Did The Phillies Have A Good Offseason?

He's going to be in Syria with us at eight o'clock, a two-hour dive with our buddy Keith Jones today at eight o'clock from eight to 10. 2:01Well, I love weekends that have a lot of sports action. And this one did, you know, we'll ask you right out of the top. You know, what's set out to you the most this weekend? I mean, for me, it's a Sanchez deal, but there was a lot of aspects to it. I mean, the flyers are still in it. Sixers have a legit shot at the six seed. Rea still waiting for him. Bead. I just want to make sure I believe he's out for tonight. What is he up to game to 37? 17. I know. It's unbelievable. Yeah, I know. But a lot, a lot from the weekend to react to I do think the Sanchez news was the most significant. We'll get into that in more today at two one five five nine two nine four, he's their second ace in my opinion right now. Is the race for Lula is working his way back right now, Sanchez is the guy and he will be the guy after Zach Wheeler that is signed up for six years. Yeah. Now, the naysayer would say, well, he was already signed up for five years, which would be true. Look, I like it. I think it's, to me, it's twofold one, do right by the player.

3:02I mean, you don't want to totally Scotty Pippin, Pippin him. I mean, his deal was such a joke. Team friendly doesn't even begin. It does. So I do think there's something to be said for do right by the player. I think it's not only good for the players, they do exactly the, they bumped a money on the end. So at the end of the deal, he gets extra money. He otherwise would not have. Why does it feel so unspecific? The numbers that, you know, we're getting work is you've basically got to tack it on to what was an existing deal. It's, I mean, so it gets math he tried to figure out how much he's making. It gets math. I think it's like, we know what that number looks like, average per year, it's a hundred and seven. But that's so for six years, we'll think about this shot. If I told you in the all season, think of it, if he was a free agent, for six years, he would have gotten 250 million or 200 million. So, you know, like they, they do right by the player, but they also lock up their rotation for a long time as evidenced by the fact Zach Wheeler, who's got two years left, meaning this one and next year, he's the guy with the shortest contract left.

4:06So, let's get into it today at two one five five nine two ninety four ninety four. What stood out to you the most in the weekend, whether it's the tournament, the Sixers and Flyers winning games, Sanchez, whatever it might be, but also as we now project toward the season, your excitement level, my excitement level, I mean, three days to, I think, a really good baseball team, but let's also revisit the off season. This off season was underrated and under appreciate. Well, that's what I'm wondering, Jay, all of us. So, I'm wondering if people feel, and I know there's been new data, you got to Lizard a contract couple weeks ago, you got Sanchez now, I know, but building the off season, it's like we thought it was over, or at least I did, but it's not, of course, it keeps work. Exactly. I asked today at two one five five nine two ninety four ninety four, were people to down on Dombralsky's off season too early? Because, I mean, look, James gave it an F, which I told you at the time was a complete joke.

5:06I mean, I saw Barkley get traded for Andrew Lang. That's an F. Okay. That's an F. This wasn't an F. Even if they hadn't signed Lizard when Sanchez, it wasn't an F. Do I wish they did more? Yes. Namely one specific thing. I wish they had beta instead of Garcia. Now the besieft thing they obviously tried, he didn't say yes, they were close, they didn't want to, they did not want to not run it back for the wrong player. They'd rather run it back instead of run it back for Sam Smith at 200 million, like besiege cool, Sam Smith don't want him. I'm just making up a player, obviously, so they're like, well, then I'll run it back, which I'm good with because I thought they were really creative name. Well, yeah. 2155929494, was this Philly's All Season 2 maligned? Yeah. Yeah. I think so. We overreacted to the resigning of the familiar, you know, people are all the same, like why?

6:07Why is it always the same? Well, because Kyle Swarber is really amazingly good and JT is an indispensable part of this team and they're here and now and, you know, Luzardo is awesome. We retained the absolutely indispensable veterans that we could and we did not, we did other things that were uncredited, like the Dayton Browski did a great job building up the bullpen. We have four, at least four new arms in the bullpen. You go through, okay, Brad Keller, kind of. They might have given strom away, okay, but in return, we, we, we've added new names. We've added new arms. You got, I mean, I don't, I don't know these guys, back is in bowling. I know Zack Popwow people in the spring, Kirk Ring is out and banged up, but we know he'll be back by, by the time the, you know, eventually during the season. I like the fact that Jose Alvarado has a lot to redeem.

7:10I like the fact that Orion Kirk Ring, Kirk Ring feels like he has. A lot to redeem himself on. I think with Joann, the, the, the, Duran Chula at the top of it all, we, we cannot, I can't feel any better about the closing situation. Unless they would sign him long term, which is probably next. Okay. I mean, I would hope all in due time, but he is just the cherry on top. We fleshed out the rest of the bullpen this off season. According to those in the know, the, the guys have more clearly defined roles in the bullpen. You've added more talent and this is, uh, this is good. I don't, I, everything's good. That's a positive. I am glad that Castellanos is gone. I am one who thinks that that pays dividends this season. You know, the, the, the consternation, the problems that that creates when you've got someone who's not always in it for the team reasons.

8:12Yeah, we couldn't have him back. That's, yeah, that, that creates, but John, but this tension in the ranks, but then there's bone and that's a pride what he signifies as their fourth best hitter, who's not good enough to probably be a team's fourth best hitter. Like, to me, that's the heart of the negative is that I'm still looking at four, five, six. Yeah. I mean, how they rank, boom, stop, yeah, marsh, Rick, Rick, that's the problem, right? That's going to be a lot better. That's the issue. Wait. The boom, stop, marsh. Like, there's still so reliant on that. Yeah, but I mean, you guys are talking over here like they've had some kind of great off season. I think they've had a really good off season. They've had under, uh, most underwhelming off season, Lazaro, Lazaro locked up. Okay. Sanchez locked up. Okay. The reason the familiar makes it feel less exciting with guys who are a year older, who with an offense that has gotten worse each post season, the last three post season.

9:14Do you think they'd have been off season? Yeah. I think they had a really good off season. Absolutely no upgrades. Tom Browski had a terrible off season. Okay. Mr. No, I disagreed with that. Ruined any kind of value for Castiano Stram. All right. Ticked off Bryce Harper. Yeah. I mean, I'm sorry. You and I are viewing things. I know we are. It was a tactical ticking off of Bryce Harper. Probably. Yeah. Hey, I think it's paying dividends. I, I don't care what you say. I like the way he played in the WBC. I know I'm not supposed to give it much credence. I think, I think it's a great song until he was good. He once went. I mean, you know, he was hitting one whatever until once he still ends up hitting one whatever. Yeah. Biggest big homework. There wasn't a lot of offense. What a great pitching, I guess. Yeah. There wasn't a lot of offense. He had the off of all the guys who played. I mean, he's the guy's offense that you'd like to sign up for. All right. So I'm curious as we revisit now what's been, I don't know, five and a half months or whatever

10:18that it's been since they last played a real game because they're going to play a real game in three days. Break camp. Here's my team. You know, made a couple moves in the, in the weekend over the weekend. But when you assess the Phillies off season, good off season, bad off season, great off season, horrendous off season. Like how do you assess what it was and how do you assess how we the collective we're talking about it back in January? Because I will say people were as down on the Phillies off season and Dombraski specifically as anything I can remember in a long time. And I'm curious now a couple of weeks later, do you feel some folks who are a little quick to judge? I mean, look, they do sign Luzardo and Sanchez long term. That's humongous, in my opinion, humongous.
