CO-HOST | Make Money by Turning Creative Obsessions Into Smart Investments

About this episode

Travis Makes Money is made possible by:

Travis Chappell and producer Eric Skwarczynski kick off the first episode of this five-part series with a funny, unfiltered conversation about sales, creator-led businesses, and the strange psychology of billionaires. From a brilliantly simple door-to-door pitch to Markiplier’s reported GoPro investment, Travis and Eric explore how creativity, attention, and conviction can turn unusual ideas into real business opportunities. On this episode we talk about: Why a “no soliciting sign” can be one of the smartest—and funniest—door-to-door sales products The sales lesson behind matching a product to an immediate customer pain point The difference between being genuinely resilient and manufacturing hardship for status A new potential segment: “Billionaire: Badass or Batshit” Why creators are increasingly becoming investors, operators, and business owners Markiplier’s reported GoPro stake and what it could signal about creator-led investing How action cameras, smartphones, and creator tools have changed the video-production landscape Potential recurring show segments, including “Great Knockers,” “Billionaire: Badass or Batshit,” and “Creator Economy” Top 3 Takeaways Great sales often start with an obvious, immediate problem. The no-soliciting-sign pitch works because it gives homeowners a simple solution to something actively bothering them: unexpected people knocking on their door. Don’t confuse unnecessary suffering with real resilience. Pushing through pain may make for a dramatic story, but meaningful adversity usually has real stakes, consequences, and a purpose beyond proving toughness. Creators can build wealth beyond content revenue by investing in the products, platforms, and companies that support their work. Understanding the tools you use can create opportunities to become more than just a customer. Notable Quotes “If you have a double opening front door… they have money, and they have stacks of cash they just reach in and phew.” “I got something for everybody.” “He has to manufacture fear and pain in his own life because he’s insulated himself from reality.” “Creators [are] making some money moves.” “Markiplier isn’t just using the tools. He’s betting on the company making them.” Connect with Travis Chappell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/travischappell/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/travischappell/ Website: https://travischappell.com/ A Word from Our Sponsors: - The most successful business owners don't do it all themselves — they delegate. Welcome back to the show. My name is Travis Chappell in studio. I'm a producer Eric Scorsinsky. Hey, my name is Eric Scorsinsky. I was, was that a good pronunciation? Yeah. I feel, I think I used to say Scorsinsky. I was, something like that. I was at the, I was at the blood drawing place. What's that called? Lab. Yeah. Sure. The blood drawing place is my castle. Was it a dog? I suck people's blood. Anyway, I was at the blood drawing place and they were, they were like, oh, our, a billing

service is down. That was like, awesome. And they said, oh, so we have to call it in. I was like, ah, okay. But anyway, so they called it in. And so I could hear, you know, we can just hear, like muffled over the phone. Yeah. So they're like, okay, the name on the card is Eric, E, R, I, C. Last name. It's Corsinsky, SK, W, A, R, C, C, Y, N as a Nancy. That was funny. They only did that letter and is a Nancy. They said it correctly though. Yeah. They were staring at my card. Well, yeah, but good luck. Yeah. Whatever. And then I heard after she finished all the letters, I just heard the person on the other line go, she. And the first thing kind of like to, the receptionist kind of looked at me like, how it was laughing. I thought it was very funny. It was very funny because that's what I think when I see my own name sometimes. Well, that's why your Instagram is Eric's. Beach. I know. I always feel like following me and they're like, ah, where's your skin content?

Not really. All right. So I want to start with a little bit of an icebreaker. You know, Phineas? Yes. From Phineas and Ferb. Yes. I know that one. I'm just kidding. Much more. Phineas is who's Phineas? Tell me about it. I don't know. No, he's, he's, who's he, who's he related to? What's the person's name? I don't know. Billy Eilish. Is that Billy Eilish's brother? I don't know. If only there was some way to, is it Phineas? Yeah, Phineas. Phineas. You made me down myself. Yeah. Anyway, Phineas was on podcast and he was talking about, hey, Star Wars. And I love Star Wars. I know you like Star Wars. And I thought this was a fun story. Are you ready? Yeah. The funniest Star Wars thing I've heard in the last couple of years made me laugh for several days, which was. That's not true. That's a way too long to be laughing. I was hospitalized. Yeah. All right. Why do I do this? Developing a Star Wars video game. And they wanted a couple more darts.

