0:00You're listening to C103's Cork Today podcast phone and text lines are currently closed and a very good Friday morning to you as we welcome you along to the program We've got Married taking your calls this morning anything you want to share with us would love to hear from you 0818 103103 and of course today marks 25 years since September 11th 2001 a day that changed the world forever as commemorations take place across the globe We're looking closely at the deep poignant connections between that tragedy and Ireland out of the nearly 3000 people who lost their lives in the twin towers on this day roughly one third identified as having Irish American heritage joining me on the program this morning is Irish independence other and correspondent Ralph Regal who's been reporting on the powerful personal stories and local memorials marking this 25 year milestone

1:01a Ralph good morning you're welcome to the program Good morning Patricia Now your coverage highlighted that around 1000 of the 2,977 victims at the twin towers had Irish American roots Do you think there's one of the reasons why the tragedy felt so distinctly across both sides of the Atlantic? I think so Patricia yeah I mean if you look at the figures there were 2,977 people died in the tragedy 7 in the twin towers were born in Ireland 18 and had very strong Irish connections that either studied here lived here or had moved from Ireland to the states but of the 2,977 one in three identified as Irish American and I think it underlines I can't think of any family in Ireland that doesn't know someone or have a relative or a friend or a connection

2:01to the United States and I think particularly New York because and you know I say this as an Irish American kind of family myself my sisters in the States my dad was born in New York so we'd have a lot of connections you know Boston New York Chicago Philadelphia they were the main you know arrival points for Irish people so there's a connection that dates back my god I'd say two centuries possibly you know even longer in terms of the connection with that part of the world and it was the human stories I mean one of the things that strikes me is you know everyone is saying this morning do you remember where you were and I think every single person remembers where they were when they heard the news I was actually coming out of Skiburine district court believe Ian Bailey was up before the Skiburine district court we came out of court and it was just about to head home after lunch and the word broke that there had been a plane struck the twin towers and initially the confusion people thought it was an accident

3:02famously during World War II a plane actually flew into the Empire State Building but the planes were much smaller than there was there were several people killed there was two or three floors of the Empire State Building Damage but it didn't do catastrophic damage whereas this time when the second plane hit everyone knew that this was no accident and my abiding memory I arrived home that night we were watching the news in a horror people couldn't believe what they were actually seeing and my boss rang me and said we have a query there's a person very worried about a relative will you have a chat with them so I ended up talking to this lady and she was very worried about a cousin so on her behalf I ended up bringing their lines and making check phone calls and very quickly I realized that there was a problem that this person it sounded to me like they were very much on one of the planes and it turned out that that was a cousin of Ruth Clifford McCourt and the following day September the 12th myself and Barry Roach from the Irish Times we were the first journalists in the Clifford family home as they were trying to come to terms with

4:05the realization of what had happened and it's always been you know there's so many horrific stories but I think we're all forged by our own experiences and you know just that the level of tragedy involved in that here was a you know a 45-year-old woman she was taking her four-year-old daughter Juliana on a surprise trip to Disneyland she was traveling with her her friend page Hackel they almost missed the first they missed one flight and got on United Flight 175 they almost missed that flight had they missed that flight you know Ruth Clifford McCourt would be 70 years old today Juliana would be 29 but they made it on board and the astonishing and you know you couldn't make this up the plane the first plane that hit the American Airlines Flight 11 that hit one the first tower and the debris from that fell onto the concourse at the foot of the world trade centers and Ruth's brother Ronnie who was an architect living in New Jersey happened to be in

5:06a hotel lobby and he ran out to help a woman that he actually saw on fire she'd been doused in burning jet fuel and he helped this lady Ginny Ann Mateo and she suffered horrific burns but Ronnie emerged as one of the heroes that he was helping save this woman and when the second plane hit the towers he had to help drag this woman to safety that they were afraid people on the ground would be further injured and he didn't realize that the second plane that hit the towers was carrying his sister and his little niece and the family in Ireland initially were worried for Ronnie because they knew he worked in New York they never worry initially worried about Ruth because they thought was she's in Boston not realizing that she was on one of the hijack planes that had actually struck the towers and it is dreadful and you know the story Patricia I've been to you know I was at ground zero I think three years later and I've been at the memorial a couple of times over the years and it's a very moving thing and every time I go and look

6:11at what they call know the one world trade center and the 9-11 museum and the 9-11 memorial this kind of sunken fountain that has all of the names I think of Ruth Clever at McCourt and her little girl Juliana and it's I think we can only equate tragedies we identify with them because we put a human face on them and for me the tragedy has always been what the Cleford family had gone through in terms of that awful day and and I know that her roots husband David McCourt who passed away in 2013 he was laid to rest beside his wife and daughter in St. Fimberg's cemetery in in Cork I mean just showing us as well how difficult it is for the surviving family members to ever really find closure yeah and I always spare a thought for the people that had to deal with the aftermath I mean you can imagine there were 343 firemen died that day and you know the courage of you know you have images of people fleeing for their lives out of these burning towers

7:14imagine the courage of the policemen and the firemen and the paramedics that ran into those buildings you know we've heard the stories of Father Michael Judge this morning he was the first certified victim of 9-11 again the Irish connection he was the son of Leetram immigrants was very proud of his Irish roots and it has always been involved in Irish associations and he ran into the towers and the last person he spoke to before running into the towers was the New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and you know the people that in the weeks and months and almost years afterwards imagined the people that had to help clean the scene process the scene look for human remains I mean it was nine months after the tragedy that the remains of Ruth Clifford McCourt were located and identified and prepared for for for for being brought back to Ireland it was three months after that that the remains of her little daughter were located and identified and there was a very moving piece

