On March 2nd, a driver in Smithwick has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison after causing the death of a mother through dangerous driving. Arjan Aliage was behind the wheel of her Mercedes when he struck and killed 62-year-old Baljit Kaur last August. The crash happened on Thimblemo Road around evening rush hour. Aliage sped up to 88 miles per hour, smashing into a parked car where Baljit had just gotten out, then careening into four more vehicles. Before hitting her on the pavement, Baljit was a devoted mother of one and a carer heading home from her shift. Her injuries were so severe that she passed away right there at the scene, leaving her family heartbroken. In court on Monday, the judge detailed how Aliage lost control purely from his excessive speed in a residential area. He pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. With this sentence handed down, authorities hope it sends a strong message on the dangers of high speeds in built-of neighborhoods.
