Coffee and Your Brain: What MRI Scans Reveal About Optimal Consumption
About this episode
In today's episode we're exploring the significant association between regular coffee consumption and structural brain health, focusing on findings from the population-based Hamburg City Health Study.
Researchers investigated how coffee intake relates to key brain MRI parameters, including markers of neurodegeneration (cortical thickness) and microstructural integrity (PSMD).
The study indicated that moderate consumption of 1–4 cups per day was associated with better microstructural white matter integrity (lower PSMD).
Furthermore, 3–4 cups per day was specifically linked to higher cortical thickness. We discuss this observed U-shaped relationship - where very high consumption was not superior to very low consumption - and the suggested neuroprotective roles of coffee's anti-inflammatory properties.