8:17on by your colleague Paul Bern this morning with Mark Clifford of course who is an Irish-based brother of Ruth and Ronnie and he spoke of you know the emotion that her wallet was recovered and her wallet despite what it had gone through was remarkably intact and how emotional it was for the family to have this kind of reminder of their beloved sister and niece and what that wallet must have gone through in those seconds and to be returned to the family and you know you can't understate the level of impact that it had on people in New York and on the Irish American community if you walk around New York anyone's the holidays there if you go to any fire station you'll see memorials and you know tributes to the firemen that died the policeman that died and again another Irish connection you know Kathleen Coit Murphy she was originally from a cork nurse she'd worked for almost 40 years in Lennox Hill Hospital in New York she was a good friend

9:18with a lot of the firemen police officers chaplains that had died in 9-11 and she decided to create a special memorial for them so just outside Kinsale she bought a plotterland and planted 343 trees in memory of every single fireman who died that day and I'd encourage anyone who's never been there it's worth going there's photographs of the firemen you could go onto the website there's an interactive connection between the memorial and the stories of the firemen that died I mean I was very touched by one fireman he was playing golf in New Jersey and he saw the plane strike he physically dropped his golf club on the course ran got a friend to drive him to his fire station even though he was off duty got kitted up and ran into the towers to try and help and he did that because his sister was working in the World Trade Center and in you know the the the the poignancy of it she survived he died goodness me goodness me and we and we've seen FDNY members I mean Captain

10:27Tom Keneen who's roots are in Kerry they've traveled to Ireland over the years to deliver o'rations there really is that strong bond isn't there between first responders in New York and communities particularly here in Munster yeah very much so and it's it's acknowledged and it's never forgotten I mean the number of Irish fire stations you know the Guardian the efforts that people went to hear to commemorate um you know fallen officers are fallen comrades in the the the the 9-11 tragedy and that mattered because I think at its weakest moment and at its most vulnerable moment I think New York remembers those who stood by them and what happened that day has never been forgotten I mean you've hear you'll hear lots of people throw today talking about the fact that the world changed that day the world has never really been the same and I think anyone who goes to New York if you go to um that part of Manhattan and you look at the one world trade center that that that this you know the the skyscraper that was erected on the site if you go to the 9-11

11:31museum if you stand by the the memorial fountain to the victims with the name of every single victim is commemorated on that you really do get a scale of just what an appalling tragedy this was and how it it's still a visible scar on the city and I think it's something that New York will never forget and finally I mean looking at the 25th anniversary commemorations at ground zero today we know all of the living US presidents are attending with the exception of the sitting president Donald Trump is going to be at the Pentagon describe to me rather what you think the atmosphere will be like in a US and particularly a ground zero as we reach this quarter of a century mark I think it'll be very somber and Patricia I think that a lot of people will focus on the fact that we remember those who died that day but I think we should never lose sight of the fact that how many people you know were desperately injured and died in the weeks and months and years afterwards

12:33and of course what's really come out in the last couple of years is the fact that you know how many people you know inhaled that toxic dust from the collapse of the towers and ended up with very serious respiratory conditions cancers and you know again I think we can only identify with these things through human experience and you know that day Ronnie Clifford you know he risked his own life to run out onto the concourse to try and help people that were very very badly injured and you know he ran out he saw this woman that was literally on fire she'd been doused a computer programmer called Jenny Ann Mateo she was 40 years old she'd been doused in burning jet fuel and he ran to help her he dragged her to safety he was dragging her to safety when the plane carrying his own sister and the second plane struck the towers and you know she was very upset very distressed you can imagine the scene and to try and help her he helped he started reciting the Lord's Prayer and as she was being loaded into the ambulance he leaned over her and said you know

13:37you'll be okay he was saying the Lord's Prayer he said you've gotten through this 41 she suffered horrendous third degree burns she was taken to a specialist burn you see him in a New York hospital and and 40 days later she died oh my goodness okay listen uh rather for really appreciate you taking time out to talk to us today thank you thank you so much for that thanks for too good morning and 25 years on you know there is a whole generation that has grown up with no direct memory of a 9-11 that's what I think memorials like the one that rav spoke about there the treeland gardening can say and even us talking about it I think it really helps to make sure that the stories and the names of those that died that they will be remembered particularly for future generations we're asking people today to share their memories of where they were on this day 25 years ago where were you it's one of those moments that will stay with us for the rest of our lives where we were when we heard about 9-11 John in Malice's petition 9-11 25 years ago today

14:37myself and my wife were actually on a cruise we were in Beirut on this day 25 years ago as the ship was leaving port I saw it on the television but obviously it was in Arabic so there was no English translation sourcing a fellow passenger if you could explain what had happened couldn't believe it we then went on to Egypt the next day but I'll be honest we really did feel unsafe I thought the ship of return would have returned to Cyprus we were all in the dark about what was happening next it was a scary scary time so John in Malau and Bill says 25 years ago today I was inside the Western star pub who remembers that it was near UCC it was being completely renovated at the time and I was there working as a plumber they were getting the place ready for fresh freshers week it sounds systems TVs somebody turned around and said what's that point into the TV there was about nine TVs in the pub so we saw it all unfold live from New York the pub is flattened since and on freshers week it was very much the place to be as a beer gardens etc my memories and thoughts

