Daily Devo | The Man Born Blind (John 9:1-12)

Why does God allow injustice and suffering? One intuitive but mistaken approach is to blame the victim. This is the assumption of Jesus' disciples when they see a man born blind. If the man deserved his suffering, then there is no injustice to explain. Jesus gives another perspective. What Jesus sees in the man's suffering is not an opportunity to blame anyone. Rather, Jesus opens our eyes to the opportunity for God's grace and power.

When we see injustice, we can be tempted to blame the victim to explain away apparent injustice. Jesus instead sees an opportunity for God to be glorified.

- Think about your own experience of suffering and injustice. When you see people suffering around you, what are some of the ways you (perhaps silently) assign blame (to people or to God)?

- How might you see people, yourself, and God differently if you instead looked (and worked and prayed) for an opportunity for God's power and grace to be revealed?
