We talk about the differences between your epoxy process and the others, the others promote the one day. And that's actually a negative. Yeah, yeah, so it's kind of nice that they promote the one day because that's one of the things I tell people we specifically don't want to do that, right? Big part of our process is putting a vapor barrier down on the floor and that is an epoxy product. You hear a lot of companies tell you stay away from epoxy. We like that it's an epoxy product. This is going to cure slower. It's going to soak into the concrete more. And it's our undercoat. So the drawbacks to epoxy is yellowing and fading in the sun. That's all underneath everything we're doing. So none of that's going to be exposed to the sun. And we use our products in the right order that we're supposed to. So we don't have the drawbacks to yellowing. We get the benefit of a polyaspartic topcoat.

16:26So all they're talking about that harder than epoxy is stronger than a epoxy type of things. We also offer that benefit as our topcoat and just in a 15-year warranty. Absolutely, yeah. And one thing our warranty includes that a lot of don't is that moisture protections so we're able to put that vapor barrier down. And it'll actually kind of treat the concrete itself. So in some cases, you may have some peeling coming up on the floor and a company is going to come out and tell you, well, it's not a problem with the coating. It's a problem with the concrete. Your concrete is saturated with water. So it's not covered under warranty because it's not the coating that failed. There you go. But we're coming in. We're going to treat the concrete. We're going to make sure that concrete doesn't go. So that's a really good point. That vapor barrier really makes a big difference, especially in our climate. Absolutely. In our 18 years now business has been the number one failure for a floor as moisture build up in the concrete. There you go. So you can avoid that by going to Gorilla and avoid the one-day application with their three-day process. It's going to be a little bit more involved,

17:29but you're going to get the benefit from it on the longevity. And at the home show here, this is a great opportunity to meet all the different companies here. 19:33There's some movement that I want to talk about in the energy, I guess we'll call it energy crisis. The governor seems to be moving a little bit towards the middle, which we're actually happy about. And the Buffalo Niagara Builders Association has put out a press release in respect to this. The rising energy mandates a threatened housing affordability for New York families, which is a real issue. We hear about this a lot, and you've heard the governor talk about affordability. And there's nothing that smacks in the face more on affordability than the cost of running a house and also building a house. So the Builders Association kind of making an official stance by saying that builders, contractors, and working families across New York are already grappling with the nation's most challenging housing market. Do you know that our energy consumption, our energy costs

20:34here are 45% electricity, 45% higher than the average state across the nation? As the state pursues an aggressive energy transition, new mandates under the CLCPA threatened to drive construction costs even higher, push homeownership further out of reach. A recent internal analysis by the New York State Energy Research Development Authority has warned of potentially significant increases in fuel and energy costs if the current mandates are implemented without meaningful adjustments. Those projections should be taken seriously. And this is the whole essence of the statement they're making. The Buffalo Niagara Builders Association estimates that certain electrification mandates and energy requirements could add $25,000 or more to the cost of building a new home. Can you believe that? A burden that could prevent many first-time buyers from qualifying for a mortgage.

21:34So we seem to have backed ourselves into a corner here. The idea of being green, no one's opposed to that, but the fact that it costs so much more to get to that point, including the cost of construction, is really exacerbating the affordability side. So the energy policy should prioritize reliability, affordability, and consumer choice. And that is the thing that we're emphasizing now is the idea of people having a choice. And like I said, the governor seems to be coming more to the middle on this. We're going to continue to monitor and stay on top of it and keep you in the loop as we've promised we would here on WBEN. And this is a step in the right direction when we start to see a dialogue that's focused on affordability. Because until now, we really haven't had any respect paid to the issue of affordability. 26:42Mayor Sean Ryan announced yesterday that the city of Buffalo has received over 1,000 applications for the mayor's summer youth internship program, causing the city to close the application portal and allow staff in the Department of Community Services and Recreational Programming to begin reviewing submissions. The mayor's summer youth internship program connects young adults with local employers to gain hands-on experience, develop workplace skills, all while also exploring potential career paths as selected applicants will be contacted in the coming weeks with the next steps. The band is left bayonet land with a wind last night as they took down the Colorado Mammoth 1310, which now leaves the team with a 7 and 6 record and in seventh place in the NLL standings. And how are you, 803-093-O? Look who stopped in to say hello. Yep, it's Captain Sandy from Below Deck. Hey, Sandy. Hey, good morning. Nice to meet you. Yeah, I'm glad to have you. And of course, we're looking forward to your presentation on the stage and your visit to our booth afterwards. It's really great to meet you. I'm a big fan of the show. And I've admired you all over all the years.