15:44says Bill of 25 years ago thank you for that we send Paul Burry now to the streets asking the people of cork for their memories of 25 years ago and we'll hear of those after this break and here's our poll out on the streets of cork asking people for their memories of 25 years ago today I was inside the bank I was in IB in South Melbourne I was working for the consulate of the time I was a large income buddy and this fellow came against me if you'd be well known public in all cars so I could tell you who he is but came against me and said there's a plane after going into the to the tour you see and I'm hearing that there's a second one going in as

16:47so being the fellow that he is I thought he was while happening I was waiting for the punchline and he asked the guy he said and like that then people getting four cars you know under fours and and it was we're following it as it's been done but it's amazing you know it was to something differently over the blue when you think of it you know you couldn't even imagine it in your way the streams you know bad analysis tensions were around the world at the time it was still a huge shock I think it's a score related you know there was a car connection there as well you know so I mean there's always somebody lost no matter how big an event is world-wide you know we're changing really he was we're changing you know yeah that was the main thing really just trying to understand how things were going to change for everybody and yeah and where were you at the time and what did you think there was I I was at a friend's house I remember we were young and his mom was watching the news and we were all watching together and what did we think we thought we wouldn't go to fly again we thought it couldn't go on holidays I was thinking of another not coming

17:47holiday at the time I remember yeah that was it really that's how we thought at the time I've changed it absolutely life-changing yeah and so it was so it was changed the world yeah really at the time 9-11 it's a long long time ago I was at school I was lurking for a nurse and it was amazing nobody gone believe it I'm with that three Americans visiting cork can you take me back to 25 years ago in the States I was at work I was in a gym and we're sitting there watching the TV and all of a sudden they showed they showed the the the towers coming down it it was devastating absolutely devastating it you know our lives changed a lot that day but yeah you'll never forget those days so that's where I was I was in a gym yes this lady was keeping fit at the time what were you doing yourself I was standing in front of a television working out and I actually saw the plane hit the second building 25 years on you'll remember it for a lifetime oh absolutely it's

18:55one of those times like when John F Kennedy was assassinated and where were you 9-11 but however I have a granddaughter who's turning 16 she was born 16 years ago this Friday on a 9-11 so for me that redeemed it a bit they have a granddaughter that was born on that day because I tried to concentrate on her it was an awful shock at the time you know I'm sure you were so much going on and you see these things in the common Tom Landown and people running in all directions because it's very frightened just like where our tree was you understand I thought about yourself can you remember I absolutely remember I was working in London Wall I was temping at the time in the financial district and we were told to get down into the basements because they thought the potential attack would be common to London and I said to myself I was living in East London at the time which is a fairly fairly rough spot and I said I'm slipping out this building and getting back to East London because I'm not going to bomb there it'll be Canary Wharf or somewhere if it happens so I got out of

19:55London I went back to my apartment and and stayed there I was going to be stuck down in the basement in the bombshelter I didn't even know what the twin towers were until I saw it on the TV and then being told to get down into the bombshelter and I thought if they are going to do anything I'm in the financial district this is where it's going to hit so I legged it my first day in secondary school yeah so I mean I came home I found out to know what did you think when you witnessed what you were looking at on television I was pretty young but I knew it was a bit of a disaster yeah I remember I was in Limmering City and I was just standing yeah actually I was in my boyfriend's we were in the barbers and we were just looking up at the screen and yeah I didn't really understand what was happening but I remember visiting it then a few years later at the grave site you could call it and yeah very very moving stuff amazing yeah like it's just one of those experience where like yeah just all the hair basically stands up in your arms you know and yeah it's yeah very yeah

20:59there's an eerie silence and yeah you know it would leave you kind of quiet if you know to mean it's it's a very very moving you know I was only can say the bridge's a fishing and I didn't know anything had happened until I got home the ride unfolded then is it something that will stick in your mind for an eternity it would I went over and looked at the site all of the just you know it was visiting kind of a gallery what did you think when you were actually there well it's hard to you look and say yeah it is real I was in Dublin working and my thoughts were obviously totally shocked and concern I just couldn't believe like I started the playing going into the 20 hours and I was just shocked totally some people believed at the time they were watching a movie on television yes it was a bit like that until you know until you saw all the people you know

22:00I lived in New York so I'm a bit familiar with it and when you just saw all the people running you knew that it was real where were you 25 years ago training up in the GA club in Bishop's Town um for Schieneskall and I remember an old man coming through the wall to tell the school teacher um about it and then we went home and we were glued to it um I was 11 but we had lived in America uh for six years so we knew but I suppose America was like but um yeah I can remember there's a few things in life that you can I suppose pin to exactly where you were but if that's something that I could I'll never forget and then like the whole world's literally changed um from that just one day and this is something I suppose you'll you'll never forget where you are thank you to the people who took time to talk to Paul Diane says she was on a boss tour with a group from Mitchell Starrschring there was about 50 of them they were on a boss tour she said they

23:04were in Liston Varner when she got the news from her daughter and it's just people almost transfixed and can go back 25 years ago to tell you exactly where they were when they either got the news are they sold for the first time on TV if you want to share where you were and we heard about 9-11 you can call Merade 0818103103 text and WhatsApp 086203103 Court today on C103 and our reporter Paul Barn has been chatting with corkman Mark Clifford Mark's sister Ruth and his four-year-old niece Juliana were on one of the planes that crashed into one of the twin towers on this day 25 years ago Ruth was very successful in business woman uh she lived in Connecticut in a beautiful house on the shore uh Juliana a magnificent little four-year-old child just full of life Ruth had her brought to dancing classes and she was totally the apple of

