And I am, I am just about ready. I know the first weeks are weird and the weather doesn't quite feel footbally. But it's in the air. I am, I'm ready as well. But the, I mean, the first two games I've watched so far this year have, have let me down quite a bit. Really. I, I hope that's some of the, some of the play we're going to see of the NFC teams here that are.

3:01Some favorites. These weeks are always weird, but I was thinking the same thing. If this is the cream of the NFC, they're the bears should feel like they're absolutely right in this thing. But yeah, very excited. And I haven't seen him yet. Right. Very excited about this first game bears at Carolina. They come in as a two and a half points road favorite. And I looked at this game and I have five areas, five matchups. I want to, I want to just focus on real quick here. As we break down this game for the first time this year. For me, it's a game of continuity versus renovation. The continuity part is on the bears offense. They come in as a top 10 offense, the number three rushing attack last year. And it's an offense that added pieces, Xavier and Thomas and Sam Rausch, Khalif Raymond. You still have the run attack of the Andre Swift who apparently has had a fantastic camp. And common on guy coming back being healthy. And looks like he's, he should be good to go for, for Sunday.

4:04Now they do have a new center, but I'm not concerned there in, in Garrett Bradbury. The only question mark I have in the offense is Braxton Jones. And I've been on this left tackle position as we've all talked about quite a bit. And it's, it's really interesting thinking about Braxton Jones. I know what he was, it was he a fourth or a fifth round pick. Fifth and fifth round pick. I made 44 starts in the NFL, Dan at left tackle. And yet still have a lot of question marks about Braxton Jones. So when it comes to the continuity versus renovation, continuity is on the bears offense of side. I'm looking forward to the bears offense taking multiple steps forward this year. And Ben Johnson being in his second year, not having to learn what it's like to run and be an NFL head coach. Caleb Williams, it's more of how can we progress what we've already learned? How can we add to the playbook instead of learning everything about the offense and the playbook that he needed to learn?

5:05The fundamentals of the offense were bad to start last year, just getting in and out of the huddle were bad. So I'm looking forward to this offense taking multiple steps forward. As far as the renovation part of this matchup, for me, that comes on the pan, the Panthers defense. They've added six new starters. Really? They've added, they had a lot of issues on defense last year and they threw a lot of money at things. And there's two guys I want to point out first. It was, Jaylin Phillips was the big spend. Jaylin Phillips was not only the big spend for the Panthers, but the big spend in free agency in the NFL, Dan. Yeah, I think it's an overpensure. I just want to absolute overpaired. I think he's good, but that was you can just say, well, that's what the market bore in that case. And that's what he got congratulations to him, nothing against him or his agent, but I think that is a classic free agency panic overspend. So they paid $120 million. That's the most of the free agent money in 2026. He had five sacks last year between Miami and Philadelphia.

6:07I agree with you that it wasn't overpaid, but sometimes that's what the market dictates dictates. He played, he played, um, Dicks takes. Well, Dictate, he's also doing the game. He's a sideline reporter. Dictate, take. Yeah. He'll also have a locker room. Yes, always has a thought for you. He always has something in his hand. Yeah. So Jaylin Phillips played 17 games three times of his five NFL seasons. And he did last year as well too, but only five sacks. But he's the big free agent spend for for the Panthers. They also brought in a Devon Lloyd, who was with the Jaguars the last four years. He was a first round pick in 2022, number 27 overall out of Utah. He was a second all pro team last year, five interceptions last year, one touchdown. The reason why I highlight those two guys, because obviously they spent a lot of money on Phillips. And he'll be going against the Bears right side.

7:07So it's not like he's going to get, you know, Braxton Jones. He lines up on the left side. He'll go against Darnell Wright. The right side of the line. We'll see how effective he can be. But Devon Lloyd is interesting because I think Devon Lloyd was brought in because the Panthers defense last year gave up a lot of yards to tight ends. And it was a big area of concern for their defense. Devon Lloyd is pretty good in coverage. Again, mentioned five. Deptures last year, one for a touchdown. Yeah, he does gamble a lot though. He does gamble a lot. And I'm really excited to see that matchup of Devon Lloyd. If he is going to go on. Colson Loveland and try to cover him coming out of yeah, good luck to that run right by him. I think so too. I think it's so it's a key matchup to keep an eye on. I think it's one that the Bears can exploit. Get some yards and really take advantage of it in the red zone as well too. So Devon Lloyd on on Colson Loveland. So there's five key areas that I have here. I want to just run through this game real fast.

