Jones and Keefe — Despite all the noise, is there any movement on AJ Brown?. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
You know, when I address the news regarding my current situation, I understand that there are questions. But I take accountability for my actions and the actions that cause the distraction to the people that I care most about. My family, as a football team, the organization and our fans. My previous actions don't meet the standard that I hold myself to. They don't. And what I believe is best for the two most important things in my life. My family and my football team is for us to take the necessary steps to work together and to give them what I told them I'd give them, which is the best version of me. And that's what we're going to do. And that's going to start, that has started, that'll continue this weekend, and that'll continue for how other land it takes for me to give them and to complete that promise, of giving them the best version of me possible. And that's what's going to happen and that's what's been happening. That was Mike Vrable, last week, before the draft, as you know, Keith, I was at my own
counseling Friday. You sure were. Looks like you're a better man today. It does. I thought when I was on the road, and I saw the email from the Patriots that Mike Vrable was holding a press conference at 730, I thought there was a non-zero chance he was resigning. Well, I mean, I think anything was on the table. That's fair. It was announced like whatever, a half an hour before the draft that Vrable was going to talk. I'm like, why would they call this right before the draft? I'm like, there is a chance he is going to hit the podium because you already addressed it once. Hit the podium. Right. Resign, and I'm going to be out the next day. I was, I was, I was a little nervous about that if we're being honest. Let's count. We're turning this field trip around. Yeah. We're turning the car around. No one, no one was happier that he didn't resign than, than me. But it was wild. And that happened. And I guess it was just sort of an update because we had seen more photos come out since then. So it was like, all right, let's get in front of this one more time because the reason why he got out in front of it the day before was so it didn't completely hijack the end of night one of the draft. And then more stuff came out. Just like, all right, I got to do this.
And it was during Red Soxie Yankees and Bruins Savers. Yep. And then here comes Mike Vrable to the podium. Fairly well. Fairly well talked away. Yep. So anyway, there's that. A couple of updates quick. According to Phil Perry, NBC sports boss, and his understanding is Vrable is back in the office today. Oh. We get counseling Saturday Sunday counseling right back into the office. Hell yeah. This day three of the draft spoke about prioritizing family. And while also recognizing his responsibilities for the team last week, and then he cites the quote that we just played for you there. My priorities are with the family and this football team in that order. Vrable said, so that's one update from Phil Perry. This other one just came down as well. Adam Schaefter was on McAfee. Okay. With you wearing a baseball's boring shirt again. I know. McAfee. I don't know. Like a tasteful tight fitting black hoodie. Schaefter's in a tight. Yeah. He's kind of showing off the pecs and the traps. Yeah. He's going to work out a little bit. Uh, the Patriots want AJ Brown and the Eagles, uh, and are willing to, sorry, the Patriots
want AJ Brown and the Eagles are willing to move on from AJ Brown. It seems to be. Duh. Pointing in that direction. Eagles traded up with the division rival to draft a receiver. They've signed a bunch of receivers. The Patriots drafted no receipts. And they have the one they submit. Like they have like a loaded room right now. Good one. They're willing to move on from them. The Patriots are talking to it. Got it. I expect this trade will come together on June 1st. Not after. Oh, you have it. Nick. All right. Great. Let's hear from the man. This is Schaefter in the tight hoodie. The first neither side is committed to it. But both I believe are expected to make it happen to where AJ Brown will wind up being traded to New England in June though revisit. It's not going to be hard to get done. The Eagles are open to moving them. The Patriots want them. And I believe in the end, it will involve a future first round traffic. My guess is 2028. Okay. 28. But it's not an under the table handshake agreement. I just guess. Yeah, you just guess. He's a wild 20. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So that's a hypothesis. So now it wasn't a 2026 first rounder.
It's not a 2027 first round. It's 2028 first rounder. 2029. Fine. 30. Look, I'll be kicking it down the road. Look, I'm in for whatever it takes. Would you rather trade a first round pick for AJ Brown? Me too. The 2027 second rounder. The bill comes do a little quicker. It's second rounder or 2028 first. I guess a second than a first. I think I'd rather kick it down to 2028. Isn't this first better than a second? It is. But don't you want to wait till that bill comes do a little bit? Yeah, I guess you could say that. And if everybody thinks the 2027 draft is the greatest thing ever, maybe keep all your picks in 27, right? Well, honestly, maybe that's an acknowledgement that Eagles think AJ Brown, even though everybody's allegedly worried about his knees. Maybe the Eagles are like, well, he's got another good year in him. They're going to be too good in 2026 for the 2027 draft. So let's kick it down even further because that gives us some wiggle room against it. If you believe the hype about the 2027 draft class, right, there was a lot of talk about it over the weekend about how teams were reluctant to trade future picks because of how good the class is. Patriots wouldn't do it. Or anybody. Maybe the Eagles are like, all right, we still want a first.
