Do Not Disturb Yourself - Daily Thought With Coach Daly - 9-1-26
About this episode
This is a classic post from Seneca the Younger (@SenecaQuote) where my connecting thought when I reposted it was this: Coach John Daly (@coachtosuccess) “Again, so much wisdom from so long ago that still helps us today…” I am amazed that from so long ago there have been clues left that humans still have trouble connecting with. The historic gem is from Marcus Aurelius - “ Do not disturb yourself by imagining your whole life at once.” Wow.. I know I need to see where I’m at and see what’s next and not try to have my entire future figured out. I think this is something all of us can do, connect with things that people have shared from the past that we can use today to make our lives better. Thanks for listening. Hello, good friends, Coach Chan here back again with you today, back on the right day, finally here on Tuesday. You're doing a thought coming out at you here on September 1st, 2026. Yeah, back on track here, finally getting caught up here, back on schedule. Love this historical connection with this post from Seneca, the younger. Again, check the show notes out so you can see the connection here. There's so much wisdom from so long ago, right, that can help us if we pay attention, right? And again, humans, this human has his hand up. Humans have trouble learning from history, from things that have happened already. And this Marcus Arelius is the one that this quote is attributed to. And I don't know Marcus personally obviously, but her name, right? Don't know exactly the time period he was alive. I could look it up, but I'm guessing. Thousand years, right? Thousand years, hundred years, not of this time, right?
And so what they went through, what humans went through, through Marx's time, they recorded a lot of things, a lot of thoughts, a lot of ideas, right? And this one makes sense. And again, I need to make better sense of historical connections to humanity, right? To being a human being. Marcus wrote, do not disturb yourself by imagining your whole life at once, right? Don't disturb yourself by trying to imagine your whole life at once. How about John, I'm speaking to myself, person of the mirror? How about thinking about where you are now? What's going on? Is it a good moment? Is it a stressful moment? What's going to, what choice do you need to make? What's happening? Will you gonna make that decision with, right? What have you learned throughout your life? What's next? And yet, do I want to look ahead at 10 years from now, right? Of hoping to be this and hoping to travel here and hoping to live there and love of course,
but I can't get, I can't disturb myself too much and thinking about that thing 10 years from now, when my two feet are right where I'm at now and I have this to do next, right? The things that I do next and then the next thing. And I need to try and probably focus a little bit better on one thing at a time because the 10 year thing from here, it's always out there, especially if I write it down, right? I need to write things down more. The writing is the doing part of thinking, okay? That's been said to me tons of times, right? Sam Crowley has mentioned that tons of times other people have to. Writing is the doing part of thinking, okay? Not just typing it, I heard this too recently, not just typing it in your notes on your phone, right? Or taking a snapshot, what they're finding is taking like a snapshot of say a recipe or something. Okay, I got it saved. You mine kind of figures out that, okay, you don't need to think about it or remember it because it's saved on your phone. And guess what, they're finding.
Most of the time you don't even think about going to check it on your phone, right? It gets lost with everything else, right? Do not disturb yourself by managing your whole life at once. Trying to cram in an entire lifetime of which? I don't know where my life is going to be. Five years, 10 years from now, let alone next week. I got some ideas, I got some appointments, I got some things in my calendar, right? But there could definitely be some curve balls tossed at me that I will need to deal with. Okay? So when Marcus really as mentioned to us about do not disturb yourself by managing your whole life at once, getting worked up and worried about it. About things that haven't happened yet. Getting worked up and worried about things that you want to make happen 20 years to know. What can you do about it today? And I got to remind myself of that, right? I got to remind myself, John, you're two feet away right here with you today. What can you do today that's going to benefit you tomorrow?
Let alone 10 years from now. Okay? And so this little historical thought for me got me thinking about being present a lot more, working on things that I have control over, right, right to here now. I know will benefit me later. And if there's something I do want to plan for 10 years from now, writing it down, the doing part of thinking, and then putting into action those things that are going to get me there. What can I do about today? Well, you know what? I'm going to meet with so-and-so two months from now. That's part of what I want to have happen in 10 years. Okay, good. I'll deal with it two weeks from now, two months from now, whatever it is. Then I meet with that person to deal with the thing I want 10 years from now. Okay? Not disturbing yourself by imagining your whole life at once. Okay? Learn from history. So many things have been talked about, thought about before. You're not the only one going through some of these things you're thinking about, right? There's other people out there that have gone through stuff. Connect with them, find out, read, listen, learn.
Maybe they might give you some hints about getting through what you got to get through, because I'm already done it. Okay? And Marcus really seems to be a good dude as far as some stuff that's been written and shared. To think about and kind of put into your equation of figuring out where you are now. Right? Senica, the younger. Okay? Love with historical stuff. Okay? All right, guys. I hope you are doing things that you need to get done. Hope you find some time to enjoy yourself too. Don't forget about that. That is necessary. And again, just remember, just keep taking care of yourself. Along with each other. You know the drill. We'll talk again soon. See you.
