It's April 26. This is Durham News Today, powered by AI. I'm Corey with the story. A Chicago cop named John Bartholomew, a 38-year-old with 10 years on the force, got fatally shot Saturday at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital. He was pronounced dead just before 1pm after the attack by a suspect they had in custody. The suspect was arrested earlier for robbery and taken to the hospital for a check-up. Things went south fast when he somehow got a gun, opened fire and bolted from the place. A second officer, 57 years old with 21 years of service, took a hit too and was still in critical condition the next day. Police superintendent Larry Snelling said the wounded cop was fighting hard for his life. This city is reeling from this, especially since these officers were just doing routine transport duty in a secure spot. Cops caught the suspect later and recovered three weapons from the scene. They haven't said how he smuggled the gun in, but hospital staff noted he was scanned on arrival and escorted the whole time.

This hits close to home for anyone in uniform, reminding us of the risks they face every shift. Stay safe out there, Chicago.