24:06Routai yeah absolutely inseparable when did Ruth move to the states? Ruth moved to the states in and around 1973-74 and she went to back to she went to college in the states she had a really good life she worked with the Barbizon Agency for a while she was a model she did a bit work for a vogue and cosmopolitan then she started her own business she had a beauty care center it was a beauty spa and she opened a branch in Newark and in Boston Newton and then came along the apple of Routai her little angel her little angel came along Ruth was a 40 years of age she was married to David David as since past he had cancer in around the time of 9-11 he survived another probably five years and no all three are buried in syphembrace cemetery

25:08in cork where we go and visit the grave and it's it's it's known as the 9-11 grave take me back 25 years ago where were you you know what did you think when you heard about this crash where were you and what did you witness yourself maybe on television or did you hear on the radio i was attending a friend's funeral our friend's father's funeral up in Dublin we were in the same Stephen's Green Club we were called down to the bar area where there was a tv somebody said there was something happening in New York I got down to the bar looked at the screen and asked somebody was there a movie on or something and they said no this is live from New York it took me a little bit of time just to calculate the time difference and then I just remembered straight off the night before I was talking to my brother Ron and Ron said he had a meeting in New York and in the twin towers the morning of 9-11 so I immediately just went back and I and just

26:17tried to phone him privately and I see could I get through to him and eventually I did get through to them through to him it took a while but he was in the stress and making for home at that point did you have any idea at this stage that root your sister and your niece run board of flight no I had talked to run the night before asked him I told him I couldn't get through to Ruth he said I think she's an LA so at that point no I didn't have any idea when did you hear the news that Ruth and Juliana were on one of the flights were on one of the planes that had crashed into one of the towers on my journey down from Dublin I was in constant contact with Ron he he he within a couple of hours he had made it back to New Jersey to his family and he he said he contacted Ruth's husband and the thing that Ruth had got on the plane in Logan that morning

27:20when was this confirmed then that Ruth and Juliana were on one of the planes and my journey down run had sent my half-brother Spencer to Logan just to look for flight manifests I was getting phone call I was I had the ability to get in contact with the United States a lot of land lines couldn't for some reason my cell phone literally in the car I could get a line through to the United States all the way down from Dublin by the time I got to cork I knew that Juliana was with Ruth yeah absolutely devastating news to think you're beautiful sister and you're beautiful niece their lives had been robbed stolen yeah it's it's it's it's a tragic story it's a story that has too many coincidences it's one of the stories that would be very hard to believe if you you know casually told somebody the story it's it's a strange story and it's even more bizarre because

28:25Juliana's godmother was on the other plane that crashed into the second tower moments later yeah both planes were leaving 15 minutes apart Ruth could have been using air miles um page could have been using air miles uh on the credit cards whatever they used two separate flight services to LA both planes landing very close to each other and from that point on they'd have one or other of them would have organized the car service they'd have and to get where they wanted to go so again for the listeners I mean with respect you just couldn't make this up your brother Ron was in one of the buildings when the plane crashed your sister and her niece are on one of the planes and your niece's godmother page and the other flight yeah run had just walked in through the uh to the revolving doors of the mario the he heard an explosion looked behind him he saw the street was on fire he saw the person he had just passed on the street uh had had been hit and was

29:30on fire he rushed out um he threw his coat over this poor lady dragged her into the building because there was debris falling everywhere and brought her to an area where they could start giving this lady first aid this lady was a lady called Jenny Ann Mathia um so they proceeded to uh stay with her until uh paramedics came which in in around 15 minutes into the incident and they were working on Jenny Ann Mathia and a stabilizer um when the next plane hit and the whole building shook and the paramedics had to run this looks like we need to get over here fast John Ronnie asked um Jenny Ann was she able to walk and she said she could and they subsequently headed for the door Jenny Ann's um injuries were so severe that when people look when they shout make way make way

30:36to get out of the building people look behind them and clear the path for them um to get out of the building Jenny Ann Mathia died within probably a month and a half of her rescue to the building but her parents and her family were very appreciative to run to have their daughter to bury you know how soon after learning that Ruth and Juliana and Juliana's godmother had perished in in the explosion how soon afterwards did you visit the states you you made it your business to get over there we got over there within two weeks of the of the collapse we basically visited the ground zero it was still on fire and smoking and we we arranged this was a pre-arranged visit from with families and it was extremely well dignified visit the the Americans had really

31:39laid on terrific supports to the um to the families we we didn't go by road we went by ferry to the port authority area when you got there Mark you looked at owned can you describe what you saw and what was going through your mind this was the final place really that Ruth and Juliana had lost her lives this was just an unbelievable carnage a horrific site I can imagine um we weren't the only story in it um you know when we visited the memorial center in for 9-11 and the all the support center you could see the wall of missing people's pictures you could tell that you were not you were one story within a very very very large story and so it was very dignified but the carnage like you know everyone thinks two buildings collapsed two

32:47buildings they took down there was probably eight ten buildings um literally collapsed when the twin towers collapsed and so the area the area of collapse was was absolutely massive and and it was still on fire how soon afterwards then do they recover the bodies of Ruth and Juliana okay that's a story that the press weren't involved with in a lot of cases the so about nine months later we got a phone call from the FBI telling us that they had routes remains and they were winning to release them to the family so we organized a cremation service in New York and we brought Ruth's remains home and we buried Ruth in grave in symphonverse cemetery um up to I think was nearly probably 12 13 months later after the 9-11 we got Juliana's remains we got another phone call from the FBI

