佛祖在舍卫城给孤独园时，一天斋后，佛祖为天人、国王、大臣、民众及四辈弟子演说如同甘露一样的佛法。当时有七位远道而来的婆罗门长老，来到精舍，问讯佛陀，顶礼佛足，合掌禀告：“世尊，我们住在边远地区，听说有大圣人在此教化，本来早就想要过来归依，但因诸多阻碍而未能如愿，至今才得以睹见圣容。我们愿意出家做佛弟子，恳请世尊教导我们了生脱死，灭除苦痛。”