36:01And it's one thing interesting about yachts. They're luxurious spaces, but they're small. Compared to a mansion, which is a big space, that's luxurious. How do you make that comparison? You want something to be concise, but yet luxurious. And your guests have to be happy with this small space. Is that a challenge for a boat? No, because over the years, they've perfected small spaces, just like in homes designed. So they take every space and utilize it. So there's no space that's not utilized on a yacht. And I love it because you have to be really organized. So that's key, because the smaller the space, the more organized you need to be. And I learned a lot about organization. And so I actually implement that into my home. That's awesome. Less is more when it comes to space, then, right? Now, the ship you're on now, the boat you're on now, seems to me newer to me of this lease the last season. What's the name of the ship you're on now?

37:02Bravado. Bravado is a newer boat? Yeah, well, yeah, they're newer, but you have to think about this. If you want a big luxury yacht, also there's a budget. We can only afford certain vessels and most of them are quite old. So we get lucky. Lady Michelle was our best boat that we ever had on the show. It's always fun to watch you in action. And I'm going to get into a discussion about how you interact with the staff, because that seems to be the biggest dynamic in a separation. You're trying to be professional. And run the boat like it should be run as a professional captain. And then the rockiness that occurs on the television show with the young people. But before we get into that, would you agree that the docking process is the most complicated of all your responsibilities? Yes, yes, yes. It all depends on the weather, the wind, the current, the local conditions, and where you're located.

38:03So when we back a boat in, we have chains and ground lines that we have to be careful with to get past those. And we have stabilizer fins that are on the sides of our boat. So we also have to clear the fins as well. Now we've had quite a windy night, as you might have witnessed from your hotel room. This was, I think, a real extreme wind condition. But being right here at the end of Lake Erie, where it's conducive for a lot of wind, is probably our biggest weather enemy is our high wind. And that is your weather enemy, too, for disappointing your guests when you can't go out. Exactly, because wind is, it can be our friend or our enemy. And a lot of times when it's really windy, the seas kick up, of course, like in the Mediterranean, you have all the perines, the French Alps, you have all these mountains. And I like to say that the mountains, it could be a beautiful day and very sunny. And then all the sun, you have all this wind. And it comes through the mountains.

39:05It's like the hot air and the cold air don't like each other. And they just blow it out and create big waves. It's not safe. So that's when we have to stay on the dock. But we don't want to stay on the dock, because it creates more work for the crew. Of course, they've got to do extra to enter to extra steps, entertain the guests. Speaking about the guests, it's always fun to watch the guests when they act truly bizarre, and especially when they over consume alcohol. You seem like all the captains seem like they remove themselves from that interaction with the guests when they get particularly wild. Is that on purpose to keep you looking more professional? No, I am professional. So when you're serving people, it's like if you go into a five-star hotel, like you, you're there and the expectation from the client is they want five-star service. For me, I just grew up in yachting and hospitality.

40:09And I know what it takes. So I know if I'm not professional to my crew, then they're not going to act professional. So I have to emulate what I want them to do. Well said. Well said. And having said that, the crew, I know that's for television. And correct me if I'm wrong. But it seems like that's played up for television when they have their party time. So it's not, first of all, our show is not scripted at all. Everything you see actually really happens. And they act like that. We're not actors, right? Because you could tell if they're playing up to the camera. They are not. They consume alcohol. And there's no filter. And that's what happens. Now the show does not give them alcohol. They buy their own alcohol. They show buys their dinner, their food, but that's it. Now you do not consume alcohol. No, I'm sober. I used to, and I was always in trouble. I was on that merry-go-round. And wow, it was terrible. And just a mess. And I got sober.

