Daily Red: Richard Hughes is GONE! Good Riddance or Goodbye?

We don't even just have to reflect on a game that I've already done on an over podcast. We have the departure of Richard Hughes to talk about everyone. Now I've titled the show Good to Buy Your Good Riddens. It's a really strange situation isn't it? Because you look Richard Hughes, he obviously joined the club at such a momentous time in the, we were in the process of replacing the club. He was obviously a part of that with Edward's coming back. And he was made the sporting director. And obviously first things goes quite well. We win a Premier League.

1:02We hire the right man in our own slot. Everything seems to be going peachy. There's not loads of transfers. Obviously we only get key years and I'm a dash really that first summer. Don't we obviously mama dash really joined the year later. But we don't know how much he actually does behind the scenes. Do we? In that first year, he gets the new deals done for Salah for Van Dyke off the top of my head. Then the next summer comes along. And we'll go through this properly on the show so don't worry. I'll bring it up all on screen. But then we kind of go bit mad, don't we? And this is where this is where I think maybe the criticism starts. We go a bit. Unliver pool, maybe. But aren't he slot second season goes that wrong? I think then it starts to become questions about Richard Hughes, whether we hired the right man, whether we're doing the right processes. And then this summer. The one that's just gone. I think this is where the criticism just ramped up because we all knew he was going.

2:08Didn't we all that report came out two thirds of the way through last season, didn't it? And then the summer we've just had. Look, I think we're all quite happy with the players we've actually bought. There is just some gaping holes. In the squad, which will come on to in a sec, but yeah, we'll go through we'll go through his statement. We'll go through the club statement and we'll go through maybe have a look at who's going to replace him have a bit little look at his legacy. It a bit more fine detail, but let me get his statement up on screen and feel free everyone in chat to put to type comments. I'll put them on screen and I'll have a chat about them. But let's get through his statement first. So from the Liverpool website, Liverpool FC can confirm Richard Hughes a step down a sporting director. Hughes who moved to Anfield from AFC, born within June 2024, departs with the best wishes of everyone at LFC having informed the club's ownership of his desire to seek a fresh challenge. During his tenure, we won our 20th league title in 2024, 25 and achieved champions equalification in the following season.

3:15Speaking on behalf of the Red Zownership Fenwaire Sports Group, Mike Goal and Frank Hughes for his contribution, saying, Richard joined us at the start of a period of change, embracing that responsibility by leading our football operations department and overseeing recruitment, whilst also providing valuable support to our coaching staff. The results we achieved in these areas during this period are a testament to his contribution. Nevertheless, we respect Richard's life choices and wish him and his family well in their next venture. Hughes said, first and foremost, I would like to reiterate that I said on put my arrival, it was as being source of great pride to have been given the opportunity to serve this incredible and unique institution. That is something I will always be grateful for. My appreciation extends to ownership for their support and leadership to club staff at all levels who give so much to make Liverpool FC what it is. To the players who make such an enormous contribution and to the fans who support the team in great numbers, whenever and wherever games take place, I will always follow and support the club with great affection and I wish everyone involved nothing but success for this season and beyond.

4:21The process of a point and success is underway and the outcome will be confirmed in due course. Yes, quite a standard statement isn't it? We have not done the whole Trent thing where we have done like one sentence, was it Trent? There might have been a couple of others isn't it? Let's have a look at some of them. Abdi says here, big up mate. The last he has gone and Liverpool are rising again, salute mate from LFC, Fan Amsterdam from the Netherlands, big up the Netherlands. We have a lot of people who are going to be in the world, so we can like the dutch again. Fantastic. We did have some before the show actually started. Steve and D there saying good he's gone. Good riddance by saying what he hear, nowhere near good enough, nowhere near enough. What he continued, destroyer of the club squad, his parting shot was trying to flog dacopo to arrival. Does it get any more ludicrous in replacing with an injured player who's out until November? Great strategy.