8:08Number one, five key matchups to look at the Bears O line against Caroline is pass rush. Obviously again, a bunch of new starters. They've invested a lot of money and edge rush. So can the Carolina pass rush be effective against the Bears offensive line? And I know that they're going to scheme. They're going to do things to protect and chip with the tight end, whether it's Colt Comet or Sam Raus. If he gets any kind of playing time on the left side of the line to help out. Darnell, or I'm sorry. Braxton Jones and we also heard from Dan Rochart. Are you already said that Theo Benedict is an out of the mix. There's a possibility that Theo Benedict plays. Now to me that doesn't sound like a lot of confidence in your left tackle. But that's an option as well too. So we'll see what they do to help that left side of the line. I'm going to give the edge here to the Bears O line against the Carolina pass. Again, a bunch of new starters on defense. It's going to take time to gel. As you've already mentioned, you know, week one week two week three.

9:09It's kind of a weird feel out kind of a situation always. Even for the teams like the teams like the Bears that want to pride themselves on running a physical camp and Khalif Raymond talking about. We're call us to our call us to our call us. Yeah. But you can never be really ready for an NFL game after your training camp. No matter how hard you've practiced, there is always an adjustment to the real thing. The second area, the second matchup to look at are the Bears wide receivers versus Carolina secondary. And specifically JC Horn and Mike Jackson. This is also why I think it's going to be a big opportunity for Colson leveling Colt Comet to get some receptions at tight end and get some yards down field. JC Horn was number eight overall draft pick in 2021. He was healthy all of last year and had five interceptions. Mike Jackson came from Seattle in 2024. He had 19 passes defended last year.

10:09And that's tops in the NFL. So this might be an opportunity for them to do some things against maybe a not fully healthy Roma Dune's a second year player in Luther Burton. And we'll see what Xavier and Thomas does and how he's employed and used on the Bears offense here in week one. But again, I think with those two key quarterbacks and their ability, it's going to open up opportunities in the middle of the field. Between the hashes with the tight ends as well too. So we'll see how that plays out. And a third area are the Panthers wide receivers versus the Bears cornerbacks. So I think this is an opportunity here and this is probably the Panthers best opportunity for explosive place. Because I don't think you're going to see that come in the run game and I don't think you're going to see it come anywhere else outside of the wide receivers. Obviously, Tate's a real Macmillan 70 receptions last year over a thousand yards number eight overall pick last year. And he's going to be the key for them.

11:09Jalen Coker, his targets pretty even from, you know, last year overall in his career, his yards were down a little bit yards per an Xavier Ligette. While his targets were down last year, he still averaged over 10 yards per reception. So there's some opportunities there and I think this is going to be a big, a big key of the Bears defense against the Panthers possible explosive plays will come and will come again will come from their wide receivers. So we'll see how Dennis Allen has his secondary and his cornerbacks ready to attack the Panthers wide receivers, which I, which again, I believe is going to be the best opportunity for explosive plays. Number four is the Bears run game against the Carolina run defense. Now they're going to be really, really tough up the middle obviously. I'm going to see how they attack those edges and how they're able to extend plays outside the hash marks for deandre swift to get some yards and explosive plays in the run game. And the fifth area that we're going to keep an eye on are special teams, not just field goals, but field position. I'm really excited to see what high tower has for his unit and how they can impact the field and the field position and where the bear start off.

12:20I know their punt returns are kick returns. So those are some some key areas key matchups to keep an eye on for this game. Those five areas. I looked at things a little bit differently and my first thing is going to be 90 minutes before the game really curious about the game day roster. About looking at positionally and who's active, who's inactive and I'm trying to think about this defensive tackle rotation and the defensive ends. So I've seen a lot of Neville galimore in the bears social media. I can say that. I haven't seen a lot of contavious street and a lot of great. But every time I pick up my phone of the bears are putting something out there, they love themselves some level galimore. So if he's he's he's been very, very front facing when it comes to a lot of their public stuff. So I want to see if he can back a lot of that up on the field. And obviously we're all excited about the possibilities for Jordan vandedberg and those are your two backups right now, not to mention that Austin Booker and Daniel Hardy.

