About this episode
Investigative journalist James O’Keefe has uncovered a major scandal in California: paid petitioners paying homeless people on Skid Row to forge signatures of registered voters. Steve breaks down how this explosive video — along with a wave of fraud exposés from Nick Shirley, CAL DOGE, and others — could end California’s corrupt Democrat machine once and for all. Then, Susan Shelley joins the show to respond to Tom Steyer’s dishonest comments about the “Save Prop 13” initiative. She also breaks down how the California bullet train is coming for your property taxes, the latest of his wife’s pet projects Gavin Newsom is boosting, and a little-known labor union law that could swing the governor’s race. Finally, California financial influencer Ramin Ekhtiar stops by to discuss the state’s soaring energy bills, a proposed increase to property transfer taxes and Matt Mahan’s record as mayor of San Jose.

The Steve Hilton Show — Democrats Paying Homeless for Election Fraud?!. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
How is it possible that we pay the highest taxes in the country and get the worst results? Well here is part of the answer. You see the money being spent literally the cash being handed out to get people to register as fake voters, fake signatures for ballot initiatives? This is it! This is their business model. This complete control that they've had is crumbling before our eyes and the real force that's doing that is the revelations of all of this fraud and corruption. Hey everyone, welcome to the Steve Hilton Show. We've got some great conversations coming up. Susan Shelley here with the latest insanity on high-speed rail at Never Ends. The building of it never begins. But the scandal and the scam never ends. New information there you'll want to hear. And we've got a guest, Ramine XTR who's just making really big waves on social media with his skewering of Democrat, particularly
economic policy here in California. But I want to start with a friend of mine who's been doing some incredible work that you've seen exposing the corruption of the regime and the system here in California. And that is James O'Keefe. So I saw James this past weekend. He's been here in California. You've seen I think his videos which have really shaken things up in our politics here in California. The incredible corruption of the system in terms of voter registration, buying people's signatures for ballot initiatives, buying voter registration completely extraordinary what's going on. But I wanted to make a broad point about this before we get into some of the details that James has focused on. If you look at what's going on with California now and in California, it's something very, very interesting. Because of the size of our state and the impact that it has on the rest of the country, you've now got national attention
on all the things that we've been talking about for years. Because you've got people like James O'Keefe, like Nick Shirley and the Federal Administration as well, the Federal Government, you've got Dr. Oz, for example, coming to California to expose the fraud and the corruption. And it's just building. The volume of that is building. You saw a CBS news report last week on the hospices that made big, big headlines. You've got the Manhattan Institute setting up a bureau in California to expose corruption. You've got JD Vance, of course, leading the effort at the president's direction. So all of this is going on and there's going to be more of it. Because as we know, as we've been exposing through Cal Doge, that's been our contribution to it. Benny Johnson has come here to document what's been going on and we worked with him on some of that. So you've got so much energy now focused on exposing the fraud and the corruption of the system here in California. I think it's got to the point where it's actually going to make
a real difference in our elections here in California. The volume of this is so high and people are so infuriated by it because we have this central question here in California, which is how is it possible that we pay the highest taxes in the country and get the worst results? Well, here is part of the answer that they've been skimming off all this money and siphoning off into nonprofits that register voters and all of this, instead of our money going to the purposes for which it was intended. Of course, you've got Bill Asale, the US attorney, really aggressively pursuing it from a criminal point of view, where you saw that with the homeless of money and the arrests that were made there in that context in LA a few weeks ago. So there's just this incredible focus on California and what's going on here. And I think it is contributing to a sense that this regime in California is 16 years of one party rule where Democrats have controlled everything. All the statewide offices,
the legislature with the 2,000 majority, all the big cities, all the big counties, the bureaucracy, the judicial branch, the Supreme Court, the California State Supreme Court, the judges, this complete control that they've had, it's crumbling, it's crumbling before our eyes and the real force that's doing that actually is the exposure, the revelations of all of this fraud and corruption. That's what's doing it. And it feels to me like the volume is going to increase as we move through the year because there's so much of it. And so there's just plenty for everyone to get their teeth into. All of these stories that we're seeing put out there by these various groups, including our own, including Caldoge, including James O'Keefe and his organization, including Nick Shirley, etc. They're all different to each other. It's the same story, but they're different illustrations of it. And there's plenty more where that came from.
We're just for our part like Caldoge. We have over 800 active tips that have come in that are really strong specific tips on fraud that we need to look into. Of course, at this point, when it's a campaign and we're not going to have the resources to do that, but we're doing our best and we're publishing our fraud reports as we go along. So look, there's just something's happening. Let me put it that way. Something's happening in California and I think it's going to get bigger and I think it's going to make a big contribution to why we win in November. Now let's talk about James O'Keefe. So I sat down with him over the weekend and you can see some of that conversation right now. The petitioners are giving names of currently registered California voters who are very much alive and they're giving the names to the homeless and giving them cash to vote in their names. So this is going to be released soon and I want to get your live reaction. We're going to watch this year. Yeah, but I want to know what I'm signing first. I'm just too big.