5:24Yeah, as I said it a lot of it is, it's a lot of mixed feelings but I think it's mostly in the negative at the minute because that's certainly the fresher period. We're in, aren't we as I said in the intro a bit there. As Robbie says, who are squad planning, the plot planning, contract management, some dodgy recruitment decisions weaker than when he arrived. To be fair, I think weaker than when he arrived, I think it was always going to be tough that because we're our star players towards the end of the cloppy were more salad. My Mike's in the way, my hander with more salad, Van Dyke, Alison, Robo Trent, they were the probably the hangover's D as probably went up a level. He had a weird one, didn't he? Because he had a first great half year under clop, then he had the injury and the situation with his family, didn't he?

6:24So we do, I think the main hangovers are those five that I mentioned, aren't we? And then you'd probably say Dom, the callister and probably someone very obvious I'm forgetting. But I think I think the transition from clop to slot went really well because we didn't make loads of changes. We only basically brought in keyers of that first year. That probably says more about clop than he was in slot. I'd probably say, because I think what clop goes to like an 82 point scene with that side and we had loads of injuries, didn't we? And then slot, we had less injuries and we just kind of took the league by storm, didn't we? But I think if we start with the good for Richard Hughes, look, he brought in slot, which at the moment sounds like a negative because last season was probably one of the worst seasons in my lifetime, if not the worst season, because we were meant to be good and we were going to awful. But he got us a title with Annie slot, Annie slot was the right guy at the right time for one season. He was obviously not the right guy long term, but we got a we got a Premier League title out of it.

7:35So that is obviously a success regardless what happened last season. Let's bring up his transfers, because that's probably the best way we can actually judge a director of football, because I'm not going to say I don't know if he hired Julie and ward, I don't know if he hired Mark has, who's obviously done great jobs with, with the Academy signings and is it Matt newbury, who does that as well. So I don't obviously we don't know his exact role, but transfers we do know, so I've got them on screen now. So we start with 24 25, we bring in Mama Dash, really, who people don't like. We bring in keyers who people do like, but he's probably not good enough and we can't get rid of him now. And then to purchase, I think Vanderberg and Cavalier for quite close to 50 millions, not that bad to be fair. I don't think that's too bad. I think Van Nenberg's gone on to have a really prove himself as a really dependable good Premier League defender and Cavaliers to suddenly have a few injuries there.

8:38But 25 26, this is where we kind of go off the rails a bit, don't we? In terms of what we were as Liverpool, where if you think of Liverpool up there, peak, we had club, obviously, but it's probably Edward's first term where he was actually the sport and director. And we could find those gems, your more sellers, your miners and look, they were big ish money for the time, like 35 and 40, mellow thinking each of them were. But we weren't, it's not 145, it's not 125 is it not 95 or a critique, just still massive money. But this is where we went a bit rogue. I think, I think we did need to change some of these players because look, well, the departure is probably where we best look starting off in this one. I think selling Lewis Dias was 70 million was a good deal from Liverpool. We just replaced him. I think we got a better player in Florian Vert which sounds stupid because Dias scored, what, how other than he goes, he scored last season.

9:42But he's not a replacement in what Dias brought to Liverpool. Dias brought pace and running in behind as did the fella below him there in this list of Darwin Nunes. Well, selling Darwin Nunes for 53 million euros is a fantastic deal considering Darwin's time at the club. So I don't mind the outso far. 1s of a 35, that's fine. I think if it was to a Premier League club, I reckon we would have got more, but sometimes we do fibres to our players. Ben Doerck at the time, Ben Ganondork, no, 23 million euros, that thing, that's all right. I think I like the 14 million euros. That's very cheap considering how good he is now and how good he was then, but he had a year left on his deal. And Brentford, again, we probably, we probably could have got more money, but Brentford was a very good move for him. Trent for 10 million, obviously, that's basically on a free isn't it? Me only got, we only got that money because they needed him for the club world cup.

10:44They're probably the negatives that stand out aren't they? We let Trent go on a free, we let Eboo go on a free. Now look, Trent, it's annoying because we've not really replaced Trent, have we? And that's another criticism will come on to in a sec. But we've not replaced Trent, who is impossible to replace like for like, obviously, but we haven't really tried. And Eboo, that will come on in a sec. It just kind of there to play as we took us for a ride under Richard Hughes. And it hopefully the next guy, which we'll probably finish on as we have three names to look at. They're probably the hard ones that are a bit of an issue. Trent is talented. I know he's a right back, but for for a best probably the most talented right back in football history, we probably, if we were going to sell him, we should have at least, at least got like 80 million. Didn't it? It's just, but to get 10 for him, which is basically a glorified free is not really that good. And Eboo, albeit he was shocking last season.