33:52and Juliana's was in target with Ruth in in in symphonverse grave it is wonderful to be able to visit a grave and to talk to them I presume but in fairness great credit to all of the emergency services the work they did to recover people's loved ones oh yeah the work went on for probably nearly two two years after the collapse they brought all the debris of the twin towers and all the other buildings to an island of New York and volunteers came every day and literally went you know religiously through the debris to find personal items and to see could they find even remains of people to bring them back for the families you mentioned personal belongings there no there is a story as well that you receive a phone call one day out of the blue to say that a personal item belonging to your late sister had been found. Ruth Wallace was found in the debris

34:57of the twin towers and all her credit cards everything were intact in the Wallace so that Wallace we have bestowed to the museum cork museum in Fistreds Park to display it is something that is dear to the family we have personally all brought it back from the United States and it has been under display in the museum in the United States up to no and so it is back in cork where it should be in display and like the credit cards that Ruth used to obviously get on the plane was still in her wallet and it's quite amazing. When you took hold of that wallet and when you saw what did you think to yourself Mark? I went yeah that purse was so close to Ruth it was possibly one of the last items that she held

35:58yeah Ruth was a very organized person she had a file of X she had a wallet and she was extremely organized person you know she'd left you know always you'd get a letter from Ruth from to you know the season she'd send you a card with a leaf in it from an autumn card just saying think and view or whatever Ruth displayed a lot of love and affection for her family. I want to ask you a little bit about the investigation 25 years on has Justice been done? No and fairness just as has not been done and there are still people in Quentana Mobile who basically are accused of being the perpetrators for the 9-11 attacks and then called Kelly Sheikh Muhammad he's still there and he definitely was one of the top men of next to Osama Ben Laden.

37:01Ron had been put on standby at least eight or nine times by the FBI to basically visit Quentana Mobile because a trial was imminent and the FBI said a trial was imminent. They run has had previously testified in Pennsylvania on another trial attached to 9-11 but very little has been done with regards to Ruth and Julianna's murder. Yeah. Donald Trump is visiting Ireland at the moment. Should we Hall Martin have a word with him to speed up this investigation for the sake of Ruth Julianna and all those who perished? Well thousands of people who perished and I've said many times that more people perished in the 9-11 attacks than the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and you know that brought you know thousands of young Americans into fight for American freedom. It's very hard to say the you know there hasn't been a consensus amongst any American politician.

38:08It doesn't make votes you know that's where sometimes the democracy fails because this sort of perseverance to get justice for the people and the families of 9-11 doesn't get votes so it hasn't been done and hasn't been done today. Sin from Barthamatory is where your sister, Ruth and our beautiful daughter, Julianna, that's their resting place. How often do you get there? What do you say to them? We get there because it's a family grave. We get there quite a lot and particularly around this time of year we just have to make sure that everything looks good but it's a grave that has people in Kork have used as a pilgrimage to it because of Ruth and Julianna, the picture of Ruth and Julianna because it relates to a mother and child has really hit the hearts of lots of people and a lot of people visit the grave because they're a little link to that world tragedy. It will never be forgotten. I hope not. I hope not. If Ruth was here today Mark,

39:13what would you say to her? We would just be probably sitting down enjoying the fact that Julianna has grown up and has become a beautiful 29-year-old woman probably full of life or doing something arti or whatever. Yeah and Ruth's family would just door to have her back and just think but that's never going to happen. It's a euphobia but look we have fabulous memories of Ruth and that's the most important thing to us. 41:18we used to call him John the Yank he kept running up to tell us what was unfolding in America and my daughter at the time was working in Manhattan so at first I didn't really believe him but he told me that if we see his family he'd contacted him from the states to say what was going on I drove home and then obviously I watched it all unfold on TV I contacted my daughter in Manhattan and it turned out that that morning she should have been down there in the area of the twin towers but the person who was giving her a lift for work was delayed by about 20 minutes and there are so many stories like that of people who just for whatever reason got delayed like that person picking them up was delayed the tube they were meant to take they missed it they missed the train that they were meant to take somebody left the house and realized oh did I switch off the immersion went back to check something that delayed them by about five or six minutes and it literally was just minutes could have changed somebody's life completely so Tom said happy that his daughter was

42:24okay but he said then a neighbor of his had a brother who was a police officer in New York at the time and the neighbor's brother the police officer was very badly injured two months before 9-11 though Tom has a very clear memory he was watching a documentary and it was a documentary about the twin towers and how the twin towers had been built and the construction methods that were used and Tom says he clear now remember this is 25 years ago two months and 25 years ago and he's still clearly remembers it he said one of the issues that was highlighted in the documentary was there was issues highlighted around the fire coating on the steelwork at the center core of both of the twin towers Tom said 28 stories of both buildings had bare steel they should have been six inches of fire coating on the steel so Tom said as he was watching the telly that day

43:29I'm watching everything unfold it was in his mind this documentary that he had watched just two months ago and he said he was shouting at the television because he could see people running into the building the fire officers were running into the building police officers that wonderful priest the chaplain to the fire officers for the Michael Lynch he ran into the buildings and Tom said he was actually shouting at the TV saying don't go in don't go in because he knew what was going to happen he knew from that documentary that those buildings were going to come down because that steel core that should have been coated with the fire coating that would have kept it and made the building stronger he knew the building was going to come down and was going to come down very quickly because of that Tom feels that Rudy Giuliani who was the mayor of New York at the time allowing the fire chief and the fire engineers they should have been charged he felt with mass murder he said he knew if he knew instantly that those buildings were going to come down he said surely others did as well and he doesn't know why there wasn't a call to get

