Mike and I talk Angels baseball five times a week with you Monday through Friday every single weekday talking about your favorite team and of course we're entering our fifth season as the host of Locked on Angels. We hope you leave here a more informed angels fan and a smarter baseball fan overall on today's show. Grayson Rodriguez's second start gave us quite the scare before things got much better. Mike is Mike trout back the way he's moving. We'd like to think so, but first, Zach Netto wasn't offered a long term contract extension this off season. Let's talk about it. Yeah. CAA baseball who represents Zach Netto said he was not offered a formal long term contract this past off season. It was his first year of arbitration so the Angels could have negotiated a long term deal like they did with Mike trout once he hit arbitration and just to clarify, that's not to say that they didn't think about it or discuss it. It just didn't happen this off season, but of course, that comment sent everybody into

2:04back flips and freak out mode and I can't believe this would happen and why would he stay and all that narrative. We'll talk about that in a minute. But Bill shaken of the LA Times was able to talk with Zach Netto about a possible extension and got his thoughts on heading into 2026, John, once you share with us what Zach Netto said. Zach Netto on the team's expectations heading into this season. He said, we all know and we all believe that if we play with each other and if we play how we want to play, there's nobody who can beat us and then on getting trout to the playoffs and wanting to get trout to, or I should say, getting to the playoffs and wanting to get trout to those playoffs, he said, we need to help Mike. We all pointed to Mike, get him to the postseason. He is, if not the greatest player to play this game, one of them. He needs to be in the playoffs and then when you talk about a long-term extension, Mike in regard to Zach Netto, you do have to talk about Mike Trapp. He got his first extension when his first year of arbitration came and he signed a six-year

3:07144.5 million extension for 2015 through 2020. But he got a second extension and that's the one he's currently on in 2019. 12 years, 426.5 million. Remember when that was a lot of money? Yeah. Biggest deal that you could offer somebody, peanuts, peanuts. While the angels were in a better place back then, then especially compared to now when trout signed that extension, they have not had any success since then. Yeah. So when Bill Shankin asked Zach Netto about his interest in a long-term extension, Shankin wrote Netto first talked of loyalty when he established himself in high school, bigger schools tried to lure him to transfer there and in college, the same thing happened. And Johnny, he didn't transfer at either levels. Zach Netto said, the biggest thing for me, the biggest thing for my family that they've taught me is loyalty. It's something that I still stick with today. It's just a matter of being loyal, seeing the growth that we have here.

4:09If it happens, it happens. I'd love to stay here and I would love to be here. But if it doesn't, then not every road is meant to be. And I'm going to be where my feet are every day and that's here with the city of Los Angeles and with the angels and give them all of my best every single day. Shankin asked Netto if Arty's comments about winning, not being a top priority for the fans would be a concern for Netto and deciding whether to sign a long-term contract. Netto paused and said, I don't really have an answer for that, but we all know how important the fans are. They helped us big time. They motivate us and give us energy. So I'm going to just be where my feet are and go out every single day and play the game. Great. Now, Zach Netto thinks that we don't want to win. That's just wonderful. We didn't say that Zach said that. Now when he was asked if he'd harbor any reservations about signing with the angels and then missing the playoffs like Trout has, he said, we'll see.

5:09So big question, John. Will Zach Netto be offered an extension? Will he sign an extension? What happens if he does? What happens if he doesn't? Yeah. I think the more that you wait on a Zach Netto extension, the more the price is going to be. When you look around the league, you see a lot of these young guys taking an extension really early on. Mike, Zach Netto has performed incredibly over these years of pre-arbitration where he just gets that league minimum. And now they're getting into a place where they have to compensate him for how well he's playing. And not that he wouldn't be compensated for how well he's playing if he signed a long-term extension. But I think he's just going to get more expensive as the years go on. He's only getting better as we see in the last two years. And I believe he'll get better in year three. So that price point is going to go up. My concern is that our marino and company are not interested in spending any money and

