2:01The domain that I bought just for fun because I thought it was funny. I'm joined as I always did by Laura Sabah. Also known as The Actors Stick. Laura, we were about to tune into rookie camp. It's as you're listening to this, it starts tomorrow on Thursday. We wanted to dedicate all of Thursday's show to the Atlantic Division preview. That's coming. Very excited to be able to get that to you guys. Lots of takes. The takes will be flying in that episode. We have to focus a little bit of our energy today on the rookie camp roster. When you look at the roster that the Canadians published a few days ago. It's not that great. There's a reason for that. It has to do with the fact that these players, a lot of the Canadians top eligible are top prospects are ineligible to play in this tournament. Correct. I was about to say it's not GrowmashDeswar season yet. It's pretty much the Swal. A little match. A little match. We've been spoiled with the rookie tournament the past few years.

3:06It's partly because a lot of these players can't play in the tournament. We'll get into a second. I think we've graduated beyond the years and years and years of hanging all our hopes on the rookie showcase or the preseason where we're looking at the future of this team because the future is finally now. Yes. That's part of it. A lot of the Canadians top prospects have graduated from these games. I was a little shocked that that Fowler wasn't included in this. He's in on each other now. He's a tweener. I think the Canadians, if they had their way, he's going to end up in LaValle. Yes. Also, the athletic had a calder trophy candidate. Jacob Fowler was one of them. I think he was listed as number eight. He's not going to get close to sniffing that. There's too many players in the way. I thought it was really interesting because all the conversations we have that elephant in the room of the three goalies is still not determined. We won't know until November what's going to happen with that.

4:11Yeah. Truly. But looking at this roster, most of the Canadians prospects have already made the jump or are ineligible for this. Maybe they probably can't ask going back to do this for a ninth time is what it would feel like. The other reason is that a lot of the Canadians players are just simply ineligible. Hage is playing in the NCAA. He's not going to come over and play in this. Gleb Pogachev and Alexander Zorovsky are over in the KHL. They are ineligible to play this. They do not have contracts. Even if they did, most likely, they would keep them over there. Same thing with Bogdan Kinyushkov, although I think he's a bit older, not eligible to play in this. I think it's too if they run civ was a player they drafted in this past draft. He's not eligible for this as well. He's in the NCAA. A lot of the Canadians, a lot of the names that you're familiar with at this point in the Canadians development are not eligible to play.

5:11But there's still some interesting names here. For me, at Ford, I have two guys circled. I have Tyler Thorpe. This is a player the Canadians have signed to a contract. His entry level deal kind of shocks some people when they made that signature because he's such a raw player that he's huge. He has an NHL caliber shot and it's just a wonder of whether or not the rest of the game will catch up. I'm very curious to see how he looks strictly in a group not necessarily of his peers, but maybe a group that he should actually be a little bit above from a development sense. I'm curious to see if he has the ability in these rookie camp games to take over in a sense. In these rookie tournament games, they are playing the Winnipeg Jets. And of course, how could we forget the Ottawa Senators? They're always playing the Ottawa Senators in these games. We will never get away from the Ottawa Senators.

6:12No, and this is like, I just, I'll leave my own biases out in the open. I think these rookie tournaments, these rookie showcases are crap. I think the hockey is bad because none of these guys have played together and it's their first organized hockey they've played in months. On top of that, there's always a guy or two on every team, the Ottawa Senators, who's trying to make a name for himself by being a moron. In years past, the Canadians have played games against the Ottawa Senators and somebody on one of those teams starts something. The only difference is in years past, the Canadians have had guys named Arbor and Florian Shackai who have messed a lot of stuff up in those games. I think that these are just invitations for injury. Like Jake Evans got blown up in a rookie camp game. Like it's so silly to me personally, but I will leave that as I don't want to soapbox on this anymore.

7:14The other, I want to mention one more forward. Alexander Legkopf, who I only mentioned because his journey to this point is so peculiar. Alexander Legkopf was invited to the development camp after the draft. He is a, and let me just check the numbers on this so I'm not lying. He's a 22 year old forward from Russia listed as a centerman, not particularly. Actually, he's 6'2", so he's got some size to him. But the reason I mentioned it, he was playing for the dandary hat tricks of the Federal Crossbex Hockey League, which is also known as very close to where I live. I could go see this player if he ends up being returned to that team. Although I imagine if the Canadians decide they want to offer him a contract, it will come with some guarantee that he'll play in a league that actually kind of matters. But I find it so fascinating that they've offered him a deal or that they've offered him this opportunity to come and play for them because like, who is this guy? How did you even find out about this guy? Were you watching Federal Crossbex Hockey League?