11:50Like if you look at the money, like say it a reho, for example, we've got a 45 to 50 million pound option on him. We could have easily got that money for Eboo. So yeah, we're probably missing out on a shed load of money there for the players we've sold Jones will talk about on an a sec. It's a strange one. But in terms of the players we brought in in in 2526, Ezek 145 million euros, Florian votes 125 million euros Hugo, I could take it 95 million euros. Me lost Kirk as 46, 47 basically 47 million euros. Frimpong 40 million euros. Good Lord. Was it that high? Good Lord. But then there's some good Leoni 30 million euros. I'm in peshy two million euros. That's fine. Freddie Woodman who did the money, but he's free. So he's fine. It's it's it's a mixed bag isn't it? And look, look, I think long term that window might look a lot better for Richard Hughes than it does right now. Look, his acts obviously started this season really well.

12:58He was all for the against Newcastle, but you got a goal against forest and he was excellent last night. Florian votes, probably some more question marks there. I'm seeing quite a bit of criticism about him after last night. I thought it was all right. It was just overplayers stood out around him. I think it's. It's a much more working progress with words because look, he's look, he's a lot younger and he's he did come from the Bundesliga. And as we know. The Bundesliga is where frauds come from. So we need we need to be patient with votes, which is dumb for 125 million euros pound player. Hugo, I could take it 95 million euros. Look, it's a lot of money, but Hugo was probably our second best player last year last season after dawn trying to think would Hugo be second? I think he was. So I think Hugo's fine for money. It's obviously just how he recovers from that from that injury. Kirkers, I think that deal will be all right eventually. Friampong will never say in that money again. I mean, and Leon, I think we could probably sell him tomorrow and probably double our money just on that one self hunting game alone.

14:10Let's have a look at some comments before we go on to next there this year's this summer's and transfers. I should say. Beano says don't do replicate his alchemy tricks on the South Coast all the pay for mediocrity at Anfield. Yeah, it's hard to argue with that this at this time, but as I said, going through the summer just I think they will improve and I think it will show a bit more. Pleasantly for Hughes in the long term, but yeah, last season was rough. Prop Hansers, damn Hughes to hell, but Ash, we did get a title under and Don Mills can't will I get that on screen with a swear in there? We'll I'll bleep it out. Hughes can go scam another club off. Yeah, look, there is strong feelings about him. The real years. But let's get into this last summer then and then we can have a big reflective moment. Can't we? So let's do the ins and that we'll do them both because it's kind of I've got a problem with both to be fair.

15:14So we brought in Bradley Park, a bar call of her 125 million euro Jeremy Jackay 63 million euro. Victor Moonos 40 million euro Luca Bergman's 33 million euro. I'm going to say it's not Dylan, but I'm going to go with Dylan Dylan and guessing 5 million euro. If you're any and duckware, 3 million euro Ronald Arreho in the loan with the option that I mentioned earlier and Calvin Ram, well, Calvin Ram is a kid. Why is he an arrival? He's not come back as he, but Calvin Ram is there for some stupid reason. Departures, Curtis Jones 30 million euro, Stefan Bassett, it's one and a 1.2. Rob Olgon for a free e-book on for a free. Most Salah gone for a free. We'll talk about that. That's a bit of a weird one. And then a lot of young lads have left on loan and couple of gone on a free event. Oh, I don't mind you swearing, Donna. I just don't think I should get it. I don't think I can get it on screen. I might be demonetized or this video, not the channel. But yeah, I'll always read out the sentiments.

