Don't ignore the IRS. This is a money minute from in-charge education foundation and militarymoney.com. There are many reasons people will decide to just ignore the IRS. But in the end, it's always better to come forward than to have the IRS find you. The fact is, a notice from the IRS is the first step in a legal procedure to secure the right to seize your assets. But the IRS will probably not prosecute you for failing to pay your taxes, as long as you voluntarily come forward before they contact you, and arrange to pay what you owe. The IRS.gov website spells out some options for those short on cash, including payment by a credit card, installment plans, even negotiation, all of which are much better than sticking your head in the sand. Remember, the penalties for ignoring the IRS are much worse than coming forward. If you've been ignoring the IRS, get in touch with them as soon as possible and hire a reputable tax attorney.