8:16Did you guys have scouts in Danbury, Connecticut? What happened? I'm very curious. I hope he ends up signing just so we can talk to the Canadians. Like, how did this happen? I'm genuinely kind of like, I'm very interested in what this kid's story looks like. Anybody else that forward that stands out to you? Not really, to be honest. The players that I really would have wanted to see just aren't going to be in this tournament. We're in this like, like, win now mode. We're in this like, make the team now mode. So I think, you know, this tournament isn't really going to tell me anything that I want to know. I feel like, but I've missed the have so much that I'm just excited that there's going to be games. Yeah, same. On defense, the two names I'm watching are Luke Minnowsett played a little bit last year with Laval and Owen Prats. Another, that's, Owen Prats is probably the highest level, like the most how-to-prost effectiveness. This showpiece for the Canadians, like, so I'm interested to see how he performs there

9:17as well. In net, our standing Radcoff is a guy that I have my eye on. It'll leave you as playing in the queue for a little bit. So again, it's slim pickings. And honestly, if you're a fan of these rookie showcase games, first of all, I'm sorry for dogging on the thing that you like. I didn't mean to do that. I was just speaking my truth. You can have your own podcast where you can speak yours. But if you're, you can yell at us in the comments. Or you can yell at me in the comments. I don't care. But I think this is sort of going to be what these look like from now on. Yeah. But maybe next year, Pugachev is there. Orzirovsky? Orzirovsky is there. But like, there's a lower threshold for playing in these games. It's going to very much feel like, okay, these are just a bunch of guys who are going to fill out the Laval rocket. That's going to be the case for these games. So enjoy this one for what it is.

10:18Maybe, I mean, it's possible that next year, Michael Hage is playing in this, right? It's possible that at the end of this year, he signs his contract, but he doesn't actually play a ton. And then they're like, you know what, we want you to go to the rookie camp. We want you to go through the grinder there, so to speak. I think it's quite possible. But at that point, we will have already kind of potentially seen Michael Hage in a Canadian's uniform. And these games are always so silly. I always kind of like, I find it funny that they wear the actual uniforms. I think the Maple Leafs do it where they don't. They wear like practice uniforms. And I kind of appreciate that because at least it gives the right impression about what these games are, which is not the Toronto Maple Leafs and not the Montreal Canadians. This is just a bunch of kids who are happening, who happen to be part of the organization. Yeah, I mean, I get that, but I also, I don't know. I'm more on the other side of that, and I don't know, we're running out of time, so I don't want to get into like a huge debate. But I'm on the other side of that because I feel like that gives you a taste because for the Toronto philosophy is like, you haven't earned it yet. But like I don't like like my management style is very millennial.

11:22I'm not like that. Like so for me, like it's the Habs are like giving you a taste. This is what it's like to be a Montreal Canadian to like, you know, have like the team take care of you like this. This is your dressing room. This is where you play all that kind of stuff. So I'm on the other side of that. I think that it, that they do deserve to wear the jersey if that makes sense. Yeah, but I get what you're saying. It's like it's not the Habs. Yeah, and I think that's what tricks a lot of people. Like a lot of people react to this as if it matters in any meaningful sense. And it's just an opportunity for the team to see how these guys summer went or did they work on the things that we wanted them to work on, how far along are they in their development. That's really all they are. All right, we'll leave that there. And we come back, we shift gears. We're going to look at the Metro. We're getting closer to the Atlantic. We're not quite there yet. I want to talk about who's hot, who's not in the Metro, and whether or not the Canadians should have a ton of trouble with all of these teams. That won't be the case soon. But eight teams in the Metro. It's already driving me crazy. It's going to be a lot cited. I can't deal with it. I can't. We must we must persevere. Yes. The is it's fair to say I think that the Carolina hurricanes remain at the top of everyone's list in that division until they are dethroned. Yes. It's it's theirs. They have that opportunity. I think their kings everywhere.

