1:01Another projected starter for Gonzaga is suddenly out of eligibility as this insanely frustrating offseason for Mark Fu and the Zags continues. Well, more news for Mark Fu and the Gonzaga Bulldogs. It has been an offseason of news and offseason that has been a roller coaster to say the very least in folks it is not over. It is not particularly close to being over, unfortunately, the latest turn for the Zags. Chancey Wiggins, the latest player to lose his eligibility. We're going to discuss what happened, why he is no longer eligible to play for Gonzaga.

2:05What it means for him, what it means for the Zags, what it means for the college athletics, college basketball in particular. We're going to close the show with some optimism. We're going to try to find a few things that maybe are signs of positivity regarding the Zags and maybe a little bit regarding Wiggins. We'll get to that to close out the show to make it so that it's not quite such a downer here on a Thursday morning. Thanks to those of you who have joined live here on YouTube. Appreciate that. And of course, those of you who are listening later on audio or video. The big headline today on September 10th, Chancey Wiggins, no longer eligible. The same thing that happened to Javan Bennett. He transferred point guard from Dayton. Has now happened to the former Florida State, small, forward at Chancey Wiggins. The lawsuit that got him eligible in the first place was in the state of Georgia. Wiggins was eligible through that lawsuit. He was also eligible through the federal Colorado lawsuit, which at that time ruled that all players in the class of 2022 were eligible, but that they could not transfer unless they'd already entered the transfer portal and a couple of other rules around it.

3:08But both Bennett and Wiggins had entered the transfer portal back in April. So both of them were eligible through the Colorado lawsuit and Bennett was eligible in the Ohio lawsuit and Wiggins was eligible in the Georgia lawsuit. So it felt like both of them had two layers of protection to keep them eligible to play for Mark Fue and the Zags this upcoming season. And now neither of them are currently eligible. It is obviously a distressing situation for the coaching staff for the two players, Wiggins and Bennett, for the fans, for everybody really. I mean, nobody's winning out of this. I mean, the NCAA may feel like they're winning. The lawyers are winning the joke that keeps rolling around. The global hours never lose and that is true. Like the lawyers are caching in. They're making all sorts of money. But this has not been a fun off season for anybody. I think Gonzaga is in a uniquely frustrating situation with obviously the previous stressors of this off season with Jack K. Hill staying in the NBA draft with Mario St. Superior departing like a thief in the night in mid July.

4:09And then of course with the two international players still awaiting eligibility in Nathan D'Souza and Isan Almanso. I will have a little bit of an update on Almanso later. But it's just the combination of all of that has made this such a difficult off season for fans for everybody. You know, I mean, I don't think it's been particularly fun. I like to say on the show like I will never complain about my job in getting to do this professionally. It's fantastic. I truly love it. But I also don't have a lot of grief. I didn't plan to have to be reading legal documents quite this much last year with with TimeGraph Foster felt like oh plenty and were like 10 times that amount this year. It's just been one of those one of those things. So to give a little bit of context of what this the specific ruling was for those who maybe don't remember, it's a the NCAA put in a went to the Georgia court of appeals. So there was a the TRO was granted in Georgia, which gave Chauncey Wiggins and RJ Godfrey and like 10 15 other players immediate eligibility to play this upcoming season.

5:12They could transfer where they wanted like that was the ruling and it was saying you are all free to play this upcoming season. We have determined that you are correct in your assessment that we should give you this eligibility right away because it would do damage to not give you that while the process continues because you wouldn't get a chance to play. So that was what was ruled in Georgia and Ohio and California, which is how Xavier on Lee is eligible. And then in Ohio and now in Georgia, the NCAA went to the state court of appeals. So the Ohio court of appeals and then the Georgia court of appeals and said, Hey, we're appealing this decision. But while we're waiting for the appeal process to complete and to actually have our hearing and and make our case for the appeal, we're going to you to have you look at whether this should be reversed basically right now. And I say reversed state is the term, which basically means we're not going to put this ruling the TRO into effect while until the appeal is heard. So it is not a full reversal.

6:13It is not the NCAA did not win the appeal. The appeal has not happened yet. All that has happened is the NCAA has gotten the court to determine that the ruling should not go into effect until they have a chance to appeal. So it's not as dire as it may seem in the sense that it's not a full on reversal. However, the court of appeals now in both Ohio and Georgia and Tennessee, another case similar that just didn't have any consaga players in it. But in those cases, the only reason the court of appeals would grant a stay is if they feel there is a strong compelling reason that the NCAA may win the appeal. If they thought, well, this this ruling makes sense to me, the TRO should be granted. The appeal doesn't seem like it's going to work. They would not grant a stay request. Now this is to conjecture, I guess, like I'm, I'm, again, not a legal scholar. I'm just telling you the general kind of assessment of the situation. Does that mean that the NCAA is guaranteed to win the appeals? Of course not. But it's not a great sign for that future.

