 for directions and eventually they got rescued yeah so I just saw that they got back to what I saw was they got back to their campsite finally at the end of this and uh ordeal uh at like 9 30 the next morning the whole line at 9 30 the nice morning for Forest Service climbers reached the party the group was exhausted hungry and thirsty yes climate rangers found the patients need to be stable and provided minor first aid as well as food and and water for the group uh this despite the efforts of a California highway petroleum helicopter hoist was not possible from this location climbing rangers assisted the party out of mud creek canyon they they they had to send it down the wrong canyon too when they took them 36 hours to do this from car to car from when they went they started to when
they returned to their camp 36 flipping hours dude that's how long this adventure took them and one of the I read that uh they asked this google Gemini AI uh what kind of food they should bring and AI told them pack all carbohydrates and no fat because fat takes too long to digest like what kind of advice is that oh that's it's just absurd it doesn't you want fat that's that's all you're doing on a hike is burning fat you're not really burning carbs as much as you're burning fat yeah your low heart rate long burn is fat burning high heart rate like if you're freaking pegging yourself or you're sprinting or you're like you know it close to your max that burn that's more carb burning like low heart rate like hiking is burning fat so it's just so flawed man I can't believe I mean I can't believe so I fully believe this is how
dumb people are it we've descended into in your accuracy but I'd like to turn the conversation though yeah we can make fun of darts all we want but like this situation was completely avoidable if if instead of asking AI about what they should do if they had just called a guide and hired a guide for the day yeah they actually would have been up and down that mountain in eight hours or they could have called a 888 cor hello rd and left a voicemail yeah and told us how we're out there day was but yeah I mean it's just again it's leaning on or find a friend that has done it before and lean on their experience yeah like gather the right intelligence for your adventure yeah and and use resource people are way better resource than AI when it comes to outdoor adventures yes like just put full stop full stop just putting that one just putting that one out
there like reach out to a real person for real beta yeah on what you want to do yeah like when I travel that's that's all I want to do when I go somewhere is meet the local that can show me around like show me the local trails okay sweet I'll follow his wheel instead of like doing a bunch of research on the air staring at your phone and staring at your phone that you shouldn't have mounted to your handlebar like just like just meet a local and follow their wheel yeah like that's the that's the lesson that's underlying in the story to me yep communicate with other humans don't communicate with your phone yes yes agreed oh man you got some other news that matters I got I got one more but you got one more go ahead uh yes this was I mean this is this was been making the rounds on the on the the ski uh ski world news but this I've got a little article article here from the summit daily which was the local newspaper from Summon County where it lived in Breckenridge and uh it is
talking about that valedicts is now involved in a third lawsuit and this is an interesting one it's not uh customers that are suing because they feel like they've been wrong but it's actually a shareholder is suing veil for mismanagement and potentially like frotting frotting the shareholders of veil which is which is an interesting this one has some legs I thought there was one already like this I thought there was another shareholder that had sued veil in the past possibly but this one is you know suing on the grounds that those other two like he's referencing the other two lawsuits that are in already in effect with uh here I'll just read a little bit from from the summit daily but veil resorts is defending itself from a third lawsuit this year accusing the company of anti-competitive business practices and this time and investors the one suing uh Gary Peterson investor and
veil resorts filed a stockholder derivative complaint in US district responsibility to stockholders citing claims of anti-competitive practices raised and two other lawsuits filed in the same court earlier this year the company executives either knew that veil was violating the antitrust laws and its own code and failed to halt the conduct or can consciously disregard the red flags generated the 55 page complaint states the investor's lawsuit names veil resorts and the company board of directors blah blah and robcats cats couts whatever's name as as defendants uh it points to separate lawsuits accusing veil resorts of colluding with other destination ski resort companies to fix past prices and another lawsuit accusing the company of artificial inflation daily of daily to push customers to the multi-resort season pass so you've got a shareholder now filing a lawsuit on behalf of other shareholders for the same accusations that the public is trying to see yes but
this could get their passholders this veil could get in trouble not only for these lawsuits but I mean he's citing something that is against I think like you know anti-trade anti-trade anti-trust anti-real anti-trust issues yeah so yeah this will be another one to just quietly follow along and see where it goes see if it's the beginning of the breakup of the megapast but you know that it seems like both I think veil and alter are having lower pass sale numbers now starting into September 1st I think so yeah this might be the the the beginning of the end of the megapast have you bought a megapast this I have not bought a megapast this year you haven't bought one yet I probably will still buy one yeah uh but I've been not wanting to do it yeah you know I cut you kind of have to to ride certain resorts here that I could be really could be wearing a hat well I'm wearing a hat right now for one of them so could be really good amount this year yeah
yes that's neat and you know happens yes that's one of the reasons why I would probably buy that particular passes just like I said last year that's the only reason why I have one is mammoth but yeah I still I I'm absolutely fascinated by the the trajectory of all of everything that involves these megapast because I've been preaching it since day one I've watched it change skiing yeah watch to change communities watch to change tall yeah and I'll be I'm curious to see where this one goes yeah well uh we've got some blissioners that call then should we do those yeah I want to do some listener calls I think silent billy over here wants to hear the grower he wants to hear a call in eight bra okay here we go hey mine the trackers this is big Sally with all this sock of glorifying a good fucking off from work and focusing on what's more important in life I wanted to share my favorite quote from little dead red Abby and I quote do not burn