6:11especially any long term money. And so that's what's frustrating here. You have to consider what's going to happen when they negotiate the CBA is they're going to be a lockout. I imagine something for Zach Netto getting done after that, of course, but you also have him through the year 2029, Mike, you've said on previous shows in regard to the young guys. These are their long-term extensions, the control that the angels have over guys like a hobby and Sean Well and Netto. When I get that, but Netto is slowly becoming the face of this franchise and is certainly somebody you would want to lock down for the long term. So I think he will be offered an extension, but not in the time frame that maybe you and I and everydayers and angel fans would want to see it. And he's going to cost a bit more than 15 million a year already. So you're probably going to want to figure that out because his comment about, you know, you've got to get somebody for 15 million, everybody went 15 million, you know, you're

7:12getting that, that triple A guy for 15 million, right? Nobody's 15 million, especially really good players. Now, I do want to point out two things that he said, he is loyal and that's really good to hear. And I would love to stay here. I would love to be here, don't need to repeat that so that every, every angel fan hears that very clearly because there's a lot of people who will use the narrative. Well, nobody wants to come here. Nobody wants to play. Zack Netto does, right? And there's a lot of reasons why he doesn't want to be here. There's a lot of reasons why he shouldn't want to be here. There's a lot of reasons why he would want to bail. But this is a guy who said loyalty matters in high school. I got recruited college. I got recruited didn't go anywhere. I went where I was honored and I honored them and I would love to stay here. I would love to be here. I think, John, that he does go to free agency because that's what just young players are doing now. They're going to free agency to test the market. The angels will have an opportunity to sign him.

8:13I'm hopeful that when that happens, it's not already Marino at the helm. There are rumors about, you know, next year, depending on what they do with the lockout, the value of a team could go up because there could be a salary cap or some sort of limiter that could help teams to be more expensive. Then, 2028 is expansion. There's expansion money. Arty Marino probably wants to expansion money. I mean, how much money do you really need? Arty, right? Like he was offered almost four billion for the team when he put it up for sale. I think by that time, John, 82, 83 years old, he could be out of the picture. And Zach Netto is still under contract 28 and 29. And so depending on who the GM is and depending on who the owner is, that potentially could turn the table. And he could be somebody that they offer a significant extension to, if they don't do it earlier, which earlier obviously would be better. But I'm just not sure that that's going to be an Arty Marino's playbook. My thing is, is that you look at what Trout said, or I should say what Trout did in 2019.

9:19And it was all about loyalty. We had the banners and all that stuff. And then look at the narrative around it. Well, Trout doesn't want to win because he stayed with the angels. Yeah. That takes me off to no end. Yeah. Because at the time, you would believe that Billy Eppler, GM and Arty Marino would want to have built off that. And they didn't. They certainly didn't. And at the time, they had show hate in his second year. They had pooled still. They had Justin Upton. They never got any pitching mics. So that didn't help the cause, right, whatsoever. But you would like to have believed and probably convinced Trout that, hey, we've got you for 12 years, we're going to go win something. And they haven't done anything. And it doesn't help that Trout was injured. It doesn't help that Anthony Rendon was injured. And again, those are the guys that you won on your team. They just didn't play together. Trout, Botani, Rendon, all those guys just didn't play together. And then you hope that somebody like Jared Walsh comes along,

10:19you're like, oh, look at this guy. And then he gets long COVID and migraines. And he can't play anymore. And it's just like a bad situation. So you just hope that if Zack Neto signs an extension, it's not with this regime. It's with a regime that wants to win. And believes the fans want to win too, because that's a significant part of it. But if I have to hear that Zack Neto signs an extension and people say, he just wants to coast, he doesn't want to compete. Don't tell me that. Look at the way the guy plays ball. Right. And it's just so absolutely ridiculous that that's the narrative around Trout. And in 2019, you'd expect within 12 years of that contract that somebody would do something. And so to put the blame on Trout and inevitably Neto that they don't want to win, that's just not fair in my book. It's not fair at all. And that Neto has shown that he wants to win. Neto has shown that he is somebody who is a hustler. He's somebody who wants to be a leader. And he wants to win with these guys.