They had Darth Vader. There's Darth Sidious. Darth Maul. Through their liaisons, like George was like, I can, I can come up with some new darts names. And they were like, oh my god. Like the guy, you know what I mean? And he came in and he was like, Darth Icky. Darth Insaneus. Darth Insaneus. And I think that the crew was like, what? And he was just like, like left. It's not actually funnier than Darth Vader, I guess. But it's so funny to me. The confidence. Yeah. You know, when you become the master. Darth Insaneus is great. You know what? If you're George Lucas, you're allowed to say insane things and they are now art. Have you ever seen only difference? I've ever seen. No, I'm going to get it. Now I'm really sidetracked. But have you ever seen that George Lucas meeting sketch? No. I gotta show you. George Lucas is so funny. I love George Lucas. Don't you love George Lucas? I do love George Lucas.

I mean, it sucks that he sold the Disney. But I also can't. Now he just opened a sick museum though. That is true. Yeah, I saw that. Yeah, I wish that he would have sold to somebody else. But also, you know, if I was staring down the barrel of a billion dollar exit to a massive company like that, I probably would have taken it to. But you know, I would have much preferred George Lucas's preference for how the next three movies should have gone. Right. It would have been far better than what Disney did with it. Okay, that clips eight minutes. I'm going to show you just a robot chicken sketch with George Lucas instead. I'm going to do a call and audible here. Perfect. Have you ever seen this? I don't think so. You're George Lucas. Uh, I take it. You're here for the Star Wars adventure. I sure am. Who want to see my costume? Uh, I don't know. See? I'm a taunt on. But I don't have to tell you.

You invented taunt on. Well, that's, uh, that's serious. Listen to my taunt on call. It's a bubble. It's a bubble. It's a bubble. It's a bubble. Uh, nicely done. Oh, you're gone. Oh, my God, George Lucas. Please, sir, go into my bag. I can't breathe. Oh, my God. That feels like a shit. Oh, my God. I can't breathe. Rubber wrap. This is still making the noises. Oh, well. And I thought they smelled bad on the outside. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I'm just like in the movies. Thank you. Thank you. And that was the greatest day of my whole life. What about when I was born? Not even close. It's so good. About checking his messages. So, so good.

Well, all right, Travis. Now that we have this extended format, where we can talk about lots of different things. I have a long list of topics I want to get into. Let's do it. The very first one, you know, let's keep it light and fun. I've thought about doing a segment on the show called Great Nockers. And we watched Dordador sales clips. Because I could do that every day of my life. Yeah. Because there's so many good ones. But I saw maybe, maybe the best Dordador sales video I've ever seen in my entire life. Oh, sweet. Most of them suck. So this one stood out. All right. Because it wasn't bad. You're saying because this is incredible or because this is actually good. Best pitch of all time, best product of all time, best reaction from customers of all time, best video of all time. Now I feel like you're not being serious. No, I'm being 100% serious. You ready? Here we go. So this is, I'm actually selling no-sale. Agents of chaos on YouTube, who I get all my sales advice from. You ready? You're selling no-sale listing signs today. I love it.

And the bigger one here is $7.50. And these are five bucks. And... Did it come here the other day if you're selling some candy straws? And these chocolates? That doesn't ring about now. You want to know how to sell them? Maybe a friend. Maybe for a friend. $8.00. $8.00. Thank you so much. I appreciate you. Creativity. You have a good day. How much spare for that? $2.00. Okay, good. I've got to check the margins here. That's hilarious. Here comes the money. Oh. Hi. I'm actually selling no-sale listing signs today. Would you be interested? No. I would be interested. You want to get a no-sale listing sign? No, I don't. Or choose to lose sitting. I don't think I would. But it would stop people like me from coming. So if I put it on like a rainbow. Oh no, I will absolutely not come back. Okay, yeah, I'll take one. That hurts. Okay, $5.00. Just a second. Thank you so much. Have a good day. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. Let's go! The most successful business owners don't buy no-sale. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

good. And I asked money you could make doing that. I know. I would immediately thought that I should just take a day to get some for 10 bucks and buy them for two. Well, here's my thing. If you find people at doors like that, they have money. Right. Exactly. If you have a nice near place, if you have a double opening front door, yeah, I don't know what they're called, double opening front doors, double doors. Oh, that's probably right. If you find a house that looks like it has a foyer, they have money and they have stacks of cash that just reach in and they don't like people knocking on their doors. Right. They don't. But it's also objectively hilarious to knock to sell and no soliciting sign. What do you think about it? Also a really funny thing to do as a door door salesman. If you just like as your own there. Yeah. No, but really, I'm your sole pocket. There's with no soliciting signs. This is like your backup sale. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah. That's like if they start getting mad or angry with you, then you just switch the pitch. Actually, yeah, if they say don't bother me again, I got something for I got something for everybody. That's great. Yeah. That's great. I like that. So do we like us at ongoing segment?

