Plus news. In today's episode we are continuing our impending Doomsday series each week. We are revisiting one of the 15 properties Marvel has highlighted as essential viewing before Avengers Doomsday. We started with X-Men and X-2. So if you haven't heard those, you can find them in this feed or the impending Doomsday feed. But first let's start with some interesting facts about Captain America, the first Avenger. Chris Evans. They really had to chase this guy because he turned down the role twice before accepting Marvel's first offer was a nine. Nine picture deal. He passed. Marvel came back with about six. He passed again. He accepted on the third approach.

4:04Evans has attributed his refusals to anxiety and to doubt about whether he wanted to keep acting in general, not just like acting as Captain America, telling the Hollywood reporter that he had woken up the day after saying no and felt good about it both times. Sebastian Stan actually auditioned for the role of Steve Rogers, which was a trend that would happen in the MCU. And he had originally not tested for the character ego. It was in early 2010 for casting directors Sarah Finn and Randy Hilly, Kevin Feige and Stephen Brassad subsequently met with him about Bucky and Feige walked him through Ed Brubake as run, which we know is hugely influential and went soldier Stan quoted in Marvel's authorized studio history. I am extremely grateful I got this role and not the Captain America role. I looked at it like it was meant to be both Stan and Evans are confirmed for Doomsday 16 years after that screen test.

5:05Wow. Crazy. 11:59Here we go. Captain America, the first Avenger. It's so nice to be back in phase one. I was like, this is a good movie. I'm going to say it's a good movie. Joe Johnston, the director of the tier. He did the thing. It's a great period piece. It feels honestly kind of ironic because to say brave because this is kind of a propaganda movie. But it feels like a big swing for a studio to make a movie like Iron Man and then make a movie like this. It's the thing that the MCU does best it lets directors do what they think is best for the story. And I think it's aged very well. We open to the Arctic present day two men from Washington have just arrived to investigate it anomaly in the ice discovered by the Russian oil team and whatever it is. It's very, very big. Some kind of aircraft. They cut a hole through the hall dropped down into the icy interior of the vehicle. It is just massive and they discover something of historic proportions. It is Captain America's iconic star spangled shield.

13:03The one of the DC guys gets on the horn says get the kernel on the line right now. We go to Tonzburg, Norway March 1942. Johann Schmidt and the forces of Hydra bash their way into this ancient castle and Schmidt has been searching for something for a very long time and he believes that he's now finally found the hiding place of this legendary object of immense power. Walter phrase there and he tries to trick Schmidt to accepting like a glass. Cosmic cube. Yeah, I'm afraid. Totally free. But the Schmidt. What if I was to destroy the nearby village and so phrase like, OK over there points at the magnificent carving of. Hydra seal the world tree and Schmidt pushes a button there opens a drawer and finds the glowing cube which we don't actually see at that moment.

14:07No, we just see like Pope fiction blue light. Yes highlighting his faces has meanwhile the few little digs trinkets and the dance out giving us the first hint that Schmidt and the fewer the more they're not exactly on the same wavelength throughout this. The old man Walter Frey is like you can't control the power holding you full your burn it says I already have and then he shoots the guy and then as his forces open fire on the village anyway. Yes, digging for trinkets in the desert is that Indiana Jones reference and definitely it's right. I mean the occult Nazi hunts were well known historically and I kind of forgot how much this leads into that but that definitely did feel like a little Indiana Jones not I agree with you yes historically they the Nazis were looking for weird shit all over but yes this really felt like a. Raiders of the lost art happens like we got a Brooklyn Steve Rogers is 90 pound weakling at the elisman office once again for the fifth time we discover lying once again trying to get into the office once again no dice no interesting thing I want to put a pin in for later.

15:29Steve you know you kind of like hold up Steve especially in the MCU like other characters do they look at him as this boy scout this paragraph virtue he lies a lot in this movie yeah and maybe that's something to think about as we head into doomsday hyper budget. It could be I agree with that we'll talk about that in the final segment Steve. You know just he drowns the source by going to the movies they're playing the news real before the feature which I guess is going to be some sort of cartoon and it shows you know everybody in America pitching in for the war effort meanwhile there's this guy in the theater is like show the cartoon already. Steve is like what you pipe down they go outside the guy absolutely beat Steve's. Ask beats the brakes off of but Steve has heart and he's okay and he's not going to just like go down he's tells the guy I could do this all day and then he picks up a garbage can lead and we get our first look at Steve Rogers yeah with the shield like with a some sort of shield and a shield post.

16:35And then a bucket barn shows up in his dress uniform and literally kicks the guy in the seat of the pants drives him away and we learn that Steve and Bucky are old friends and that Sergeant James Bucky Barnes now has his orders he is shipping out for England and the 107th infantry division he drag Steve to the modern marvels pavilion to for a double date telling him hey listen cheer up. New York City full of single women no men. And out here just like a swing and dick on the streets like you're just going to live in it and. They watch Howard Stark Tony Swav daddy demonstrate a flying car to limited success we see the first human torch is that is pretty good I mean it lifts for like 10 seconds no but on your it's a good it's a great. Showcase again of this tiny character moments like Steve lying about where he is five times even though it's a felony it's how it is like he just doesn't have the full sheen he's a little bit more play boyish he's a little bit more you know you have no who is obviously a huge influence on Stanley and also on this version of how it's dark it's a great character moment also I did start to get worried at this point I think Steve has like unhealthy fixation with being in the army.