41:10I have a sponsor. I worked at 12 steps at 25. And that's why I'm living a life beyond my wildest dreams. That's great. So you're in the Mediterranean now. Is that where you'll stay for the upcoming seasons? I don't know. Like I hope so. I love the Mediterranean. I hope I wish we could film in France, but tax laws, it's like harder. So the show has a budget. We can't really go over that. The network decides the budget. And the production company has to fit it all in within that budget. So sometimes that's why you see older boats. And with older boats, you get more problems because they are older, kind of like your body. Exactly. And your house, too. Exactly. Now do the guests pay a fee? Yeah, of course they do. The guests, they have to have skin in the game. And it's not a cheap show to film. Right. That's an expensive show because they charter a yacht. We pay for dockage, we pay for fuel, the food. The guests also have to buy their alcohol. Are they counseled on the tip?

42:11Or is that just out of their heart from their heart? Yeah, I believe that they talk to them about that. But I think people also do it because based on they see how hard the crew work. That's what gratuities for. All right. OK. I understand a little bird told me that you're a big Buffalo Bills fan. Yes, I love Dion. Yeah, like I got introduced to him through Scott Dansey. And it was cool. Like Dion's cool, his mom's birthday was a few days ago. I got to see the locker room, which was very cool. Yeah, I'm a Buffalo Bills fan. I'm sorry they didn't win the Super Bowl. Yes. Oh, wait. I'm so sorry because I know how hard they work. Oh my god. That is a sore subject, Sandy. It's Dominic Cortes coming to you live from the Buffalo Home Show. Home Show runs to APM today. And at 1 o'clock, I'll be helping this young lady up on the main stage. And she is Sandy Han, the captain from below deck Mediterranean. We're talking about the Mediterranean. And of course, being that our families from Italy and seeing you pull into Italian ports really warms my heart, especially the port of Genoa. It's absolutely gorgeous. Thank you. Genoa, I love that town. Like, people are like all Genoa, because it's very industrial. There's so much history there.

47:16Let's just talk about Pesto. It came from Genoa. That's where it came from. So so many things came from Genoa. And did you know Genoa was the finance of Europe for many, many years, through salt. And they financed, it's so interesting because Christopher Columbus lived in Genoa, went to ask for money to do the crossing. The Genoa Visi said no. So he went to Spain. That's right, Alejandro. That's right. And then the Genoa Visi loan spained the money for him to cross. That's a great piece of history there. You know, when we talk about the boats being compact but luxurious. As I mentioned already, that's kind of an oxymoron to how we want our homes to be. We want our homes to be large and luxurious. How do you find that dichotomy? Like you mentioned your own home. You try to be concise and minimalistic and you're in your focus. So I'm going to give you two answers there. Obviously space is everything, right? So the one thing yachts do is storage in your couch, right?

48:19Everything's custom made. They don't go and buy a couch is off the shelf, right? They're built for the space, which is a little more money but the design for storage, everything. We have to put pillows somewhere. We have to put, you know, provisions, because we're not running to the grocery store. Where are the provisions going? I always wondered that. Like when they have all these suitcases that they come on the boat with, what do all those go? In the bilge, you know, so we find places for luggage. Also, I just want to say this for design. So one thing that's really important to owners is noise, sound. So they go on with their decilometers and they want a certain amount of quietness. Air conditioning, you were talking about that earlier. The one thing yachts do. So when you're in your house, you see the square vents and it's so loud and it kicks on. Doesn't happen on yachts, you know why? Because it's a lot of air going through a little vent. So they extend the vents. So when you go on boats, they hide the intake.

49:19So you don't see the vent. So it's hide in a sofa or somewhere where the fresh air makeup is. And then they make the vents bigger, like that's a big vent. But with boats, they make them long and sleek. So you don't hear the air conditioning when it's full blast. So is your room a pretty sound proof then? So you don't hear the kids rock using at night? The sun boats, yes, it depends on the boat builder, you know, and the quality of that. Because remember, we also have to think about weight. So weight is a big thing on water, because you need it to float, right? You can't have a whole tree inside your boat. So wood is very thin. They use a lot of sound down on the walls and on the hull. So that works. When you're dealing with the young folks on the boat, do you dread having to discipline and perhaps let somebody go? Of course, it's never easy to crush someone's spirit, knowing that they already messed up. So to me, it's like, give them the positive.