yourselves out be as I am a reluctant enthusiast part-time crusader half-hearted fanatic they've the other half of yourselves in your lives for pleasure and adventure is not enough to fight to the land it is even more important to enjoy it while you can while it's still there to go out there and hunt and fish you invite and mess around with your friends ramble out yonder explore the forests climb the mountains bag the peaks run the rivers breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air fit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness the lovely mysterious and awesome space enjoy yourselves keep your mind in your head and your head firmly attached to your body body active and alive now promise you this much promise you this one sweet victory over your enemies over those desk bound men and women with their hearts and a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators promise you this you will outlive the bastards unquote and
you'll have a hell of a lot more fun hey this one's for you good sir gordo thanks for the inspiration that's some good stuff that's awesome that's we we set a while back that we need like a a weekly check-in from big south I know and then there he was right on kea with a good one you know I've never I for whatever reason I never really got an Edward Abby but hearing that quote I mean that that definitely resonates as they like to say with me because that that half-hearted crusader you know it's kind of like I always say that's not my crusade that's not my crusade that's not my you know battle to fight you know I don't want to get into that it's too much politics like a lot of times man I'll be I'll be dead honest like well all this protect our winter stuff and all the ad quickest scene you got to go to DC and you got to go in front of the policy makers and like no I don't I don't want to do any of that I just want to go out in the woods with a simple life and and experience the woods and and like if if it and they're like yeah but if
you don't they're gonna come for you and then you're not gonna be able to go out in the woods anymore like I'll just find another place in the woods there's gonna be there's gonna be places in the woods I can still go but I just it's not my crusade to fight that's not what I'm built for I'm just not built to go to Washington DC and wear a suit and stand before policy makers and plead my case I'm not that person I'm glad Jeremy Jones is doing that I'm glad you know a lot of these people in Tahoe who are like you know like plus who the hell am I nobody knows who the hell I am like why would I why would it matter that I go to DC and wear a suit I'd just probably rant I would show up and be like the curmudgeon you know ban all ice cream trucks in the United States you know it'd be a lot better if I didn't have to hear the ice cream man every day and they'd be like who is who invited this guy so I'd like you to include in your in your legislation a policy on no ice cream trucks in my neighborhood can you do that but yeah like I just I want to be able to
just get away from people and it's not my crusade to fight in that regard there are some things that are important enough to me that I think are on a local enough level that I would be more involved in but like on a national policy level man a lot of that stuff it's just you know I I see some people get engaged in that and at the end of the day as much as they don't want to admit it I think they think to themselves why did I do that it just committed to a huge thing that's like so over my head and such a such a massive undertaking that I don't even know if I'm really gonna actually move the needle on this at all you know um and I'm not I'm not telling people I'm not trying to discourage people from doing those types of things it's just that there's some people who are cut out for it and there's some people who aren't and I'm definitely not and so I'm that I've always been that kind of half-hearted crusader where it's like you know I believe in the cause but I also just want to be out in the woods doing my thing you know um and because you
don't want to bring yourself out I think that's the other thing is people really you know they they over commit themselves kind of like like John mentioned when he called in you know last episode where he said everybody you know commits themselves to their work and to the car they're over committed they're over committed and they're burned out and they're and they're they're pulling out their hair and man life's too short life is super short and fleeting and it could even end tomorrow and you got to enjoy it man like if you don't enjoy the the fight and being in a suit and in DC talking to policymakers if you don't enjoy that if you see that as a chore or as just something that like it stresses you out then don't do it because there's other people who do enjoy that believe it or not like they actually enjoy that stuff so find another find another way to have an impact a positive impact on the world that doesn't stress you out that you're passionate about and that you love and that you would do it for free or you know if you can get paid for it all the better but like yeah I just think that there are a lot of people out there who sign up for
things that maybe they shouldn't because it's just going to cause a lot of undue stress and cause a lot of I don't know maybe like questions of futility like do I even matter does this even matter am I even making an impact so just get outside more play more you know keep it locals what I say keep it local keep it local and thanks big Sally for the call in yeah that's a good one I love Edward Edward Abby so yeah I need to read him more I really was like oh yeah that's a great quote perfect well put well put in relation to Gordo yeah super well put for sure all right I've got another one some Lee down in Marin okay yo fellas hopefully my call is getting through hey this is Lee down in Marin County called a few times calling again about the crooked stuff and yes they're dope there's this really fun neighborhood kind of like really routine music festival thing that
goes on in center fell in Gersel Park neighborhood and crooked stuff shows up and it is a fucking madhouse so you guys should come down for that or ask them about it on the spot yes yep love it so much thanks guys man all right there's a there's a fan of the crooked stuff yeah cool I would love to see those guys live again man especially in their home in their in their home in their hometown yeah yeah that'd be cool that'd be really cool we got to find out when that festival is yeah yeah well I'll look into that all I'm gonna be down there next in that neck of the woods next weekend okay when you're out sufferin on your 70 70 mile bikepacking right I'm gonna be cruising around the wet redwoods with the wife on a knee bike oh that sounds a lot more enjoyable yeah I'm trying to find the motivation to do that it's it's it's it's having to dig deep man good on you well thanks for the call in Lee that's right yeah and uh it's W actually from start house reached
