Chris Tanev Out for Season, Maple Leafs Face Wild Card Battle

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Taniv underwent core muscle surgery this week and will miss the rest of the season. The 36 year old had already sat out the past 23 games due to a growing injury. Earlier this season, Taniv missed 27 of 28 games from late October through mid-December because of an upper body issue. That stretch included a scary moment when he left the ice on a stretcher. Coach Craig Barubi noted that Taniv pushed to return this year but it just was not possible. The surgery went well and he should be back for training camp in September. In 11 games played so far, Taniv picked up two assists. He is in the second year of a six year, 27 million dollar deal with Toronto, averaging 4.5 million annually. The Maple Leafs sit seventh in the Atlantic Division with a 27-24-10 record. They trail the Boston Bruins by nine points for the second wildcard spot in the east.
