Deep Review: Sharks Knock Off in the Raiders in Canberra

0:00Now the blind and free shot inside the elbow and the lost goal, elbow lost goal, you got it at 1. But it was down the goal. We lost this very well, this very well. And he has done it, he's got the band-o, he's got the permission. He's gone from as I said, a captain to a legend. And probably rush the lead in the challenge. OK, onto the next game, sharks smash the hapless Raiders at home. You wonder why I'm leaving. That's bullying. 34 to 22. Look, this is exactly the way the sharks needed. Look, we know this is in them. But I just felt there was a period in the game with about 60 minute mark. And the sharks were done. They looked gassed. The Raiders looked like they were coming over the top of them. And the sharks were almost like on the ropes, just taking punches.

1:01But just somehow the ref was nearly about to call it off. And they just hung in there, hung in there, hung in there. And then I think it was a drop ball or something from one of the Raiders players. Yeah, it was, so I think it was Hines or something. He put a kick in or... No kick, no, Martin knocked it on. Yes, yes. So that was off the back off the sharks. They were on the ropes. And now we're just hanging in there. And it was just grit. It was just pure grit because they were about to be rolled over. But the, for some reason, the Raiders just, they would get down the sharkies end and they would either drop the ball or throw a silly offload out. And I mean, sharks do a lot of credit. You know, it's been a tough couple of weeks for them. You know, very easy for them to lose confidence and then it almost snowball. But it didn't. Great win for the sharkies. I thought Nico Hines came up with a few big plays in this game that stood out. That try you just spoke about. He put Jesse Cole-Hoon over. And I think quite often, mate, you see halves. They put in those short kicks and they kind of shit me when you see players do it. They sit back and they watch their own kick. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

2:01Nico just chases it through and, you know, very rare that, you know, a player would drop it into your lap like that. But he did he found Cole-Hoon, they scored. And, mate, Nico's credit. Early in the game, the quick tart saw Horsborough's offside. Just absolutely pinned it on him. Very smart foot. He knew that Corey wouldn't be able to help himself. He took a whack for it. But I kind of think it was, you know, they scored two tries in those opening ten minutes with Corey's off the field. I think it turned out to be the difference. What's hilarious, when you actually watch the slow-mo replay, you watch Hines a V into him and take the lick, take the big hit. And it's just like, geez, that's smart. What do you like? Literally veering into him and knowing the big red is going to see red and go, is that a half back, right? Don't that mean? I thought it was dangerously close to ten meters. Very close. It was not the referee was standing out of five meters back. But from where he tapped it, it was, I still think it was a similar, but it was very close to ten. You can understand why big red thought maybe I'll get away with this one. Yes. Bet, yeah. Beautiful, beautiful win from the sharkies.

3:01What do you think, Jimmy? Yeah, look, the sharkies were too good, mate. The raiders were okay and had their moments, but in that first half, like, the raiders do what they do. And even when they're not looking very good, they just seem to hang in games and find tries against the runner play. But that first half, the sharkies were just creating opportunities and scoring way too easily. They were, you know, pretty dominant through the middle. I thought in the first half, making easy meetings. They were offloading quite easily. And I was really concerned about where the game could have ended up. And to the raiders' credit, they did dig in and stay in the game, but sharkies were a comfortably the better team, you know. That looks slick and attack. I'll tell you that much. I think Tringle, especially the first half, they had a ball on a string. Just having another look at that. Corey always was, Jimmy, nothing. The other thing that would have mattered. I have a Corey. But what's the replay? He's actually standing directly in line with the referee. So you can have 100% understand why he thought that was 10 metres. They said it in commentary. And I had no chance to go back and look at it, because there was no replays when it happened. But I know they said that, yeah, he was in line with him.