17:56The propaganda has worked to a high level like he's got to what is best he's at the world expo there's a flying car and this man just can't stop thinking about get it just wants he wants to sacrifice for the war effort and i don't disagree at the same time like Steve really has I think part of what makes Steve such a cool character is he has an ideal about what sacrifice means true. In wartime and specifically in society and it's when those that particular ideal comes into conflict with reality that we kind of get the most interesting version of so they watch this display we do get a lingering shot of the original human torch. Jim Hammond wrote Jim Hammond a artificial man in a in like a tube is it the guy or is it just his suit it's it's a it's a vulture. You can't really tell but it looks like it's either a really good mannequin or the guy it's unclear but he's he's there and we know that that's going to play in division quest so we'll definitely have some fun in the third segment talking about what that could be yes.

19:05So Steve wanders off he looks at another yet another enlistment booth and Bucky comes over is like the girls are waiting what are you doing let's go is we're going to go. And they argue about the war with Bucky saying like why do you even fucking want to go like this is so so stupid like you're going to die Steve and Steve is like you know I don't think it's right that other guys are dying while I just sit here save at home just because I'm skinny and we love that moment honestly big Steve moment totally sums up that ideal that you're talking about he wants fairness. You know I love that doctor Abe Erskin who I love that absolutely loved it heard this entire exchange Dr Abraham Erskin is the lead scientist of the strategic science reserve like the SSR basically the allies like cutting edge of scientific research a strategic science research whatever residing it is reserved and he's been waiting for a guy just like.

20:07Steve Rogers so he goes and does the enlistment interview himself and he notes he's got the all the records he's like so you've been trying to sign up under different aliases in different cities for a while. Oh, and Steve's like how did that have to be some kind of info at the world's back expo enlistment. He's like that's Steve's like that must be some kind of a clerical clerical some other state. Yeah and Erskin is like so you want to kill Nazis and Steve's like no no I don't want to kill anybody I just don't like bullies I don't care where they're from. And then Erskin kind of like looks him over that was clearly the right answer to Erskin says so many big men fighting this one maybe we need these a little guy I can offer you a chance and he gives him a shot. I love I just was a I love this moment it's huge I also want to say aged most poorly out of most of this script one because Jack Kirby was very proud of going and killing Nazis in Germany and I think actually that the question now is is a good question and the answer should be yes but I love that we were living in a nicer time back then where like this is such a meaningful moment because him not wanting to kill is what makes him worthy of being captain America completely.

21:27But it's just really interesting to see how it feels like you know almost 20 years later. It's really really great we cut from here to the top secret Hydra mountain base. We meet Dr. Arnemsola who is fine tuning his experimental machinery Johann Schmidt comes with the cube he puts the cube in the power generator and turns cranks the dial is I did not come all just why it will be safe and clearly the power contained in the world. Clearly the power contained in the cube is just beyond off the charts it's like unreadable weird eldritch energy crackles across the room you kind of get this feeling like maybe a portal might open or something like that but then it blinks out. What was that Zola realizes that this cube could power all of his advanced weapons designs and he's super. They really establish that bright blue color that comes to be an important part of the cosmic cube and the rest of the MCU also Jason I kind of forgot how much paranormal weird occult stuff is in this movie it plays a lot into the 50s B movie while

22:36it really does it really does the rocketeer was so good at to but yeah I just I love the use of the blue in this it kind of really starts to pave away for the visual language of the rest of this phase. We go to camp Lee high new jersey which will figure an important scene in Avengers and game this is the home of the super soldier program agent Peggy Carter introduces herself to the recruits and one of the talks about shit so she knocks him in the john makes a bit the dirt and just then here comes Tommy Lee Jones Colonel Chester Phillips around the corner. One week he says listen this is the super soldier program we're going to do one week of high intensity physical training to see who's got the right stuff to be the super soldier Phillips is obviously very doubtful about Steve who looks like a wind could blow him away but Steve is showing that he's got some kind of X factor because you know when all the men are scrambling.

23:46To try and get this flag off a flag pole Steve just wades in after their they've all tired themselves out and pulls the pin on the pole drops it to the ground and picks it up and does it with his brains and then it's also clear that right from jump he and Peggy there's a vibe there's she likes him a lot she's she's also been underestimated you know she is woman in this male dominated space. They see her as weak they say Steve as weak I actually think that the their relationship is not one I've particularly ever cared about in the MCU but I have to say I think this movie actually does a way better job laying the groundwork for why it matters. Then I had previously remembered and I think that was at well as fantasy take away she's so great she's so cool and also as well this whole sequence is very Mulan coded it's so similar to the sequence where they're training in Mulan. Mulan's out. So I think everyone because she's a woman and the very down to be this to defeat.

24:54The question Tony Austin iconic so yeah they're great. So Phillips and Erskine are at odds because Phillips is like the loudmouth guy that Peggy punch that's the guy I think that's a soldier that's a real sort of ladies big strong. Erskine is like strongly disagree clearly the leader in the clubhouse is Steven Rogers the 90 pound weakling and Phillips is like listen this isn't. War is not like a place for like nice guys is not you know as smart and dedicated as he is we need like attack dogs and I don't think Steve has the juice for it and then to kind of prove his point he opens this create a fake grenades. He's a pin on one crazy. Pulse the pin on one throws it in the middle of the recruits and yells great and everybody jumps out of the way except for Steve Rogers who jumps directly on the grenade Phillips is impressed you can tell he's like fuck I guess Erskine is right he looks at her skin and says he's still skinny and it walks off and it's you you walk away understanding Steve got the nod before yeah for this we go to the night before the procedure.

