Well, it's a tough time in the state of California to be the mayor of San Francisco. Because when you're the mayor of San Francisco, you have to travel around the city and evaluate just exactly how your programs are working out. Well, sometimes you have to encounter crazy homeless people and sometimes they attack. Daniel Lurry was with his security detail in the tenderloin when he saw two people just sitting out in the middle of the street. He decided that's not very safe. So he had his security officer's intervene and a fight is scuffle ensued. And one of his officers got injured. You don't say and it turns out the guy who committed the assault has a record.

2:04Are you surprised? Very. For more on what happened last week in the tenderloin, here is KPIX CBS news in the bay. Learning more about the confrontation involving San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurry's security officer and a man on the street in the tenderloin. That man has been arrested on suspicion of assault that Devon Philly joins us with a new angle shedding more light on how this whole thing started, Devon. Yeah, Liz. So Mayor Lurry was not hurt in this. It happened about six o'clock yesterday evening. He started running the other way looking for more cops. You know what? In retrospect, he should have done what Karen Bass would have done, which is look the other way and just wait for a car to hit them. Yeah, Liz. So Mayor Lurry was not hurt in this. It happened about six o'clock yesterday evening on Cedar and Larkin Street. The struggle was captured on camera.

3:05And this new video that was posted on TikTok shows the beginning of that confrontation where you can see Lurie's bodyguard as San Francisco police officer appearing to exchange some words with a man. The office was the man sitting in the middle of the street probably injecting things into his arm because doing that in the middle of the street is the safest place to do it. The officer then shoves him backward into the ground with the mayor standing just feet away. It adds more context to a previous video that was shared by Mission Local. That footage started where the two men are already struggling as the officer tries to restrain the man. Lurie is seen walking away shortly after the officer is pulled to the ground. The mayor says that he was trying to get help from a second officer. He also described what led up to the incident. I saw two individuals in the middle of a street, not on the sidewalk, but literally in the middle of a street. And I was worried about them and I was worried about this is the downside of promising to be the mayor that's going to walk every neighborhood. Well, I can tell you and we've talked about this before.

4:09And I did morning radio and I would be driving to the radio station on Lossi and a go boulevard. I can't tell you the number of times I had to play Frogger with a bunch of Bums who were hanging out in the middle of the street. Oh, it's so bad. And it's only gotten worse that you remember how members of the LA City Council were touting this nonsensical statistic that there were more traffic deaths than homicides in Los Angeles in 2024. And that's why we needed to pass measure HLA, which was the bike lane every single time you're a pair of street. Well, even Karen Bass, when she was asked about that said, well, most of that is homeless people getting run over in the middle of the night because they're in the middle of the street 100% a little different from what the streets for all people want you to think. I saw two individuals in the middle of a street, not on the sidewalk, but literally in the middle of a street. And I was worried about them and I was worried about, you know, safety of pedestrians and cars

5:10coming. So I stopped, we asked them to get up and then the incident began. I want to thank him. I want to thank my entire detail for the incredible work they do. How do you think had it, Ruffer, Daniel Larry security detail that has to walk with him through the tenderloin or Eric Garcetti security detail? Well, he wouldn't walk the city. So they spent most of their time going from cocktail party to cocktail party. Yes. But his security detail was routinely being harassed by Eric Garcetti's top advisor, Rick Jacobs. Oh, that's very true. That's very true. Rick Jacobs, I can't account for, but the only time Eric Garcetti would leave the office is when he would get on his knees for BLM. I want to thank him. I want to thank my entire detail for the incredible work they do every single day and last night.