4:02And that's another where I'm just, again, maybe it was the right call, but if he was next to the referee, it's like, well, bloody hell, what do you want to do? I reckon he was back. And I reckon that's very unlucky, for Corey. Oh, really? Well, Robert, take a second and go upstairs and just check it. And you might be right. But it's too big an impact on the game. The amount of things we go, buddy, upstairs for all these days. Go upstairs and just double check it. I don't think players get enough credit for, like, we're watching everything on a bird's eye view. And then we get to watch the replay, too. When you're out there, it's a fucking... Oh, you've got to exist. You're looking here. It's a million miles an hour. You don't know what's going on half the time. You're just reacting to a lot of shit. Let's see what's smart by Niko. Good for Niko. Yes. There's an opportunity here. I'm going to take it. Sorry, I just got the replay. I'm about to show it. Whether or not he got back, it was just smart play from Niko. So smart. I reckon it's nine and a half. Oh, they're getting the bid. No, they're getting the bid. It's nine and a half.

5:02And he's literally 45 centimeters. It should have been send off. Yeah, you know, it's a good point. It's a good point. You can see why Niko was lying. Yes. Niko, he would have about to run it. It was a bit of a try. So I think it's a test. Robbed. Bit of an eight point try. Yeah, eight point try too. And it was dangerous. Like high. You got to lift him off the ground. I have to turn the result. We'll see. Yeah. What do you think it's going, man? Yeah. I mean, obviously the sharks won and end up winning it pretty comfortably. But it was a bit kind of like scrappy from both teams for big chunks. A lot of the first half was really good. I thought the first half was super entertaining. For sure. But I think you take out that first 10 minutes where Corey Horzberg was off the field. And then, you know, it was pretty pretty even when it was 13 on 13, basically four tries of pop. And then obviously the last one at the end there for the sharkies to kind of seal it. But, yeah, the rate is a little bit clunky. I think he's probably fair to say. Just still working some stuff out with obviously they've got the new halves combination and all that sort of thing. But, yeah, that start that the sharkies got off to probably, yeah,

6:04as Ru said, was the difference I'd say in this one. We'll talk about sharks and then we'll get into the Raiders. I know he had an error or two. But I actually thought Cole Horz, especially at least the first 20 minutes. I thought he was freaking outstanding. I didn't realise he was that strong in contact. He's had a good month or so. He had a fantastic month to finish last season as well for the sharkies. Obviously he got chemistry. Kindness that'll return over the next few weeks. But that forward park is looking pretty good. T. Wilton returned this week. I thought he looked sensational for the sharkies. Billy Burns. I think where he's career is that now from where it was when he was at the drag. And so what not? And then Britt Nicaro comes back in. One hell of a forward park. It's shaping out. It's what, it's only happened last year when Nicaro came back from injury or suspension or something. And Billy Burns got to start and end up keeping that spot in some key games. Come finals time. And Nicar, Britt Nicaro, who's had a mortgage on that right edge spot of the sharks for years and years, it's just, it's exactly what the sharks need.

7:04Is that competition of Burns getting one crack there? Alongside, sorry, I shouldn't say one because he was playing left edge when Wilton was out. But Wilton's come back. He was tremendous. I think he scored the first try. Yeah. Burns scored a brilliant try. It's exactly what they need for that back row in the edge. Just to put pressure on Nicaro and go, mate, you can't get away with eight runs and you know, scoring you one good try game. You need to win this spot. Well, the good thing is is Nicaro comes back with him, Wilton and Cole Hoon. Like you've got a relatively young-ish back row that you can build for the next four or five years. So yeah, it's a good spot to be in. I thought, I don't know, Blake, I thought was just, just went all day. Just really, you know, the one player that can go tit for tat and even outperform sometimes, that tough race forward pack. And I thought he took it a real opportunity upon himself to go. No, I'm still a top tier front row guys. 17 runs, 222 runners. He had 85 post contact. Probably coming off a game last week where I thought he was incredibly flat. This is what, you know, the best place to go. I honestly looked tired last week.