50:22You're firing them already. Tell them what they did, how they can correct it, and then say, you know, but you're great in these areas. So focus on that. Like, there's always a lesson and a teachable moment for them. Yeah. I mean, that is a viable career path, is it not? Oh, my gosh, it's incredible. I have a charity that we're doing in an in-school curriculum. State of Florida paid for it. We're trying to take it national. It is a lot of money to create curriculums and distribute them. It's not cheap. And we rolled it out in high school, middle school, and now elementary school to teach kids about the jobs that are in this marine industry, because if you want to go to sea, no problem. But if you want to be land-based, like electricians, plumbers, carpenters, make 20% more, the benefits are really wonderful. And you travel the world if you are with a boat builder and you're, you know, you want to stay home because you have a family that's very different. Like, you could be a yacht sales. They make a lot of money. Sure. Charter brokers, design, like design.

51:24Like, it here, everything, everything you do in a home, plus you have the added-it engineering side, mechanics. Like, there were really short mechanics. Like, it's such a fascinating career. And if you want to work at sea, you travel the world. You learn different languages. You're immersed in different cultures. Fascinating. Would you say that the weakest link is the food when you have a chef that might not buy the mindset of the guests? On the TV show, yes. But on your yachting, we hire chefs. Like, you know, chefs work really hard to actually have that title. Sometimes I get really frustrated because a lot of these... Family style. Oh my gosh. Josh. I don't get it. It's harder for the interior staff, but if you want family style, you'll just make your food at home. You know, people would like to be served it. You want it to feel like it's seven star. Like, if you go to a restaurant, you are served, right?

52:26Even in a Houston's, what, I don't know, any restaurant. They bring your food. It's all about the service, the interaction of that. And everybody's looking at everybody's dish. Instead of one bowl, you know, like you're looking at the design that the chef put into plating and the colors and the combinations of the food. That's art. And that's what real chefs do. So that relates to the question that comes from, in my mind, to that is, what about the sophistication of the guests? I mean, what if they don't care? I mean, do you see that, too? Yes, of course, if they say I want home style, don't offer that, let the guests ask. Okay. I mean, don't offer, hey, we'll do home style. It's like saying, do you want the water toys out? You think they're gonna say yes? They're gonna feel bad because you have to launch them. I told the crew, they, you launch everything. Make it a choice for them. The slides, no fun, though. Yeah, I don't care. They're putting it out. Yeah, the food seems to be always an issue.

53:26And of course, the preference sheets. That's gotta be a source spot for the chef to have to deal with all these different preferences and allergies and choices. I always say to the chef, you have to manage the expectations. You go into a restaurant, you're not giving them your menu. You're reading off of a menu. So I, in the charter world of yachting before TV, one person decides the menu and that's the person paying because how it works is one person pays and brings their friends. And then of course, the chef wants to accommodate vegetarians and but that's always a choice. So the vegetarian dish is usually vegan and usually gluten free because it's vegetarian. You know what I mean? I always say to the crew, it's me, you have to please. You're not gonna please everyone. As long as you meet my standards, I'm cool. They can complain to me. I'm good. Well, that's a good perspective. Well, Sandy, we're looking forward to your presentation at one o'clock and I'll be up on the stage with you

I'm Pam Housseau, Fox News. President Trump says U.S. forces obliterated military targets on Carg Island. The island sits in the Persian Gulf about 16 miles off Iran's coast and handles roughly 90% of Iran's crude oil exports. Mr. Trump said oil infrastructure was spared for now but warned the U.S. could target it if shipping through the straight of her moves remains threatened. Meanwhile, the U.S. says, Tripoli and thousands of Marines are headed to the region along with additional warships and fighter jets. New details about the six U.S. service members killed in Iraq during a refueling mission. Foxes Steve Harrigan reports from the Iranian border.

55:29The names of the six have not yet been released but Ohio Governor Mike DeWine says that three of the six were members of the Ohio Air National Guard. That refueling plane and Air Force plane went down over Western Iraq Thursday, 2 p.m. Eastern time. That would be 9 p.m. bag that time just after dark. This is a remote western part of Iraq. All six crew members killed. Military officials have been clear to say that there was no enemy fire involved, no friendly fire involved. Now there was a second aircraft involved in that incident. That second aircraft was able to land safely right now and investigation into the cause of the crash is underway. The crash brings the number of U.S. service member deaths to at least 13. The live nation antitrust trial will resume next week after the ticketing giant failed to reach a settlement with a group of state attorneys general. In a hearing Friday, the judge said the states dropped their motion for a mistrial. Dozens of state attorneys general are accusing live nation of illegally monopolizing the live events industry

