Camden Councillors Approve 3.4% Pay Rise

That's higher than the UK's current 3% inflation rate, boosting their basic pay to 16,551 pounds and 27 pence each year. The increase passed through the Cross Party Audit Committee last month and got final approval at Monday's full council meeting. Unlike before, it sailed through with almost no pushback or discussion. In earlier years, conservatives and liberal Democrats often objected, pointing to service cuts and squeeze household budgets amidst stagnant wages. This time around, those concerns stay quiet, even as the total extra cost hits 49,000 pounds annually. About 30 counselors receive add-ons for roles like group whips or committee chairs, while the council leader pockets an additional 45,000 pounds on top of the basic amount. Most members balance this with private sector jobs. Camden officials argue their rates remain low compared to other similar burrows, ensuring a wide pool of people can afford to run for office and serve the community.