George Gascon hadn't been the DA of San Francisco since 2020. And what do you know? Somebody that he slapped on the wrist almost tried to assault the mayor. Do a Google on YouTube. 7:16fielder for the angels in the 90s. And I think he had a little problem with cocaine. You can apply that brain to so many different things and so much of it is focused on angel stats. In fact, I think you got popped at a motel and boy in a park. So what you're saying is there's been drug problems in that ball club for a while. Yes, that's true. Made then by the former DA, George Gascon. Now, Jenkins says it hurts like the first time guests go and got a shout out and anything and so long. Oh, yeah. If you pass them in Belmont shores, make sure to remind them that he's responsible for this too. We have a listener that does that. We got some wall in the wall in these allies. George Gascon. Now, Jenkins says that her office is reviewing the evidence in yesterday's incident and that a charging decision is expected as soon as Monday. I did see the video of what occurred and again, it's frightening and we want to make

8:18sure that we are doing everything to protect not only city officials, but, but anyone. And we have to make sure again that there's accountability when people do the thing. Oh, Brock, you know that word means nothing. You have to throw them in jail. That's the word. What you need is a giant bulldozer and just shove everyone that's in the middle of the street out. Oh, I thought you were going to say into the ocean. Well, you could do that too or out of city limits. Whichever direction you want to go, we have to make sure again that there's accountability when people do the things that were done last night or just send them to the other side of the Bay Bridge. That mayor will welcome them with open arms. The second suspect was also arrested for this incident. And as for the officer in the video, Mayor Lurie says he is doing well, but did have non-life threatening ish injury used to his head. Got a little concussed, I think.

9:20Look like it. So that's the latest on what we know about the guy in the tenderloin that decided it was a good idea to assault the police officer that was Daniel Lurie's security detail. Now we also have an update for you on a man who has appeared as a booked guest on this program. You remember the guy who has an unconventional squatter removal service in the Bay area, the one with the samurai sword. Oh, yes. How could I forget that? He has been charged in San Mateo County with seven felonies for a squatter removal gone or I, okay, I know zero details about the story, but I can already tell you I'm taking his side. 10:21felony charges after he and several others allegedly attempted to clear a group of squatters from a home in San Bruno. Because of course, the DA can't do anything about the squatters. That was Suzanne Summers hometown. You know, over the weekend, it happened yet again, a home that was full of squatters in Hollywood burned to the ground. Well, that's what happens if you just let the squatters take over. The owner shared exclusive body cam footage with KTVU's Tory gains who joins us now live with more. Good evening, Tory. Good evening to you, Christina yet navigating a squatter situation can be a detra mental problem for property owners and James Jacobs. He's the owner of ASAP squatter removal. He's known for his unusual tactics, which often include bringing a katana sword along. I do love it. Show up like he man. Now those unusual tactics are under illegal microscope.

11:22A local business owner is facing seven felony charges, including burglary and false imprisonment after an attempted squatter removal gone wrong during the squatters charged with anything. Of course not, because this is California. So if you're the criminal, that's who the state has sympathy for. On the early morning of January 6th, video shows James Jacobs and his team using a battering ram to enter a property he was hired to manage in San Bruno. They did not know how many squatters might be inside. Jacobs business ASAP squatter removal brought along seven independent contractors. All were armed. Scared the daylights out of them. The danger of weapons, any time weapons are brought into a circumstance or is it danger? How do they know that the people inside didn't have their own firearms? Okay, but think about this though. They have permission from the owner to be there. If you are legally on a property with permission from the owner, it doesn't matter if you have

12:27a gun or not. It should be okay. The owner gave them permission to have a gun. The people who were there who may or may not have been armed, they were trespassing. They had no legal right to be there. The fact that these services exist tells you everything that's wrong with the state of California. It's a complete breakdown in government. Jacob says they had a plan, move in a new lease holder, but things went awry when one of the occupants threatened to shoot. So let's see, things went bad when one of the people, the squatters threatened to shoot the squatter removers. So squatter removers come in with permission from the owner, person who is illegally there threatens to shoot them and they're the ones at fault. But things went awry when one of the occupants threatened to shoot. Shortly after, video shows one of the men on Jacob's team aiming his gun in the direction

13:32of an occupants voice. Oh, that's where we went wrong. One of the security guys pointed a gun. Well, again, they didn't have a legal right to be there. They're trespassing. If you break into my house in the middle of the night and I think that you're there to do harm and I have a gun on me, I'm going to point it at you too. Voice. Come on in, guys. Come on in, guys. Come on in, guys. He's serious. How about a separate sword? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. You got that right. He's serious. How about a separate sword? Samurai sword. They mean business. Jacob's believed everyone he contracted for his team that night had security training. He was wrong. His new team member, Angel Val Rigolato, is a convicted felon. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Well, sometimes you need muscle. Sometimes you need to hire the bad guy to get other bad guys out. Now, who did Jacob's hire, Urban Alchemy?