26:13Steve is very nervous he's alone in the barracks because the recruits have been sent home. Erskine comes with a little bottle of shops from Osberg and he talks about his little town and the Nazis and how the Nazis were interested in his scientific work and how they sent Johann Schmidt of Hydra to investigate the super soldier serum that. That Erskine was working on that Schmidt had become obsessed with it. He then injected himself with it before it was ready and it made him immensely powerful but also there were some dark side effects and Erskine tell Steve a good man becomes great. Bad becomes worse this is why you would chosen and he makes Steve promise. One thing is that is not to become a perfect soldier but to maintain himself as a good man and then he pours two schnapps before realizing oh you what am I doing you can't drink this the night before the procedure and then he drinks both it's very funny. Honestly like crazy how much real like operation paper clip shit they built into this as well like the whole kind of like Nazi scientists here they speak around it a bit because Erskine's not a Nazi here he's a good guy.

27:25He's like a good guy and they came and they stole his technology but it's all very much heavily again historically built on real stuff which again I think is kind of different to anything else in the MCU and again makes this kind of age very differently as you can tell guys I haven't watched this rewatch this one a lot it's not necessarily a top 10 of mine but I was really pleasantly surprised by how well it held up it's pretty interesting. Yeah I think I like this one more than you but it is just the same I was like this is good this is actually good and it zips by so comes Zola comes back to the lab to find Schmidt having his portrait painted his true portrait which we don't see is actual face right now it's in shadow and he's listening to opera and Schmidt points at the desk over there is goes look at that and it's spy photos of Erskine walking around New York City clear. Like you know going from lab to lab for his super soldier project so this is like who cares about Erskine like we've got the cube he won't succeed like we're ready to go to the next level and Schmidt is very concerned he wants Erskine's work stopped and it's clear he wants the formula for himself.

28:40Steven Peggy ride to the lab and they commiserate over being outsiders with Peggy opening up to Steve about you know being a struggle with a struggle of being a woman in a man's world and how she's had to deal with all that Steve doesn't really get it but it's open to his eyes quite a bit. The lab is hidden behind an antique shop in Brooklyn there is a senator from DC there who comes like with his deputy who turns out to be a hydroguy hydrospy undercover Howard Stark is running the technical aspect of the process for Erskine Steve gets in the cradle that is going to put him in the sarcophagus he gets injected with all the super soldier serum like like a dozen needles going to him. And then he is placed in the sarcophagus and bombarded with vitarys which are an early form of gamma ray and he's like screaming as he's getting like microwave throughout this and Erskine almost turns it off but Roger's like don't don't do it hydroguy up in the in the gallery literally does the guy locking in sitting forward me like he's like holy shit.

29:49He like fucking lots and. It's like a cinema. Oh. And then there is a you know a pregnant pause and then. Erskine says okay Howard open it up and they open the sarcophagus sarcophagus and there is a gasp throughout the lab as everyone gets a look at how shredded and bling and sweaty and sexy. Oil Rogers in now is in now and it's so funny to be that he goes in there shirtless but with his chin. Why is he having she comes on Jason why does he not have is it because he is just a modern guy but you feel like he would have come out in the tight. He white is like. I want to say. I just like in that moment Peggy's like yes she's like I fucking committed to this guy because I just thought he was a nice guy even when he was skinny I didn't fucking know it could go down like this.

30:49That's right and oh baby I'm about to get paid out for this good choice I made. I'm in the nice guy. She like bought Bitcoin and it's like making it since 2008 she's a million. She's practically she's practically panting it's like she's like a protein. The ice coming out yes and the time rolls across the floor. Hydroguy immediately swings into action he triggers an explosion he fucking double taps Erskine right in the chest at Erskine dies and steves arms. And he steals a couple of aisles of the formula and he runs out Steve Chase is him through Brooklyn and Hydroguy actually makes it to his cool little. Crazy. He has a submarine. But Steve like crashes through the canopy and drags him to the surface and then the guy does the tool. Cut off one end and tomorrow would take his place and then he's the next.

31:49I know he does. The submarine brings me to one of the other things I think that really. Engaged me about this movie and indeed me to it this time which is. The Batman animated series inspired kind of like steam punk elements now there's not a lot we don't have like crazy blimps in the sky right. But the cars are really exaggerated there's this occult Nazi technology that leans a little bit more into this kind of art deco like stylized elements. And get closer to the end of the movie there are moments where they pull up in cars that look almost hand drawn. Like I love how it becomes more stylized once Steve takes the serum you're in a different world now this is a world where science and magic exists and it looks really cool and it's not as boring as I think many of us. Thought when it first came out you know especially in England it was actually quite popular this movie but yes I did feel like I wish it had been more engaging I didn't want to watch a world war to movie. But like watching it now actually it's really interesting take and I think Joe's vibes from the rocketeer of really here in full.

32:59Oh for sure we go back to the hydra base Nazi big wigs have arrived and they're here to kind of reel in. Yo on Schmidt who has been making about a bunch of big promises about advanced weaponry but also has been building his independent power base with hydra and been doing crazy shit doing his own crazy shit without the okay from Hitler and the rest of the leadership. They want to see the advanced weapons that Schmidt promise so Schmidt's all you want to see the weapons okay come come and so they go in there and Schmidt's showing them around all these like cannons and stuff and then one of the Nazis looks up and sees a map of like proposed target cities for these advanced weapons it is like believe is on this map. And Schmidt is like is will watch this and then he uses the advanced weapons to just like evaporate the guys it's turning to die feeling never ask for a test or a showcase of an advanced weapon you've seen Robo cop it's either going to go wrong and you're going to get shot out of the window by a 209 or you're literally asking for them to go aha you would like to see them would you and kill you James Bond style is exactly what happens to Jack black in the remake of the game.