8:04Yeah, which I hadn't seen before, really. But you know, once again, going up against one of the top tier forward packs in the game, Adam was sensational. Wilton already wrapped. I thought he was great. I loved the, I think it was the Will Kennedy try. Just wrapping Tig Wilton again, the line that he ran on that. Yeah. It's so easy now to get pinned for that sort of stuff. But I think him and Brittnick are, they just about do it better than any other back rowers in the league. They very rarely give away those penalties. They very rarely. They score than they go upstairs and it gets pulled back. But just the, the way that Trindall ball played slowly. Time to play. So fucking good. Man, the only thing with Trindall, I just need consistency now. I just need, I don't need that every week. But give me an 8 out of 10. Because that's his biggest weakness now. We've seen that on his day, he's a bloody good six. And good enough to beat most sides. It's just the, it's just like this stage of the problem. There'll be three good games. And then you'll have a game where you barely touches the ball. And so he's just got to find a way to give you an 8 out of 10 every single week.

9:04Because it seems to me like they've settled and look famous last words with the shark. He's because I'll change. But it seems like they've settled is Trindall's the main man. Hines is the guy that will guide him around the park. It seems that way anyway. Now look, I fucking bet you next week. Hines will come out and put on four triceps. But you know what I'm saying? Yes. Now negatives. We were just wrapping him last week about being a top tier center about how his defense is arguably the best in the comp. Bringing Debbie back into the conversation. We are. Debbie's coming back in. Looking back. Shout out. What happened to your boy? You know, what is doing? Fucking defended like me on the week. I'm cool bastard. We just got given a bath, didn't he? I mean, I get three errors too. Sometimes you're watching a game and I test says, I, you know, a guy had a tough afternoon, but then you read the stats. And I got tough. I like 10 missed tackle. It's three errors. There is. Now honestly, if you would have said to me in the next month, really missed 10 tackles, I would have taken you all that. You said the over under is 10.5.

10:04I take under. Yeah. Just 10 in a game. And with all due respect to him, we'll talk about him in a minute. We'll wrap him galore. But like not like he's gone up against fucking red gas near over there. He missed the sungy who's just found his way into the centers. He just gave him an absolute bath. He missed 24 tackles in 14 games last year. The fuck? Yeah. That's only half in a game. Yeah. He surely injured or something. Has to be. I think he just had a fight. I think he just had a fight. I think he just got shown up. Yeah. I think he heard me give him a wrap last week. But like the worst weird is like he's great in contact. He's so strong. So sungy's the goat, but is he the goat that much? I don't know. Well, that was the other thing, my hero. He got beaten contact. He just thought there was one that, um, savage just left him. Yeah. That was crazy. That speed from savage. That in a way. In heroes, defense. Sure, that doesn't count. That was some of the best footwork I've ever seen. You know, it's the space of a square meter up there with two of us. It's extra on the wing for the roosters.

11:04That time we ripped. Oh, whatever the storming was. Well, I don't even think that was a mistackle. I don't think he made contact with it. The movement of savage on that. Oh, so good. I mean, that's why he keeps you spot really. You know, he has it sum up and down, but then he has that name. Um, yeah. So not great. Um, outside of that. I thought, I thought it was actually pretty good this game, to be honest. Um, he has some good defense as well. For some areas. Got through a bunch of work. Um, yeah, look, I love Kennedy as well. You know, without being an absolute superstar, I thought he was quite good. Um, so look, good win for the shark. Exactly what they needed. Now onto the Raiders. Um, I thought Kiawigs was quite good. Um, but my biggest takeaway from this is I actually, I've actually been quite happy with sanders. It's actually strange that I'm getting a little bit. Look, it's, it's early doors. It's early doors. But I just put in my notes here. There was a, there was a period there. I think the game was on the line. And so strange gets the ball one off the rock. And he looks outside him and then no Martin's pointing to kick on the third tackle.

12:08And I'm just like, strange has got to get better at communication. There's no way in hell as an Australian essentially representative or, well, there are, there are bouts. But your edge should be pointing to kick. He should already have his role sorted by you. You should've already been like, you're getting at that fucking player. And it just looked like that. Strange had, he had no plan. It was really just going to get the ball. And I just think for strange is like, yes, it is good to be an off the cuff. Get the ball. Just do your thing, player. But as you develop as a six, you're going to have to get to the point in good ball where you are demanding players get to certain points. And I just worry a bit about his communication and tackle. Because I actually, I've actually been quite happy with Sanders if I'm being honest. I think strange has been quite very quiet this year. I hate strange on the right side. He's got a dynamic left foot step. He's got a right hand fend. So being on the left hand side was perfect. I don't move to the right. I understand, you know, he played his genius there. I watched him play Rotten off the roosters for a number of years.