45:35Maris says 25 years ago he remembers coming back from lunch into the office and a colleague saying that there was planes crashing into the twin towers in New York people couldn't believe it yeah because it was early morning it was between eight and nine o'clock in the morning in New York but it cost for us it was lunchtime it was between kind of between half one and half two wasn't we were starting to hear the news because it was Joe Duffy he was presenting live line at the time he was the one I think for a lot of us who what you could be in a work or weren't near a TV screen or didn't have somebody contact us from America he was probably the first that a lot of people kind of broke us to the nation every anyone who was listening to him on the day thank you for that Maris Sean says I remember being out in the yard in the shed it was away from the main house Sean said clearly remember he was working on an old Ford 4000 tractor he could even remember the make a model of the tractor he said it was a lovely quite very peaceful day in September

47:38this day 25 years ago and then on a couple of other topics anybody else got your home insurance premium of late because an incident says morning Patricia I've just received my home insurance quote this morning and just looking at it I've worked out it's increased 200 euro in just five years but also what's really annoying the listener is this new 30 euro levy what in the name of God is the government doing about this are the insurance companies not making enough money and now they're sneaking in this levy for those who are built on flood plains a lot of that is because of what happened with some of the planners and their skyline making people build down in holes rather than allowing them to elevate their houses if they could have elevated their properties they would have prevented a lot of flooding but then again I've noticed it depends on who you are and where you are if you are to get planning in the meantime I just feel insurance

53:00with your story or comment cork today at c103 dot i e cork today on c103 if you've tried to book a doctor's appointment recently you'll know that accessing care in cork can remain a times a real challenge for over a decade now the big concern has been a massive shortage of gps driven largely by an aging workforce many of them heading towards retirement however recent figures from the medical council show that while doctor numbers in cork are rising a new problem is brewing on the horizon training numbers for new doctors has expanded significantly which is great news but experts now are warning that our next major bottleneck won't be a lack of doctors it'll be a lack of physical space for them to treat patients joining me to break this down as doctor nick flin who is medical director of the med hub clinic here in cork and chief medical

54:00officer at barter gp in double nick has been practicing as a gp for 25 years and he joins me on the program today good morning chanick good morning precision nice to talk to you as well looking at the recent medical council figures showing over 600 gps working in cork what is the daily reality on the ground now right now for doctors in patients who were trying to access care yeah so we've had a supposed a period of a success medically over last say 20 30 years for people are living longer and then we also had the population are increasing through immigration other factors so the population is increasing because we're living longer into old age the care the population needs is becoming more complicated and so really those kind of factors have combined to a perfect storm of making access to care or difficult you know the the number of gps

55:02we have in the country has been static for a long time and while that number has been static the population says it's becoming bigger older and the care we're delivering is more complex so you know it takes longer to deliver the care and out it with patients you know the medications are more complicated they require more monitoring and you know they refer pathways into secondary and tertiary care are more complicated so so all those things that I've meant that you doctors need more time with our patients and and what we're what we've seen then as a response in that from HSE which has been quite successful I think is that they've been successful at increasing the number of GP training places so back to 2019 we were training about 200 to 250 gps per year and that was just the bill but not quite keeping up for retirements but now we're seeing the number of gps in training every year to there's two different kind of streams of training or ways that gps can train but the total number of gps in training is now somewhere between maybe 500 and 550 so that's almost a doubling in the number of gps that we'll train and that will certainly

56:08from you know a workforce by the view be helpful and I think that will catch up and over maybe you know five to eight years you'll have certainly enough gps in the country specialist training gps you can provide high quality care but if anybody imagines their the local GP practice whether it's in a primary care center or whether it's in a you know maybe a standalone GP clinic you know you can see that I'm sure all the rooms are busy gps you know we need support staff so we've our admin staff clearly we also have our supporting clinical staff so for the bottomists and nurses and advanced nurse practitioners and and indeed our trainees so all of those people are in addition to the extra gps so you know the physical infrastructure now needs to be looked at to ensure that in three or four years time when the these gps are looking for jobs and places to work that the physical infrastructure is there and that was really the point I was making is that yeah

57:10because we have so many new primary care centers that have been built in the last number of years but I'm even thinking about the primary care center that I will be using in North cork and I'm already starting to think are the ones that are there because they are already almost full capacity there's certainly isn't any spare rooms are they already do we already need to look at those and start saying can we build on we need to build bigger ones so those buildings I mean I'm sure I should reach buildings like it is different but it is difficult to build on to those maybe you can build up but it is difficult to build on that attack experience myself in St. P. S. Primary Care Center which is a fantastic you know primary care center three different GP practices but there's no expansion room for for general practice there so our own practices we've got 10 rooms and you know all the rooms are busy all of the time and looking at the at the numbers of doctors come to indicate that's needed we're probably looking at you know an increase in the workforce of the order of maybe 33 to 50% and that's just in the doctors not the nurses that will support them in

58:14the you know the flotimists and in the advanced staff so you know the practices need to be able to expand our new practices need to be able to you know to develop and for what I see on the ground is that the while some groups can do that individual doctors will struggle to do that without some support or some incentives to do so yeah funding obviously would be a huge thing when it comes in infrastructure are you suggesting direct HSC buildings are would it be would you see tax incentives for private GPs so the model we have at the moment is that the primary care centers are either funded by the HSC are built by private developers and at least back to the HSC and the GPs that's one model and it works to some degree but if you if the GPs themselves which for general practices a small meetings I'd enterprise you know it's come a long way from the college industry it was 20 years or 25 years ago and I started but for individual GPs like it's

