California lawmakers are moving fast to rename Caesar Chavez Day as Farm Workers Day ahead of the March 31st holiday. This comes after new allegations of sexual assaults by Chavez against women and girls surfaced. The state was the first to create the holiday back in 2000. Chavez became famous in the 1960s for leading fights for better pay and conditions for farm workers in Central and Southern California. He died in 1993 at 866. March 31st is now a federal observance and a state holiday in several places. The Loris Huerta, who started the United Farm Workers Union with him, recently said he assaulted her during that era. She had kept it quiet to protect the movement and even had two children with him. A New York Times investigation uncovered a pattern of similar claims from other women, including some who were minors at the time. The union has now canceled all planned events for the day.