14:36Yeah, isn't that what the city does? Don't they have a monopoly on hiring ex-cons? If you hire a security company and they bring you a two-time convicted felon, how are you going to feel? Rigolato didn't- I feel like he has a lawsuit against the security company ready to go. It sounds like it. Rigolato didn't show up in court this week on charges related to the incident. Jacob's and another contractor were charged with seven felonies each. The ASAP Squadron removal website boasts a 95% success rate. This was one of the five percent. Yeah, it does sound like this one did go sideways if they're getting sued by the homeowner. Apparently, if you're a squadron, you want to stay in there, even if the samurai sword happens, just threaten to shoot the people that are trying to evict you because the squatters have all the rights in the world in this state. Think about what message is being sent to them by how the state responds to this. Jacob says it's thanks in part to his unconventional methods, but working with independent contractors

15:42means he doesn't always have their full background. San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaff is prosecuting the case. This case where there's no training, there's weapons being brought in, then you know what? He's the hire. He's going to be held accountable. Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. How come you and your office isn't taken care of this problem? You dope because if the state sent people with badges and guns in to remove the squatters, the homeowner wouldn't have to do it. Oh, well, that process takes 10 years, John. Jacob's maintains he is innocent, but he can't be certain of all that happened that night. I think that there's probably a reasonable, I don't know what percentage, but a reasonable percentage that the claim is someone accurate. So I do have sympathy for these two squatters. Since shearing more about his unorthodox tactics, Jacob's has been called a vigilante,

16:45though he maintains all of his methods are legal. The fact that you're calling me a vigilante also is implying that I'm on the right side of justice. I like this guy. Yeah, he's right. He's right. The state just simply refuses to do certain things. And then when you complain about it or when you're left with them up in the bucket to clean up the mass, they criticize every little thing that you do. Now guys, in speaking with the DA tonight, he's hopeful that this case can be an example to any other property owners navigating a situation like this, especially if they may be considering hiring a company like ASAP. He says these things should play out in courtrooms. And as for Jacob's, he'll be back in court. So the landlord should have the property destroyed by the people living there illegally to deal with a legal process that takes years and years and years and thousands and thousands of dollars 100% that's what they believe. These things should play out in courtrooms.

There's nobody there to get there, even there about two days. So I called big calls out to all police and they went over there. They knocked in the door and they called me back. And they said they've been there at three days. They've established residency because nothing we can do about it. And what?

22:02I just had a loss. You can't get enough. We can't get enough. It's a lot. So I had a really good handyman, so I called the bill. It was February. And I was snowing and I said, Bill, go over the house, take the front door off. You did it. And they left. I love it. I love it. I think I'd be arrested if that happened, but that's it. Oh, they treat you like Jack the Ripper. Yeah. All right. I love your show. All right. Thanks for the call, sir. We appreciate it. And Randy, we have news coming from my mother's hometown of Downey, California. This is really upsetting, but a recent retiree last year was stabbed to death in Downey by a homeless person. And while the injuries were awful, what made him fatal was that when the paramedics arrived to transport him to the hospital, their ambulance got stolen by a different homeless person.