59:16a they're you know their sole traders they're in general enough very well funded that start their careers and a lot of those doctors to be able to you know set up practice in a meaningful way that as the infrastructure that modern have their needs and the builds the team the multidisciplinary team that a GP needs around them and you know I think that that would be you know it'd be wise to look at ways of supporting that and you know I'm agnostic to be honest about what those ways are either the HSC funds directly orders you know true reviews some kind of an incentive scheme that encourages development but if we don't do we will have done a great job at looking as the number of doctors that we need to supply the care but we'll have been very short-sighted in that providing them with the infrastructure that they need and we can see it it's it's three or four years away but we can see it's going to happen these doctors are going to qualify they are going to look for a job and you know if they don't get a job in Ireland they have got some rest. Yeah we're

1:00:17losing yeah that's deleted the fees in the purpose. But looking at the at the GPs of today I mean the report highlights over 34% of GPs face weekly barriers to providing what they say is safe care and tend to working over 48 hours a week how are the conditions affecting morale across practices hearing core it must be tough for some practices. Yeah it is always tough and in general practices it's a great profession and privilege to be able to you know provide the care but it is it has always been a tough profession to be in you know the hours are long you know the stakes are high you know patience health is very important you know and so it's important that the systems are right and for systems to be right we need the right infrastructure and the right support teams but you know we are seeing I suppose some born out of our colleagues in that but we can see that it's getting better so I mean this is the frustrating I suppose position where at the moment we can see that the new trainees are coming through there's going to be there's going to be a decent

1:01:19supply of good quality doctors on the ground and just but preparing for that really Patricia and you know we do need to make a little bit of noise around that and as I say I'm totally agnostic as the weather to H.C. provides practices for the new doctors or whether it's the motor format for us but we do need to discuss it and it needs to be kind of out in the openness and that's something that we walk blindly in ten four or five years time. Okay okay and just the fact that a fifth of our current GP workforce is approaching retirement to age do you have any idea how many years do we have before that transitional overlap between retiring GPs and the new graduates balance out you don't seem that concerned you you reckon it will work out. Like historically I would have been on which is saying that we're in a workforce crisis yeah I think that as rebalance now and I think the H.C. have been very strategic and how they've done that and it's going to be very successful and it's a traditional GP training scheme which is you know Irish European graduates who do a four year training scheme and then there's an international medical

1:02:21graduate scheme which for which experienced doctors who who've practiced general practice in maybe their home country or outside of Ireland can come and do a two year accelerated scheme like I think both are really good training schemes producing really good doctors so like there might be a small you know pinch into retirement replacements kind of metric but I don't think so I think we're going I think the numbers are going to be okay for that but it's it's for the care we need we need more than that so we need to beat the retirement then we need to make positive you know net positive numbers in the GP workforce and we're going to do that but they need somewhere to see the patients and their nurses need them or to see the patients. 1:05:34based in and around for more he was very close associate of Liam Lynch and he was very involved in two of the biggest kind of them how will I say events if you like of the word of independence in North cork at the attack on the Wesleyan Church and also then the kidnap of a very high ranking British general which made news around the world so yeah I would you well I would you've grown up being told about those stories absolutely I did yeah and I mean I remember I wrote about this a couple of years ago I remembered the story in particular that we were told was that his name was George power and that he was very involved in the kidnap of this general who went by the name of Henry Cuthbert Lucas general Lucas and he was kidnapped as he was fishing on the banks of the black water and George was very involved and so that he was kidnapped and he was rushed away then to safe house and he was moved around they were trying to use them as far as I know to spring McFith's Gerald from prison in cork and so they were kind of holding him hostage but the thing I

1:06:35always remember two things I was always told growing up was number one after the kidnap my grandfather was dispatched up to Dublin to report to Michael Collins and I know from his witness statement that he did he came up on the train from cork to Dublin and he met with Michael Collins a number of times and then he went back to North cork but the other thing which I was always told was that when they eventually kind of released there's two stories that Lucas was released by the IRA because he was costing them a fortune they weren't really getting anywhere so there's a story that he escaped and there's a story that he was kind of let escape but what was always what he said after he returned to the UK was that he was treated like a gentleman by gentleman and I always remember thinking oh my god that's lovely and then as I got older I kind of thought that's baloney I was told that just baloney but as again this is a long convoluted story but as luck would have it I managed to get in contact with um General Lucas's granddaughter this is about 10 or 15

1:07:38years ago by and we were emailing for a while and that was one question I had for her did you ever hear this he was treat she said absolutely he absolutely said that she he had written it in a letter to his wife so it was true it wasn't just stuck home stuck home syndrome yeah but it was George power was a decent man that's basically what what is swimming up which is it was a decent man and and hear George power from from Oi and here we have his granddaughter Barbara Scully talking to us because she's coming back to talk comedy to us you describe yourself now you describe yourself as the oldest and newest on the comedy circuit in Ireland and Barbara I have to ask you how do you jump from writing and broadcasting into stand-up comedy in your 60s I mean is it a midlife crisis or is it a bit beyond that it could be I mean I have brothers who say you should go to therapy instead of this crack that you're going off stage you know the silly something wrong

1:08:41which but um no I mean you know like most things in my life first of all I didn't plan to go into comedy I kind of fell into it but also the other thing which which is real is that as I was coming up to 60 I'm now 64 as I was coming up to 60 I was starting to think do you know what life is completely different at this age I'd come up to 60 then I was thinking it was going to be there's so much talk now about menopause and all that kind of stuff and all of it is negative but nobody talks about once you get through menopause which can be a bit of a challenge but once you get through menopause is only a temporary situation and once you get through menopause it's like being in a raft on the rapids like for a while and it's a bit bumpy and it's a bit ropey and then all of a sudden you come out into this very tranquil lake and if you're halfway lucky that you have most of your health still together um you suddenly realize oh my god I have freedoms to do things that I haven't had for decades particularly if you're a parent um you know suddenly all those hats that you've worn as wife and mother and whatever hat you were in your career in your job they suddenly start