13:09He looks lost to me, mate. And you watch him in the first half. He plays in a dinosaur. He doesn't run the football until the second half, which I assume. Ricky grabs him by the collar and says, hey, do what you do best. But I just think he's in a crossroads at the moment of trying to organize that edge. And maybe it's because when he played on the left side last year, because he had Hudson Young and experienced play out there. Just telling him what to do. But I just, yeah, and it like you've got Ethan Strange playing on the wrong side of the field. You've got Noah Martin out there as well. Also playing on the wrong side of the field. He played on the left most of last year. He's played on the right. But you got to me to sing it right. And I like it. It's a big fucking job for a guy. He's a king. He's gone on a kangaroo tree. He's done those things. He's still young. Yeah. What is it? 40 games of NREL? Yeah. I really, I hate that he's on the right side. I think it takes away so many of his strengths. He's not on the head there. Pardon me. He's just, he's on the wrong side of the field. And they've done it to accommodate Ethan Strange. Sorry, I really am giving up. Oh, it's gone.

14:09Yeah. He's on the wrong side of the field. And some players can play both sides of the rock. And the nature of their game, it doesn't change anything. But as you said, like he steps off the left. He fends with the right. And he's natural on the other side of the field. And because of the kicking boot of sand, as they've done it to accommodate him, he just doesn't look naturally in that position. He's so seen as a left foot kicker or right foot kicker. He's left. See, surely he can still just get yourself in a position where, you know, on the fifth tackle you swing around if you have to. Like, I feel like sanders could handle either side much better than strains, because strangers' strengths are very specific. It's a huge step and a massive fend, whereas I feel like sanders more of a ball player. He's got a good running game too. And naturally, I probably also put emphasis on how good a foggy lost organising it at the team around the park. And I'm with you. I think sand has been pretty impressive despite a few losses. But he's also a rookie. So it just adds a lot more pressure on strains to sort of step up. But yeah, I've been really happy with sanders.

15:09I think it looks great out there. I really do. It's just, I don't, you know, I feel like strangers aren't really offering him much. Like, it really is sand is trying to break through and granted it probably is, because strangers move sides. But unfortunately for strange, at some point, you're going to have to try to outgrow. Like, I don't think anyone's expecting strange to be as good on that's the right side than the left side. However, you've got to grow as a player and try to add things to your game. So at the very least, you're not conscious. Like, and I say this, you know, not to be too harsh on a strange, but like, yesterday, like, what did he contribute as a player? At least not a lot. But you are one of the best players on the field. You're an Australian squad member. And I think that as you grow, and look, he's what, 21 years old, he's fucking so young still. But as you grow, you'll start to learn like, okay, I can't impact the game how I want to, but I still need to be really good in all these other areas.

16:09And it is literally, it could be as simple as, all right, I just keep it no-mountain short. And then, you know what, then I get up flat and I just go flat after that, whereas I feel like he just doesn't really, he's almost like his head's caught up too much and the fact that he's on the wrong side of the field and he's not working for him. To look at the impact on the running game, like last season, he had 14 tries, he had 12 tries this, four games this year. Starts on everything. We know, zero tries, zero tries this. Which is crazy for a guy if he's dead. Yeah. Well, it was run meters up. Because I'm pretty sure he went in half time, yes, so it was zero run meters. Like, I don't think he ran the ball. He's abging similar to last year. So 72 meters per game, 75 last year. Definitely game one this round one and this game. I don't think he, I think he might have had one or two runs in those halves. And then I think he gets in there at half time and Ricky gives him. He gives him a spray. Never rev out to go again. The other thing with the riders boys, I understand Ricky's thought process behind it, but I, I think I said this last week, I hate the Tom Starling starting and then Braille comes off the bench.