23:08Oh, no. So the family who has lost their father is luring up and suing the city of Downey for their negligence in allowing this horrific event to happen. So they're arguing that the city needs to have a representative watching the ambulance at all times to make sure that the homeless don't steal that when they're responding to an injury. Or that the city allows the homeless to loiter around the library attacking people. Because this happened at the Civic Center for more on what the family and Downey alleges here is a report from CBS LA. A family is demanding restitution from the city of Downey after their father was killed by a man living on the streets and the ambulance that was supposed to take him to the hospital was stolen.

24:11It's up so absurd on so many levels. It's really hard to believe this is reality. You would think they can't even write something like that on television, but actually in the first season of the pit, there's a whole storyline where people steal an ambulance. Oh, my. Yeah. Imposing joins us live with more on why the family is blaming the city more. Well, Leslie and Tom, the family feels the city didn't do enough to make the area safer and as a result of that, they feel that paramedics lost precious time to save their dad. Got them on the gurney. They turned around and ambulance is gone. What do you do at that point, call an Uber? The family of Ronaldo LaFonts, a father who had just retired three months earlier after working at a lab at UCI before he was killed, is putting the city of Downey unnoticed. Lead attorney Alex Galindo says they're seeking $40 million. OK, I know this isn't important, but if you get, if you're working as a scientist at UC

25:17Irvine, you can't afford to be in Orange County. Well, Downey is regarded as being a nice place to live in Eastern Los Angeles County. The fact that you said Eastern Los Angeles County is all I need to hear. They call it the Mexican Beverly Hills is putting the city of Downey unnoticed. Lead attorney Alex Galindo says they're seeking $40 million in damages from the city. They had hired a security firm to go and and service other areas, secure other areas of the city, but not their Crown Jewel, their civic center. The Fondsville is charging is I don't know if anyone would call the Downey Civic Center a Crown Jewel. They have a portals now. The Fondsville is charging his car near the Downey City Library last September when prosecutors say Giovanni Navarro and I'm yeah, again, not related to the story, but is

26:19bad of a sitting duck you think you are when you're at a gas station, charging an electric car not at your home, you are a bigger sitting duck. Well, how long does it take to charge a car? It can take depending on the brand, depending on the charger, like if the best case scenario, you can charge about a hundred miles and a half hour, worst case scenario, you're charging about 13 miles an hour. Yeah, that takes way too long for me. The Fondsville is charging his car near the Downey City Library last September when prosecutors say Giovanni Navarro and unhoused man with a criminal past. Oh, maybe we should also sue the state of California for letting this guy out. You know what? I sympathize with the family and what happened to their relatives should not have happened, but I'm not so sure it's Downey's fault. I think it's Newsom's fault because this isn't a problem that's unique to Downey.

27:21It's a problem that's all over the state of California because of the policies of the state of California. Let's say Downey was really aggressive at busting up these encampments and harassing these bombs so that they either left the city or they got thrown in jail for some infraction. You know that the state of California would come down on them like a ton of bricks. Attacked and stabbed him to death. Certainly a credible anticipation or expectation that it would be a safe place when in fact it wasn't and it was a complete colossal failure on the part of the city. Paramedics rushed to help but couldn't take him to the hospital. The paramedics couldn't transport him to the hospital because the vehicle was stolen by another homeless man. This is like an episode of the three stooges you've Larry Mow and Curly were all homeless. Tell me again how these people are just our neighbors that are down on their lock. No.

28:21No, there's zombies. Which you can't even write this stuff. I mean it was just so outrageous and so ridiculous for this to happen. He says the ambulance wasn't equipped with an anti theft system. Nicholas Demarck. Okay, that's on the paramedic company. Yeah. If you're operating a paramedic company in Los Angeles County, you have to know that could happen at any moment in time. Now I know that these are kind of difficult things to retrofit. So I have one piece of advice for all of the paramedic outfits that are throughout Los Angeles County. You know what neighborhood you're going to be driving into. You may need to be out of the driver's seat for quite a few minutes to get the guy on the gurney. Get the club. It'll only take you seconds. Definitely don't give the contract to Kia. Nicholas Demarck. Let police on a 15 mile chase in the ambulance before crashing in Alhambra and was arrested. Concerned community members held a vigil for LaFonts calling the crime and growing homelessness near the library out of control.