I'm not that registered. Okay. Yeah, I understand. I got you. I'm Joseph Albright. Okay. Joseph. So he's taking a piece of paper with voters on it and they're giving the voters to the people. All right. The street. What is the street? This is our to to 75 really terrible trail and Belmont. Okay. That's near Riverside. So they're giving three dollars cash to to do this. So you've got a real person. It's identity theft in the street. Yes. So then what happens to that identity and then they vote in the California ballots using the other person's name because it's easier than having the homeless have an address because many of them don't have addresses. So they're voting in terms of signature for the ballot initiative. Correct. I mean it's just unbelievable. So you've got someone who's being paid looking up a real
person on the voter who's registered to vote and telling this other person paying them to just use their name just it's basically identity theft. It's all them incredible that this has been going on and it's been going on for years and no one's looked into it and the interesting thing about what James O'Keefe is doing is it's kind of tying a lot of these strands together because a couple of the fraud reports that we've done at Cal Doge and certainly one of the ones that Benny Johnson looked into when we were together was about the siphoning off of money that was intended for other purposes where that's homelessness in one case or cannabis tax was our first report climate money that was our second money that was supposed to go on solar panels for low-income apartment buildings siphoned off into democrat front organizations that do political activity including voter registration. So we've told that story before and you kind of stop at the point where you say something like they spent the money on voter registration and that's where
James picks it up and you see the money being spent literally handed out the cash being handed out to get people to register as fake voters fake signatures for ballot initiatives all completely shameless and brazen this is it this is their business model in California which is that they take public money and they put it into partisan political purposes or hand it to their cronies and donors in order to reward them so they get more money. I mean it's just and and and they do not care about what the results are in terms of policy outcomes in the real world for real people because it's all about keeping them in power and building their machine and entrenching their political power so they can continue to push the griff continue to reward their donors and cronies continue to keep themselves in power through whatever means and by the way these are the people that endlessly lecture us about our democracy how much they care about all of that what a joke
this is being exposed the fraud and the failure and the corruption on a massive scale and I think it's going to be a really big part of why we kick them out this November. Susan some great stories coming up with you today just getting into the details as always to expose the absolute misrule that we have in California. I want to start though with the governor's race obviously I'm in that one of my opponents actually there's 80 million dollars that he's spent making it now they're officially the most expensive campaign this election season in the whole country Tom Steyer the billionaire climate fanatic running for governor has weighed in on something that you and I have talked about and is very very important for so many of us in California prop 13 we we had some really good news on that which is that your ballot initiative when I say your you're part of how Jarvis Taxpayers Association as well as all the other things
that you do of course I was a massive supporter of all of that is now on the ballot for November save prop 13 that's fantastic news but Tom Steyer is going in the opposite direction what's he up to? Well he's calling it a scam he's calling this constitutional amendment that was passed by voters 64 points something percent of voters in 1978 he's calling it a scam and trying to reverse part of prop 13 he wants to reassess commercial property all business properties large and small to full market value every year he wants to destroy prop 13's protection split it in half and say well we're only going to protect residential property we're not going to protect commercial property because it's a scam it's not a scam the voters said twice that this is how they wanted it to be this is what role isn't this split role yes the idea that you could divide the it's always been unitary it's always been one set of rules for all property in California from
the beginning and now he's the this would be at least the third try at convincing the voters they were wrong and we should reassess commercial property but obviously if you reassess commercial property to market value every year that doesn't create the revenue to pay those higher taxes on the market value so it's going to drive some businesses out of the state some businesses into the ground and it will certainly raise prices and rents to people in California so that's a big problem and he has decided that he's going to base his campaign on this it's he puts it on his social media account that it's a scam and he's also talking about something that is not in prop 13 which is the definition of change of ownership and that's a way that some commercial entities some corporations LLCs and partnerships have manipulated the change of ownership rules which are in state law not in prop 13 the change of ownership rules to avoid reassessment that can be changed senator Pat Bates who is now on the board of Howard Jarvis former senator retired
she proposed it several times to fix this definition to avoid this loophole but the democrats have not wanted to do it because they like to tie that together with prop 13 to make it look like commercial property is not assessed fairly so that's that's two separate issues that he's merging together and he's calling it you'll love this the Trump tax loophole it's not a loophole it has nothing to do with Trump it's prop 13 the basic protection is in the constitution and the definition of change of ownership is in state law and the legislature can change it whenever they choose to so what it why I've seen these ads he's going about the what is the even the justification for calling it the Trump tax loophole he owns commercial property in California that's it so he benefits he benefits from prop 13 as everyone every property owner benefits from prop 13 because what is the point of reassessing property to market value in California and taxing everybody out of it what's the point of that is that is he proposing any exemption for small business not that I'm aware of