34:13Black in the remake of day of the jackal killed by Bruce Willis so you know Zola is a little horrified at what he's just seen and he gives a very tentative Hail Hydra double salute we go back to Steve Steve in the wake of the successful test but the destruction of all the samples of the formula is now the one repository of working formula in the world. He's immediately given the king the rank of captain and he might be thinking oh this is it I'm going to war I'm getting a shit great. But he's too valuable for that with the serum in his in his blood and one thing he can do which is safe and which is actually very valuable is he can be a recruitment tool to get people to both a list and to buy war bonds which are vital for the war effort. So depressing when you watch it right now like I think the movie saying a lot more than we even thought I just think there's this great there's a great senior about to talk about that highlights how there is actually a little bit of commentary here about the realities of war war propaganda signing up for war the lives of soldiers that this movie deals with in a way that I think we wouldn't expect the MCU to deal with when we go further into its kind of more militarized future.

35:35Steve is not happy about becoming a pitchman but in a montage we see him kind of get better and better and better and better at it and of course the combination of this little stage play that Steve does throughout the country and into Europe is him punching an actor made up like Hitler to of course a mirror image of the famous Josimon. Captain America timely comics cover he goes finally to Italy to do this for the enlisted men five miles from the front but they are not impressed at all they've of course been doing real fighting it's just like a little bit humiliated by this. He is kind of like fuming in his tent when Peggy comes up and he learns that bucket's a hundred and seventh infantry went up against hydro the other day was decimated with many of them and thought captured. Steve goes to Phillips and is like Bucky Barnes where is he I want to know what you know what was his last location that's my boy I want to know where this hydra basis Phillips is like are you crazy we're not doing a rescue are you crazy router.

36:46We lose more men than we say but I don't think I'd have to. Yeah I don't think that a. Or five course girl would understand that said and Steve like Steve's you know face falls when phrase calls him a chorus girl but. Of course he really wants to go and he's dedicated to go and Howard and Peggy are like gonna help he doesn't realize the home of a Roy act. Chemistry between Stephen Bucky like he has to go he will in the future like decimate through a fucking UN Accords for like 300 countries because he loves this man so much Phillips he loves he's going I'm sorry he's Bucky is he's going. So they take Howard's plane and they're heading out to the last known location and Steve is kind of observing the vibe between Peggy and the very dashing Howard Stark and he kind of wonders if they're fucking. He hears them talk about eating fondue and he thinks that might be. He does no one is slang for some sort of like 69ing or sexually thing that he doesn't know about.

37:51We're just so fucking funny or something like he's just like fun dude like what do you mean like is so funny so then they get over the drop site there's flat going off it's very intense very dangerous he. Air drops in the kind of scene that we're going to see later from see you can winter soldier and other movies and he goes in just in his like early costume which is like the helmet the goggles the kind of do boys jacket and just the prop shield which is a steel shield not as protective obviously as the one he will get later. Meanwhile Zola we learn is overseeing construction of the new Valkyrie project and the Valkyrie weaponry and the press stuff the bombs needed for the Valkyrie attack and he's using POWs a slave labor and this includes Bucky's captured 107. Steve sneaks his way into the base and saves a bunch of guys basically all the one oh seventh including guys that will later become his howling command of some dumb dug in gave Jones to marita Jacques Dernier and Montgomery falls worth the POWs then fight their way out coming during hydro weapons as they go.

39:04So Schmidt sees Rogers on the security cameras like okay so he sets the base to self destruct Steve gets a look at like the hanger where all the hydro gear is and he's like kind of scared and odd. Schmidt meanwhile is grabbed the cube and he's fleeing for the exits Rogers chases Zola but before he can get to them he hears that familiar groan the groan that only he knows must belong to Bucky. He finds Bucky strapped to a table in an isolation ward reciting name ranks zero number is clear he's been tortured and very interestingly earmarked I think for some early experimentation something about Bucky we'll talk about this later in our theories portion but it's clear that what they're saying here is something about Bucky was obvious right away and then he's going to be a little bit more careful.

40:04That something probably made him perfect for some sort of super soldier serum and hydra picked up on it early yeah they have this wonderful exchange where you know Steve's like I thought you're dead and Bucky says I thought you were smaller he's kind of blown away it was Steve was like he's like okay wait maybe you can talk me now I mean the little different now. The base blows up Stephen Bucky get out but before they can get all the way out there confronted across a catwalk by Schmidt and Zola. Schmidt is a congratulations Rogers leaving you humanity behinds and then they trade punches yeah and Rogers realizes that Schmidt is a strong as him. But then the cat the catwalk separates Bucky like throws the lever before they can really get into it because there's no time. And Schmidt says you're only a sky and second best creation and then he peels off his face and we see for the first time the true visage of the red skull and it is horrified love it great practical work here Hugo being absolutely eating it up mask looks beautiful no way that I mean I'm shocked that they ever bought this look back it had to be an endgame the craziest movie.

