It's HammerTam Radio's home improvement tip and a quick one today on a small project that keeps bathrooms healthy and prevents expensive repairs, ventilation, and mold prevention. Now, if your bathroom fogs up every shower and the paint peels as you see dark spots in the corners, well, guess what? That's a sign moisture is sticking around. First step, check your exhaust fan. Turn it on and hold a piece of tissue to the grill.

2:04It should pull the paper tight. If it doesn't, well, then that fan may be clogged, poorly wired, undersized, or just old. Most bathrooms need a fan, ready to at least 50 CFMs. Larger tubs or combined toilet shower rooms need 80 CFMs or more. Clean the grill and fan, cover by unsnaping and vacuuming, and wiping it down with a damp cloth. Build up reduces the airflow dramatically. For deeper maintenance, turn the power off at the breaker, remove the housing, and vacuum dust off the motor and the blades. If the motor's noisy, vibrating, or it doesn't spin freely, well, replace the fan. Modern fans are quieter and more efficient, and some include built-in timers or humidity sensors, so they run only as long as needed. If installing a new fan aims aimed the duct straight to the outside, don't vent into the attic, use rigid or semi-rigid metal ducting,

3:04and keep it as short as possible with a few bends as possible. Add a back draft damper at the exterior vent to stop cold winter air from sneaking back in. Short term fix is including wiping down the walls after showers using milder resistant paint and running the fan for at least 20 to 30 minutes post-shower. And if you see any mold, well scrub it with three to one water to bleach solution or a commercial mildew cleaner and fix the moisture source.
