Stay informed in two minutes or less with Durham News today from the Daily News Now. Hulu has scrapped plans for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot titled, New Sunnydale. Sarah Michelle Geller was lined up to return as Buffy Summers, with Chloe Zhao set to direct and executive produce after shooting the pilot. Geller broke the news herself in an Instagram video on March 14, 2026. She sounded sad about the decision, but thanked Zhao for bringing her back into the role and praised the fans for their support over recent months. The next day at the Oscars on March 15, the 43-year-old Zhao opened up during a red carpet chat. She called the experience amazing with Geller and the team, stressing their role as protectors of the original series from 1997 to 2003. Zhao stayed positive, noting that things happen for a reason, and they are open to whatever comes next. When asked about pitching the project to other networks, she hinted at embracing the unknown without committing.

Fans jumped in right away, flooding comments with encouragement for Zhao to keep shopping the idea around. Many vowed full support, while earlier reports confirmed, a new slayer character played by Ryan Kira Armstrong was part of the plan. Quick things to today's sponsor, see the description for more.
