Brothers' Airport Brawl: Police Assault Trial

0:00On April 16, two brothers from Rochdale, a 21-year-old and a 26-year-old, are on trial at Liverpool Crown Court for allegedly, assaulting an armed police officer at Manchester Airport. The incident went down on July 23, 2024, in Terminal 2's Pay Station area. Officers responded to a fight that started when the younger brother punched a man in Starbucks after a family dispute on a flight from Pakistan. Earlier that evening, the brothers had shown up to pick up their mother. Things escalated fast when police tried to arrest the younger one. PC Ellie Cook, who was there with PC Zachary Marsden and another officer, testified she grabbed his arm but felt him tense up and resist. Then the older brother jumped in, leading to punches, kicks, and a chaotic brawl. Cook told the jury she felt quite scared in that hostile situation, unsure if bystanders would help or hurt. Officers ended up with injuries. Marsden got post-concussion symptoms, like headaches, dizziness, and bruising. Another female officer had a broken.

In her testimony on the trial's fourth day, Cook described striking the older brother to create space, getting kicked and punched herself, then, deploying her taser on the younger one. She saw Marsden kick him in the head and called it necessary and proportionate given the high-violence level. She hid her emergency button for backup, the only time in her career. Both brothers denied the charge of assaulting Marsden, causing actual bodily harm. The trial rolls on as jurors weigh the officer's accounts against the defense.