41:14Because this is so much more traditional classic yeah superhero than we ever see again for a long time in the MCU even the Chitari and stuff they don't look like this they you know this is like a guy wearing a mask in the best possible way. Schmidt flees to his like rocket copter Zola's like what about me and Schmidt takes out his car keys like not to scratch. And they flee Steve returns with the one oh seventh on foot back to base with the sub bunch of like a common deer hydra stuff. Hydrous stuff. Peggy sees him sonter in and she's like sweating speeds of sweat rolling out like she was also she also just heard him be declared dead by the captain so she was not expecting this like and there he is and she's looking like a romance fucking the fact that she manages to drop the six Zinger to. Oh my gosh she walks up all.

42:16Walks like you know stands like an inch from him looks them up and down just like you're late. He says I couldn't he pulls out his little communicator is which was destroyed he's like couldn't call my ride. Steve then goes to Phillips is like i'm offering myself up for. Prosecution he's ready to break over over disobeying orders but Phillips is like not I don't know we're not going to do that that there's no reason for that in fact you get to hand pick your gun. Hand pick your guys to create a crack team that you will lead into the field and of course these are going to be the Helen Commanders they're all drinking at a bar one night you know talking Steve's has just pitched them the idea of becoming the Helen Commanders when Carter shows up. Cleavage full bloom in this. Red lipstick red. Red dress the road the ultimate like 50s femme fatale dress you can imagine in your mind she's wearing it and it's she's wearing it looks great. Bucky is like what up babe and she doesn't even she's like did a breeze like I don't even hear that like crazy that has to stand finest.

43:22Pays no attention to that and. Bucky is like holy shit like what the what's happening to me like I've lost my mojo but of course you know she only has eyes for Steve at this point which is a problem because other women are noticing the same thing marjorie Tyrell like in the stand open. Many game of. And she's sexy. Marjorie Tyrell looks up from her paper one day to see Steve Rogers sitting there and she's like highest done and she throws herself at Stephen yeah and Peggy happens to walk in as this is happening and really it's not gone anywhere but she's. Peggy is. She but yes there is some smooching marjorie Tyrell goes in for the kiss. Steve does not immediately pull away we have to say man he's also probably a virgin who's never kissed that before so like I think that's fine like she's fine but I will see again if this man he needs to be studying the real apparently cannon exploits to his world of Indiana Jones because this bitch is giving Nazi spy immediately like a blonde lady with red lipstick.

44:35She throwing herself at you she want to kiss you she want to get your super soldier DNA come on Stephen come on. A bit you got to tighten it up so Peggy comes in and she's like not pleased that this she thought Steve was different you know he presented himself as a different thoughtful guy now it seems like he's just like every other guy she's pissed. Howard is experimenting on hydra stuff he's very impressed with their technical prowess he makes Steve you know show Steve designs for new costumes and the new materials that they will use in the costumes and then he shows Steve a selection of shields you know there's the electric shield there's this one that one. Steve's like I like this basic one what's this basic round one is like oh that one is vibranium it's like this very very rare metal can't get it anywhere it's basically indestructible seems like why doesn't everybody have this and he's like well because. We only have literally all the vibranium we have is to is that like we can't make anymore just that so he select that just then Peggy walks in and Steve is still trying to patch it up with Peggy.

45:37This previous incident with Marjorie Tyrell and he's she's like hey Peggy check out the new shield what do you think it Peggy like pops a clip in her fucking gun and is like bang bang bang and the bullets fall right off the shield and she's like looks like it works and Howard is like holy shit from there on Steven there it's so good Steven the command is then going to rampage taken down base after base after base after base is raging he's saying he's something must be done about this because my will my plans are having to be delayed because of this so the next mission for the commandos is this top secret hydro train high in the mountains no don't do it don't do it guys. There are shipments of hydro weapons and the intel says it's all is on the train but it's a truck.

46:38There are armored hydro troopers with blasters double double armed blasters that are powered by the queue on it and this destroys part of the train. The train bucky falls out of the hole Steve tries to rescue him but of course he plunges deep into the roots of the sea to his death Steve is crushed but they do manage to get out of there with Zola as their prisoner Phillips interrogate Zola over steak dinner Zola's there's no reason why to stay so Phillips eats it he promises that he will leak to Schmidt that Zola has turned collaborator is living in Switzerland and then they'll just release him on the street so so crazy Zola can kill so Zola in return really more scared of Schmidt than the allies gives up the Valkyrie project it's an advanced bomber that's basically carrying cube powered bombs.

47:38And the target is all the major cities in the world crazy he wants to destroy the world so you can remake it in his image very do like if I don't say so myself if you do say so yourself I think you'll correct Jason and you know Phillips is like that's a crazy plan is like doesn't it doesn't matter he can do it and then he tells. Phillips about the hydra base where the bomber is parked it's in the Alps of course launches in 24 hours James Bond yes in a bombed out London. Oh he can't even get drunk Steve is in there just drinking drinking drink he can't get drunk because of the super soldiers Peggy walks in. And she's like stop blaming yourself by now it's clear that they're they haven't kissed or anything but it's clear that they're in line like it's that they know they wouldn't be flung with anyone else post modulo Tyrell I think yeah that's right and she's trying to get Steve to not blame himself for this and not be so hard on himself of course Steve can't do it.