out to me and thanked me for the he sent me a screenshot of of his phone and he was listening to organically good trio I was digging on that man it's like oh yeah this is good yeah it's that me a mess it's really good we got we got one listener that's in no I've been listening to organically good trio on on Spotify finally signed up for Spotify so I don't hear ads anymore oh and man it's a really nice way to find new music I'd never really I'm so old school I still listen to CDs I'll go to the damn CD store and buy CDs you know but like Spotify's pretty damn slick it's it's great it's funny oh what I'll do is I I haven't paid I don't pay for Spotify anymore I just listen to the ads but the the algorithm that once you like like a song and then it'll keep sending you other music I do pay for Apple music so I'll like then make a take a screenshot of the Spotify and then go find it and Apple music and download it so wait you you pay for Apple but you don't pay for Spotify I don't why because I'm just an Apple I believe in Apple hey I
I list I listen to all my music on Apple huh I just because I buy the sweet of Apple like it's all you know it's memory it's photos yeah it's my email yeah it's all that stuff so I pay for Apple but I don't pay I won't pay for Spotify huh interesting I used to when we had the restaurant we would play Spotify in the restaurant yeah but the restaurant was paid for it okay so that brings me up to a couple of doper derp's oh braham I'm excited yeah some doper derp's at all I think I sent you one the other day but I can't remember what it was why did you take me with what you got doper derp not eating all your dinner at the restaurant and taking home leftovers kind of depends like I guess if you're hungry you should just smash your dinner but taking leftovers some places just over serve you so then yes you should take some leftovers but not all go
all not all food is good to go and it should only be consumed at a restaurant like what what food would you you should do not take home with you for leftovers like a Caesar salad any salad any salad any salad sushi okay you don't like you should never bring home sushi that's a terrible idea that those are two right off the top of my head okay how about you I mean are you do you take food home so I am the type of person that wants to just finish what's in front of me and when we're out to dinner swanjon always will take home pretty much half of what she's eaten and she'll have leftovers and then I get leftover I get leftover envy the next day when I open the fridge and like she has leftovers damn and if I would have just not eaten that last slot that pork slider I could have had a pork slider for lunch today and I didn't really need to eat the third one you know I like
left there like more full I could have I could have not eaten that third one and taking it home and been totally fine totally satiated the night before and then woken up the next day and then looked in the fridge and gone oh I got leftovers it's an amazing thing it's like delayed gratification you know but it's hard to delay gratification when you're in the moment and you're looking at that food on your plate you're like I really want to eat that thing right now it's kind of like I think what a dog does you know a dog has no no filter in being able to you know manage and regulate food consumption it's just like if it's in front of me I'm going to eat it and so I've been trying really hard to not eat all the food that's in front of me if I don't absolutely feel like I need to like I'm if I'm from full of them like satisfied I'll I'll not eat the rest of it it takes a fair bit of self-control to to do that but man it really pays off the next day the the stoke you get when you open the refrigerator and realize that you have leftovers far exceeds the you know the like
oh man do I really have to stop eating right now the night before it's delayed gratification yeah but I I like to differentiate a little bit with the fact that like leftover summer restaurant in your fridge the next day yeah are not as good as a home-cooked food that is a leftover that's in your fridge the next day like we make certain foods at my house or my wife really does that you know it's like a lasagna or whatever it might be and it's and we make extra and then that's those there's leftovers and those leftovers can last us two or three days and on every time I'm like some of it gets better with age yeah but restaurant to go food like or restaurant food really should be consumed in a restaurant it's it's the it's the experience it's the ambiance it's like it's just better there and it's not as good there or it's not as good the next day out of your fridge it's better to eat it on site yeah I disagree with that yeah
we're gonna yeah that's where you and I did so are you a derp on taking leftovers home it's I'm not a just yeah I guess so you should eat it in the restaurant and then and then if you and then if you have too much food you've overordered like order less food when you go out and that's tough for some people because like I want my first car you need my own booze boosh and then I need my appetizer and then I need my main booze I need my main course and I need yeah but like so for for example like fine dining if you go to a Michelin star restaurant you're not walking out the door with a doggy bag no no no no no no no no no no I'm talking about like going to like chop 40 like the local water and hole you know you get a burger or something you don't want to eat though I'm not talking like I'm just referencing though like going to a good a good restaurant it's like it another example of this is like a good example of a of how good of a restaurant is is do
they sing you happy birthday like if you go into a restaurant and they're singing someone happy birthday it's not a good restaurant it's not it's not oh dude the sushi place we go to and Northwest Reno is the bomb and they sing an awesome karaoke happy birthday and it's the the best sushi place I've been to in Reno so yeah and you know what else things people happy birthday what like Chuckie cheese yeah Chuckie cheese too good it's Friday and yeah so to to to goes a tough yeah that's a tough one I'm kind of a dare bonnet yeah that's interesting yeah I guess simply because like to me it never tastes as good the next next day I see I feel like it it can for me it it definitely can and I think it's in a top in how if you stick it in the microwave no it's not but if you put it swanjon's really good at this she really knows how to