But if we're not going to get a first in this year's draft, we're not going to settle for a second. And in their mind, they're like, we'll take a first and whatever, whatever, yeah, whatever you can give us. I would do that in a second and that would make this a great off season. Well, and does that also explain why they waited beyond just the cap ramifications, quote, unquote. Yeah. But how far out can you trade picks in the NFL isn't only two or three years, three years because the Browns wanted to get it. So I guess I guess they still could have no exactly. I was just going to bring that up. The Browns. That was one of their proposals that got shot down, but they wanted to move it to five years out trading picks. Also, it felt like the Rams always did that, but I guess they were doing it closer each year at a time. Yeah, I suppose. So anyway, that's the latest from Shepard. Yeah. Well, that's there's conflicting reports on that now, 2028 first round picks. Shepard's hearing. Yeah. I'm sorry. His guess, not hearing. His guess. I want to get his words right. Well, good news. June 1st is a Monday. So we should be here. Hopefully it gets done right in the middle of our show. Yeah. We can talk about that. No, no, no. You should have stopped it. Jones and counseling. We will be here dot, dot, dot, hopefully. I agree. Hopefully.
Hopefully. Uh, give us until then. But yeah. Hopefully the label's working that day. label needs to clear with his counselor. He's like, I need to be available on June 1st and 2nd. There might be something happening. So, OK, 2028 first rounder for AJ Brown. How do you feel about that? 617, 779, 7937. Rabel's back in the building. Nice. He wasn't there Saturday. So good line on the text. Of course, Rabel's in the office. That's where he lives now. Yeah, maybe that's a sign. Counseling did not go well. Yeah. Rabel has moved back in. I now live here, guys. Good to pillow to blanket. And he's back in his office. Who do you think ran the draft this? I don't mean Saturday, because I know Rabel wasn't there Saturday. Oh, I think the wolf packed it. I think it was an LA wolf draft. And that, but that's a, that's a shift. Because yeah, a year ago, we all believe Rabel was running it. I don't think he ran this one. And I'm not alone. No. But Darden, GRD, we're talking about this over the weekend. You know, GRD made a, I thought he made a really good point about how last year we saw Rabel at all these pro days working guys out. He had the, the, the pad. And you know, he's, he's, he wants to quote unquote,
feel Will Campbell's power. Well, he did work a couple guys out. Let's go around. Well, he worked out the one guy at Arizona State. He was awfully, he really wanted to go on that trip to take our, gotta go to Arizona State. He really wanted to go to Arizona for whatever reason. Yeah. He really wanted to go to that specific pro day right down the road from Sedona, like what are you doing? But he didn't go to a lot of pro days this year. And GRD even said when he was on the podcast with Bedard, he even said, well, yeah, last year, he was working out with all these guys in this year. Elliott wolf said after they picked Lomo on Thursday night, Vrable's still got a, you know, kind of understand him and learn him. And he wasn't there at the pro day. And that was a sign of detachment. So there could be a reason for this, right? A year ago, Vrable got here. They were a bad team with high draft picks and no playoff run. This year, they had a long playoff run. So maybe Vrable just felt like he had more time last off season to be more involved in the draft. Maybe, maybe, yeah. Or maybe they really punished Vrable for what's going on. And they're like, look, Mike, Elliott's going to run the, you got enough going on? Why don't you sort, sort all your crap out and then Elliott's going to run the draft
this weekend. You could be there on Thursday. Yeah. We're going to make a big song and dance. You can get on the phone with Lomo, same thing with Akis and the day two picks. You'll be there. We'll put you prominently in our social media videos and we're going to let everybody know you're still a big part of it. But Elliott's going to run the draft. And I think, I think this is a wolf pack, a wolf pack draft is what I think it was. That's my guess. Now obviously he was there the first two nights where they made three picks and I will see where Lomo goes. I don't know about that. But the other two picks, I thought were really, really good. And so you like the tight end as well. I'll take it. Yeah. I like that they took someone at that spot. So I don't know if I like him specifically. I like stowards. No, but I like it. At least that they address that need. He is a hot boss. Bad knees on that. All right. I mean, I'm just going to have a whole team of bad knees. Show me a horse of the good knees. I think most horses kind of par for the course is bad knees. Good point. Good point. Can you be a horse and have good knees? Maybe not. Good point. They're just a ticking time bomb in there. Good point. So as long as they're still attached, I'll take it for that guy.