11:20He wants to win with L and Sean O'Hell. And that's what I want to point out. He's like, we want to win for Mike. We want to win with these guys. And you said it on the show, nobody's coming to save them. And he even said, if everything kind of hits, we stay healthy. And that seems to be the narrative. And you can call it positive thinking. You can call it hope. I mean, this is coming from the guy who really is the face of the franchise right now. And probably wouldn't say that he is, but I think he is. Zack Neto saying, man, these guys, they're good. And I think if we figure it out and we can stay healthy, we're going to be good. Is he right? They have to prove that. But I like, I'm going to listen to him. And I'm going to be hyped because Zack Neto is hyped. The catch 22 is that for the same people that will say he's coasting, because he doesn't want to leave the angels and just collect a paycheck. The same people will say that he's not loyal for staying with the angels. Right, right, right. So that's the catch 22 is you're danged if you do and danged if you don't. And I fear that that's what's going to happen with Zack Neto. Maybe even some of these other young guys that could be extension candidates as well.

12:23So you're not going to please everybody, of course. And it's Neto's life. And if Neto wants to see a winning team here, he's certainly part of that. And he's part of that culture. And I just think that it's not going to happen under this regime. And I wouldn't want it to happen under this regime because at this, frankly, at this point, I don't think you deserve it. Right. You don't deserve to have somebody like Zack Neto, just like they don't deserve to have somebody like Mike Traub. Yeah. I 100% agree with you. And I was going to add like, and they haven't earned it, right? They haven't earned it. They haven't done what is necessary to help this team be better. And even previous GM's, they haven't earned it, right? They had all the great hitters, but had no pitching. And now they have these young hitters and they're not surrounding them with quality supports. And it's just, it's frustrating. And then they have all the narratives and excuses. Bottom line is, I really appreciated these, these words from Zack Neto, really appreciated this interview. I really, I'm going to cheer for him even more now than I have been. And I haven't been holding back. But like this, this makes me go, bro, I'm in and I'm going to support you.

13:26And I'm ready to, I'm ready to go nuts. I'm ready to show up to the stadium and give already money just to see Zack Neto because he's fantastic. I'll always be a Zack Neto fan, no matter what happens in his career. Thanks for making lockdown angels your first lesson of the day. 16:32show notes. The angels walked off the Kansas City Royals and Tempe on Monday for a five to four win. But let's get into all the takeaways for this one. Like I mentioned it, Grayson Rodriguez was shaky and they locked in the first inning of his second start had us all very nervous. You let three batters reach with two singles in a walk. Then he hit Brandon Dury in the helmet who's playing for the Royals right now. Fortunately, he was okay, but that did bring in a run. Grod got a double play, which let the runner from third score. And he got to fly out to end the inning. Then all the sudden, he locks in in that second inning, struck out the side in the second. Then he has a one, two, three inning in the third. Grayson Rodriguez told Doug Padilla of the OC register that he has never been more pleased with his curveball and slider at this point of the preparation process. This is the best those pitches have ever been.

17:33So I have that going for me. He said the fastball Vila was there. The big thing for me is working on command, which can always be better. He said he over threw that fastball in the first inning that hit Dury. He said, that's a recipe for disaster, a pitcher out there over throwing. Obviously, you don't want to hit anybody in spring training. I hated to see that. Now he had a 38% whiff rate on the day. Three of his four sliders got a swing and miss. Four of his 14 fastballs got whiffs. And then Mike, he landed his curveball for four called strikes through it seven times and four of those were in the zone called strikes. Well, and then the fastball Vila actually ticked up as the game went on from 95 to 96. So I question for you, Rodriguez in the past has had a walk rate of 8. 2% or less in the majors and 8. 2% was 2023. It was like 7.8 and 2024. Mike, I think that's a good sign that he's going to get his command back.