16:20So this summer, look, we've done a million shows talking about this summer. Can we be asked doing another one? But look, I think the players we bought are all good and I think we're all really excited. What Bradley Bakola can bring to the team. Jacque started to season excellently. Victor Moonos looks like one of those old school Liverpool signings, doesn't he? Like 40 million. I know it was a release clause, so you probably would have cost a bit more. If that wasn't the case, but we went in there. We got in that's very cheap in that market, especially any started to season excellently. Luca Bergman's God, I don't know, but Geng is where good goalkeepers go for come from. So we'll probably be fine with that one. And the young lad's look and Duckwell looks special, doesn't he? But it's Mark has a new breeze and it's that get credited with the younger signing. So who knows with them? But he was as a part of that. Obviously, the parches look, Curtis Jones for email. He kind of has had us over a barrel, didn't he? It was rumored forest. We're interested and we probably could have got more money from forest. But why would you go to not in forest when you could go to into my lamp.

17:29So yeah, we kind of just got screwed over there. That is probably a criticism that we didn't deal with his contract one way or the other the season previous. As I watch new castle equal eyes in the background just now. Stefan don't mind that we need that lad just needs to get his kind of career back on track. Don't need robber on a free. I think that one's fine. I think that one's fine. I think robber. It was probably time he was on high wages and look, we spent a lot of money on Kirk as we needed Kirk has to be undisputed number one. Didn't we? I'm going to free I mentioned that earlier. Look, he had he had us over a barrel. He was seemingly going to sign and then real mature to give him 400 grand a week to sit on the bench, which is fantastic. So good look them at most sell as a weird one is in each up and listeners later on. Because when when I think he agreed we agreed to basically let him offer you on his contract. I think a lot of us were thinking, okay, you probably go to.

18:31I don't know you there you there will link the little bit was in the already seem a lot of something like that or even like basal owner or real. If they're well reels probably a bad one because they've got a million wingers haven't. But I think a lot of us were thinking, okay, we're giving up his transfer fee so he can go on and be a top level club. He can go to top level club and have a new experience. Trabs on spa put a bid in for Rich Allison. They had money to spend on crap like that. So to let him go for free to go to Turkey who are splashing the cash is really weird. And look, I'm not going to begrudge more salad going to Turkey. It seems to very really interesting league this summer in recent times as well. We've seen the lads go there. I'm not begrudging salad going there just the fact like could we have got 20 million out of trubs on spa probably if not more. But it's not a big bug bear. It's just a weird situation isn't it.

19:31But yeah, in the child does look like there's a lot of negativity towards Hughes and look I'm probably edging that way as well. Like last year was one of the most miserable watching experiences of football I've seen and he was a big part of that. He could have got rid of Annie's lot earlier than he did. Ultimately, we did get fifth by the just so we did get the goal, which was the goal after August because we all knew we were terrible after that. But look, he was cowardly. He didn't suck you. He didn't suck slot when he probably should have. He didn't deal with all the contract situations. He dealt with the big ones in terms of van Dyke and salad, but Ibu we kind of let go let go on a free trend. Trent was there. Trent was probably more on. Clop in the previous lad that's a to be fair.

20:34Jones, I probably put that on him as well, but Jones, it looked like he fell out with the manager. And we dealt with Graven Burke and Dom's contract. But look, I think their positives. Grave may be more questionable now. It's a lot of money, but he did get he has a game contract to Gakpo, Graven Burke and Dom's a boss light. You may not read all those free players, but I'm sick of letting people go on a free to be honest. If we have to overpay them, Saudi Arabia exists now. And as Green says there in the chat, is it possible Hughes take the verse that's silly that silly talking about the verse, but our previous sporting director is going to Saudi. He can buy these lads off us now. So I don't mind overpaying on these contracts because look, we've lost so many stupid people on a free. Like maybe we get stuck with them, but at least we have that.

21:34Look, if Dom doesn't work out as a central midfield, there'll be millions of clubs trying to sign Dom. And as Dave Hendrick says, Graven Burke to Turkey 2027 or whatever he says. But look, we're protecting value and that's the least of it. But yeah, I mean, if I'm going for an overall reflection, it's certainly a mixed time, but the long, the certainly the longer it's got on the worse it's got this summer was a mess. There's massive holes in the squad as I said, right back. I mean, might be filled by a railroad to be fair. But it was an obvious need like all of us knew. Friend Bonkon be a right back and waiting for Connor Bradley who we don't know when will be fit. How long he'll be fit for it's it's really strange isn't it? And the midfield look, I'm all for giving Dom a chance in this new position. I thought it was good last night. But we need someone to do a tackle in there, don't we?

