I'm not giving away secrets here. I think it shows in the caliber and the depth of her work at training camp. If you think you've seen training camp coverage before, my friends, you are mistaken unless you have seen hers. Everything gets started really for you, I guess, tomorrow in heading up the Detroit.

2:02Yeah, the Penguins prospects will be going to Detroit. They're going to practice at 11.45 in cranberry and then head up. So I'll be there then drive it up and then camp opens the 17th. Probably, I mean, it's a shorter camp. Like normally, there's the time to, you know, you talk to a couple of the younger guys or, you know, the borderline guys. It seems like there's going to be a not as much time to do that. Yeah. Now, if anything, when you factor in, it can't, by the way, does the penguins announced this officially today start the 17th. So it's exactly a week from today. And our coverage will be, you'll see. From there, there are how many days from the 17th to the, it's not the 30th because the 30th is the day that they start playing in Philadelphia. So you're talking about a 10 or 11 day camp with

3:03at least a couple of days off in there. And then there are four games, preseason games. Now, they do have morning sessions and separate sessions for the other groups that aren't playing in the games that night. So it's not like camp goes on hiatus when there's a game. But you're still talking about nine, max 10 days of training camp. That's different. That is really different. Yeah. And if you look at the schedule, it's on the feed on the side of people up in Cena. They don't have written into the schedule, uh, scrimmages. That doesn't mean they won't do it. But typically in the past, you would have like group A versus group B scrimmage. They don't have any of that. And that's because they don't have that much time. But yeah, you'll see probably cuts happen much, much quicker. And there's less time for experimenting, less time to let, you know, do the rocks get into a preseason game in the past.

4:06Yeah, you might let your, your first start picks play. But if you only have four games, you don't really have a lot of time to be screwing around. No, uh, everything's got to happen. Like this. And by the way, the prospects, challenges, the tournaments, or whatever anybody calls them separately, those used to be kind of like the cherry on top. They're now must. You know, now as you're saying here, Taylor with the camp itself, the main camp being so short and so condensed, if you don't have this other tournament, you don't have anything. So it's, it's up, it's incumbent obviously on the players to be in the best possible condition coming in. You don't, this isn't the old and old and days, the 50s and the 60s when the athletes would use training camp to, you know, train, get themselves into condition. Uh, they have to come in at 100%.

5:07They have to come in just flying. And then from there, they have one practice tomorrow. That's up in cranberry. Off they go. And they're going to get measured. They're going to get gauged on these performances. A lot of it and it's serious stuff for management. Yeah, it's uh, and that's why a lot of, I think you see these captain skates and formal skates, summer skates, whatever you want to call them. They've been getting a lot bigger and they start a lot earlier. And then also, I mean, some guys just haven't gone home all summer. Ilya, so if you have spent here, like if you're talking about the main group, the whole whole summer after she all spent here, the whole summer, well, Tang's been in and out Carlson spent here a long time. He was one of the early guys here, but just about everyone's already in town. Hmm. Yeah, that is, that is different than the norm for sure. Um, some of the guys that are of either Russian origin or close to Russia origin,

6:10and they have a long way to go. And I understand that. That's, you know, and in in Sylovia's case, he's not exactly one back to a really happy place. Um, in in Belarus and yeah, it makes sense here. Jim wants to know who attends these games, meaning these ones that you're about to cover this weekend from management. You've done a few of them now. I mean, just about everybody, like the whole front office in the past, the coat, the full NHL coaching staff has been there. So it's, uh, I'd imagine much of the same. Um, pretty much anyone you can name from from hockey ops and even the NHL staff typically go to this. You have to see the scene in cranberry with the two patios uh, that that come out over the ice from the Kyle Dubas offices and so forth. Oh, there's been a lot of construction up there too. Uh-huh. But whenever Dubas has had his people, the hockey ops people that Taylor's talking about here, you just see this seemingly endless row of eyeballs.

7:15And that's what they are. To him, they are eyeballs with hockey brains behind them. And they're all watching. The same thing, but I'll, I've never asked anybody this, but I wonder if to what, to some extent, if they're told to watch different things or to watch different players to keep and I, there's obviously there's also film extensive filming of this going on. But there is something different about watching in the in the human way. And yeah, I mean, they're recording. They have cameras everywhere. Yeah, there's a massive difference still between recording anything and watching it with the human eye and what it is that you can hear, including how they skate and everything else here. You want, you want that human element to this still too. It's got to be in the teens, the number of people that he has. It's got to be in the teens. And I'm talking about main training camp now, not the, not the challenger, the tournament here. Butko says, what time do the informal skates go at cranberry?