18:36But what do you think? Yeah, for sure. And I love what he said. He said, man, I'm feeling good about these two pitches. They're the best they've ever been. That's a quote. And so he knows he needs to work on his command. So he's going to work on his command. And that's going to come for him. He did pitch last year. This is the first time he's pitched in over a year. So I kind of need some time. I kind of wonder if there's something to the fact that he doesn't have those bone spurs in his elbow. We know that he's been pitching with those since like 2022 in double A. And so maybe there's a sense of getting control of your pitches because it doesn't feel like it used to. It doesn't hurt like it used to. You're not using that lat to compensate for the bone spurs in your elbow. Maybe there's something to that too. Yeah, I got a little rubber arm and he's like, wow, this feels really good. It's the way it's supposed to be. Yeah. I love hearing that. So second thing that happened in the game was the defense. Trout looked really comfortable in center field. We're going to talk about him in our third segment. But he caught a ball on the warning track and he caught it on the run.

19:39It felt like old school might trout, which is good because that moves Joe Adele the right field and he's good in right field. His best position made a nice running catch along the foul line in the fifth inning. So Zuki said that they've been working really hard to get jumps. He said, I know first base outfield coach Adam Eaton has been talking with them about their footwork and to see that payoff was really great to see. That was again, Kurt Zuki, John is letting Trout be trout going to pay off. Look, this is what he wanted to do. Yeah. You and I have argued against it. Yep. He said it year over year over year. Trout, you got a D.H. You got to do something. You got to get out of the busy center field. He said, nope. And he said, no. And again, what is there to lose other than, you know, maybe 30 games of Mike Trout that that's what there is to lose. But Mike, it's, it, you got to let Trout be trout. Yeah. And, and, and quite frankly, we've had a one sided argument about all of this.

20:40Trout has never heard us argue about the fact that we would like to see him stay off the field just because we want him to stay in the batting order. Yeah. The truth is, is, is, if this is what he wants to do, then more power to him and so far, so good, at least in terms of how he looks in center field, he seems comfortable. Yeah. And, you know, he said that he felt like there was a lot more running when he does play the corners because you got to back up first base. You got to back up third base. So all of that to say, if this is what Trout wants to do at this point of his career, considering the angels have let him down for the last seven years since he signed that extension. We talked about in segment one, then, then let the guy play his game, let him play where he wants to play. If it's center field, that's fine. And I'm actually really happy that it's paying off. John, Jack Ahanoetz and Chase Silseth got into this game. Ahanoetz, a little bit, a little bit wild, but he made pitches when it mattered. He had three score the synnings, two hits, two case, John, just 41 pitches.

21:41That looked like classic vintage Jack Ahanoetz, right? Like him pitching minimal ways and getting through the innings, hit a K and then a single and then a double play on a sinker in the first inning of work, had a one, two, three inning in the fifth. Then a ground out, a double a fly out and a K to finish the six, two strikeouts, which is great. And then Chase Silseth pitched really well, a 50% whiff rate on his pitches, half of his pitches. They were swinging and missing two innings, two hits, one walk and four case. And again, low amount of pitches, 36 pitches in those two innings and then Jose Firmin, he did come in, he struggled, he let the game get tied, but then the angels were able to walk it off in the ninth Nelson, rata walked, Trayman seen he doubled and then Yolmer Sanch has singled to bring in rata from third. It's about time Trayman seen he did something because every time I turn around and it's like, oh, he struck out. Oh, granted. I thought he was going to have a better spring than what he's had so far. In terms of hitting from yesterday's game, just seven strikeouts total from the angels

22:47and the only regulars with strikeouts were trout and salar. The angels were able to answer back for Grayson Rodriguez after that tough first inning. Salar walked Adele singled and moved salar to third. How about salar, man? Run in the bases like that. I talked about the other day. He went first to home and then on a single from Joe Adele, he goes first to third. I love that. He lets salar be salar if we're going to let trout be trout. Yeah. And salar apparently just wants a DH full time. Yeah. That's going to be the phrase. Let Adele be Adele. Let netto be netto. We'll just throw that out there for everybody. And so while he's on third, Christian more drives him in with a single. And then in the second, netto drove in Darnot with a double, netto scores from second on trout's single. And then later on, Oswald Parasa hits a huge home run in the fourth inning, 107.8 off the bat, 423 feet. Mike, we've talked about it. This guy is hitting the ball. Super hard. Yeah.