22:38Let's go through some of your comments. At least with Erola money will come in throughout throughout the Champions League is all placed out injury injured. Yeah, I think I think well, it'd be hard to do worse in the Champions League to be honest. What is it? Round of 16 and the quarter finals. Did we do under slot and went up to the same team twice? I think quarter finals should be a bear should be the bearer's to minimums for us to be honest. Hughes was terrible as said by rep the red there. Hughes was on FSG payroll, not the club that has to be established. He was employed by them. Well, he is. Yeah, everyone's on their payroll. Everyone at the clubs on FSG payroll. That's how it works. So it's really FSG out. I thought we move past this as a fan base. Look, there is clear frustrations with FSG.

23:40And the risk of verseness, I think it read it's ugly head again this summer. I think it did. I think it. I think we more at words. Good. I think the risk of verse annoying thing about FSG came back this summer because we I think more chatter basically said we could have spent like another 200 on million without. Without being near the squad cost ratio or whatever it's called now. So the fact that we didn't address two massive holes in the starting 11 and look at squad is very young on the bench. We could have. We could have easily done that and not even worried about. Look, I know some people say we didn't have a non homegrown spot, but we could have not registered Hugo for the first half of the season. We could have paid off key years of contract. We could pay off endos contract. But I doubt these owners want to be doing that.

24:42I think we did see that risk of verseness come back from FSG. But we do have the Amazon Lads coming in now to well Amazon and Bati. What they called 1892. Is that what they called? So yeah, I think. I think hopefully them bring coming in brings more money and we can then to it. I don't even think it's risks. I think it's just not. I think filling gaps in the first teams just what normal football teams do. I don't even think it's risk of versus just stupid. Yeah, so for me Richard Hughes, I think it was the correct decision. Maybe you would have done better if you were staying around because obviously I mean, if you're one foot out of a job, could you be asked? We did. Yeah. But yeah, definitely a mixed time. I think the success of him will only be told in time because as as Green says there in the chat last summer turned to be signing flocks. Look, if they all have a good season this year, we're all going to look at Hughes and say 2526 summer was better than we thought.

25:48And then we'll put it down to Arnie slot. That that was it. So I think at this at this minute, he was pretty bad, but it could turn the other cheek in a year, in two years. But yeah, I think only time will tell in terms of replacements then. If I get the correct screen on share this tab, howdy ho. So I'm on this is an field who are really good at the all the writing. 26:52Look, it's a strange one because how the hell do I know as a random person on a podcast? What a good, it makes a good director of football. Julian Ward, we've had he seemingly struggled with the power struggle with the urban clock, didn't he? But he did get that more seller contract done, which was massive at the time. Pedro Marquez has done an excellent job. So far, hasn't he? They think everyone and everyone's in agreement that the young signings have been excellent in recent years for Liverpool, since he's come into the club. Can does that translate well into buying established stars for the first team and running that? Can he do both jobs? Who knows? David would find the David would find the weird one is he costs he came with Edwards in the first spell. And I think he was head of scouting. I think he was. I'm sure I read that on Twitter earlier on. We were the best scouting team in obviously in in situ with our analytics and stats and stuff like that.

27:59He was in situ with that. So if he was head of scouting or whatever his role was. That's when we were the best run run club in the world. So if he can then take the top job and that translates again. More for that, but he's been the assistant to Julie to Julie more to Richard Hughes. I think would find probably makes more sense. He obviously came back with Edwards. He's still at the club now. There must be a reason for that. He could probably go to another club easily and get get a director of football or a sport and director, director job. But he's still here. Maybe that changes in the short term. He might he might fancy a new new scenery or whatever. I'd I'd guess David Woodfein's been been. I'd for the job for a while now. He's been at the club twice. So like look, I as I said, I do the hell knows about what how good David would find would be as a sporting director, but.

