Cairngorms National Park Bans Campfires, Barbecues

0:00On March 31st, Scotland's Cairngorms National Park, the biggest in the UK at 1,748 square miles, just rolled out a strict ban on campfires and barbecues. It kicks in every year from April 1st through September 30th, with fines up to 500 pounds for anyone caught breaking in. Officials approved this last fall to cut down on wildfire risks after some brutal blazes hit hard. Last summer, brought with folks called, Scotland's largest wildfire ever, scorching nearly 30,000 acres across spots like Dava and Carbridge. Smoke drifted 40 miles, forcing road closures and folks to seal up their homes against the haze. Land owners and rangers say, human sparks from these fires wrecked huge chunks of the park. Part visitors have mostly been cool, but rangers dealt with headaches like wild parties leaving trash and waste, or up to 30 campfires in one. Night near Avamore, back in 2020. These anti-social bives fueled years of damage, pushing the authority to act after why public input.