23:47Do I need to walk back my comment about how I said it the other day, I think the first two guys to be DFA to make room for other guys are Victor Marderos and Oswald Parasa. Do I need to walk that back at this point? I don't know if it's going to be because of the offense and the stats at spring training. I think it might be because of his years of control. I think that's why the angels would hang onto this guy and not put him in on a waiver wire claim because he's got four years of control and they are going to get him for cheap. And so that's why they would keep him around. But if they do keep him around, John, it might pay off because he's having a good swing, a good spring, he's putting up some numbers, he's coming through when necessary. He's able to play all over. He has good defense behind him. I think he's somebody that probably won't be the first that they would send away if they need to send somebody away. Yeah. The point you've got Vaughan Grissom, you've got Oswald Parasa, feels like Adam Frazier might be in the mix and then of course Christian Moore and they're trying to add some versatility by having him over at third base. So it's one of those situations where it's a good problem to have and my initial thought

24:51was, well, you just traded for Grissom. And since he's your most recent acquisition, it might be that Parasa is old news. But you can't forget how good of a hitter Parasa was in 2022 in his first season. And so I said this when we got him, he feels like somebody who the Angels can be patient with or the Yankees, they don't have time to be patient with a Oswald Parasa. They're trying to win. They're trying to get to the World Series. That's their goal every year. The Angels just want to win games. Well, the players do, apparently the fans don't or Arty Moreno doesn't either. But the fact is, I think Oswald Parasa working with somebody like Brady Anderson and John Mabry, maybe there's something to that because he is the way he's hitting the ball is going to lead to a lot of success for him in 2026. So if this is the version of Parasa that we're getting and he played first base yesterday Mike. Remember that was something he hadn't done before and was doing it in the majors last

25:52year because they never got a true backup to Nolan Sonowell. And so by the time Parasa came along, they were like, all right, let's put him there. So look, versatility and hitting the crap out of the ball, that's that's going to really help your case to make this team out of spring training. 27:57time today. Johnny, did you hear what Mike Trout did Saturday? He played baseball? Yeah. And he ran fast. He ran real fast. He ran real fast. He was running shoes on Mike Trout ran 29.9 feet per second. And trying to beat out an infield hit on Saturday. Now you might be thinking, well, why is that so significant? Well, because prior to his injury, he routinely hit 30 feet per second, which is considered elite runner, baseball, at least baseball runner, you know, I'm still saying it wrong. It's elite speed. That's what I was trying to say. Elite speed. It's the end of the show. It's fine. You can, you can, you can mess up stuff. Thank you every day. It's for still being here. So that's what's really unique about this and significant about this. It's a really good sign for the health of Mike Trout. Mike said, it's a sign that he's feeling great. He said, I got a lot left in the tank. Every time I hear that, I hear Mark Henry.

28:58I got a lot left in the tank. Sorry. And then he said he's going to try and get 30 regularly. Mikey, Mikey. It's okay. You can do it every once in a while. Let's start with center field first. Yeah. Yeah. Let's calm down. Let's pump the brakes. Now, Kurt Suzuki said, we were all joking around in the clubhouse about it. It was amazing to see talking about Trout running that fast and then Kurt added. I think he feels good. He's moving around good. I think mentally he's in a good place. So everything's trending in the right direction for sure. John, you ready? Is Trout back? So back. Look, I love what Kurt said about mentally being in a good place. Maybe that is what this feels like, Mike, with Trout being back in center field, making the play like he did yesterday. Yeah. That's the biggest thing of all is that Trout mentally is in a good place. And look, I know that we've talked many times in this specific episode that the angels have let him down since 2019.