29:00We all we've known for ages that Richard Hughes is leaving. So the fact that we didn't just walk him on garden and leave and then just get someone externally. Yes, that means someone's getting promoted. I'd and I'd guess David Woodfein. I did see an article earlier on. I haven't got it prepped to show on screen. Unfortunately. That I think it was Paul Joey. So that said we could hire someone externally. Look, I. Could we go back to Bournemouth and get to the Thiago Pinto. They've. Recruited really well in recent times. Who else does really good. Signings bright and but we've seen how that translates at Chelsea. Doesn't it there a mess. I wouldn't trust that. I can't remember the last name from PSG. Maybe him. I know he's one of the biggest reputation ones. But look, I do think it'll be someone promoted within. I think I just make sense. I think they'll know how we operate as a football club.

30:03But with the new owners coming in, will they want to make a splash and get some on these more established at buying big names. Maybe. Maybe. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. Well, like I think it'll probably the way I think it'll go because we know Mike God and wanted to take a step back for a little while. I think he's wanted to take a step back. That's why we brought Edwards back. I think Edward was the golden replacement rather than bringing him back to be the sporting director. So I think we'll want. I think by the reports that Batty has been working close with Mike God and I think we're going to see Batty have become our. Is he vice chairman? I think he's vice chairman, but I think he's basically going to be the one who runs the club. Then this lad will come in. Let's say David would find I think he'll come in and he'll just handle the actual Liverpool day and then batty roll run the entire club. So I think that's how I think that's the idea. I think that'll be the idea. So you'll have the new odds there with Batty.

31:09Bezos has probably never done what a Liverpool is to be honest. But it is interesting. It is interesting. Maybe devil no more on Monday. How the inner workings will work with a market is our Julian Ward or a wood fine. So I'll leave that to him on Monday. But yeah, yeah, how long have I been going about 30 minutes? Anything I'll get some things on chat. But if there's anything else we need to bring up. I mean the game yesterday. I was obviously on I was the host on post Matt Ross. I won't do too much of that. Dom says, uh, that's just need to see the midfield link to unlock him. He's great. Yeah, I'd agree. I'd agree. I think we need to see Mac and Dom player there. I think they were promising last night. Um, I think that's and Don got in each of us way a lot less. I think they worked quite well in tandem when when Don went forward. So I think there is promise that look it was only it switch. I think we do have to stress that it was only it switch. But it's which do have a good midfield like Palacios has obviously been very good in the Bundesliga.

32:14And Sassaloo kitchen's been very good. Very good to strong word there guy has been decent in the Premier League for years now. So, um, and then C. So's really exciting. So I think we dealt with their midfield midfield quite well. Um, Abdi says they're using slot mess Liverpool last season. Yeah, last season. Look, I'd probably put more on slot considering. Look, I say this as a fat person. What were we doing in training like I me me hello, I looked fitter than some of our players last season. Like look at the difference in Mac already. Look at him chasing down in C. So last season last night. Excuse me. If that was last season, Mac would have fell over. He might have died. He's crazy. And genuinely before all of what we were doing last season. Um, really hope we go outside for his replacement time for new thinking and new broom. It's an interesting one look at it might be one if I'll do a bit of research tonight or tomorrow and I'll try and come up with some names for tomorrow short unless some news breaks and we'll go through them.

33:21Um, but let's get going through these why not save me doing other work. Probably we can get a good CDM and my right flank player for the next transfer. Yeah, I think I think that's the next plan, Abdi. I think we've got. Look, we linked with Camaro, we linked with Minter still aren't we. So I think they'll probably be the next two names through the door. Right back. Let's assign a rail on just keep them there and buy a cent of back. That'd be sitting up. Would that be silly. I mean, a rail was very good. The last night to be fair. Let's see how it goes in January. But a rail might be we might be going full-astling having a center back at right back. Who knows. Um, don't that going for back all the first before securing CDM right back right wing says everything about FSG and who's keeping slot that long more seller the list of crimes is very long. Look, I don't think we obviously wanted to monitor he was the he was the first choice for right wing. And I don't know if that meant we wouldn't have got back all the we obviously had money to spend.

34:23But I think we going into this summer. I don't think we expected back all that and deamondee what did deamondee cost in the end about 120 if everything's hit that would have been nearly 250 million on two players there. But look if you're asking me. Would I have rather a deamondee or back all that I'm taking back all over the week. I think he's the better age for it. He was 23. I think no, he's just turned 24. That's where we used to buy players and they just boom. They'd be the best player in their position straight away. So I take back all over deamondee.