Great knockers. Yeah. Or I thought about a what was the other one I can't but I had like a big list home and I should put them on there. But great. I got stuck on I got stuck on knockers. One time my dad referred to a woman's bosom as knockers. Really? And it was like it was like one of those times where you go, oh, my dad is from another generation. He said something like I forget how he said it, but he said it like just like you know a woman's knockers. That's like 40s. That's not even like 60s dad. I don't know what what that is. I have another, I have another segment category thing that I think could be ongoing because billionaires do a lot of really cool things. Yeah. Sometimes and then like building the George Lucas Museum. Right. Call back. Sometimes they do things that are absolutely ridiculous. So I want to do a segment called billionaire badass or batshit. Where I show you a clip of a billionaire and you tell me if this guy is on to something or if he's a cookie old man with a lot of money. Do we have an

example? You'd be surprised how many are cookie old men with money based on the clips I was seeing. I guess you wouldn't be surprised at all. Yeah. All right. Here's a here's a really good example. Okay. Ready? There's a story that my partners know I had to get a tooth removed. Actually drilled that's a two drill for for a root canal and I had to go to a meeting right after that and sounds like the drill still in him. Yeah. Yeah. Go to meetings. Hold the dentist. Drill without any Nova King and he says you're out of your mind and my whole life I wanted to see if I was a badass or not. In other words, on my fake badass that has this envelope nobody could tell or I'm or I'm really a badass on the inside and I told the dentist take it out with no Nova King and he drilled and I jumped and I told the dentist I will move again and I didn't move again and I used the trick

of thinking what it must be like to go to war and lose an arm or two legs. That's pain with consequences. Mine was pain with no consequences and so I just said it's just nerve endings from there to my spine to my brain. Fuck it. I'm not moving. Now I have to go and change my shirt because I was a puddle swear but I didn't move and so I love fear. It does wonders for me. It gives me the challenge to overcome that gives me then a sense of security. Look because this that's shit or badass. That's shit. I mean it's a little to be fair it's a little bit of both. Do you believe this actually happened? That he sat still and didn't move and got a root canal? Well to be far I've never had a root canal. Neither. I don't know what that is. Probably a both do for one. But I assume it's terrible. Yeah. Like the nerve endings in your teeth is that's no joke. He's like it's just the nerve that attaches to your brain. Yeah. And I got rid of that years ago. Yeah but I feel like

there's other ways to test bad assery than getting a root canal with no novacane. You want to hear the comment? It's a badge of honor that I don't care to earn. Do you think the comments were fans of him? I do not. Okay. How'd you know? Just call it intuition. Yeah you do have a wonderful intuition. Yeah. All right. Someone said I'd rather see him survive for years strictly on the weekly earnings of his lowest paid employee. Someone said a root canal is paying with no consequences. Not if you jump in the drill goes somewhere it's not supposed to go. As for that guy being a bad ass not in that outfit. That was unnecessary. That's a stretch. This is what I thought. This is the comment that most summed up my feeling. Someone said he has to manufacture fear and pain in his own life because he's insulated himself from reality by creating fear and pain in the lives of many other people. Okay. Mostly that. I don't know what he's like as a boss but I was going to say but he's like guys this worked really well for me mandatory if you're on a dental plan. We're not

paying for novacane. You don't need it. But being so insulated from reality you have to find these extreme ways to feel something. Yeah. Well that is in typical billionaire. As far as billionaires go to feel something when they're insulated from reality. I'm just glad this is legal and only involved pain brought on himself. Yeah. That's very true. The most successful business owners don't do it all themselves. They delegate. Chime is a fintech not a bank banking services and chime card provided by Chimes bank partners qualifying direct deposits required terms and limits apply. Go to chime.com slash disclosures for details. And then someone brought this up. Someone said fun twist. He jumped when the dentist was injecting light a cane. It's funny. I had no adversity in life. So I didn't vent his

try about overcoming pain to feel better about myself. Well, that's another big assumption. Big assumption. Here's one. Typically billionaires are people who had a lot of adversity. Maybe. Unless they inherited large sums of money. Most billionaires did not. Women have been bringing what's crazy is it was what's the dentist that you who was Dr. Brady that did this. He should do a stitch. He's just holding him down. Someone said women have been bringing life to this world through natural chauper for thousands of years. And this guy thinks he did something because he claims he had a root canal without a numbing shop for his mouth for an hour or so. Have I got that right? Oh, you big tough guy. Good job, little buddy cool story, bro. Geez. And it's that's just a little bit of the comment. Wow. So. Oh, and then he said also which is it you had to get the tooth removed or drilled for root connoxes. Those aren't remotely the same thing. Big guy. Big guy. Maybe you should leave the story to other people who know stuff at least enough to lie well. You know, like you leave all the other labor to other people too. Just maybe let someone else