8:16I'm not sure we want to give that out, right? Yeah, they don't, uh, pure doesn't even tell us like I don't like they don't, yeah, I don't think they want people going. Butko, you're a week away, my man. Just go in there. Yeah. Just, just, just go in it. I wouldn't want to say people will sometimes ask when we travel. What hotel are they in because I want to get an audio? I'm, whoa, we're not ever doing that. Yeah, that's, I mean, I wouldn't want them telling people what hotel I'm in and nobody would care what hotel I'm in. You know what I mean? I just don't want everybody to know everything. Yeah, I also, I mean, it's not even always like a set fit like I'm, when I'm going there, I'm guessing. And sometimes I show up and they don't skate because they don't, they don't even tell us. But, uh, yeah, I wouldn't just, you have a week. Brainstone says I still can't get over how they store the extra nets up in cranberry. I'm a rank manager. I've been to about 40 different ranks and I've never seen anything like it.

9:17And actually, as many times as I've been there, I have no idea what you're talking about. What do they do to store the nets differently than anybody else? Do you have any idea Taylor? I'd be more interested in a defense that can prevent goals than protect any individual player, whether it's Murashov or Arsor-Shi-Lavs, but are the penguins going to have a defense

12:22that's better at preventing goals in general? It's a fair question. Yeah, I don't know. But we've talked about this before. I think you would have said the same this time last year. Like wow, this defense is awful. Parker Wilders, Bumo, the 7th defenseman and then some guy surprised you. So, like, Declan Carlyle is not totally unlike what Parker Wilders Spoon was a year ago in terms of their careers to this point. So, I don't know, it's too early to say. Well, here's what I have on this subject, the moves that were made and most notably, that's Water Spoon, two Las Vegas, for Caden, Korsak, were made with defense in mind. They just were. They had to have been. You mentioned Carlyle. You look at the point totals between Korsak and Carlyle. They don't add up to much. And there's a reason they got to the NHL.

13:27They're both six foot three. They both play a somewhat physical style. I wouldn't, you know, all of the modern day Darius Casparitas or Othnielson. It's totally different. Oth Samuelson. But I would say that they were they were acquired with defense in mind. So, if your other defensemen on the left side are Sam Gerard, at least the version of it that we saw, and your other left defenseman is Trevor Van Rienstein. Okay. Are you better on the blue line than you were from a defensive perspective? It's actually a possibility. It's not out of the question that they'd be better defensively. I wouldn't lay my life down on it, but I think it's a possibility. Yeah. Jim Doran wants to know again, these these challenge games are going to be streamed.

14:29What's streaming service, penguins app? I think it's the red wings that are doing it, right? It's the penguins are going to have it on their website. I mean, I don't know. The penguins aren't sending broadcasters, so I don't know if the red wings are. So that'd be weird. Well, just looking back to what what's happened in Buffalo before, sometimes you'll get the opposing teams broadcast because some of my decent teams do send broadcasters, but sometimes it's just a silent stream. Although I say that and then you know, you have a network, the sports net Pittsburgh, that literally does nothing other than show penguins and pyres games against their only reason for existing. Why would you not just show everything? I know there's a cost factor to it, but up the value to the user, give the person who's, I mean, it's not my business. I don't care. And it's a boss and based thing on top of everything else, so I really don't care. It just feels like it's just dumb business, you know, give them something that you can't get

15:30anywhere else. Man. Mickey says DK shameless pandering comment aside, who I'm going to like this. Last year, you were one of the very few who was bullish on the penguins. What's your take for this year's team? Is it too unsettled to make an educated guess? No, the first off, the shameless pandering is going to always get you everywhere here. We're totally fine with that. Say nice things. You'll recall that my comment was made for my assessment of the penguins and their chances for making the playoffs was made after camp had started. And there's a reason for that is I was able to have some conversations up there with some people notably the general manager. And I had a really good feel for what it is that he was, he himself was trying to do. And when he mentioned what his expectations and his staff's expectations were for players like Anthony Mantha, who I wasn't even