13:27We know Hardy is going to be active because he's a critical special teams player and always good for a penalty. That's the other thing is active and aggressive as he is. He's got to cut down the penalties this year. But how do they rotate these defensive linemen? Is that's going to tell me a lot. And how long of a leash do they give some of their starters that what is Dennis Allen want to see, especially when it's hot. We learn about the rotations mattering. So my my expectations a lot of these guys are active. So I am looking at that. And the role of dunes, I think it's huge to me. Is he getting separation? Because one thing he was not real good at last year was catches in traffic. And I don't know if they necessarily drafted him to run by people as much as they did to make some of those plays to know that there's going to be safety help coming over the top against the X to know that he's going to have to find a way to position himself in zones.

14:33And to frankly be more open. If he can't run like he used to, that's going to make it tough. Are we going to see anything in the play calling or play design that takes some of the pressure off his speed. And then the athleticism, will there be more back shoulder stuff? Will they find him more settling into zones? I don't know. We're post injury. Now we've got to start gathering data on what he is and how effective he can be. So I'm looking really closely at that. And then the running back mix. Is it 60 40s at 70 30? How many see do they give him a young guy a full series? They give him two with the first half. I want to see the distribution. And then personnel packages too. That always when they break that huddle and you see them line, okay, okay, you're watching the substitutions. I know sometimes on TV, you're not going to see the substitutions as well.

15:33And then the game and why and when and how many times do they let Sam Rausch do Durham's my stuff and how many times they letting him do some of the call comments stuff. I don't know, but this, this is everything is new. Right. And I love all the comments there are the questions that you ask as well too. But the thing that's interesting about it is it really is a fluid situation as we talk about how these how the season starts off. We saw what happened last year. That they just they weren't a very good run team and they ended up being the third best rushing attack in the league. And it was after that by week and Ben Johnson put an emphasis on what they were going to do and talked about how these veteran players, even though they're veteran players need to learn how to work together and gel a little bit. That was a big thing they talked about these guys jelling together and we saw that happen. I think your questions are correct about the rotation as far as the defense of line is concerned. That's going to be fluid. You know, and how that works and how who eventually emerges as the starters and gets more snaps than the other guys and who ends up serving more as rotation piece or give a guy a breather piece or is it a full rotation of just rotating guys in and out to keep bodies fresh will will a guy or two emerge.

16:50Well, it's I like great. And I think if you know when the time said and done we're going to look back at that and say well they overpaid for a guy who wasn't as productive as you wanted to be. I'm really hoping that what I saw at the end of last year. I see at the start of this year that carries through that he can stay healthy and not just be a vocal leader but be a leader on the field that's actually making impact in the run game. That that's what I need to see from great to Jared. I don't know what to expect. I know I know it's hard. I thought the signing was a little desperate at the time and I didn't like the fact that when you start to hear from like a former pro bowl player and you start to hear teams talking about a locker room leadership. No, I don't want to hear that. I want to hear he's an ask kicker and he's out there beating people up and disrupting and doing all those things. We heard that last year and I agree with you on it but he just he wasn't healthy. He wasn't healthy so that those 33 year old is I know I know I know no that's that's a that's a fair question.

17:54But I just I don't want to hear this year about how and I know he's a team captain from the defense and I don't want to hear about what he does off the field. Exactly. I don't want to hear any about it. All I want to say I want to see with my eyes on my TV. That's what I want to see. When I talk about great to Jared, I don't want to hear about what he's doing off the field to help this team or young players. I want to see impact on the field. And again, we saw it. We started seeing it a little bit at the end. I need to see it right now. I need to see it against Carolina to have that impact. But yeah. And as far as Roman Dunez is concerned, Dan, I want to find out that calf injury if it's the same leg of that foot injury. Because it that makes me nervous thinking about it last night and how we talked about color Murray and you know there's that. Color Gordon or color Murray. Color Gordon. I'm sorry Jesus. I said color Murray. I did the same thing. Okay. Color Gordon and how we talked about how you know an injury in the groin leads into you know a hamstring and a hamstring down and there's that that that chain.