It's 11 0 2 30 degrees with cloudy skies and windy and buffalo from the WBN newsroom. I'm Chris Jacquebello, our top stories today. Opening day postponed and the sabers look to get back on track. The WBN first alert forecast calls for milder temperatures on the way with highs in the 50s tomorrow in Monday. Here's what's happening with high winds this morning in a few fliers opening day for the Buffalo Naval Park, which was supposed to be today has been postponed as they are looking to open at a later date when conditions are safer. The Naval Park is also working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the United States Coast Guard, and the city of Buffalo to support preservation and environmental remediation as a recent inspection saw a discharge of petroleum products from one of the fuel tanks aboard the USS Croaker.

57:32But this does not expect to create any hurdles to the rescheduled opening as the Naval Park will provide additional details as they become available. Code Blue has been announced in Erie County in the city of Buffalo, and the shelter on 100 East Tupper Street in Buffalo will be open overnight from seven until seven. Code Blue clients will be allowed at the NFTA Metro Transportation Center from five until seven to get bus tickets to the shelter when Code Blue is called, as clients will not be allowed to wait at the Transportation Center outside of those hours. Mayor Sean Ryan announced yesterday that the city of Buffalo has received over 1,000 applications for the mayor's summer youth internship program, causing the city to close the application portal and allow staff in the Department of Community Services and recreational programming to begin reviewing submissions. The mayor's summer youth internship program connects young adults with local employers to gain hands-on experience, develop workplace skills, all while also exploring potential career paths, as selected applicants will be contacted

58:34in the coming weeks with the next steps. The Sabers are back in action today in Keybank Center, taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs with a seven o'clock puck drop, as they look to stay in first place in the Atlantic Division. Following their loss from Thursday night against the Washington Capitals, head coach Lindy Ruff expressed that mistakes for the reason that cost the team. They were waiting for us to make some mistakes, and we made a few in a third period that, you know, Uco made a couple good saves, a couple of bends and mistakes that led to a breakaway, and that's what they were waiting for. OK, still not hearing you. OK, one more time. OK, good morning, darling. I think you're having me. It's just a dial and I can't get that right. That's OK. OK, Lindy, it's always a pleasure to see you and tell us what's going on at the Herb Company. Herb Company is having a very busy year. The amount of commercial plumbing work that multi-family is explosive right now. We're going to see a lot of new builds going up around the Buffalo area and renovations. Really? Yeah. Probably one of the busiest seasons I've seen in my tenure. And I've been doing commercial plumbing take-offs for about the last six years or so. Well, I'm glad to hear you speak optimistically. We are concerned about the rising cost of energy having an impact on new home construction, however. That is correct.

1:03:42Right now, the only thing that's really in effect for a homeowner is that we're responsible for the delivery of the gas from the road to the house. And I've heard that's roughly about $10,000 that used to be on the utility companies that's now on us. Everything else from some research I was doing this week seems to be at a hold, mostly until 2029. Yeah. Yeah, there's a nice big political football that's being lobbied about this whole topic. And we're kind of trying to monitor it as best we can. Right now, the Biller Association is making a stance based on what NYSERDA just came out with, as far as the increased cost of utility, having an impact. And then tying that in with people voting with their feet and leaving the state because of it all. We'll be interesting to see the official stance the governor takes on this and follow along from there. Right now, she's just decided not to enforce any of the laws that she's come up with, depending on what that court comes out with.

1:04:43And this could go on for years, right? In fairness, she inherited all of this from Cuomo. Yeah. So to be fair, but on the same token, she's done nothing until now to really speak about moderating the stance of what those extreme measures would have done to not only the cost of utility, but also of the cost of construction. I feel like the tax on the grid is mostly what slowed her down up and to this point, enough people came to her and said it wasn't possible. We have to think about all of the data centers and other new buildings that are going up in the area that would increase the load without even switching to something like electrification on new builds. Right, yeah. As I mentioned, we're going to get into the day night rate, which is another whole interesting debate that's or topic regarding the utility rates that's come up, we'll get into that after. If you use at least 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per month, and 20% of your energy uses occurs during the nighttime service hours, you may benefit from the day night pricing option. So there's a lot to this. Your monthly bill is affected by the price of energy and the amount of energy you use. Your energy costs includes a fixed delivery cost from your utility and the supply cost based on the supply option that you have selected. As your energy delivery company, New York State Electric Gas builds and maintains a safer liable system to deliver your energy supply to you. I'm reading from their website. Now, the day night rate, what is it? It's optional, and it's a pricing option that's available to you who qualify based