perhaps that's in his plan but I haven't seen it well if he isn't then this is a massive tax increase on every small business in California isn't it that's correct and and what's the definition of a small business you know I just it would be very very difficult for the assessors to determine the size of a business how would you do that you'd need the franchise tax board involved it would be a whole new way of taxing it would it's not really practical I only put it that way because he's framing it so in your billionaires getting away with this loophole we're going to fix it well the the counter-argument is your plan would crush small it's nothing to a billion of course all businesses would be affected unless there is a carve out will check but if there isn't then it would particularly particularly hurt small business it absolutely would it would hurt small businesses perhaps small landlords it would hurt everybody and it would raise prices there's no way around that if you raise taxes it raises prices businesses don't really pay taxes consumers pay taxes or workers in terms of either lower wages or a few jobs a few jobs exactly so this was
rejected when that when was the last ballot it was rejected in 2020 it was proposition 15 on the November 2020 ballot and it was defeated even though there was quite a favorable electorate in 2020 if you want to get into the wonkiness of politics they had about the best electorate they were going to have for something that was going to raise taxes and it still failed and it also failed in 1978 head to head with prop 13 because prop 13 got on the ballot as an initiative with signatures and then the legislature to try to take the wind out of its sales proposed another constitutional amendment that would have allowed a split role and that was flat out defeated that was prop 8 in 1978 and it was flat out defeated so voters have turned this down twice they do understand the connection between raising taxes and raising prices all right uh next up uh it's the gift that keeps on well I actually know him going to do the gift that keeps on giving how about that I need rail what's the latest high speed rail in its business plan is counting on
an infrastructure district to give it more revenue now what does that mean that means it wants some of the property tax revenue and the sales tax revenue that currently goes to local governments and what's the reason that they want this well if we build a station we're bringing business in and we should get the increment of that extra tax money the value of that in this whole area around the station well this would include downtown Fresno and the mayor of Fresno is not amused this is currently a study bill it's SB 545 and that would cause the legislature to order a study on the economic opportunities and the funding opportunities that would allow a creation of an infrastructure district which is kind of like the redevelopment districts used to be they they take an increment of the property tax revenue and an increment of the sales tax revenue and they say well we caused this increase so it's ours and then the money would go to high speed rail to help build Merced to Bakersfield because they don't have enough money to finish Merced to Bakersfield
and that is a big problem the law currently requires them to finish Merced to Bakersfield and they're making all these other plans at high speed rail and they're going to need legislative changes to authorize any of it because they're currently required by a 2022 law I think it is to finish something to finish Merced to Bakersfield with a station that's in downtown Merced which they're already waffling on and say well maybe just on the outskirts and that's not legal either so according to the inspector general they do need legislative changes if they're going to do that it's it's it's just incredible what was this did you just find this in the business part or was this this bill is a new proposal recently well had tip to had had tip to John Kupal president of the Howard Jarvis taxpayers association who highlighted this in his column this week that SB 545 was introduced and passed the Senate last year but now it's in the assembly and it could move and it would allow some of this to go forward where this is turning up is in the
high speed rail business plan the draft business plan that they recently released where they're counting on this money and it's just not clear at all that they can have this money but they just are scrounging so they need the money to do the construction but this is future revenue that they're projecting that they're going to take from the budgets of these cities now they're going to take it from the property tax revenue and the sales tax revenue for a district around where the stations will be built and they're going to use that money flow the projection of that money flow to borrow against for today it I mean how does this fit with finding money to build it well that's a good question I don't think they can borrow against it because it's an uncertain it's an uncertain amount this is the same problem they have with trying to borrow against the money that's from cap and invest previously cap and trade supposedly that's going to bring in a billion a year but it might not so it's difficult to borrow against
it in the bond market where people want a little more certainty or they're going to charge you a lot of interest because you're a junk bond so that's the issue they face is how do they monetize something that may never be built and this is one of the reasons they can't get private investors because it never used another good point yes never used how many people really need high speed high speed rail farmers said the bakers failed exactly yes he's really crying out for that I'm in there in the central valley the whole time most people want to get rid of it what about the infrastructure district as a tax raising and thing in our system that's this is the first time I've really focused on that so is the concept of an infrastructure district an old one and they're applying it to this was it just created for this I think it's an old concept I think it exists around in different places if you're building something that's actually going to be built and functional maybe there's a good reason to do it but city governments kind of object to that
because it's taking money away from them and it's giving it to this entity to build something and is the infrastructure district like wherever they want they draw a special map or does it do you just designate an existing area of Fresno County is now an infrastructure district it's a it would be if they would draw a map around the proposed station wherever the station is going to be and they would say this is where any any businesses or property within this district the money is ours it's just full of scams isn't it California they have so many tricks that they can use to extract money from us for their bottomless money pits it's amazing it is amazing and high speed rail has so far spent 14 billion dollars since 2008 and this is a crazy amount of money that has been spent on some construction but no completion and a lot of environmental studies and studies of things that they're never going to be able to have the money to do and salaries so it's it's quite the honey pot for people who can get in on it but
