Coach Greg McDermott Honored for Cancer Fight

0:00On April 23rd, Creighton basketball coach Greg McDermott just picked up the American Cancer Society's top volunteer honor, the St. George National Award. They gave it to him Wednesday night at the team's end of season banquet in Omaha. This award goes to folks with years of real impact in cancer research, patient care, and community drives. Only a handful get it each year out of over. A million volunteers nationwide. For more than 20 years, McDermott's been all in with coaches versus cancer, leading efforts in the North region. He helped lodge the tip-off breakfast in Omaha, pulling together local division one coaches to fund the hope lodge. Nationally, he's on the coaches versus cancer council, shaping big strategies from his coaching cred. His pink out game at Creighton turned into a massive tradition, packing arenas with thousands in pink for awareness and funds. That event alone helped raise over one million dollars for cancer programs. Fans, survivors, and families rally around it, and other schools copy the model now.

1:02McDermott's also poured personal support into the Omaha hope lodge, giving free stays to patients traveling for treatment. All this fundraising, awareness, leadership shows why he's a perfect fit for the award, right up there with legends like Norm Stewart and Phil. Martelli, he wrapped up 16 years as Creighton's winning his coach with 366 victories just this month. His work keeps pushing the fight against cancer forward, lighting the way for more leaders to step up.