17:09I think they should do the inverse of that. But I'm also sort of starting to think, you know, I'm Paddy's now had four weeks in reserve. It's played big minutes and all of them is done pretty well. You maybe need to get on Paddy back on the bench. I had the exact same point I was going to bring up. I actually really agree. The sediments from Ricky early on. He's going to be a long-term nine for us. And he needs to develop playing big minutes in cup. But we're chasing points at the end of the game and you're bringing on Jaden Braille. That is not Jaden Braille. He's got a bit of a running game, but he's not known as a creative nine. He's a hard working big minute sort of number nine. And I rate him as a player, but again, like it's almost like, if you're going to have him in Tom Starling, I'd probably start right away for 25. And then just bring Starling on to some fatigue leagues and let him do some damage round right. Because he is a creative ball running number nine. But to that point, Paddy's had his big minutes in cup. I think it's no knock on Jaden Braille. I think he's too good to be playing Cup now. Get him back in and let him share this role with Tom Starling.

18:10Unfortunately, you're losing the luxury of saying, going to develop in yourself last cup. What do you want from four? Yeah. Yeah. We need to win. You need to win. Yes. You're now lost three games in a row. You take on Newcastle this week, which won't be easy in Newcastle, then South Sydney, then Melbourne. Like, don't start winning games at football. This could go from... I'm not a premier. Well, if you don't win Nightmare. Yeah, if you don't win next week, you might be one from fucking seven. Yeah. I think we'll see Alan Paddy's name on the team sheet tomorrow. And I think he did go even further. Like, you know, yeah, it's super harsh, but is there a world where Alan Paddy's getting the most minutes out of all three of those four? Because you're one from four. Like, I'm not saying, I would definitely do this, but I feel like it's getting to the point where someone's getting dropped. And some big changes need to happen. If you're one from four, if you don't win next week, that's one from five, then you got south and storm. All of a sudden, it's like, you're running out of time to get those points back to even getting the top eight. You going styling and paddy? Yes.

19:10Yeah, absolutely. It seemed to work fine last year. And also, like, let's say he comes back in and it doesn't work. Okay, he goes back and he can get his minutes. The season's already over anyway. Yeah. Or he comes back in, you get a few wins. You feel confident that, okay, we can get any, you know, you've won three or four on the chart. You feel confident that, okay, he's only getting 20 minutes of game. Let's just dropping back to Kuka, you said last cut for a few games to get his 80 minutes. And then, you know what I mean? I don't think he's going to be the one difference that wins you games, but he might just be that safety net, get you a few wins in a row, then go back to get his minutes. This is the thing is, you're going to have this shared Hawking rotation. You want two Hawks on the bench that you're going to use. He can come on and turn a game. Whether that's with his boot, whether that's with his running game, he can turn a game and bring points from a chasing point. Yeah. I don't think Jaden Braille can. And you're getting to the point where it's like, last year, you could get away with, you know, I guess, trying things and if you're on the edge of your six or seven, that's okay. Whereas this is not a right off year anymore.

20:11Like last year, you could almost, we all did write it off. We sat there and said, this is a rebuild year. You don't have that excuse this year. You don't have the excuse of going, oh, we're blooding a bunch of young players, therefore we didn't make the eight. So you're running out of time to, it's one from four. That's fucking tough. And now one win was extra time it's mainly. Yeah. So something needs to happen to happen soon. Some positives just quickly, but savage speed. Like Jesus Christ, that first try where he just went, form after burners. And then the second one where he just went, shimmy, shimmy, shake and bake. Thanks for coming. Try time, baby. Wow. And then he saw, he's after burners, and then you're like, who's going to be there in support because how do you keep up with him? I think Kyle Weiss is like, whoosh. Yeah, mate. Kyle Weiss is probably being the best player all year. He's been so good. Yeah. He's been so good. So lots of art, and lots of questions for the way with the tail. Yeah.