it's not serving the people of California very well so 14 billion is the actual spending so far is not higher than the whole thing was supposed to have cost possibly i don't remember the exact figure but it was supposed to be done by 2020 and now they are on track to not meet their schedule of 2033 just for Merced to Bakersfield it was supposed to be San Francisco to Los Angeles by 2020 and it's not even going to be Merced to Bakersfield by 2033 i mean it should go back on the ballot and the voters should be asked if they still want to do this because it's not the deal they signed talking of spending money he's i mean it's not the same kind of scale but it's just as offensive in a way you spotted something that we're now all going to be paying for to do with what is it gender something something with Gavin Newsom's first partner as we are instructed to call her yes the first partner has something to do with the governor signing an executive order
last week and what he signed would order a study from gobiz which is his business and economic agency in his administration a study on recommendations of how to mobilize private capital toward values aligned investments what is this about well this is an honor of women's history month and the premises that women continue to face systemic barriers like it's 1950 and women can't get a mortgage in their own name this is this is kind of patronizing in my opinion i wasn't really impressed with you know the idea that women need the governor's help in order to function in our society i thought that was odd but the idea is to make women equal architects not bystanders of California's economic future is that not patronizing i thought it was and in 2025 the first partner launched the California women's wealth advisory council now we get to it this is going to try to make recommendations and publicize certain things that can be funded by private
capital and philanthropy and to give it sounds to me like one more channel for influence do you feel some bested payments coming on it certainly seems like it's in the same family that if you want to please the governor if you need your bill signed this is one more way you can do it you can direct some private capital to wherever the first partner has determined it will help empower women and honestly i i think it's not a fitting tribute to women's history month to try to see women don't have equal access in the what did she call it the financial and investment ecosystem really where is this barrier because if there's a barrier it's probably not legal if there's actual discrimination it's probably not legal so what's what is this barrier that she wants to overcome with a study the whole thing feels like it's from a different age you know where they will sort of throw money around and all these sort of you know DEI sounding things but
especially in the last you know six months or so with this incredible focus um we're on fraud and waste and abuse particularly in California the work that we're doing with Caldozia Nick Shirley so many people are now uncovering so much money of ours being completely you know frittered away stolen whatever and then to just keep adding things like this in that climate is just so out of touch it seems to me and the tell in my opinion is that when someone comes to them and says we've uncovered this evidence of fraud is the response we'll get right on it no the response is how dare you and insults to the people who are who are investigating that's that's that's a tell no way no way no way is that what an innocent person would say so how much money is proposed for this architect women off what's whatever they calling it well i don't think there's any money attached to it directly from the government what they want
is to mobilize private capital and philanthropy so that's that's the channel for influence peddling you know they want to they want to say if you make it this is very similar to the behested payments if you make a donation to this wonderful entity the governor will certainly appreciate it and that's a behested payment okay now talking of influence peddling the biggest of all in California the unions which you know the the democrat politicians are basically the puppets of the unions they bribe these politicians and they get favors in exchange and you and there's a there's an interesting angle to this that it's a very important thing for us to know about this particularly as we really gear up into the election phase this year absolutely well in the in the democratic side of the primary where there are eight candidates and none of them will get out this is a war for union support typically union support gets on board very early with
one candidate and that's they're so powerful in California that's the end of the contest but here it's very split and because it's split there's an interesting campaign finance law that could come into play in a closed election and it's what's called member communications if a union chooses to endorse a candidate they are then allowed to do member communications which means they can spend money out of their general treasury the money that comes in from dues they can spend that money on telling their members which candidate they endorsed and they can do this with male with phone banking with meetings with email with texting they can spend money campaign style to their members and it's not a campaign contribution it doesn't have to be reported as campaign spending it's not limited as campaign spending is it's in addition to whatever they do with their political action committee and reportable in kind contributions and so the larger unions
SEIU California the teamsters all of the unions that have 50,000 100,000 in the case of SEIU 750,000 members they can start mailing people about their chosen candidate or against a candidate that they oppose and they can do full-on campaigning without limitation and without reporting and I think that might be that might be one of the reasons that these union endorsements are so fractured and so important in this close race to these candidates they can they do this repeatedly or one one one off member communications they like member communications are completely exempt as long as it doesn't go to the general public so they couldn't do radio for instance but as long as it doesn't go to the general public they can spend as much as they like so for people who are union members if you're in the California labor federation if your union is part of that you can get communications from the California federation of labor and from your