14:24I think you know, the Colorado Avalanche to me in the West, I think the Canes in the East and I think it remains. I think that's going to remain for a while. Yeah. As much as as much fun as the cup final was this year, Canes abs would have just been incredible. Incredible. Awesome. I think that's so sweet. If that has to be there this year, let's run it back this year. I want to see it. Yeah. That's exactly what I was going to say. If the halves are not in the Stanley Cup final, which we do have to talk about tomorrow, I would I want to see a calves. And the calves. Canes abs. Yeah. It's a ship. Yeah. A calves final. Yeah. I will say after this, it's kind of a jump ball. Yeah. It is. The measure is not a particularly strong division, but I think in my approximation, there's two teams that I have making the playoffs as the two and three seats. Are they new Jersey and Washington? Yes, but flippable. I have Washington is the two. I like as much as like a lot of times teams make a lot of noise for no reason in the

15:27off season. They make good moves. I don't even know like I think most of them are good moves. I don't really know that I understand the Boon-Generic acquisition. But I think like their their goal needs to be to win one more with OV and that might just be this last year. Yeah. Like it might just be this upcoming year. And for that, like you have to at least tip your cap at the focus. However, the rest of the moves kind of rock. Yeah. They got Jordan Kairu for next to nothing from from the St. Louis Blues. They bring in Alex talk like this is a team that I think is going to be very, very good last year. They were injured and just things didn't work out. I think this is a very good hockey team in Washington. And I'm kind of annoyed by that. Yeah, I agree. It is going to be a problem for the Montreal Canadians down the line. But I like what they did and that right. It was OV was on the fence. He was probably always coming back to be honest like the noise that was going around. I think he was going to come back for one more year. So when that conversation happened where it's like one more year that Washington Capitol sat down and they're like,

16:29what are all the things we can do to maximize our chances given that you know the leegus tough, etc, etc. This doesn't guarantee them a win. But it allows them to at least have a playoff run with OV. Yeah. I think that was. It's it's nice to have moments like that that sort of clarify your focus. Right. The caps had one singular focus. It was we're going to try to win with you. Is there a mind to me of like when the when the blue jackets went all in the talk about a team that's further down on this list. Like when they went all in when they had Buprovsky in the last year of his deal and penaren in the last year of his deal. And then they're like, OK, let's get. Let's get Matt to shame bring him in here and remember Ryan to single. We got him to the run the same plane remember that picture was so funny. They they they they recognize the situation they found themselves in. And they said we're going to make the best of this. Like OV might might play one more year. He might have another one left in the tank. We'll see what ends up happening. But like this singular.

17:31Purpose has focused their their their their aims, which I think is is helpful for a lot of teams don't have that singular focus. So the capitals they acted on it in a reasonable way. And what I really appreciate them about them, which you know we talk about this a lot. A lot of teams don't know what they are. They think they're better than they are. They're not ready to rebuild the caps are like we know what we are and we know we need to be better. So here are the things that we're going to do in the market that's available to us. And this is like that's exactly what they did. And I think the talk signing for me was one of the biggest ones like the the Kyru we need to praise that for what it is. It was an incredible move like an economically sound move for them as well. But that took move like not only acquiring him, but taking him away from Buffalo to like that's another like so for me like I think that that was a really big one. I appreciate what they're going to be. And I think I think it's possible that you know if Carolina runs into an upset that they come out of that division.

18:33Yeah, it's possible. This is a Metro division final like genuinely. To the other the other playoff team that I have coming out of the Metro here is the New Jersey Devils. This is a team that has taken a lot of lumps recently they just they get injured a ton. I think the team of Meyer acquisition hasn't worked out like they thought it would. But I think there's still a ton of talent on this roster. You know, if Timo has a decent season, you have him Jack Hughes, still a phenomenal player again when healthy. Yes, we're brought one of the young one of the most underrated forwards in the league. Nico, he sure curse you for staying in Newark, New Jersey. You could have had it all here. You could have been a god anyway. But I really did like I really did like the Anthony man to pick up. Yes. They get him at a really economical deal under $5 million for two years. This is a guy who scored a ton of goals and he's I would imagine going to score a ton of goals for the New Jersey Devils. I just think this team there's been a lot of false starts.

