1996 áprilisének egyik délutánjá n egy férfi sétált be az angliai Manchester redőkapitányságára, ahol bejelentett hogy barátnője véletlen baleset következtében belefulladt kádjukba. A férfi az akkor 48 éves James Patterson Smith volt. A barátnője pedig egy 17 éves tinédzser.
A rendőrség később rájött, hogy Smith egy szadista, kontrolmániás pszichopata. Nemcsak hogy vízbe fojtotta a lányt, előtte még három héten keresztül a lehető legkegyetlenebb módokon meg is kínozta.