individual union and all of that is exempt from the other campaign regulations about finance no reporting and no limits so that's just kind of an interesting it's an interesting angle to watch as these endorsements come down and whether people will be influenced by that or not is hard to say because it's so fractured for instance the the California labor federation endorsed four separate people for governor because individual unions within that federation had their strong history with them let's say there's a business that indoors to candidate could the business you know well let's say with a large number of employees in California you know something like they a business could send it to their employees as a member communication could they that's correct employees and shareholders could receive member communications so any non-profit organization that has membership can send it to their members the Howard Jarvis taxpayers
association does that so that's interesting but the unions of course have so much money because they get it from these force do I mean I know we you know we had the Supreme Court ruling many years ago Janus the Janus ruling is its known which which is determined that it's not you know you're not a lot you you have to allow union members to opt out of contributing money that goes to political purposes but they make it so hard for people to do that so they got a lot of money they do and the do's can be used for this I think the the decision you're referencing is older than Janus I think that's the back decision if I remember right which said that everyone can union must receive permission from members to do political activity with their contribution with their money and that's a different thing the the rights under that are separate but this the Janus decision is you can leave the union entirely but if you don't leave the union and you pay dues or if you're in a private union and you're not allowed to leave it
because the Janus decision only affected public employee unions for complicated reasons but private employee unions are not affected by Janus if you are paying dues to the union for contract negotiations and all the rest of it those dues can also be used for member communications and that encompasses political communications during a campaign for endorsed candidates or not endorsed candidates I mean I go back to something I said you know one I've said it many times in public but it's one of my first encounters with Sacramento is I was working on an initiative to deal with our housing crisis to cap impact fees on homes and to remove the private right of action under seek right on against the whole details of that but it's something that was would would prevent unions who file most of these lawsuits from doing so they file lawsuits to block development in order to extract concessions from developers for example what they call prevailing wage which is much higher than market rate skilled and trained
workers which is a closed shop began only high union members and so on and so forth so they love this thing that I was proposing to get rid of and I remember a meeting with a Democrat who supposed to be a great you know force for good on housing policy saying yes this is great would love this is would be transformational and I said so let's work together on it I'm a Republican you're a Democrat this would be great people like that kind of thing oh I couldn't support you publicly why not well the unions would hate it I know but you just told me it'd be transformational they waved their arm around we were overlooking the state capitals and they said yeah the unions run this place so that's what Democrat politicians think they are completely comfortable with the idea they don't challenge it that the unions run California and that's why these and that that's where all desperate for these endorsements well there are a few people who have challenged the unions but they were immediately targeted and they're out of politics or at least
they were out of the office they were in at the time and this this is a tough it's a tough state if you want to stand up for the taxpayers I have to say it's a very tough environment for people who want to protect regular Californians well but this is the year I feel I'm an already at the whole election argument but we've had so much pain as a result of these policies I think this year we can do it we will see that's what I'm fighting for Susan great to see you as always thank you so much thank you Steve all right joining us now as promised remain ectia and his YouTube channel where he puts out really great content is remain real talk remain I'm so excited to see I can't tell you literally I'm just sharing this before we started taping and I'll tell the audience as well when you popped up on the screen now oh my gosh it's him I think you're just amazing you do these incredible videos educating everyone about the insanity of what's going on in California and the cruelty
of what's going on in California with these Democrats focusing on economic issues and you explain them so clearly and so well and I'm just thrilled to meet you actually so before we do anything else I just want to ask you just do a quick intro to yourself for those who haven't had the beautiful experience of watching your incredible content kind of what's your story and how did you get into being such a viral economic policy content is that a thing I don't know but it's it's amazing what you're doing tell everyone how you got here I saw I work for a company named Lone Depot and where VP of marketing came on I said hey you guys need to turn your cameras on zoom calls and then I said okay fine we started turning on our cameras he said you should get on Instagram so for the upgrade your business my favorite did that a little bit so did it after two years with no effect to be honest with you until November this last November I got my PG&E bill and it was the true up bill for $1,800 and in two days later I got a $45 water bill and so I just was Thanksgiving and I went on a rant and started talking about what's going on with what the YSPG&E
hustling us for so much I got solar I got 27 solar panels in my house so I shouldn't be paying a dime but then I got into that rabbit hole and I started seeing wow this is all policy this is all policy failures the PUC is run by Gavin Newsom all the five chairs in there are appointed by him and then when they leave the PUC they go to PG&E the PG&E guy comes in the PUC and these are the guys are supposed to be looking out for you and me and our bills and lowering the bills every rate hike that PG&E has asked for these guys have given and then I got into the whole water thing and what's going on with water then one by one these things these strings started to unravel for me my latest one has been the the California Air Resources Board they just had a call to comments just ended I think two Mondays ago about increasing our gas prices by their estimates 24 cents by most estimates 75 cents and I love that gas prices are so high unfortunately I think until people get affected in their pocket book they don't care most people are oblivious to