18:57And I'm just concerned about Roman Dunez is that foot. Yeah. Maybe you know people said in camp he looked great and he looked great running against his own team. But is that foot causing him to walk differently to run differently? Is it is it is he is he compensating in a way that's causing that calf injury. Could that calf injury rise up into a knee injury into a hamstring maybe a quad. You know, I just I'm concerned about that. And I don't want to have those concerns going in the week one. Or do I the good news is they have plenty of wide receivers. Yes, we talked we also talked about that two days ago. And if John I Walker wants to say, Hey, give me a series here and I can do some of those things. Fine. It would be unfair to write off Roman Dunez. But it would also be wrong to make presumptions about the condition that he's in a pond return from an injury that he did say was affecting him. Yeah, we we mentioned a couple days ago when we said that he needs to just catch more passes that at least with the number 10 pick.

20:00We're not counting on him to be the guy. He doesn't have to be the guy in this crowded and potentially very talented wide receiver room. I'll also say the other thing to be to watch to and this I know Ben Johnson a couple of times last year did this. If you win the toss defer. If you win the toss defer and then figure don't don't win the toss and take the ball because we need to go to get our offense on the field and all that. You're more likely to win if you defer and you have a chance to double up and you have that control over the game and control over the clock and a way you wouldn't otherwise have. Yeah, and there's two other areas and this is not just for this game, but this is for the season. How I want to see this offense. Progress and evolve to areas. The end of the second quarter going into halftime and red zone touchdown efficiency. I need to see them be better at getting touchdowns and I think and I and that's something they need to improve on and without even knowing I bet you've been

21:02doing this but a lot of time. This off season figuring out with the talented roster that he has what they can do to be more impactful and getting touchdowns and less field goals in the red zone and being better and being more fish and closing out the first half of games because they were not very good last year. Yeah, and when in doubt run over Darnell right. This is behind him. That's what I mean. It's a simple guy. The in Jonah Jackson and Darnell right on that side of the field and whether or not you're having somebody else coming around there that I when you say what do what can you count on what can you do. I am I am pretty pleased with the power and the ground power of that right side. So I'm never going to complain if you say look we're going to we're going this way. Put your head down and go get a few yards for us. Yeah, so there are and it doesn't might not be an explosive. I know that Ben Johnson if I'm saying, I don't know we don't do that.

22:04We if we happen to get five or six yards that's fine but we're trying for 30. However you want to put it that's fine but I don't think we need to get too fancy if you if you're in a need situation. Yep. Agreed. Every headline hides a deeper story. Jotie on all 20 counts. It's it's average net yards or excuse me, adjusted net yards per attempt. Yep. A and Y over a adjusted net yards per attempt. That's something we'll talk about a lot as we go through the rest of the season. Because it allows you to be somebody responsible for explosives and doing things with your legs as well as your army. It's not just efficiency. It's say we really got to look at a lot of these quarterback stats that are just measuring the quarterbacks efficiency, which is only one prism through which to measure a quarterbacks quality.

24:16So it is a and Y over a. Yesterday's injury report to as it came out after we were done recording a couple new names, but two guys were you know veteran guys were just getting rescue Jared Joe Tony. The only new name as far as injury was concerned was Xavier Woods with a groin who was limited in practice yesterday. Of course, Roman Dunes a Aussie, Chippell O and Tyson Beijing. We're still on the list from the day before. Dunes a with the calf, Chippell O with his knee and I also want to mention what Dan Rochara had to say about Aussie, Chippell O. That they expect him to be competing in team drills shortly. Okay. Like that is insane to me. That's incredible. I mean, when we when this happened and we talked about it that particular terror.

25:16I think you gave the stat that half the guys don't come back from that injury. And this dude came back what six, seven months early. And he's getting ready to do team drills and he's not he's not even wearing a knee brace. It's pretty remarkable. I mean, the advancements that are being made right now in sports medicine are it's everywhere you look that the the previous time tables are now all in question. They're ruining it for everybody. We thought it was only somebody like Adrian Peterson or Russell Westbrook or these guys that just had extraordinary healing powers. And now the science is better. The medicines better and the science is better. And apparently Aussie Chippell has been working his ass off too. He was one of those guys that then Johnson was talking about when he had that group of most of our guys are almost all our guys are working their tails off to get back. It takes the the the patients contribution and the patients desire to come back in that regard is and is obviously a huge part of it.