1:09:46to kind of fall off and you kind of think I can do whatever the hell I want to do and that is combined with the idea that like I don't really care too much anymore about what people think about what I'm doing I'm not looking for anybody's permission to do stuff and that's all exhilarating and it's intoxicating and it makes you do slightly mad stuff and as well as that because you also have then what I call the um the doomsday clock ticking in the background which kind of says if there's something you think you might like to do you really should try it out now because you know what are you going to run out of road yeah you have less time going forward than you have looking back but I loved that you know the fact of the name of your show is because I'm worth it what made you realize what made you realize it was finally time to put yourself front in center of your own life because that's what a bit of it is about oh it is yeah and I think again it was that thing of suddenly you know I was I was writing the other day and thinking back my last my youngest child left school in 2019 and I had been because I had a big gap between my first

1:10:47and the next two I had been a school mom and I hate that term but I'd been a school mom for 28 years right when it all finally came to an end and I remember saying to my two younger daughters the eldest to the emigrated already at that stage I remember saying to the two youngest daughters right that's I've done this for 28 years I've gotten you through school you're now in college I know we've to pay for that and we will pay for that but now you're on your own do you know it's up to you to do whatever you're going to do and I'm not going to be here I'm here to make dinner that's grand but I made a side to take off for the day and not make dinner and then you're on your own and there's a freezer full of stuff and that was the start of it of thinking I don't need to be at their back in call anymore and and I thought you know no I'm going to go out there and see what else kind of appeals to me and I wrote a book which you mentioned which was published in 2022 which was called wise up and it was really about that whole thing of getting older and especially for women closing your ears to the absolute baloney that we get fed all the time about our worth is tied up in our appearance you know an anti-aging and you should be fighting your lines

1:11:52and wrinkles like that's all fine if that's what you want to do but honest to god there are so many better things that you can spend your time energy and money on and that's what that's the message if you like behind my first show that I did which was called older bolder wiser and this one and this one I'm taking at the step beyond and kind of saying to men and women but particularly to women you are worth it now is the time to move yourself up your priority list because I think as women we go through decades and we are the bottom of our own priority list when we put everybody else's needs ahead particularly if you've children and that's the way it should be I suppose but when you get to this age now you have to move yourself up and sometimes it's it feels a bit like oh maybe I shouldn't be doing this and what I want to say to women is yes you should be doing this now is your time now is time for you to put yourself center stage and do the things that make you happy and do the things that you've always wanted to do and maybe never had a chance to do it well said and I know when you're in your show preview you mentioned a person a ban on flying budget airlines like Ryanair and obviously Mr. O'Leary and Ryanair is in the news for all

1:12:56the wrong reasons at the moment yeah well what was to find a straw the major say I'm bloody worth worth well better than this well there was a couple of things like number one is that I finally realized that they're not cheaper there are only cheaper if you're willing to go in your holidays with a handbag and I'm not a small woman like I couldn't go anywhere with just a handbag so that there was that and there was also the I suddenly realized I'm too old now to be putting up with the kind of if Michael O'Leary hears me he'll probably sue me but the kind of risk of whiplash you get on one of their on-time arrivals you know Ryanair landings tend to be like fairly kind of solid into the ground engines then reverse thrust and you're still the engines are going backwards you're still going forwards you could lose your teeth in the season frontier so and as well as that which I discussed in my previous show the whole Malarkey about priority boarding and and standing around because he won't give you enough seats to sit down and then when you finally get moving and you think oh finally we're on the way you're not on the way I told you're going to

Garda Shea Kona have declared the visit an extraordinary event and the reason it's been described as that it is the scale of the policing operation the policing and security operation for the visit will be one of the biggest policing and security operations that have ever been implemented by the force in this country. Now the highest impact when it comes to delays is going to be on the M50 that's where they'll have

1:44:14building inside in the western star and seeing it was the place to be for freshers they were mad trying to get get it ready for freshers week and it was near at UCC and just turning around and looking at the screens it just like the world stopped and the way someone someone out working in a in a barn and went indoors and didn't go back out into the yard again as I say it just it was as if the world as to it still and as I was saying it's saying to you I clearly remember this at this day because Marsha had just had come to live with us on the 29th of July 25 years ago and we were at that early stages of trying to get medical help for her to see what could be done for her if there was anything could be done for this was even way before we'd even thought about adopting her and it was this day she was in the mercy hospital having an examination on the anesthetic on her hearing they were trying to test to see how much hearing she actually had and she would eat on this day it should have been just a day procedure but she had a reaction to the anesthetic and she was very

1:45:14unwell just vomiting and that's what she had to stay in and I got into the hospital in the morning with my husband he was staying with her while she was having going down to the theatre I was coming back to do the program then I was going up in the afternoon to let him go to work so I suddenly discovered because Marsha was getting sick I'd have to stay up there on the way up in the car I heard Joe Joffie talk about what was coming out of America my husband rang to say that Marsha was vomiting where are you I'm on my way and then he he said what's going on in America and he said it's on the TV screen here in the children's ward he said it's unreal and then I went up and spent like literally the rest of that evening Marsha was sleeping off the anesthetic just staring at a TV screen with various nurses and doctors coming in and I was very conscious in aware of the nurses and doctors in Ireland because they were thinking what was going on in hospitals in New York I was very very aware of that but yeah it would stay with me and it is hard to believe that it is