these things until oh man I can't fill up my $100 tank anymore because it's 150 bucks and so I'm glad that things are happening and it's funny to me Steve you're involved in a politics angle I have no idea some of these people where their rationale comes for this test bumping green earth policy man we're trucking an oil from China from South Korea from India from Saudi Arabia on dirty ships so we can't produce it here in California clean refinery it blows my mind whereabouts are you in California I thought you were in San Diego for some reason PG needs and all them policy where are you yeah I'm a San Jose I'm a San Jose California oh my gosh we're nearly neighbors we're gonna go have to get together that's great absolutely well you know that's why no you did an amazing thing on Matt Mayhem the mayor of San Jose that was you as well this one I you're amazing all right so your PG I just explained some terms for those who aren't as familiar PG needs the utility pacific gas on electric which covers the
northern half of California absolutely detested by everyone I published a plan a few weeks ago actually to break up PG and to remove the climate insanity the mandates that are forcing cost higher and PUC is the public utilities commission which as you said is one of the agencies that is completely you know in in the driver's seat for the insane energy cost we have in California we have the highest gas prices in the country the highest electric bills everywhere except for Hawaii the insanity of the gas prices is what as you said we're we're shipping in oil from halfway around the world and it's more expensive gas is more expensive here in California than in Hawaii in the middle of the Pacific Ocean even though we have abundant oil reserves so it's completely insane so those are the terms there but what what about the there's another thing I just want to go through the things you've been focusing on and TikTok seems to be the medium that's really taken off use that right well as interesting you mentioned that I've got a lot of people stealing my content on TikTok actually YouTube has been my primary progress I like to do the deep dives I want to talk more than 35 seconds and so the YouTube gives me that that avenue
to express myself and and dig into these things and my wife and I have stood until four o'clock in the morning answering comments some of our videos have gotten like 10,000 comments it's insane and it's fun it's great people recognize me though and they know they know me I'm walking to a safe way and hey I saw you on YouTube like really it's great so it's nice it's nice to have people recognize this and and actually I'm affecting some things I think because the guys people that are listening to me are battling with California's insane policies they're they're in the same boat I am you know you mentioned energy costs I paid I told you I got 27 solar panels high-end everything and my whole house of digital we pay $8,000 a year that's a car in energy cost with all these panels that if we didn't have panels up oh my god I mean I don't even know what it would be but we pay we we can buy a 2009 camera every single year for the amount of money that we spend on energy in this household with two people another one that caught my eye was that this this this
new tax they're proposing and they're constantly proposing and implementing sneaky little stealth taxes as I call it they talk about a wealth tax these are there's stealth tax where they're coming in and charging you in ways that you probably may not even notice it was a people like you calling your attention that this is this some transfer tax what's this all about Steve I I actually love these taxes because again it hits people directly where it hurts it's a pocket but until it hurts you nobody knows about this and I think one of the great things is unraveling right now is capyhocal in New York and Mamdani you know $7 million was the limit on I think if you're a wealthy person or not back in the good old days now $750,000 how home equity worth is what they're now going to be taxing you on anything about 750 you're rich so that's also the same thing over here which we talked about the billionaires tax right and this is being pushed by the SEIU the service or SIEU whatever it is the service industry union whatever it is right they want to tax billionaires 5% of their wealth unrealize or realize so if
your stock stock price says you know $180 bucks a day we're going to tax you at that $180 level not when you sell it and what actually comes to your home and do your hands same thing with your house if you're sitting on a two and a half million dollar house you got a $500,000 loan on there we're going to tax you on a two and a half million bucks so people say like the old Bernie Sanders thing about oh yeah tax rich tax rich brother tomorrow it's you and this is the whole what he called 1913 was when we started getting the federal taxes right the income tax that was for the rich too that was only for the millionaires to help the war effort for a short period of time did you pay taxes last year I did right so it trickled down but I and we have what 219 billionaires in California David Sacks left Chaman left the newest guy on the block what's his name Zuckerberg he just left Larry Ellison he's gone and the same thing is happening in Washington state the Starbucks he took off he's not happy anymore so this billionaire tax thing about getting money from the rich
man the rich are mobile they can get their assistance to buy them a house on Florida tomorrow move my operations please open me a bank account in Florida I'm done me and you we have a mortgage we got kids in school we got bills so we can't just up and leave the millionaires are mobile we're not so what so just explain this tax and how it would hit regular people or you talk about the transfer tax you talk about the millionaire tax the million tax transfer tax transfer tax for when you sell your house so they want to tack on 60 thousand bucks roughly 60 thousand dollars so they want to jack it up to 6 percent upon the sale of your house right now if you sell a home in California roughly it's going to be 1,000 to 2,000 to 1,500 dollars rough okay as a taxes at leaving your home and moving on to the next stage of your life now they're running out of money and they want to scrape some more off your house I mean it's just incredible isn't it the the insatiable demand for more of our money for that bottomless money pit I mean it's just incredible well I just talked to Herb on Friday Herb Morgan who's running for the state
