Brittany Kaiser & Vesa | Cambridge Analytica, art and data ownership #227
About this episode
We rarely do episodes in English, but we wouldn’t miss conversations like this for the world. Brittany Kaiser, most well known for her role as whistleblower in the case of Cambridge Analytica’s pernicious and decisive use of data and manipulative communications tactics during the Brexit and Trump 2016 campaigns, joins Futucast for a discussion about data and the internet. Alongside her is Finnish digital artist Vesa, whom she is collaborating with on an art project in Helsinki, which intends to tell her story of her journey from Cambridge Analytica to today, and the global fight for data rights and ownership.
We are not the customer, we are the product. If you aren’t paying for a service, someone else is. Data is the new oil. Facebook knows you better than your partner.
Soundbites like this have seeped into the fabric of our modern digital lives to such an extent that they have partly lost their gravity and shock value. More or less anyone with a smartphone is having data silently extracted from them as we speak. Information about them, their personality, their behavior, their traits, their preferences, desires, fears etc. This data can be and often is used for genuine improvements and progress, but it takes a Cambridge Analytica to remind us of how powerful and destructive data usage can be.
In this episode, we discuss the case of Cambridge Analytica, and how it made Brittany understand the ways in which our modern internet economy has been built around the extraction and appropriation of data. We also discuss Brittany’s battle for data ownership, her interest in blockchain technology, the metaverse, NFTs and cryptocurrencies, as well as her collaboration with Vesa.
This conversation is a snapshot of our current digital evolution, and about what forces and incentives are seeking to define its course. The more our lives exist in this strange, networked parallel reality called the internet, the more we should all seek to understand it.