reheat leftovers the proper way so that when you when you when it's ready to eat you eat it you're like oh damn that's still pretty damn good like it's prepared properly you know there's an art to it I feel like so I've definitely gotten on the taking home food train unless we're at like a really nice restaurant I agree with you like I'm not gonna eat half of my flaminion or send the shit or like the rest of it yeah no I'll eat that whole thing but if if we're just at the local water and hole if we're like going out for a light meal or something or whatever and I over order I'm like I'll just take that home and have it for lunch tomorrow plus the other thing the other reason why I think it's good to take leftovers home is because the price of a meal has gotten so flip an expensive dude everything now for if you want a hamburger anywhere 20 bucks a minute 20 20 bucks 20 20 20 20 our hamburger we are in the we are in the era of the 20 dollar hamburger yeah minimum so it's like well it could be a ten dollar hamburger I could eat half of it tonight
and then half of it tomorrow and if half of it satiates me for the night then I'll you know two meals one two meals one or you could just eat the whole hamburger and then wait an extra week until you go out to dinner yeah I mean you could I guess I don't know I think if it's expensive the other thing too is in so you in the last six months have dropped what 30 pounds I think it was I got up to 30 pounds and I think I'm backed up to losing I've lost 25 pounds you've lost 25 pounds yeah in that losing of 25 pounds was was reducing your calorie consumption per meal part of the program like less food consumed per meal for sure I just well I just kind of got back into eating on my own sort of hunger pattern uh-huh so yes I was I'd say that I was eating less okay yeah because I'm only eating I'm still eating two sometimes three meals a day yeah but I'm doing there's long periods of
time between when I eat yeah I'm intermittent fasting just kind of naturally now okay sure here's another dope or dirt that just came up now okay fasting I think it's totally dope aha so you're this is interesting it's you're kind of on the side of dirt for taking home leftovers but your dope for fasting yes fasting is really good for you okay yeah have you have you done fasting your whole life or have you only started doing it more recently so in terms of like doing a long extended fast I've only done like three of them in my life okay where I haven't eaten anything for like to say three to five days okay uh and every time it's been you know a great experience and I feel really good after it yeah but I'm a firm believer in intermittent fasting and it's just I kind of just fell into it but it's always how I just sort of ate naturally and then things in life have sort of thrown it thrown the way that I naturally eat off you know sort of scheduling
or my job or whatever it was and so now that I'm kind of jelling into my job and I'm not sort of eating with other people as much and on their patterns like I don't eat anything in the morning until 11 I you don't eat any breakfast typically not wow yeah I'll just have a couple of I can't function without I have a cup of coffee and I'm out the door and then I will have a little yogurt banana blueberry granola around 11 and then I'll have maybe lunch around two or three wow and it's a light lunch and then I'll have dinner with the wife around six or seven and then from seven to eleven the next morning you don't eat I don't eat anything I can't do that yeah that'll change that'll change a little bit when I start you know waking up earlier I'm waking up at 6 30 or no I'm sorry I'm waking up at five thirty five forty five now for work and then when that even bumps up sooner for ski season I'll probably start eating a little something before I'm out the door but that's it'll be minimal I'll eat something small in the morning before a big
backcountry ski and then I'll eat I'll eat a ton of food when I get off the hill hmm okay yeah I'm I'm in a naturally an intermittent faster okay and I lost that's why I put on some weight as I was I was eating not eating into my patterns with my job the first year or two yeah I was having a lot of lunches big lunches yes I want to win some lunch yeah lunch at noon was just not working for me man I could yeah fasting as to something that you've ever done you've never done a fast no no how I do I I just I burn mass calories I think it's my big ass I think I have an ass that just consumes calories and your legs your legs in your hands Tom I have a hungry butt you know you have a hungry tongue I have a hungry tongue I have a hungry butt that always has to be eating and I think it's just I think I've always been that way as a kid as in growing up like I've always been
high energy so I've always been doing things I always you know so much on says I'm a working dog that'll eat the furniture if I don't get outside right I'm just constantly like I got a exercise the demons you know I got to like if I don't exercise I just get all stir crazy and grumpy and just and I have to be constantly doing and that takes energy that takes calories and I find that I eat I mean I eat pretty well and I eat regularly um but I have to have breakfast when I wake up in the morning like it's a ritual like I don't have breakfast I can't function I get super hungry I get super like low blood sugar and and get totally grumpy and hanger I get hanger hanger is a thing in our household for both you guys for both oh yeah fully like anytime one of us is upset or angry food solves the problem fully like if swanja is like you know
very like stand office or she'll be just like yes no answers to questions or just like trying to not talk to me and then I'll just be like when was the last time you ate I haven't eaten anything all day well are you gonna take care of that problem I mean she knows that she's like hasn't eaten and that she's hangry but she sometimes doesn't do anything about it I literally have to like either make her food or we have to suggest we go out to dinner but as soon as she gets some food in her she's totally fine she's back to normal everything's good so it's one of these things where it's like we have to be monitoring each other in our hanger levels and making sure that we're accommodating are you guys always walking around with like a cliff bar in your pocket I do I generally yeah if I'm going out to run errands I'm bringing a couple snacks oh yeah because you never know what's gonna happen you could get stuck in traffic you know you could be you know I don't even know what like this you you go on an extra errand or you get lost or you ask AI how do I get to this place and it sends you up Hennessebass road and then you're in the middle of the woods with a