29:23Okay. Yeah. Also, we need to get rid of libraries. It's time. Libraries are homeless shelters. You can get every book in the world on a kid's iPad. We don't need libraries anymore. They only attract crime. Okay. Don't blame the library though because the homeless have taken over. That's not the fault of the books. That's the fault of the government for allowing it to happen because they've done the same thing to the parks. They've done the same thing to the beaches. They've done the same thing to transportation corridors. We've given up so much of our space to the homeless out of compassion, folk compassion, folk compassion. Well, nothing can bring him back. His family's attorney says the city needs to be held accountable so no other family has to endure this kind of pain. Clean up the city. I mean, the city's going to settle, but they're not going to change their behavior and the state's not going to change their behavior. No, no. They're just going to pay them off and they're going to keep doing what they're doing. Clean up the city in this area.

30:25Again, it's what's happened right in front of the Downing Library where little children come to learn to read books and study and do homework. So the city has 45 days to respond, and then after that, if there's no response, an official lawsuit will be filed, and of course, we did we shout at the city of Downing, but so far have not heard back yet, reporting live in downtown Los Angeles, Lauren Pozen, CBS LA. 32:27up on that door. Yep. Let's go to John and Longbeam. John, hello. Gentlemen, good morning. Great show. We're good afternoon. Yeah, you know, I've done a lot of work in Downey over the years. And, you know, there's some three, four, five million dollar neighborhoods in Downey. And Downey has a reputation, the police department there, of being a real, law and order, kick your butt department and they don't take any crap. And I'm really surprised that that went on right not far from where that parking structure is there. I know where that is. That's where all the really, really expensive homes start. And there's average neighborhood. You probably can't get a house there for under a million, a million and a half, but there are some literal mansions there. And I believe if I'm not mistaken in that same parking structure a couple of years ago, a Downey police officer that was getting off of work, someone tried to rob him and shot him in that same parking lot.

33:30I think you're right. I want to say I remember that happening some time ago. And it made news because that sort of thing, yeah, it happens in Los Angeles. It doesn't happen in Downey. And so that was kind of a man by its dog kind of story. That's a great town. And I'll tell you what, I've been working in neighborhoods before and had two or three police cars show up because the neighbors didn't know what my vehicle looked like and they wanted to know what I was doing there. You know, that's the kind of town you want to live in. All right. Thank you for the call. I appreciate it. Now it's not just Downey who is dealing with the homeless problem. So is the city of Oakland and one particular encampment has gotten so bad that Cal Trans is now leading on the city to do something about it. Must be an election year. Over the past week, a group of more than a dozen unhoused residents living near sixth and Webster streets in Oakland have been forced to pack up and move their things three times. I feel less than human sometimes because it's kind of humiliating and degrading when you come here and you see the bulldogs are just pushing everything that you own right into this. You could go somewhere else. Actually, he probably can't. I think Oakland's the last stop on the subway. Got to write over here. Cal Trans confirms it began its Oakland Alameda access project in the area this week requiring the encampment to be cleared. Safiya Bhaskarang advocate that the sound of the bulldozer knocking over all the tents. I think it was advocates for the unhoused community in Oakland. I don't understand. I mean, I understand that news organizations want to sound that they're fair and unbiased. But whenever you're doing a story about the homeless in Oakland, San Francisco or San

35:35Jose, you do not need to interview an advocate for the homeless. Those people are grifters. And here's the insult to the injury. We're probably paying their salary to through some kind of government grant. I'm advocates for the unhoused community in Oakland. Cal Trans told them to move off of Cal Trans property. The city told them to move off of city property. It's good. That's what should be done. What should be done? I don't want to be a stickler, but the woman with schizophrenia probably has many names. Is it really hard for me to do the suffering? Residents say it is difficult to pick themselves up every time they are kicked out of an area adding that the city outreach workers who stopped by Thursday were not helpful.