48:39Phillips then updates the commandos Peggy Stark and the rest of the top brass on Zola's Intel the out base project Ralker all that Steve proposes a full frontal assault he will ride in on motorcycle as the tip of the spear. And which he does he takes out hydra troopers gets to the front door blows open the front door bit of then he is captured but this is exactly his plan he's taking a Schmidt and handcuffs the skull monologues. Oh arrogance captain this is our cold open yep and he beats on Steve a little bit and Steve's like I can do this all day yes of course of course but I want to thank Cedule and just as he's about to blow Steve away with his cute powered weapons the commandos strike they repel in through the windows of Schmidt's office windows in an impregnable mountain base for some reason. Schmidt has these huge picture windows crazy and this is followed immediately by the assault forces outside led by Phillips the regular on the fighting is very intense a lot of guys die including a lot of allied soldiers the skull then is like well we got that's it we're launching a rockery now.

49:55He gets in the bomber is going down the runway Phillips and Peggy drive Steve down the runway so that he can. Crazy car right like a fucking crazy star is car yeah it's amazing yeah it's unbelievable that it's like this long kind of heavily drawn out heavily stylized night in 20s cards this is such an incredible sequence very rocketeer asked yes car. And just as Steve's about to jump on he and Peggy finally share their first kiss and he leaps on the plane Steve has to hijack like a fighter jet and crash it into the Valkyrie bomber to get a board but he gets aboard being the skull fight and they're fighting breaks the housing of the cube which kills like the controls to the to the Valkyrie bomber and Schmidt is like fuck he picks up the cube bear handed power courses through him but he's just a man he can't control this power and the power seems to evaporate him although we know of course that it has zapped him transported him in a bodyless kind of form to through a portal to another world which is

51:05vormir which we'll go back to in in Avengers endgame the cube then melts through the plane and drops in the ice. Steve jumps behind the controls planes going too fast it's going to New York it's going to blow up New York there's no safe landing there's nobody left to fly it there's nothing to do he gets on the radio and telling Peggy what's going on Peggy is like we can get Howard let me get Howard on the line and he he'll know what to do he'll know what's to do he's like no there's no time for that I'm I have to put it down to save the world I've just got a 9-11 this thing into the ice and he's like I'm going to have to take a rain check on that dance and she's like okay what about next Saturday's Stork Club 8 p.m. don't be late I'm going to be really mad at you you have to be there and he's like you got it but of course like I don't know how to dance remember you're going to have to teach me we're going to have to ask the band to play something slow and then I'll be there Peggy and then just static and we know that the craft has gone down that's it Steve is dead.

52:05Howard later goes off on an icebreaker and they find the cube but can't find Steven he promises like I'll keep looking for Steve Phillips then slips Peggy Steve's classified file so she can know everything about the boyfriend she kissed once Steve wakes up. sometime later question mark in a recovery room looks like the 40 still on the radio is a Dodgers Phillies game but Steve knows something's wrong and nurse comes in he's like what's going on here she's like what do you mean he's like that game on the radio I was at that game I can't hear and she's like oh she's your eyes go wide as she realized it's fuck Steve's out smarter than he burst out of the room. He burst out of the room and he finds himself on this kind of like movie set he escapes the building they call for the nurse calls for a code 13. Steve gets out of the building is knocking over shield guys as he goes he runs the Times Square which is now totally unrecognizable to him this is this would be 2016 Nick Fury drives up and is like hey cap sorry about that we just thought it would be easier this way to kind of acclimate you to what's going on and he's like what do you mean.

53:21And Fury is like you been asleep cap from 70 years. Steve takes it all in and. Fury is like are you going to be okay and he's like yeah I just had a date cut. To the to the end credits and the end credits theme song that is the end of Captain America first of injured let's take a quick break will be back. The most simple straightforward read is this is simply to get the audiences, new audiences and returning audiences to be like, hey, this is Steve Rogers. Remember him?

57:23I think there are some interesting Easter eggs as well. What do you think? I think what are your theories about what this could mean and why it might be important for Dune's day. So I actually do agree. I do think just like when we talked about X1, X-Men. No. I think that the base level read of this is, hey, this is the main character of Dune's day. Steve Rogers. His, how he got here, his how he became Captain America. But my second layer reading is I think it's really all about reminding people how important Peggy is and how important this date that they never got to have was. That is a through line thread throughout this movie. They're always trying to go on dates. They're always trying to get the dance. They never get it. And obviously when he comes back, he realizes he's missed that chance. Right. Is the choice that leads him, I mean, it's the consequence. The consequence of that is his choice to go back in time at the end of endgame and live with Peggy, which we know is at least one of the kind of inciting reasons that Dune is mad.

58:30He says that notion of you've all lived stolen lives. So I think it's going to be the actions of what happened in endgame or what led to the incursion and one of those actions is Steve going back. So I think they want us to remember this is where it all started. It became this love story between the two of them. That's what made him want to go back. That's what he was striving for. And now let's see how it looks when someone else loses. And ironically, throughout the kind of Captain America stories, we have seen people who've lost their families because of the Avengers. And so this is not like a new thread. But I think it's going to be interesting to see how Dune connects to it because I really did feel even that last line I had a date. It's like it's so definitively about him and Peggy. And I think that is something they really want to lay down here because if we are right and him going back cause the incursion, then we're going to be in a situation where once again, but for less empathetic reasons than ever,

59:32the cap is going to be at the center of this kind of world ending crisis. And maybe is going to have to deal with that and how why so to get people on his side, they need to remind them that it's this love story. This unrequited, required but never kind of completed love story. The happy ending they never got, you know. So watching this two, three really interesting things jumped out and I and again, I think that is to be fair, kind of a stretch, but it's probably a stretch that these things mean anything, but we like to we like to have a little stretch. We like to have a stretch. And if we know anything about the way the russos work, particularly with infinity weren't in game and all the callbacks to different moments in the MCU, that really rewarded fans and were things much like in the comics that they used to kind of build moments off of here to moments that really stuck out to me. One is as mentioned in the recap, Barnes has already been separated for some sort of process. They're already doing experiments on him and they realize that