flat tire you just never know snack man's prepared snack man's prepared I mean he got to be so anyway yeah fasting really is I would like to maybe try it at some point but I would have to have a plan of not doing anything for however many days I'm fasting I can't do any activity I literally have to be like a monk and just sit there no that's not true for me I have a very I think that's sensitive stomach I think that's what would be I think that would be surprised would be surprising to you is that like so many of your patterns are just like habit and when you fast when you fast it makes you realize that like oh you're just doing that at a certain time of day because it's it's habit yeah it's not because you're hungry it's habit you may know it's I mean you're right your stomach when you fill it to a certain capacity it's like a gas tank when it gets down to a certain like the food empties out of your stomach to a certain level there are triggers that form
in your stomach if you eat a certain number of calories a day that will trigger to your brain hey I'm hungry again hey I'm empty again but if you fast that that trigger it it goes away yeah and you can function on like less fuel but I just haven't committed myself to that you should try it because I haven't had a need to I feel like but I don't know yeah maybe I'll maybe do I'm going to probably do another one when I'm done with my work here I'll fat do another two three four day fast yeah and you can get you can you can buy little kits too where you know that it's not a complete and total fast but you just go to liquid like a liquid diet yeah and you can have a little soup at night a little something in the morning and then that's that's all you have for three or four or five days it's really it's really good for your digestive system well you know I actually did fast for 24 hours once Tom when was that when I had my first colonoscopy yeah yeah yeah yes that fasted yeah and it was miserable hated it so and by the way just a hot here's a here's
a hot pro tip on colonoscopies for anybody who's about to go do one for the first time you you would think the morning appointment would be the good one you're like oh I want to get it done with I want to get it over you got to stay up all night drinking that crap you want to do the afternoon appointment because you don't start drinking the stuff that really cleans you out until five in the morning so you just get up early yeah you start drinking the stuff and then by three pm you have your appointment and you're out and you can function if you do the morning appointment you have to stay up all night the night before yeah so I did it it was and then you get shit lag it's miserable it's miserable so hot tip if you're because you know it's funny our demographic I mean we have folks in their 20s and 30s that listen to us but we also have a lot of folks in their 40s and 50s that listen to us and so this is the thing I just reality it's just I mean if you're taking care of yourself you're gonna have one of these at some point or another so just do the afternoon appointment it's the hot it's the hot take on the colonoscopies yeah I back you up on that one he's I was miserable the whole night yeah yeah I don't know how the hell we started we started with
taking leftovers home from a restaurant and we're on colonoscopies all right so let's change it up dope or dirt paying money to park and ride mountain bike trails okay so so paying money to park to park to park to park and then go ride and then go ride well I mean it's pretty dirt but if it's if it's if it's a if it's a necessary evil because of the place and the demand for it like I've actually done that before at the confluence of the American River mm-hmm park to the bottom everybody has wants paid the park and then realize there's free parking on the other side of the river well no or up in the neighborhood and you can go ride man's the need on the way down so yeah I've done that I think so for me that was a big sort of like what the it was a WTF when I moved from Colorado I was living Colorado and then Jackson Hole and then I moved back to Tahoe in California yeah and
California definitely has a little bit more of an established pay to play system yeah because of just the demand yeah and there's just the resources aren't there for the demand and so they make they they can try to control it so my initial knee jerk reaction and in California was like a big FU to having to pay to play but I've come around a little bit on that so it depends I would say it would depend on where it is if it's like in the middle of nowhere and there's no demand like yeah I'm not putting five bucks in an envelope to have someone pick it up a week later and be like oh this sucker paid you know but if it's in a place where there's a ton of people and it's in and I'm willing to pay five bucks and then it creates a spot for me and I can go experience that place yeah I'm okay I'm okay I don't think it's dope but I think it's just a necessary evil to what we're dealing with with places that are overused and undermanaged yeah I don't know what
what made you think of that well so there was a recent article about Squamish asking people Squamish British Columbia asking people to contribute money to the trails as most riders are out of towners and it costs upwards of $400,000 a year to maintain the trails in Squamish and you know the response to a lot out of towners is that you know they're already spending a bunch of money in town at the businesses and you know but those tourism dollars don't fund the trails yep right yep yep so how do you how do you fund a trail network with visitor money when visitors are going to want to bulk at that notion because they're like well my money is already supporting the community I'm paying money to stay at hotel or to go to a restaurant or go to the bike shop or and but trying to communicate yeah but that doesn't pay for the maintenance of the trails that you're riding so we've had the person on the podcast who's actually executed this really well which is Matt Jappel I have that right here so yep the the model for that is what Truckie Derrienean has
been able to do yeah which is create a culture of trail building and fostering that trail network and making it a thing and making it cool and making people really want to be a part of it and it's fun to be a part of it and then you put up like they did the little QR codes along the trail and the people if if if there was something that visitors could let and feel like they were a part of when they visited Squamish and be like oh yeah cool we were riding the trails with this you know this network and it's cool and I follow them on Instagram now and then there's a QR code when they park or at the top of their climb yeah they're gonna get that's that's how you do it yeah and then you ask that way yeah and you make you make them feel included instead of excluded yeah I like it yeah does that make sense yeah so that was my response to that was taking a trucky approach the QR codes you know and also the town of trucky right the the tools the two sales tax measures that directly fund trails if you want visitors to pay for trails you
