Dr. Rory O'Hanlon: A Life in Public Service

0:00On March 31st, Dr. Rory O'Hanlon, the former Fianna-Failed TD and Health Minister, has passed away at the age of 92. He first got elected to the Dale for Kavanaughan, back in 1977, and held that seat through nine terms total. As a former general practitioner, he stepped up as Minister for Health from 1987 to 1991, right when budgets were. He had to make some tough cuts to beds and services, earning him the tough nickname, Dr. Death, from opponents. He later served as Ciancom Harley, the speaker of the Dale, from June 2002 until 2007. Before politics, he trained as a doctor at University College Dublin, and ran a practice in Carrick, McCross County, Monahan. He's also the father of comedian Ardall O'Hanlon, best known for father Ted. Ty Seek, Michelle Martin, paid tribute, calling him a valued friend, gifted doctor, and natural public servant, who left a big mark on Irish life. And Fianna fell. He highlighted Rory's passion for his community and his storytelling ways.