But yeah, I think the rest of it is funny because they traded up a couple of times. And so by doing that, you also traded out of the fourth round. And so you had a lot of picks on day three when Vabel was absent. But you only had one fifth, two sixth, and then three sevenths. And so could you have talked about ahead of time which developmental quarterback you want and they went and got the kid from Texas Tech. Could you ask about one other backup lineman or running back? So I'm sure they went over that. But yeah, there's just no way to say he was as committed to this year's draft, but as it invested for all the different reasons being in the Super Bowl, being distracted, being away all of it as compared to a year ago where we're still hyping that up as a great draft. Right. Now, maybe it's a little overstated. Like we were talking about the playoff run. But I felt better about it going into the playoffs coming out of the playoffs for sure. You still got a lot of contributors. You got a lot of starters and it looks like at least guys are going to stick around on the team where there had been a handful of drafts prior to that where there's nobody left.
So already I would say a good draft, but you want them to be able to follow that up with another one. Like with all teams drafts very much TBD, but to think that he wasn't as a part of this one as that one. I don't think he can spin it that way. It doesn't feel that way. And again, people who cover the team seem to sense that as well. So not only was Rabel absent Saturday and despite what Peter Schrader tried to tell he's there, he's totally there. I don't really think he was calling the shots at all this weekend, which if we like Rabel's draft a year ago and we all hated Wolfs draft two years ago, that probably doesn't bode well for this draft. And yet, I think I like the Lomu pick more than you keep because I think something's up on the old line. And what does that mean? Does that mean he's going to left tackle and Campbell's kicking inside the guard maybe? Does that mean that he's going to be the right tackle? At some point because Morgan Moses can't make it through the year and we're not really even sure on what Morgan Moses is immediate future is on the team. Maybe is there something that rid of Moses cheap next year too? Well, there's that is one point seven, but I'm talking about this year because I'm with
Rich on this. If they drafted a kid, if they traded up for a kid at 28 to just red shirt the year effectively and be a swing tackle, I'm not happy with that. But I, I think there's more to the plan on when he would, by the way, wasn't there the other day for the all season program? So like, what's that about? Is on when he was skipping out? Is he going to be long for the team? Could Lomu factor in a guard or could Campbell kick inside to go like something I think is going on with the old line? I'm just not sure what, but I think Lomu is going to be one of the five if you're asking me to handicap it today. So I think I like that pick more than you do, but if he's not, if he's not, I don't like him that he's not any basically red shirts the season. And I don't think you're the Patriots, even though you're just in the Super Bowl. I don't think you're the, hey, let's draft Nate Solder and sort of see what happens. Kind of situation. There are other needs. The fact that they got a pass rusher who might start right away in the second round, that makes me like the Lomu pick a little bit more. So it's Friday morning talking about it. I felt a little bit worse than I do today. Now that you know, they got a guess at wherever they trade it up to, I feel better. You feel a little better about not getting an edge player. But my fear is, if you, if you believe their words following the season, both Raible and
even Elliott Wolf, after they drafted Lomu, if they're really keeping Will Campbell there, and if Morgan Moses is good again, then your first run pick doesn't play all season, which that I don't really like. I mean, if he, maybe he plays as like a spot starter or he plays as like a third tackle on like a jumbo package, but I don't really love that. So look, if he doesn't play, I don't love it either, but I like the, I like the Lomu pick. I like the Ackas pick. I'm not as high on the Rared on pick who cares about the day three picks. I mean, Raible should care. He should have been there. And I think this is all nonsense that he wasn't. I don't think Keith something came up. Well, Wolf's explanation, we played it earlier. We don't need to play it again, but Wolf is like, well, we talked about it. And we're like, that's neat. He was weird. And look, you're right. They traded two fourths. Maybe they just said, Mike, take the day. My guess is this was all a PR stunt from the jump. And that doesn't mean that Raible isn't going into counseling with his wife. He probably is, but he had to go in on Saturday and he had to miss the draft on Saturday. No. He had to go on or a soft benching, a suspension, which is what Floreo was talking about.
