Crufts: World's Biggest Dog Show Kicks Off

0:00On March 5, Cruffs, the world's biggest dog show, kicked off Thursday at the NEC in Birmingham and runs for four days. More than 150,000 visitors are expected, with thousands of dogs competing for the top prize of Best in Show. Overseas entries hit a record high this year, including nearly 500 from France alone. The event started back in 1891, founded by Charles Crufft at the Royal Agricultural Hall in London, drawing over 2,000 dogs right away. Crufft got a start selling dog food before organizing shows, and it grew fast, hitting 10,000 entries by 1936. Over the decades, Cruffs added new features, like obedience trials in the 1950s, and welcomed crossbreeds for the first time. It moved from London to the NEC in 1991 to handle the crowds, and has stuck their sense, expanding to four days as popularity soared. Recent winners include an Australian shepherd named Viking in 2024, and a four-year-old whippet called Miuca from Italy in 20.