19:35I think they're ready to take that next step. I also think I think their defense is actually quite good like. Like yeah, Dougie Hamilton takes a lot of crap, but he's quite good. Luke Hughes is young and he's still good, right? Like Dougie Hamilton everywhere he's been has been a decent defender and has been nothing but crapped on the entire time. You know, his exit in Boston was crazy. They call them up and he and they kicked him out because he liked to go to museums. Like yeah, I find that they hate on this player to be with. Yeah, I just like want you know, there's lots of new hockey fans and new hats fans and listening to this because again, he did rivalry, etc, etc. Like hockey's having a moment. So if you are new to this, Dougie Hamilton was crapped on because he liked instead of partying to go to museums when they were on the road. Like Dougie Hamilton can read. He's a hockey player who can read and he got crapped on. That's another deep not deep cut, but definitely a cut from this show and others like it is like hockey players who can read. I believe that came from my buddy J over at Lockdown Blue Jackets.

20:35We love J. The rest of the defense like Luke Hughes Brett Pesci, John of the Cove is savage. Like this is a good hockey team. I think the one Achilles heel might be in net. They have Jake Allen sign for four more years at 1.8, which I think is just like the numbers fine, but why that long he's 36. Right. I took that. It's crazy. I love Jake Allen. I will always love Jake Allen. I will write or die for Jake Allen or whatever it is you want to say, but he's a backup opener. Yeah, I think there are two jisdee devils need to be in on Connor, hellabuck. They need to be in on him. I couldn't agree more. Like I think that that is exactly the kind of player that they need. The problem is they don't have any cap space. They're at 1.8. Yeah, that's all they got left. At the deadline they'll have 8.5. That's, is that enough to get hellabuck there? Maybe like there's there's there's a deal to be worked out there. But yeah, I think we can pick up a cat at the like if they do end up giving up players to make room for for for Connor.

21:42So Anthony, man, if it doesn't have trade protection either does Dawson, Mercer, Arthas, Ardom, Grisjuck. They signed Evan Rodrieks as well to a 1 year deal. I think that's a pretty, or did they trade for him? They got him somehow. I can't remember how. You know, it's it's slim pickens. As far as draft capital goes, they have two firsts in this upcoming draft. So if Winnipeg decides that that's the way they want to go, that would make sense. I just think this devil's team has been good enough from a construction standpoint to make a push for the playoffs and they just can't stay healthy. Eventually, all of those, you know, eventually they'll they'll roll the right numbers here to get in right to get that injury luck to get into the playoffs. So considering the rest of the teams that we'll talk about in our final segment, I think all kind of taking steps back or lateral moves. I think I think that's this is as good a chance as the devils will have so. The stuff aside, yeah, go ahead. Last thing before we go to break. I think it would be really funny if the Habs trade them some on top of that.

22:44That's another one I don't hate like I don't hate that for Sam. I don't hate that for the devils. Like I think that gives them a tandem at very least one piece, Nario. And Sam finds himself in a tandem with Jake. Yeah, I don't hate that look. I don't know why NHL GM say trading is hard like we've come up with a bunch of good ones just on this show alone. Alright, we'll leave it there. We'll step aside when we come back. We'll take a look at the rest of the Metro division. But who's not a category. I'm going to figure out can the Habs beat anyone in this division will get into that in just a minute here on locked on Canadians. Because I have two teams in the playoffs that were not in the playoffs from this division last year, and I believe the Metro will only send three teams this year because of how strong the Atlantic is.

24:57There are two teams that made the playoffs that I don't have in this year, one of them being the Philadelphia Flyers, who I think are fine. Like I don't mind that team. I think they'll I think it's funny. They might take a step forward from a development standpoint and take a step back in the standings. I think I think the capitals are just that much better than them. And I think that the devil is have a chance to be that much better than them. But I still like I love the group that they're building. Porter Marton. I've I described to a friend of mine as the Biblically accurate Philadelphia flyer. Like that guy is build your franchise around him type personality. I like what they're doing. I just don't I don't I'm not a huge believer in like their immediate talent. I think a lot of it's still to come. I think I think the problem is like they have lots of strong pieces. I just think the problem is the other three teams are so much better and then the teams in the Atlantic are going to overtake them in the standings. Yeah, totally. So right after them, I had the penguins. I don't I don't believe in them.