can't force them to pay for trails yes you give them volunteer opportunities like the QR codes right or you make them pay without realizing they're actually paying by working with elected officials to pass measures that fund trails through sales tax yep and so we experienced this one in the restaurant there was a few years where the trucky down our land trust actually was hitting up all the restaurants for us to put a dollar surcharge on every check and then and then you know we were you know and then we could say oh yeah we're a supporter of the trucky trails or truck I think it was trucky down our land trust and our restaurant at the time did it and the initial push of that was people got pissed they're like what's this dollar on my check and we're like well it's for you know it's for a good nonprofit and we're giving all the money to them and people are like yeah no interesting I did not ask for that and then and then it started affecting the server's tips
they're like well shoot if you're gonna charge me a buck I'm gonna give the server five the last bucks fuck you know that screw that yeah but oh yeah we just leave a terrible taste in people's mouth and so then we made it optional where it was like check the box if you would like to donate to the trucky down our land trust and even that was offensive to people so again it's about it's how it's portrayed and and it's it's about the optics of it and like forcing it on people like that is not cool and you know you won't it'll create a bad reaction but if again like trucky deer in union if you make people feel included in a movement and and make it cool instead of forcing it on someone that's how you raise money for trails yeah yeah so yeah yeah that's interesting that people would bulk at the the dollar oh for sure yeah and you know and now the modern thing in restaurants now is people are restaurants now are putting search charges on checks
on top of taxes to help fund the employees at healthcare and some people have take a you know our objective to that oh just charge more for the food that's it's already like you mentioned it's already super expensive so a small search charge we can go a long ways and there are some successful restaurants here locally I'll give them kudos and they're giving them you know the servers are working there for five days a week they're getting out there which is huge yeah so I'm a I'm a I support it I support those restaurants and I don't bulk at it but some people do yeah yeah that's you just can't force things on people now it's just to be voluntary especially yeah especially financial things yep yeah all right here's here's a couple quick doper durps doper durps listening to a podcast in 1.5 or 2.0 speed oh that one I so I don't do that I don't I don't either I don't do that I hear people do do that I wonder what we sound like
in 1.5 are we like Alvin in the chipmunks maybe I think you just hate that ice cream man a little bit faster I wonder I wonder if the people who hate snack man is because they're listening to the podcast in 1.5 speed and something about snack man and 1.5 speed is even more irritating than snack man and normal speed I don't know I don't do it so I'm dead I'm but I'm not I feel like I'm not that crunched on time neither am I so I like to slow down a little bit if anything I know I'm not trying to be the best at listening to podcasts I don't need to win podcast listenership yeah okay here's one more this is a musical doper durp Neil diamonds sweet Caroline doper durp Neil diamonds sweet I mean Neil diamond just in general is dope all the way around so dope
even sweet Caroline does that song not irritate you not like the ice cream man does you but no I mean it's not it's not like I'm gonna drive home to after recording tonight and listen to that song but when you're at a stadium or when you're at a party and that's should song comes out are you are you going bomb bomb bomb every time that the bomb bomb bomb part comes on or do you just sit there and protest silently and not do the bomb bomb bomb or they're so good so good so good so good do you do that shit no I don't okay I'm a little bit of a wallflower when it comes to that stuff so I don't know I mean I just like Neil diamond I like Neil diamond I'm a dirt on sweet Caroline because people have ruined it for me I think that you just it's all about people yeah it's not the song it's how people react to it oh you're right yeah people have ruined it for me don't don't don't don't ruin a lot of things don't hate the message hate the messenger yes yes don't hate the player hate the game yeah well in this case don't hate yeah the writer of
the song or the performer hate the people listening to it yeah or or the fans were the the fact that you have to like play along or is that what you're not liking about the song I just I just find it super annoying when everybody's adding and adding commentary to a song that doesn't need commentary added to it you know the bomb bomb bomb and the so good and the whatever else they do and I don't know and maybe this is just like triggering for me because I think it kind of started in Boston if I'm not mistaken like a red socks games they were they playing sweet Caroline I don't know God all the time oh yeah this is like a trial childhood trauma for you or something and then it's become a phenomenon right like everywhere you hear it now it's like a thing like every time you can't you can't not hear sweet Caroline without the bomb bomb bomb and the so good so good you can't like it just it won't happen if you're in a public space in that song comes on somebody's going to be singing that shit and it's just I don't know it ruins it for me yeah I think you just have like a
that that brings back childhood memories so for have ever told you about how I have ski bull songs yeah what ski bull songs ski bull ski bull song so the ski bull song ski bull song is a song that I listened to over and over and over again at the Michigan ski bull skiing my local Hill in Michigan called Mullgens Hollow okay and it was one little tow rope that went up and then you know on the when we got big snow and they would open up the backside yeah yeah there was a T-bar back there that we raised the local IMCA raised money for that T-bar and then that was the that back hill but the back hill wasn't always open but the front hill was a tow rope that ran in a million miles an hour yeah way too fast so everyone had to wear leather glove protectors and we would zip around you go flying up the hill on this tow rope and then it was all lit so we would it was night it was always night skiing yeah and you know on weekends I would go there during the day sometimes but we would just lap it boom up down up down up down up down up down but they had a speaker not
only was there lights but there was a speaker system there that would blare music around the whole place no matter where you were at the ski bull you could hear what was playing and they used to play sunny one oh one oh four point five FM sunny FM radio hey it's right tail rig yeah it was it was rat tail rig and sunny one or four point five FM and they played like the top ten songs of the 80s yes on repeat on repeat yes over and over and over again and so I have a whole catalog of songs that I hear yeah and I'm like oh that's a ski bull song it's a ski bull song and I just and I know every way I'm a whang chong uh yeah Wang chong uh he was still calm still Collins still Collins he was in the studio so all the dude dude dude dude dude dude dude eight sides hacks to studio it was like yeah I was at the ski bull from like 1983 82 83 84