controller's office yeah he's a great guy I love that guy and he and I agreed that these fraud and abuse that's happening across the state with all these different programs if we were to able to divert the money where it's supposed to go we wouldn't have as much of the spending problem as we have we don't really have a revenue problem we get money the problem is we spend money faster than we get it in and then they need to fill those holes in back film with extra money coming from somewhere else and what really bothers me is people like Rokana for instance he's you know our representative in this area and you would think this guy would preserve some of the wealth and some of the businesses that are here he doesn't care he's completely I think gone to Bernie Bernie Sanders route I mean our estimate Herb I mean we started the year and put out a number this based on a combination of publicly available data and whistle blow tips are like you know after Minnesota last year that all they're up to around Thanksgiving roughly when you were you know the sense of time we were we put out a tipline califraud.com just to see you know what we
would get and we got hundreds of tips and you're looking at that publicly reported data whatever we had an estimate then we put it out at the beginning of the year in the end I went with 250 billion 250 billion as an estimate because I just wanted something that you know like it was a reasonable estimate based on what we saw and that was very high Herb's number now is for I think 430 billion or higher over the last five years that's a huge proportion of the budget and we talked about that as well it was something that at least you know it would get you to pay attention to sit up and pay attention and you're right I think when you sent that to Trump and JD Vans it got attention and I think it's a deeper issue I think we nationwide once we really kind of figure out where all this fraud and abuse is happening when I was growing up it was 800 hour hammer it's 2000 hour toilet seat that you know under Reagan's thing right but I I think this is so much deeper at this point you've got people who are working for let's say the governor or wherever giving giving donations back when they get a deal like that we had three arrests so far Billy Saley I think
there's so many more coming I'm so excited actually that you got this team together I love Herb and I can't wait to talk to Michael Gates and you know a lot of the comments on my videos are oh there's never going to be the rest that's never going to be happening Herb wants to move us off this next to Michael's office so he doesn't have to go that far and just hand him a file and say go and I with with Michael's number you know background and and what he's done in his past I think he's never lost a case and he's aggressive and I like that I think a lot of people I don't think Newsom is going to end up in an orange jumpsuit or anything but I want the rest of the guys downstream to to at least come in front of a hearing we're not going to get this money back Steve ever okay I don't think any of this griff that's happened we're not going to get it back I'm ready to chalk it up to hey okay we lost some money it was a bad bet let's move forward with dignity and you know with some clarity but I I'm hoping to see a lot of orange jumpsuits a lot of bracelets well this is why I put this team together because you know most of my career has been in business and I know that you know nothing happens by one person it's all about the team that you
put in place and and it's weird to me actually that people have been running for governor and all these years and they never do it as a team it's crazy actually and so I always had a different idea about it and met her and and he was he was on board and Gloria Romero for Lieutenant Governor Michael Gates I've known for years I asked him over a year ago two years ago I would say to to run with me for attorney general then he was hired into the justice department and I was you know please for him but obviously that was a loss for the team and for California so I was delighted when he said he was coming back from DC because you know he missed you separated his family and so on and now it's it's incredibly strong we talk all the time and it's for real and we're going to keep going with Calto's we're going to keep and then and if that will end up in Herb's office estate controller so the state controller will then have statutory power legal power to investigate and open the books for any organization receiving state money and Michael will
prosecute it's fantastic I want to quickly ask you about the the San Jose aspect that I touched on earlier the mayor of San Jose Matt Mayhan so you did some really great stuff digging in him because he's been presented he's been sold to Californians as oh he's the moderate Democrat and he's the I've heard the term actually from some of his own supporters financial supporters he's the least insane Democrat which is not exactly a high recommendation but still tell us about Matt Mayhan and your what facts you put about him you know the Bay Area you think it's a huge city it's a small city and I'm not involved in politics but some of my friends were on the funding committee for him so I've met him a couple of times and when he was running for mayor I thought he was reasonable I've been to some city hall meetings and I've seen this whole union in action with with his you know enemies in in the city council so I've seen some how how heavily they do involved in real estate so everybody was talking about homelessness homelessness
he came in and said we're gonna solve homelessness and while I appreciate what he's done okay I don't because here's a deal you promised us to to remove homeless basically from our streets I pay property tax a lot of money every single year and everybody I don't know my neighbors do there was a tent in front of in and out I went ballistic so anyway I started digging into what's going on we ever since all this money has been spent here we've had an increase in homelessness by I think 186 individuals which isn't a lot but it's a percentage of the homelessness in San Jose and the surrounding cities we just had the Super Bowl and we're no homeless on the streets zero zilts not as the same thing that Gavin Newsom did when the Chinese came and and are all the homelessness were magically disappeared for some reason and then two three weeks later they came back same concept here we're sitting in March 20th 21st whatever it is today 20th second I think and I've still now I got homelessness all along with train tracks again all along the highway 87 all along highway 85 I get it it's difficult for you to work with all the
city council members driven by all these unions I understand that but to me this is just a bad check on your results that you promised that we're happening well that's the main thing he goes on about that he's so are you saying that homelessness has gone up since he's been there I've I did a few videos I didn't want to for a city hall and I went previously when I saw you and Chad running and so I just wanted to get in on get my two cents in on who's out there who's running and I figured okay he's mayor of my city so I can get on the action here at least talk about him for a second and so yeah he's the homelessness has gone up since he's been here and whether you can blame him or not but he is the CEO of San Jose all right the CEO San Jose should be able to tell you know the other VPs and such to have certain things done and I don't think and this is the LA thing again you know you're you're building 800 thousand dollar homes you guys in the country you're going to be listening to his 800 thousand dollars yes for a house