30:00And he's let himself down by being injured and not being out there. You know, he takes that personally. He's been emotional about it. And it's been frustrating for him. Now he's surrounded by some like really good dudes. Shadow, Sean Owell, O'Hoppy, Adele, the guys on the mound. Yeah. Like this is a team that you can be excited about. And I think there's something to be said about the fact that, you know, he's the vet on this team as far as age goes. And he's, you know, nearly eight, nine years older than some of these guys like Zach Netto and Sean Owell. And I think that that's significant. And I think that him being in a good mental place is going to have a good effect on the whole club. So in terms of Trout being back. I think that he can be back this season. That's been the big question. Did you see there was a, and this happened a few months ago. And I wanted to bring it up on the show. But stuff was moving fast and furious. There's just like red light therapy machine that Trout has endorsed. And there's a quarterback in the NFL who endorsed it as well.

31:03I can't remember who it was. But it's, it's like a name, you know, it's not Joe Schmoe. And Trout endorsed it and he's been using it. And then he actually got the angels to buy one that the club bought something for the players to use. Don't tell pool. So be mad. He never got his zero gravity elliptical. Yeah. But they've been using it. And Mike Trout honestly attributes the fact that his last three weeks went so good because of this machine. Again, it's like this giant, you know, looks like a tomb or a casket. But it's like red light therapy helps your muscles like regenerate at a, a faster rate things like that. And so that's been something that he's been using. And he attributes for why he feels better out there. And he's gotten some of the other players to get in on it as well. Is it called the Bokta tank in like Star Wars? Well, they float around. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. So what it feels like, right? John, it sounds like Trout's incentivized to really get his head in the game.

32:06So to speak. Yes. And to be on the field and that he doesn't have to carry this by himself, right? And he's kind of lost the superstar status, which I think he's got a lot to prove. But he's, you know, arrogant in that. And he had that, he had that chip on his shoulder last year when the top 100 came out. And he was ranked where he was and he was like, ah, I'm going to be better than that. And, you know, barring the injury that he had to his knee, I certainly think he could have been better than that. But that's what's most significant about him running that almost 30 feet per second is that the knee issue that's bothered him for the last two years, that feels gone, that feels better. And that's, that was honestly our big concern anyway about him being in center field was how much, uh, where in Terry's putting on his body and specifically that knee where he had the meniscus tear and the repair and all of that stuff. The fact that he's running that fast is really great. My concern is, hey, do like, don't do that weird thing where guys try to stretch and get first base because that's how he got hurt last time.

33:07Right. And in the fact that he does want to, you know, go 30 feet per second down the line. That's great. Just be careful while you do it because we don't want you to reagirate that knee again. Yeah. I, I, I think trending wise and, and trends tell you like, yeah, there's some injuries and some things that happen. I mean, Mike Trout, it's about time for him to have an up and to the right trend. It's about time that his body stayed together. It's about time that he had a good season. I mean, it's been six years for crying out loud like, you know, the baseball gods, the, the real God, like somebody, somebody needs to step in here and like, give him some grace because this bro, this bro has earned it. He needs it. And we want to see him play a full season and be who he was in the past again. I go back to where he is mentally. It's just good to see him having fun and making plays in center field. And you mentioned it, Mike, when we did the takeaways, it moves Joe Adele over to right. And that's the best spot for him. Coming into the season and in preseason, we were all talking about it before they got

34:09Josh Lover. We were like, what is this outfield even going to look like? It's out and left. You know, CEO center, Adele and Wright, oh, well, maybe Adele play center field. And then they brought up Mike Trout play in center field. It was, we were both with, oh, no, not again. It solves a lot of problems. It certainly fixes a lot of things with how that outfield arrangement is going to look. Now we just need to get Josh Lowe under that red light therapy machine to fix that oblique because we can't be having more oblique issues in 2026. Let's, let's leave behind the oblique.