26:22And maybe that's why they're not as you know, doom and gloom about the left tackle position is maybe I've been over the off season. So maybe or are they just like Braxton Jones more than everyone else does. And I think that guard center guard with the quarterback that they have. I mentioned this before is is more significant to them because they don't mind. And you know, you saw this a little bit with Drake May in that game just how bothered he was by some of that direct pressure. I got to do it. Yeah, we talked about that watching the game. Yes. And I have you blitzed a gap and a gap or or be gap or with with with four. What they did was they rushed under control. And it sounds easy. But there are guys who if their motor has to be revved into the red line to do what they have to do.

27:22It's harder to adjust the best athletes and the most disciplined athletes. If you can combine discipline with athleticism and be able to rush under control that you're not caught off guard by a draw or a screen or an extra little hitch. They kept their lanes disciplined. They didn't they kept contain they kept eyes on him even when they were coming in a rushing hard through those gaps that you're talking about. It's it's the same principle as in basketball closing out on a three point shooter without being on skates. Closing out with the ability to stop. It's a very similar combination of athleticism and discipline. And that's why with Caleb Williams they can count on the fact that if they are really crashing on those edges and bending and turning trying to get right at him. It's not that hard for him to just kind of spin away. Right. And it's something we talked about with Jordan Van den Berg as as much hype as there has been so far for the for the six round pick.

28:27It's that conference that that conversation that's conservation conservation of body movement. If he can learn that with the natural ability that he has and his strength and his skill set. If he can learn that conservation of body movement to stay under control that's going to be very helpful in his NFL game. And we saw we saw Seattle do that to be able to conserve their movement so wasn't so out of control and so wild. But they really impacted Drake May going up the middle in that those a gaps the big gaps and getting up there and forcing him out. Man, he does he looked terrible. Oh, there's some really incredible stats. I wish I would have jotted them down about the Patriots. I think he's like, Oh, Oh, and Oh and 12 or maybe it was even worse than that against teams with 500 with a record of 500 or better. It's just yeah, there's some really incredible stuff that came out after that game to really show that maybe all of last year. Wasn't just you know how great the Patriots played, but sort of that schedule and the advantage of the opponents that they had.

29:33So I was glad to see see that I mean not glad to see that game. I'm glad to see the Patriots lose. That's for sure. He's going to be better. He's going to be even better. He's he's clearly clearly has the things you can't coach. But I just want a little less is a little more. Let it breathe. And if you were go if you were at 11, take it down to 8, save some room for some of those other spots of the intensity level. And and after a play, he had there was so much. He was so densely packed, which can be fine for analysis can be fine. It have to. But during a

31:37game, give me one, maybe two important notes from that play. So he's got it all. And now he's just got to got to get reps. He's got to get actual live reps, but he's going to be really good. Yeah, I agree with that. Really is. So here are the teams for this year. Okay. And we want to start a boxer CBS. Let's start with Fox because enjoy those more. All right. Fox games. Your number one crew is Kevin Burkhart and Tom Brady. Okay. The number two team is he's he's he's gotten better. Yeah. He's gotten better. So he's put in the work. He's gotten better. Okay. Number two team is Joe Davis and Greg Olson. Okay. Love Greg Olson. Right. My favorite team possible is Burkhart and Olson, but they broke that up. The next team is Adam Amin and Drew Breeze. I can't recall hearing Drew Breeze. Drew Breeze replaced Mark Sanchez. Yeah. We'll see. I mean,

32:43we know Adam's great. Yeah. I think Breeze, he's he's too smart to be bad. Okay. And we've heard him talk before. He's not going to end up being Joe Montana. The number four Fox team is Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma. I don't mind that. I don't mind that. I like I like Jonathan Vilma. Yeah. The fifth team is Kevin Kugler and Darryl Johnston. Oh, he's done 15. They're five. Yeah, that's that's a good. Jonathan team. And number six, when needed is Chris Myers and Mark Schlerath. I'm good. That's about replacement level there. He sounds like a very serious I and Eagle. Yeah. I hear I hear a little Jim Nance. Okay. And I mean, that is a compliment for sure.