for a homeless person man we tried this and God bless all of Californians they have their heart in the right places okay they want to get these people homes but 800 thousand dollars per unit to build a small house come on man he took me to this I don't know good we had it there was a there was some kind of debate what was it there's some debate in in San Jose and he made some invitation to all the candidates to come and see what we're doing in San Jose and home is to say I couldn't do it when the debate was happening but I went a different time so I you know I spent a couple of hours with him and he took me around this facility and it seemed very you know for its you know tiny homes or little little units that they were building there but what's the story with with and he was counting it as the what this is the sort of common sense practical alternative is it that it's very expensive is that the issue it's not it's not common so Steve I want it I want to tell everybody like think about this if this was your backyard okay what would you do would you go out and spend a million dollars or almost a million dollars on a house to put in your
backyard to house one person two people four people whatever it is right or would you try to go get something at Costco maybe a premade something or other you know we have 80 years left in right in California that's part of the you know SB 9 SB 10 thing 800 thousand dollars per unit my friend no and that's that's the first part of it the second part of it is didn't we try to put these guys inside these fancy hotels and all of a sudden you've got blood stained mattresses mattresses it gives the wall that was our last fraud report and Caldoge was that thing project home key what are you doing with giving these guys their own house some of these people perhaps they're not in a place in their life where they may be able to sustain a home and I'm I'm down I'll give you some money that's great but I don't want your cousin building this for 800 thousand bucks and I don't know where it went and all of a sudden you've only built three when you're supposed to build 70 right so what's going on this is the griff right this is the whole fraud thing it's an amazing fact that he's literally touting his record on homelessness well the things he said I'm
you see it in his ads and then and I on the debate stage is I know I had to get things done on homelessness on housing and on crime let me just we use you say that homelessness has gone up since he's getting there it has according to my research and according to my own stupid eyes when down the street from here to in and out I blew my mind in and out that place is packed until midnight you've seen the lines and everything on and out homeless camp are you kidding me please please come over here and grab this guy's tent and just move him to the next aisle down and move him by the train tracks I don't care whatever you do I don't know I'm not I'm not being I'm just being joking I'm joking here but I'm I want to be compassionate but at the same time I pay a lot of money to live here okay well that's the next thing I wanted to get to which is that so homelessness we've discussed on housing there was a report the other week that rated various cities a crime they took 151 different cities around the world and they ran them for affordability on housing with the sort of index that compared house prices with
incomes in the area the fourth least affordable cities in the world are all California no surprise number one was San Jose I'll get out working in the loan business so I have to do open houses every now and then with realtors I was at an open house last week 1,300 square feet and all the rest of you guys in the country who are listening to this that's the shack okay two bedrooms I mean three bedrooms two bath why it was listed for two million and three hundred thousand dollars okay two two million three and a thousand dollars for a 1,300 square foot house on a six thousand square foot lot that house sold for two million two point five million dollars okay this is what we have at San Jose this is the kind of the pricing that we have it's really difficult for someone to be able to afford a home but again I tell everybody we live in Disneyland where we have exorbitant salaries here I think like if you get out of college you're making a hundred seventy five thousand bucks if you get you know get into Facebook or something like that or Amazon so there's a lot of money here but it's so difficult like I know my neighbor's kids can't afford a home here
any of my neighbor's kids right now so unless you know they get to get married and work at Apple or something like that you know making two three hundred thousand dollars you're not going to be able to afford a starter house what's a starter house in San Jose not even you can't find one for under a million bucks right now and if you did it would be a townhouse which would be like eight hundred square feet which is basically your rent again apartments well there you are we'll see he's not he's not exactly taking off in the governor's race he's still around sort of three or four percent so I can tell him most of the polls despite millions of dollars being spent so we'll see we'll follow it for me I'm so excited at this governor's race and I want Eric Swalwell and Katy all your supporters out there please help your constituents out I want them to put this vote because I can't wait I mean there's so many there's Tony Thurman there's Amy it blows my mind having a Democrat candidates there are out there but they're doing us a huge favor and I love it so all you guys supporting Eric Swalwell and Katy Porter you're doing a great job well yeah it is fun and I'm excited about the change that we can have here in California so I think it really
is coming people sick of what's going on and you've been such a great voice and I know it's going to grow so last thing again remind everyone where they can follow you and I mean real talk YouTube I mean R-A-M-I-N real talk R-E-A-L T-A-L-K and I'll see you guys online Steve I really appreciate you bringing me on thank you no it's great to see you and hopefully we can get together in person at some point I would love that all right cheers thank you all right that's our show for today hope you enjoyed I hope you learned a lot as I always do from these great conversations make sure you get involved in our in our campaign Steve Hilton for governor.com and I'll see you back here next week for the next episode of the Steve Hilton show Apple Spotify YouTube wherever you get your podcasts tell your friends tell your families bringing more people to learn about what's going on in California and how we can put it right see you next week everybody