yeah and I was skiing yeah but then snowboarding started and I started snowboarding there and I think I stopped going to the ski bull when I moved to trucky in 1989 so it was probably not even quite good time for music it wasn't quite a full ten years but it was like from 81 to 88 yeah yeah and I had there's a catalog of songs any money yes to take us to paradise to take us to paradise yes just rip and rip and lat well were you shredding power were you just skiing schmoo mmm it was sort of icy icy frozen re frozen man man landfill snow so the ski bull was not a landfill it's actually on a dune oh yeah so it was like sand snow yeah it was sand snow yeah there was beach grass growing out of it lake effect yeah we get some lake effects snow there but yeah those are that's so that's I have so and for me it's fun memories like I hear those songs I love 80 and I'm like yeah and ski bull music I love I love 80s top 40 I grew up and I mean I think a lot of us did like the backseat of my mom's car you know just hearing all those songs on the radio
all the time still loving today yeah me too yeah ski bull songs I like that that's dope the next the next time we're out and about and then when it'll come on it'll be like dude ski bull ski bull song yeah like journey oh yeah all that stuff oh yeah so yeah death leopard I love death leopard I'm shook on me you know death leopard I will say now we're I like this now we're into the music phase of the show uh we I saw them live one time and they have so many hits you forget how many hits they actually have until you see them live and then they play like horse and sugar on me you're like that sounds so good and then they play rocket you're like oh that sounds so good and then they play hysteria you're like that oh my god that's like they just like keep hitting you with hits yeah after hit after hit and you realize damn death leopard crushed the 80s with one arm drummer Rick Allen he only had one arm dude and they were kicking everybody's ass with a one arm drummer
they were pretty good they were pretty damn good and you know the other interesting thing this is like real like music not more of a scorpion fan were you yeah I was more of a death leopard I don't I like the upbeat a beatedness of death leopard it it was like very uplifting and scorpions was a little darker yeah the death leopard was very positive yeah very positive heavy metal yeah they and so is de f le p p a r d right I thought it was that was how you spell it it was de f i d f le p p a r d well led zeppelin was led d c p p l i n so I wonder if death leopard was influenced by led zeppelin like the the naming convention of that because it's very similar and they're both British bands both rock death leopard came on the scene right is led zeppelin was like and yeah they were ending their their their run um anyway music Zeppelin Zeppelin was still better though oh is that no without question now is that
lunch my all-time favorite I mean number one for me is Zeppelin for sure yeah I actually just Robert plant uh it was on tiny desk oh really yeah no kid it was really good yeah those tiny desk concerts are are quite good you know the other concerts I like to watch on youtube or kk exp you ever watch any of the k exp stuff yeah um man there's a band I have you ever heard of the O C's now OS EES so this is a band to check out there my buddy Jeff introduced me to them and I like I like them at times and then at other times it's too much um and one of the k exp performances I saw like a teaser on facebook or your instagram or something and they were playing this really awesome song it's very punk it's very like you know like metal punk um surf kind of style and uh and so I heard the song I'm like oh that's a good song man I got to look up the live performance and
I look up the live performance like k exp on youtube and um the first three songs are just like screamo metal the guys just like literally like eight minutes he's just like screaming into the microphone un like unintelligible you can't tell what he's actually trying to say very angry you know they have two drummers you don't see bands with two drummers anymore it's like kind of a dead thing you know the doobie brothers used to do it the almond brothers used to do it the grateful dead used to do the grateful dead used to do it but the OCs had like two drummers in the studio playing while he's just like screaming and I'm like okay yeah this isn't working for me and then and then they had one song that was like really freaking good where I'm like god just play more of that but anyway I got into their their lexicon of work you know their discography a little more and they do have a lot of good songs but every now and again they're playing some like screamo punk where I'm just like yeah it's a little too harsh for my my taste but I would recommend checking out OCs if you haven't that's a good one instead of Neil Diamond on the way home I'm
gonna put them and I've been back into the I've been back into the all them witches movement lately dude I all them witches man they keep rising to the top of my list they are incredible they are so for I really want to see those guys live they're insane incredibly good band we'll see if they're doing another winner tour this year yeah tie that one in trying a little ski road trip and all them witches we can try and see if we get Cosby to come with us because we don't want to see them yeah man so anything else on your list hmm I think that's it buddy cool oh I do want to give up one one quick mention um we forgot to mention this so there's a workshop uh on September 9th so that'll be happening right about the time that this episode drops September 9th at the trucky Meadows Community College Meadowwood Center in Reno 5270 Neil Road September 9th from 4pm to 7pm the
Tahoe Meadows winter safety workshop so if you ski if you backcountry ski or you hike or you snowmobile or you do any activity up in Mount Rose Meadows you know Highway 431 the famous spot where everybody parks everybody parks on the shoulder of the highway and goes sledding it's the access point for relay peak if you're going snowmobiling it's you know backcountry skiing what would you access like I guess incline peak you could access from there yeah I mean all this incline peak and relay and howton and also you know tying into the Gleena Bowls and all it's everything yeah Mount Rose proper all that stuff yeah yeah I mean this is a touchy subject so that it's the winter wildlands alliance with people who is trying to stop snowmobiles snow lands alliance snowlands sorry snowlands snowland some network or some shit yeah I mean this has been going on for a while I mean here's the thing that that whole zone up there is something needs to be done