1:00:43it may be he's perfect for super soldier or something. So in a new kind of timeline, this could mean that Hydra has an even bigger head start, like a head start on shield and not only that we know that shield was Hydra almost from the start, certainly when Zola joins, it's it takes some time, but he turns it into it becomes Hydra Hydra. So could this be a thread they pull in and the second one is so at the end of the movie Phillips in kind of an out of character, not out of character, but but a showing like how invested he is in the relationship between Peggy and Steve and you know he kind of breaks protocol and he slips Peggy Steve's classified file. So this is the MCU, there's a lot of time travel there. I think that there's a world in which because shield is Hydra always they now know where Steve comes from and they don't everything about him.

1:01:44What if they go and think about what Steve looks like in the trailer long hair just like Bucky right in a in a nomad like costume, but you could also read it as kind of like a Bucky as Hydra costume. And if they in a terminator like turn figure out time travel first kidnap baby Steve brainwash him and turn him into like the first Hydra winter soldier is the idea that one coolest idea ever watch out everyone. Jason's about to Mephisto you like idea in an end of vision because that was a cool idea with the idea that one day that the Avengers or heroes might try and time travel and get and meet you and then you can like get into them undercover and pretend you're good guy Steve, but you're actually bad guy Steve. Okay, well I will say Jason I'll start with your second one because I will say lots of lots of theorizing on the internet if we are going to get some kind of secret empire take us.

1:02:48And also like a lot of people are not used to nomad cap so when they saw Steve in that vibe they were like wait does this fit wrong to me like am I picking something up and also in the comics he has tripped more near before as bad guy cat. And he has been able to still hold more near so that doesn't prove that he is you know a good person. So I do think that you are probably onto something though your version of it is the coolest version I've heard I think and I kind of love. The notion that there could be this sort of switcheroo because also one of the biggest things that fans have always wanted if we're talking about kind of fan service was Bucky as cap right he was cap in the MCU multiple time I mean in the comics multiple times he was capping a very popular Thunderbolts run he had the shield. So there's also a version where if that happens then in that universe Bucky becomes captain America because Steve was taken and becomes baby hydra Steve you know so I think that that could solve multiple different issues in a way that's both fan service e but fun so I really like that.

1:03:57And I think that the Bucky Steve relationship has to be back at the forefront for doomsday and I'm hoping that them including this puts that there because after he chose Sam which I'm a Sam Wilson Stan in the comics I always wanted him to be captain America I think it's great they made him captain America but in the movies it felt like it was odd that he didn't choose Bucky to some right. And especially because they had a relationship or he didn't even acknowledge it wasn't a conversation where Bucky and him chose together and were like Sam's the better guy which is true. So I think that maybe them including this and then your read on the potential of the Bucky Steve parallels maybe they're going to be bringing that back to the forefront in whatever way so that's like another one another thing I would love to see as this. Here's my the last thing I notice is that. You kind of forget how close Steve and Howard were stowed to go take Steve to go save the one oh seven the alongside Peggy it's a key in Peggy against the US.

1:05:01I really see his closest closest pals and so I find it very hard to believe that Steve that one Peggy would keep Steve secret like from everyone and from Howard it's interesting to me that in the main phase one phase two phase three. And the flashback and end game we never see Howard starts like Steve and Howard don't reconnect when he goes back to Camp Lehigh in the time highs and then we never get to see what Howard's thoughts about Steve were since then and I think that there is a world in which part of how the time lunch shifts is Steve reaching out to Howard and through that relationship of James. A bunch of things changing including him not being in including him not being assassinated including like a different relationship with Tony. A lot of other things could come from that is right Steve reconnects with Howard and I can't see any way that he wouldn't reconnect with I got a I love this Jason because actually something I kind of never thought about because I started to go regress back to my stucky era that we all have.

1:06:19When these movies came out but like I guess I never kind of realized how much this movie introduces that friendship between Steven Howard and how when he's fighting Tony about Bucky killing his parents he's also talking about his friend and Tony has to do that and that's actually kind of deeply emotional and exactly. Yeah, I love so I would love to see them maybe play into that and obviously don't want to give them credit for this but there is going to be a reason to bring up Tony because this motherfucker looks identical so they take the mask off this all becoming into play Jason oh my god phase one is coming back baby and so what if like what if that is part of what sets this in motion and I just think it's like such a strong emotional thread which is kind of the best type of thread if they wanted to. On it because again they were you know howard is crushed when they can't find Steven he's like I'm going to keep looking I don't give a shit we're going to keep looking never finds him and so we never find out about that we get that great moment at Lehigh where Tony.

1:07:27Unbeknownst to Howard you know gets to talk to his dad but what if I mean first of all Howard would have instantly recognized it would have a no question they would have blown up the mission but how cool. Would that have been and you're so right like that is like and they bring up and we go to camp Lehigh here too yeah again thinking of things that could come back. The unspoken like emotional complexity of that argument with Tony where Tony is like your friend killed my dad how dear you killed my parents and Steve doesn't say doesn't have the chance to say and it's not really in his character to say you know that was like one of my really good friends. Basically his best like I'm sorry from my one is best friend can inically this man saved the man who would go on to kill him because he goes on the mission to save Bucky and it is Bucky getting saved here that allows him to be you know thought to be dead and then later we find out the winter soldier there is actually so much going on.