16:30thinking about like I thought mantha was going to come in wearing this giant knee brace and you had no idea. You know what I remember that Taylor? He was just like a tri-out guy like you nobody was even, but they knew he was healthy. They knew he could score a bunch of goals. I don't think they thought he was going to plot 34 or whatever it ended up being, but it was still really, really impressive. So I'm I'm I'm panting right now on your question. I don't have a feel for this team. Do you Taylor? I think it probably similar caliber to last year, but you look at the rest of the East, the rest of the division got way better. So right now I would say not a playoff team, but it's it's way too early to say, but also you figured they'd make moves in season. So but yeah, they definitely have to get a whole lot better if they need to make playoffs. I hadn't thought of it really from from that prison, but if you think about the capitals and the moves that they made where they're like they can tell they're trying to do something with Alexander Ovechkin

17:34to finish on some kind of crescendo or whatever going out and getting Jordan Kairu getting Alex Tuck really paying a heavy price for both of those guys. The capitals missed the playoffs this past season not by much, but they did. Maybe they won't next season Florida Panthers missed the playoffs this past season. Oh my goodness, what a summer the Panthers had. Then again, you might also see some other teams take some steps backward. Ottawa senators. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, definitely. Cody says got to see how they look skating together in Pittsburgh sweaters to make any tangible statements. It's very interesting to see how Dan Mew's groups guys together could be very telling. I have a question for you on this one, Taylor. Is it goes back to the first two, three days of training camp last year? And I know you were all of those. Did you see Mew's basically walk into

18:34camp with an idea of what his in-season lines would be and then look at them in camp and then say, yep, that's it. That's what we're going to do. No, I mean, they had Ricardo Kels centering the third line in camp. That's right. For a while in in camp. And then then like they did not carve out a spot for Ben Kindle, Ben Kindle came into camp and showed that he deserves to be there. So they yeah, he was pretty flexible. So still though, I remember one of the lines that that was put together at the very beginning was the Gino and the big guys. Well, I mean, they played together in season. Yeah, I know. It's what I'm saying with man, the man, the unjust and brazo and that ended up sticking into the season. Yeah. We'll see. It's going to be interesting. How that goes. We'd be remiss if not mentioning at least in passing today that Amanda Kessel, who works for

19:42the Pangels, we've mentioned her once already on the program today and her somewhat lesser known brother Phil. We're both inducted into the US hockey hall of fame. Our name announced as they're going to be inducted into into that hall. Also part of that group will be PJ Oshi and Ryan Souter. Oshi who did the maybe one of the five most impressive things I've ever seen with my own eyes for a professional athlete too. That's when I was over in Russia and he was sticking it to Vladimir Putin up and down the ice on the shoe. That's it's so she. TJ Sochi as he was getting called in headlines at the time. Congratulations to all of them. Amanda Kessel's resume just real quick. One Olympic gold two U18 golds four world championship

20:44golds two Olympic silver three world championships silver. She won three titles in college. There's a bunch of there. She had quite quite the career. She had quite the career. She also had and I've told her this this in casual conversations since she's been working with the penguins. Maybe the most devastating upstairs like high level wrist shot of any American player in history. And I know there's others who scored more than her and I know Hillary Knight was the one who came in with all the skillsets and everything else here. And when you're talking about overall women's players, you're talking about Marie Philip, and then everybody else is kind of down here. But Amanda had this ridiculous finish with the wrist or upstairs that she would come in, especially if it was a breakaway, like a clean breakaway. Just forget it. Just forget it. I mean, it was it was buried and it was buried at a level that the gold tender's just not used to getting up to just a tremendous talent and an effortless skater on top of everything else here.

21:47RDM says problem with bringing Jake Gensel back is that the penguins have too many wingers. Who's bringing Jake back? Where did this come from? So no, that that's in all likelihood, which you would probably see is one of the top six wingers that the penguins currently have like a rekele, like a Brian Rost go in the other

22:52direction, although we've not heard anything to support that either. I start a couple questions. Penn Stog back to the prospect tournament. Ask what jerseys they wear for these games. The penguins do something interesting. Like you look back at like the Buffalo tournament. Every other team is just wearing their their regular season jerseys home home or away. The penguins go and practice for a season. I think that started under dubious and it's like you had to earn the right to wear the real jerseys. So I'd imagine they'll do the same thing like people have asked before. I think they couldn't get their real jerseys for this. That's a deliberate choice that they wear practice jerseys in this tournament. And then even by the time you make it to pre-season games, you are of course wearing real penguins jerseys. But even that is a right that is earned. Not everybody participates in those things. Yeah. You have to yeah, you've got to earn it.