there needs to be off highway parking that's maintained somehow they've got to get the people off the highway it's a danger but I don't know I mean I I go back and forth on whether snowmobiles should be up there and I know you are feel a little differently about that one but yeah it's called snowlands network and they're they've been there's a woman affiliated with the organization that's been trying to shut down snowmobile access forever I've met her yeah and so she's like vehemently a anti snowmobile and is looking for every opportunity to shut it down so this community workshop is designed to talk about you know fair public access for all maintaining public access and coming up with a master plan for parking to solve the parking issue that's the real issue I have more issues with the parking up there than I do snowmobiles going where they go you know in the snow the shared use up there of snowmobiles and skiers seems to be work like the board works it works the but at least they're it could be better it could be better yeah there could be better sign there could be
better education about it that's the real issue is that there isn't any education people are up there and they just don't know any better yeah taking their sled pass where they maybe should and that's I I spent a ton of time up there as you know yeah and it's really not that bad of an issue it's it's every now and again that's letters are going where they're not supposed to and I really don't have any I have it had less conflicts with sleds up there considering the amount of sled use I mean do you think I mean now you've so I've told you in when we did that day with Anthony where we did um bronco shoots I mean do you see the value and the importance in in sled access to that area I see public I see both sides yeah I see both sides uh I yeah I see both sides of it and I think it you know Tahoe there aren't that many places for for sled access so I think that would be a hit for for sledders to lose that yeah so I I still support them having that as an
access point I just think there needs to be better education about where the boundary is yeah um so anyway um if you can attend the meeting again it's on September 9th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the trucky Meadows Community College Meadowwood Center in Reno 5270 Neal Road if you can't make the uh the workshop and you'd like to share your input if you recreate up there a lot in the winter there is a survey um at this URL it's kind of a funky URL but the URL is you obviously do HTTPS the colon slash slash arc ARCG dot IS forward slash capital G lowercase f capital D capital H lowercase N capital not capital four it's just four GF D H N 4 uh it's and you can leave it comment on and you can fill out the survey oh it's a survey but I wish they would just have a website like
Tahoe Meadows master plan dot com it'd be so much easier but anyway hopefully if you replay what I just said you can find the survey it's hard to do that on a podcast it's a lot easier to say click on this check out this link QR code and go go to the survey but anyway um if that is something that is important to you go to that meeting especially if you're a slater because I I have a feeling there's going to be a contingent of anti-slide people there who are going to be like we shouldn't have sleds up here I think there's not that many people I think you don't think so oh yeah I I when this all happened years ago there was definitely a more of an outpouring of sliders than anti-sliders all right well that's good yeah there's nothing here uh that's at least that's what I remember about it so what do we have coming up in the next few weeks do we have I know that you're working on a couple guests yeah I've got a good guess let's not say too much but yeah there's a good guess I think I like I mentioned does that look like it's still going to happen it does okay yep uh so I'm you're doing that by thing I'm out of here with the wife we
are celebrating our 20th anniversary oh yeah yeah that's good news to my wife and I and I've got a little something I'll report on a little something on from that trip but I did join the little thing called Harvest Hosts okay for for list the van life life with the wife you know I just I can't just pull off on the side of the road like I normally do with the wife yeah so I did go down the rabbit hole of like figuring out some options for where we were gonna stay we're gonna mix it up we're gonna stay in hotel one night and then we're gonna stay with some harvest host on a couple nights I think it was like 120 bucks yeah for the year for an annual pass yeah and there's 10,000 places around the United States that you can ban my fat smart that seems like a good deal it's it does seem like a good deal yeah and then do you pay do you pay the person when you go there too no so some of the people will have like a recommendation that you should buy like a lot of these places are businesses there are a lot of wineries or we're staying at a place that's a winery slash coffee shop
so we can actually like they have land they have yeah they just have land for people to park and then you can stay and then in the morning or in the evening you have to they ask that you support their business while you're there that's a no brain I'm cool with that like you know you don't need them I'm gonna need a coffee in a scone or a salt in the morning anyway anyway in the morning so yeah let's we get a free place to stay and I get a coffee in a croissant out of it so it's it's it's a scratch my back my back I'll scratch yours sort of community and I really like it so I'm curious to see how this works I think there's gonna be two were were staying a night with storm nice in seeing my good buddy that I billbo moved off the hill so we're gonna go hang out with storm down in the sabastipule and then we're gonna stay at a harvest host and then we got a night no hotel and then we have another harvest host killer and some ebike rides nice yeah ebike rides in the wet redwoods so yeah I'm like looking forward to that one and I'll report
back and how it worked and if it was good okay yeah I'd love to hear a report on that because that would definitely be something to look into if you're traveling especially towards the coast I think a lot of the camping I do is out to the east to here yeah and there's no issues there's no we need that's the first race it's hard man you go that way and everything's always sold out and there's like and then you're stuck with this like oh god where do I sleep and like I don't want the knock yep the door I cut it's the worst yeah three and six it's not really would I hate the door knock I hear you buddy it's the worst so yeah I bought the harvest host pass we'll see how it goes all right cool well I haven't have a good trip I'll catch up in a couple weeks and everybody out there I hope you enjoy the next couple weeks and pray for rain and until next time get out get deep and put your mind in the track
much snack man