1:08:33There's a lot there that I'm now like wait a minute Joe Johnston come back actually guys incredible Joe Johnston update he recently sent a message for Jurassic Park 3 a movie he also directed when we showed it a god in a cinema and guess what guys Joe Johnston couldn't come because he is now an actual paleontologist digging up dinosaurs driving around in a big Rick truck and he said. And he said a message from his big Rick truck where he was going to do dinosaur digs so good for him cool I know he probably want to come back but I wish he would because yeah the way these layers connect Jason I'm feeling like we could have some pretty meaty stuff going on here that hadn't necessarily considered before yeah if they go that way now we got a. I guess we should talk about old cap. There's been so Joe Biden famously there's there's like two competing theories Mark is a McPhilly who wrote. Infinity War and game said that old cap because of the ancient ones you know rule that going back creates a branch dimension it doesn't alter the demand the timeline from which the original person came yeah that.

1:09:51There would now be two Steve Rogers and and so that Steve Rogers was the original see the old Steve Rogers original the Rousseau's then said in 2021 that Steve would have been in a branch reality and would have had to travel back to the main timeline to hand to hand Sam the shield so would have to it would have to be like a variant cap. No original cap coming from a variant timeline to the original timeline gives Sam the shield okay since they are directing the create I would imagine that their philosophy wins and it's very interesting to kind of try and figure out what this means for old Steve and. Here's my create this is again I tell me crazy is there I just want to reiterate that I think the most likely thing is that this is just a refresher on who Steve Rogers is as a. Yeah that said I think there's a world like in the comics actually where young Steve Nomad is bad old Steve is original Stephen good good Steve is perhaps like the primary Steve in this movie old Steve did a lot of stuff old Steve was old in the comics for like a couple of years yeah and he did a lot of stuff in the comics is an old man he needs to come.

1:11:14He needs to make it come back and prove to us that he wasn't just sitting around like when slavery happened all this shit that was going down. What are you doing civil rights movement. I'm back and he go like any time travel my guy so like I think that I love that theory Jason and yeah it is so funny back when journalism was still a paid job guys that you could live off I actually got paid by Esquire magazine to write in 2016 2019. To write how I thought the time travel worked before they'd made any official statements on it and yeah it is honestly some of the most confusing stuff ever but I do think that both of those quotes that you have pulled are proof that I think that introducing the notion that we could see very caps basically I do think that is what kind of trying to add now is like look you might see multiple different versions throughout the world. This is the MCU this is the fan service stuff this is the cameo shit I wouldn't be surprised if they fucking find a way to put him as Johnny storm or whatever weird shit they want to do right like they're going to find ways to use the variance.

1:12:28Unfortunately that is who they are right and we've heard they're finding trouble in the edit I hope that's not the case but I do think that the biggest takeaway is the rousseau is kind of get to set the rules and what they have been setting for the last couple of years is there's probably a couple of caps. Now you're feeling on whether they're good or bad that's that's going to be your choice I do have a feeling now that young nomad is got a nefarious mindset or something a little because he you know thorgias accepts him so easily when he likes the hammer it just feels too good to be true and we all know that if they really need an miracle they need fucking scarlet which or some shit they don't need a guy who can punch hard like well here's the thing I'm very just need to be. He could could he theoretically be. Honorable enough worthy to lift the hammer if the evil part of him is locked behind like the word lock like in winter soldier where he's activated so he doesn't he's not conscious that he's a bad guy until somebody says the words or whatever however they unlock it so could that work maybe I don't know me again we're we're just theorizing but it could be fun.

1:13:45Remember the movie. And you got to watch you got to rewatch this one guys it's it's fun. The Chris Evans thing maybe wonder if they won't do this but imagine if they were like. Peter Dinklage is itry and ball of our trash. Like the same after just multiple characters in the year saying if they if they could find a way to do it that is not like Deadpool. Right. Quippy and actually adds like a gravitas and kind of play on the end of the multiverse saga because which they flopped massively like and just kind of end it but in a way that does reference and acknowledge it and then you can do that because you're at the end of the movie as we are all assuming at this point is going to be this kind of collect collision of worlds into one and then you just select what you want to keep right so there is space for them to play with that and I do think. The argument you're making for two caps is a good one and also if they have an old cap I don't think we're going to get like crazy old man like insane CG cap the whole time I think it will be like an older cool Logan version of Chris Evans and then you have you know no mad.

1:15:05But yeah I'm interested to see where it goes because it's so funny I was I was pulling up the square article to like and I was like wow I was talking about Kanga Conqueror I was talking about all this stuff that you know would come to pass but in ways we could have never imagined and then I'm kind of pulling it up as a reference to look at how they fix that because they fucked it up so much so so much has happened since 2019 we could never have seen it all coming. But I think the thing I couldn't see coming the least on this watch was just like how at how much emotional shit there was the poor for me which I have to say kind of like the 2 the first X-Men movie being included right there is like so much good character work in the first two acts and I feel like this movie is a similar structure where there's a lot of character work a lot of well building before you get to that big final fight I don't think you know doomsday is not going to probably have the space for that but I think that these are the things that I'm going to do. These are characters we're supposed to know about care about and be invested in before we get to this big kind of boom of a movie and everything else is just you know as Mike Flanagan says all confetti but the rest of it's just theories it's just stuff we dream and hope for but I'm interested if you guys are watching it like what you think is going to stick as well.