1:14:57on your historical energy usage and the amount of energy you're able to shift to nighttime hours. The pricing option is measured and billed for two periods of time. Day time is 7am till 11.30pm, nighttime 11.30pm to 7am. It depends on the amount of electricity you use, and when you use it as to whether this will save you money. And that is the rub. The delivery cost for this pricing option is the same fixed cost during the day or nighttime. If you purchase your electricity from New York State Electric Gas, daytime supply costs are often higher than the regular residential rate. And that's what we've seen happen, where people end up actually spending more on the day night rate when they think that they're going to save money. Now, conversely, if you can regear your whole processes

1:15:58around your household, and for example, do your laundry at night, you know, charge your car at night. You might benefit from the day night rate. But frankly, when we're talking about living in Western New York, especially for heating and cooling, and in the summertime, running air conditioning, well, you're not going to just run that at night. You're going to run that all day long, and I would be willing to bet you that you're going to see your increased cost and utility consumption, utility cost, based on that fact alone. So it may be right for some people. I don't know if it's right for everyone. And you can check it out. This is right from the New York State Electric Gas website, it's what I've been reading from. And learn more about it. Now, check your bill. You may be on the day night rate, and you not know it. And you may be wondering, you know,

1:16:59why your utility rate is as high as it is, that may be the reason. And we've heard this from others where they didn't realize they were on the day night rate, and they inherited it when their house was previously owned by somebody who was. So I guess it's not an automatic light switch on or off as to whether you are on it or not. You have to opt in or out of it. So check your bill. It should disclose whether you're on the day night rate and then decide for yourself. From what I learned, the rate per kilowatt hour is substantially more. Someone told me, like, 25 cents, where the regular rate's like 11. So we're talking more than double. And I don't know what the night rate is. I think it's got to be less than 11 for it to make sense at all. Be that as it may learn more about the day night

1:18:02rate and whether it works for you by checking out your bill and then contacting. If you are a New York state electric and gas customer, contacting them directly to decide if you want to stay on it or not, I don't really know anybody who is on it. And if you're on it and you'd like to speak about it, I'd like to know what might be an attribute of the day night rate. Right now, as I said, the only thing I can think of would be things like laundry and charging a car, which you can time, where you can't time your comfort. You can't time running a refrigerator. You're going to cook your meals during daytime or evening hours. You're not going to do that in the middle of the night. So I don't know what would be the benefit other than laundry and charging a car. And that's it. That's all I can really think about when we talk about the day night rate.

As we think about everything we do, including right now, as I'm speaking to you, my iPad, being powered by my little lithium charging battery to keep it going, the battery seems to drain quickly on my iPad.

1:45:10So batteries are everywhere and as household batteries die, it's hard to know what to do with them, right? When you think about it, what do you do with a dead battery? Well, some people just throw them in a junk drawer or when no one's looking, throw them in the trash? Yeah, dead batteries can leak heavy metals like cadmium and nickel into the soil and water into a landfill. Some can overheat and cause fire in garage trucks in recycling centers. Safely disposing of batteries just takes a few steps. And they can get shipped to recycling centers that break them down and break their contents down and can reuse them and remake them. And again, as I mentioned with lithium ion being somewhat hazardous, it's important to think about proper battery disposal. Recycling process could use some fine tuning though, but it's still simple and responsible way to get rid of your old batteries.

1:46:11So just don't toss them anymore, listen up and we'll tell you what to do. Recycling them keeps you safe and keeps the waste industry safe and keeps the first responders safe and responsibly sees that the battery reaches its proper end of life. Battery power, batteries power many things in our homes as we all know. Alarm clocks, TV remotes, gaming controllers, I mentioned my iPad. Millions are bought and used every year in the U.S. according to the EPA. They have effects on the environment at nearly every stage of their lifespan. This is a great example of something that we rely heavily on and we don't really think of the consequences of using them. Many of the materials used to make batteries elements such as lithium and nickel are mined. More than half of the world's cobalt reserves are in the country of Congo. Once mined, those materials are shipped around to be refined and fashioned into batteries packaged for sale.