We were here on Thursday, something like that. And then they called it off because they're like, everyone sniffed it out. It looks, it looks so stupid. And everybody said it was stupid. There's now no point in doing it. So Raible don't even bother being there or being in touch rather and pretending that you're running things. Just be out of sight. Out of mind. Don't even bother with it. I think that's what happened because I think from the beginning, the Patriots were running that. The whole time they haven't been able to read the room. They don't know what the reaction to, which is insane. But that's why I think it's the Patriots because the Saturday thing never made sense. And the way they've handled the whole thing has never made sense, which is why I still think that was the Patriots. I just think pretty much it ever turned. They've made it a bigger story or whether it's a bigger story or just as like breed life into it the entire time because you go back to Raible's initial statement. Dom, that was dumb to say what you said. He's then had to speak about it twice prior to the draft taking place. He's had to make two separate press conferences about it. And he, by the way, I said this one Friday when you weren't in, but Shymus here is, this
is a guy that always sounded really confident, kind of cocky, also sarcastic. He had like a good sense of humor. And I know this is a different circumstance, but these last two, he does seem shooketh. And he wonder how he's going to be able to recover and bounce back from that. But anyway, put that to the side. The way this whole thing is gone, then they're like, all right, he always, he's not going to say he did anything wrong, but he clearly did something wrong because he now what needs to go to counseling. So that'll be good. That people will like that. We're taking this seriously. But now, oh, wait a minute, he's missing football stuff. So we'll say that he's a, we'll say he's around for it. But then people will like that. No, they won't like that because now it feels like you're not even taking the counseling seriously. So then we had to flip that. And even all the sources couldn't even get their story straight because even on Saturday we got conflicting reports about it too. It's true. I don't know what the next thing is going to be, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's tomorrow or the next day. Well, meanwhile, we don't need to play the public authority thing again. But apparently the whole league knew about these two. Glazer had his pool party with all the coaches across the league at minus four, 28 of them
were there for Glazer. And meanwhile, Vrable is at Roussini's rival pool party. Doesn't sound much of a party. And the whole league, all the coaches, all their wives are gossiping about Vrable and Roussini's friendship. So like the whole league knew, which means the Patriots probably knew, which I think actually in a roundabout way while that's embarrassing for Vrable and it's all coming out publicly and it's a huge national story and it continues to explode. I think it's actually good for Vrable if the Patriots were aware of it. I don't know what it says about the Patriots, but I think it's good for Vrable that the Patriots were aware of it if they were because the worst thing for Vrable and his future with the team. And again, Phil reporting that he's back at the facility today. The worst thing for Vrable would be lying to the crafts, they're flat-footed, they have no idea, and all of a sudden this massive story balloons out of nowhere and they're caught flat-footed. I don't think anybody who's flat-footed on this, the whole league knew, you know, Roussini's throwing a rival pool party, standing there in a bikini or whatever with Vrable.
While all the other coaches in the league are standing across the pool, gossiping about the two of them. Which pool party would you go to, Jay Glazer, one of the Dianne, Roussini, one? I'd probably go to the Glazer one, even knowing what you know now. Yeah. I think so. I think you know. Look, I'm a Glazer's like a bodybuilder, kind of guy. Yeah, it's probably just pro-teacher, you have C kind of guy. That's me. That's my speed. Yeah, you know me. I like, you know, I take good care of myself. I like to. Yeah, I like. I'm sick, Greg, bro. I'm like Fergie. I'm up in the gym working on my fitness. I've never seen anyone. I'm having a protein shake. Sounds like. Hot tub. They're like a dive bar vibe to it. I'm way more there. Casino. Casino. They're drinking cheap drinks. I'm in on that. You know what? You swayed me. Yeah. You're just doing push-ups to fatigue over at Glazers. I'm out. It's like three, by the way. Push-ups to fatigue. Push-ups to fatigue. I was like, I would beat, I wouldn't even beat my big Daniel. He's not a head coach anymore though. Wasn't there? No, he's not. No, he's not. All right. Oh, see. Seven, nine, seven, ninety-three, seven.
That is all the latest there here on Jones. And Keith, stay tuned. You got a new afternoon show, Rich and Ken with Ted Johnson. It starts at two o'clock, right? I heard the crossover with Greg Keeve. I was mildly intrigued, very much intrigued, that, well, Rich said he's not afraid to settle some scores there. And he doesn't want someone else telling his story. Okay. I don't know. I don't know if that's a today thing. Well, yeah. I don't know if it's a today. There's a lot of news going on. So I don't know if it's a today thing. It's a busy day. But I would, I would be locked in at two. I agree. Uh, for again, Rich and Ken with Ted Johnson. It starts today on WEEI and on the Odyssey app. We'll get you the clip to Jor. Yeah. Right after trending with Billy Lanny. It's time for Grab Back. Do you believe in bag of the crap? Every week day at one time, a little walk to show two and more.