26:00I don't I don't know that they believe in themselves. Like you look at what they're they're doing. I mean, I know they had to sign Maulkin because the year he had, but at the beginning of last year, they said, this is Maulkin's last year in Pittsburgh. He's not coming back. Yeah. And then he's like, actually, I'm still good. And they're like, Oh, wait, we like him. It was very weird how all of that rolled out. I think like you look up and down this roster and they're just they're just okay. There's nothing in here that jumps off the page. Just like, yes, this needs this is a team that will make the playoffs. And then the defense still scares me. Like Carlson's great. Carlson's also also on the last year of his deal, making 10 million bucks. And man, some team is going to fall over themselves to get him for a playoff run, I think. I think so too, but also like he had a phenomenal year last year. He was also who's to say he still has that in the tank. Right? Like he's getting older. It's true. And I mean, you go, you look maybe right after him on the depth chart.

27:00And then he's like, I'm not going to say anything. I was really on the wrong side of his career. Yeah, he's 39 with two more years left. And really, I know penguins fans have not been overly thrilled with Chris Lattang in his, you know, recent years, just as the brainfarts, the mistakes were very like uncharacteristic of him. So that I have some text. I don't believe in this defense. I'm not going to put you on blast on the show, but you know you had that sentiment and I have it in my inbox. Yeah. Anyway, I have the islanders, the Rangers and the blue jackets rounding out this division. I think the islanders are doing exactly what they should be, which is nothing. Yeah, like they're building around Matthew Schaefer. There's no reason for them to commit long term money or do anything stupid. Nobody do anything dumb and we'll get to where we're headed. Yeah, because they will be on the right. It's right. Like I think it'd be really fun if they make the playoffs, like the in the mix conversation we had, you know, a couple of years ago, it'd be fun for them.

28:07But I just don't think that's happening this year. But I also just think that like they're setting themselves up for a longer contending window this way. Totally, totally. And then I have the Rangers. I don't know whether the Rangers are coming and going. They added Pavlovore Fave. Very good player. Like I think that that's a he's a fun goal scorer in this league. But I just I'm not. I'm not convinced either. There are so many people convinced by the end of the season that Alexi Lafranier had. And then when the games didn't matter anymore and I'm sort of like how many times we're going to keep falling for this. How many times is he going to like play just well enough for us to like, uh, and then by Thanksgiving next year you guys are running a matter of time. Like I'm kind of that conversation is boring to me, tired of being made to believe that he's turned a corner. Let me know what it happens. It hasn't happened yet. And then the Columbus Blue Jackets. I just feel bad for a fan base. I just feel bad for.

29:08I don't. We just right before we started recording we read a report from Aaron Portsline that said Adam Fentilly didn't show up for the team's goal. The teams camp opening golf outing. He doesn't have a contract for next year. Like it just seems like it they're going from one of these to the next. It was Marchenko at the draft and then immediately afterwards it was Werenzky and now it's Fentilly. And none of those things are resolved. I know if it or Werenzky they did the whole, you know, everything's fine. We're going to work this out. I'm leaving out for the kids, but that's sort of what it felt like. I just I'm really I don't. That organization has never been in the right direction. There was one time when they did right and it was what they swept the tape of a lightning. That was really it. Like there hasn't there's the. So upset the Toronto made beliefs and I think it was the playoff plans in Colby. It was the qualifiers. Yeah, which I just think we should all delete from our memory because I don't know that it mattered all that matters that they beat Toronto.

30:10That's fair. And Montreal beat Ketsberg and Yate was good. Does Montreal have problems with any of the teams in this division? I'll give you some stats. There's only one team Montreal was not at least 500 against last year from this division. Do you know what Washington wasn't Washington? They were 500 points percentage wise against Washington. It was the Philadelphia flyers. They picked up one point against the flyers last year in three games in three games. Yeah, I think Washington is going to give them trouble this year. I think so too. Also the demons that the peak of their powers just a few years ago. They were such a pain to deal with. Yeah, and I think we're headed back there. And it'll be interesting to see how the Canadians have grown since the last time the capital is we're at that point. Yeah, I want to see that's a that is a measuring stick game.