1:47:20All the ships, the trucks and the planes moving them add to the battery's carbon footprint. Making the battery can release carbon emissions and pollution into the air. Though household batteries are far smaller than the big ones that power electric cars and electric bicycles, they are a lot more of them and it's a lot harder to get rid of those. One person's single battery is not necessarily a lot but everyone using many batteries, well that's another story, right? So, wrangle up your old batteries and figure out what kind they are. Batteries come of course in all shapes and sizes. We all know what they are starting from the 9 volt. You always wonder why does something need a 9 volt? And then of course there's the triple A, the double A, the C, the D. What's inside of them does differ and materials are a little bit different.

1:48:22Alkaline and zinc carbon batteries are generally what are used for those single use and they come in the classic double A, triple A. These can be safely thrown into the trash. So there you go if you're wondering about that, double A's, triple A's can go in the garbage. But the EPA does say that if you want to be responsible you can recycle them as well. Now it gets a little bit more complicated. Lithium ion batteries commonly found in things like power tools, cordless vacuums and of course cars. Are a fire risk and can leak toxic gases into a garbage truck and landfills. A lot of rechargeable batteries are indeed made as lithium ion. But more single use batteries are becoming that as well. So be sure to know the difference.

1:49:23And look up the battery disposal laws for New York State. I'm not exactly sure what they are and maybe you do and you can share them with us. Once you've corralled your batteries tape their ends or put them in a plastic bag to avoid the possibility of sparking. So let's repeat that because that's kind of important. If you're going to throw them out tape their ends or even if you're recycling them. Tape their ends and put them in a plastic bag to avoid the possibility of sparking. Then take them to a drop off location. How easy or hard that is depends on where there is one. And I'm not sure on that right now. I guess you could look it up by zip code. And there's many hardware and office supply stores do take them. And you can look up by zip code and using the code the battery network which is a nonprofit geared towards safe battery recycling.

1:50:26Having a location in your home to collect batteries over time and then at some point bringing them all into that drop off that might be a good idea. If your batteries look swollen and are cracked or leaking don't drop them off. You'll need to get in touch with a hazardous waste removal and eerie county does have those from time to time. Batteries dropped off at a collection site are sorted by type. They're taken to a recycling facility where they're broken down into their essential components like cobalt, nickel or aluminum. Some bits can be used to make new batteries or other things. Nickel for example can be used to make stainless steel products and alkaline batteries can be turned into sunscreen. So there you go, new life for old batteries. It's probably worth recycling them just for that reason. Safely recycling a battery does not cancel out the environmental cost of making it however. Still it gives the battery components their best chance at becoming something new which I think we all like.

1:51:31Recycling also reduces the need for more mining and that is good because then they're reusing those minerals. Good battery habits are also good for us and the environment. They protect us against old or damaged batteries leaking toxic components into our cabinets and junk doors. So learning more about batteries and their end of life process and recycling them. I guess we'll have to do a little research on where we might be able to bring old batteries here in western New York. Again if anybody knows about that that might be a good topic for another show. Let's see here some textures are writing in at the end of the show here. Please advise what maintenance is needed for a tankless water heater. Yes there is a descaling process that you need to do from time to time with your tankless water heater. And TRS heating and air conditioning can do that for you.

1:52:35And it's something that's advisable to prolong the life of the tankless water heater and ensure the proper temperature of its water flow. So yes descaling and you can learn more by googling that process. Do not believe it's easy enough to do yourself however so be aware of that. Let's see here great show this great state of New York charges a buck to get rid of paint just wait. They will charge for batteries soon to another fee. Another fee of course that's what we're known for here in New York state right. I'm not sure about that I don't think there's any fees to recycle batteries. But it's good to know that there is a process that is available to bring new life to old batteries and reuse those minerals. Again the home show is where we are and headed up to the Cortese booth for a bit. And then one o'clock Sandy Yon will be presenting on the main stage and then at two o'clock she'll be in our booth for a bit for meeting greet.