do the thinking and telling parts. Just a thought. I know those are tough too. Maybe AI helped you write this story to regale your partners with. I'm sure they circle jerked with you for it as you all do. Jesus Christ. I like that one. Can I like that one from your rather innocuous story for people have such crazy reactions? Okay, but but overall though this guy's bad shit. Yeah, that's bad shit. Right. But yeah, that's probably the same type of bad shit stuff that allowed him to become a billionaire potentially. Next. I don't know who this guy is. Next segment Travis tries. I have a dentist coming in the room. It's gonna be clear. I'm not a billionaire. I have a dentist coming in this Saturday, October 16th. Yeah, I have nothing to prove there. All right, that's a good one. One more, I have one more segment idea. Okay. Creator economy. Yeah, you like that? Of course. You like that. And it's funny because it's can mean two things. The economy around creators and creators in the economy, huh? I don't know.

I don't know whatever. I've pulled that half of it. I pulled that out of my root canal. I don't know. Can we move on? So I want to talk about creators making some money, making some money moves. And the first story that comes into this space is, I think we've spent a little bit of time talking about. Do you remember GoPros? I sure do. Remember when that was like the biggest thing on the planet? Oh, yeah. I had the GoPro Hero 2. What are they on now? Probably 12. You know, you can fact check once a while. You make me tell a story and fact check at the same time. How many how many GoPro iterations? I believe I had the Hero 3 or 4. I mean, I was really interested in that. Yeah. The GoPro has had 30 major camera iterations in its history. Wow. Starting with the original 35 millimeter film hero in 2004. I didn't know that. That was such an awesome thing when that came out. I didn't know they had a 35 millimeter film

version. I didn't either. That's crazy. Because the first digital one was 2006. I remember just they would release the sizzle reels. Yeah. Of just GoPro footage. You've never seen anything like that in your entire life. And yeah, I was blown away by it. Before I share the big update, because GoPro kind of started fading out because phones have gotten waterproof. They can take a beating. There's lots of other like camera phones that are amazing. There's all the Insta360 action cams and all that. Pretty much all camera companies have taken a beating from. Right. Yeah. That's true. But before I get into what just put GoPro back on the map in a big way, do you remember when Peter Jackson used GoPro's for Lord of the Rings? No. Or for Not Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit. No. Dude, it's so. By so ring filming? Yeah. Have you seen the Hobbit movies? Yeah. Okay. It's the most jarring shots ever. Remember this. It's great because it's so weird because the movie already looks weird because he did the weird 120 frames per second filming. But there's like random GoPro

shots in the barrel scene. Oh, yes. Where it's like it looks like 480p. Right. Like it's crazy how badly that. Those are GoPro's. Yeah. Yeah. You put GoPro's on the barrels. Which in theory, like there's something to mounting the camera like that. Yeah. But it looks so bad compared to the other footage. Yeah. Like I don't even remember that guy being in the movie. I'm just kidding. The commentator is making a little joke there. Anyway, they just got back on the map though because Markiplier, the YouTuber who just put out Iron Lung this year, just became one of GoPro's biggest shareholders. Interesting. The YouTube creator and filmmaker acquired 13.5 million shares of GoPro giving him an 8.5% stake in the company. The position was officially disclosed in SEC filing on August 20th. The investment comes as Markiplier continues expanding beyond YouTube and deeper into filmmaking following the release of his feature film Iron Lung.

He also publicly praised GoPro's new Mission 1 camera city plans to use it in future projects it does look so sick. Markiplier isn't just using the tools AI AI. Markiplier isn't just using the tools. He's betting on the company making that. That's not just a camera. That's a filmmaking device. Someone commented on that said, stop posting about this. Watch his stream, listen to the podcast. He was set up and immediately regretted investing as soon as GoPro emerged with an AI company. Where do you see that? On the clip? It's just a comment on that post. Yeah. Really? I'd be curious if that's true. Can we dive into this? Yeah, that's interesting. Why would he regret it? So he did do it. Why would he do it? Now we got to watch. Did he use them to film his movie? Does he know something that we don't know? Like, why would you invest that much in GoPro? Yeah. Hey guys, Travis here just letting you know that sometimes on the show, I go a little bit longer. I try to keep these things, these solo shows pretty short, like 10 to 15 minutes. But sometimes when I get going, I just can't

stop. If you know what I mean. So this, if you're listening to this message, that means that this episode is being put into two parts. And the first part is now coming to a close. So be sure to tune into the next solo show to hear part two of this episode. Thanks for tuning in. Catch you next time. Sorry.