7:15Now, of course, these players can go jump into other lawsuits if they want to. Like there's so many different avenues that make it anybody who feels confident more than like 45 to 55% one way or the other is kind of just talking out their butt. Like there's just no way. Like you listen to like the field of 68, they have a legal person who comes onto their show whenever some of this stuff breaks. And he's a lawyer. He's a legal scholar. He studies this stuff. And he's rarely more than like, I think there's 40% chance they'll play or like a 45% like nobody really knows like his assessment, which is good. I'm not criticizing at all, but it's just a more advanced shrug emoji. Like I'm really that's all that it is at this point. Nobody knows for sure what's going to go down. It's continuing to change left and right. It's, I mean, again, frustrating feels like not even enough of a word to describe what this has been like. I feel for, I mean, Chanty Wiggins is likely enrolled in classes getting ready to start

8:16grad school and start practicing with the team. Now he's on hold for that. Meanwhile, Javon Bennett's on hold. Nathan DeSuzes in classes waiting to figure out what the heck's going to happen with him. Like it's just unbelievable. And then meanwhile, Traykovman Ren, who was in the class of 2021, he read Shirted for a year and then played four years. Right? So even with the new five and five rules, which are the reason that Wiggins and Bennett and Lee are advocating for next few years, they're saying we should have gotten a fifth year like everybody else did. Traykovman Ren already had a fifth year. And yet he got a lawyer to grant him eligibility for no other reason other than I think I can make more money playing college basketball than I can playing professionally, even though he was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves. And look, the NCAA is probably going to get that one reversed too because they have had a lot of success doing that. But right now at this current moment, Javon Bennett and Chanty Wiggins who played four years of college basketball, who are not drafted by an NBA team who did not sign a professional contract are ineligible to play.

9:17Whereas Traykovman Ren, who spent five years in college basketball, who was drafted, is eligible. It doesn't make sense. The same is true for RJ Lewis at LSU who is eligible right now after he intentionally left the college basketball, you know, to forego his college basketball eligibility was signed to a two way contract in the NBA and is now returning after a full year professional. He is eligible. Traykovman Ren is eligible. Javon Bennett and Chanty Wiggins are not. It does not make any sense and it is, again, frustrating does not fully encapsulate how we're feeling right now about what this situation is for Gonzaga. So what does it mean for them specifically? Again, we may not know whether Chanty Wiggins is going to play, but we can talk about what the roster looks like with him and without him, we're going to get into that coming up here in just a second. All right, folks, segment two, still any patents still locked on Zack's podcast. And we're still talking about the stay decision made by the Georgia court of appeals on Wednesday evening that has now rendered Chancé Wiggins, say Florida state transfer forward, ineligible this upcoming season.

12:21We talked about the case specifically, the similarities to the Ohio case, what it means for Wiggins and kind of what steps might be coming next. So frustration around the whole situation. Now let's talk about what this means for Gonzaga. Obviously, with the caveat being, we do not know if Chancé Wiggins is going to be eligible or not. What we know is that right now he's not the same with Javon Bennett. Those two guys are not eligible. Nathan DeSouza is not eligible. He's on Almanza. He's not eligible of the five players in what I've been calling, quote, eligibility limbo. The only one who is currently eligible is Xavier on Lee. That is the status for Gonzaga right now. Obviously the rest of the roster, Braden Haath and some of the out Davis, Fogo, Isaiah, Harwell, etc, etc. All those players are eligible. So we know that we got a full team, barely with everybody eligible or with everybody, even if everybody's ineligible, we got a full team. It's just not a ton of depth there outside of that. So with the caveat being that we don't know if this is going to render Wiggins ineligible all season long, if he's going to keep fighting, if he's going to get eligible and then lose

13:23it and then get it and then lose it. Again, all of this is possible. And I continue to reiterate this. I even saw in the comments here before hitting the record button, people saying, the season just needs to get here. And I want to be clear about something. This is going to bleed into the season. Like it obviously would be nice to have a distraction of actual basketball games to watch. And watching Braden Haath feast on everybody for the first two months of the season is going to be great. And watching Davis Fogo and seeing that breakout actually happen that we've been talking about for seven months, all of that's going to be great. But this eligibility stuff is not going anywhere. Like I would be pretty surprised if the eligibility status for at least the five and five guys doesn't change at least once during the regular season. Like this is not just going to end when the season begins. There was hope like, oh, it'll end when classes start. Like it'll end when the actual academic year begins. That hasn't happened. So now people who are pushing the kick and down the line and saying, well, it'll end when

14:23the season starts. Why? There's no neither side is going to back down at that point. Like the players aren't going to back down. Eventually, the players will have to back down because the season will be coming to an end. But like Gonzaga's roster, they're not adding anybody to this roster. I think that's an important point here of like, if Chancy Wiggins, like, there's no reason for him to not keep fighting because again, ostensibly, he's enrolled in classes. And Gonzaga has a roster spot for him. And they're not going to replace him on the roster because you can't go get somebody when classes have already started. Like it's too late. This is the roster that Gonzaga has. Maybe they can make like a very late last minute edition like internationally and try to get somebody enrolled in classes quickly. But it's pretty unlikely. I think ultimately Gonzaga's just going to keep fighting for these guys as much as possible. And they're going to keep fighting because the opportunity to sign internationally has sort of dried up. There's a few players who have kind of given up and started signing internationally. But that window is closing very fast. So ultimately, I don't, and the incident of lay certainly not just going to eventually give up. We've been waiting and hoping they were going to do that.

15:25It doesn't look like that's going to happen. Like this is going to keep being a fight. So prepare yourselves for Gonzaga to have players one game and not have them the next game. And I, I mean, it's infuriating that that is the reality that Gonzaga's season is going to be determined by lawyers, not by the play on the court. You know, it's going to be determined by how many games they've done. Lee is eligible and not necessarily how he fits how he acclimates. Like it's just, it's, it's a huge bummer that this is going to extend into the season. Hopefully it doesn't extend past like December and into the second half of the season. But I really don't know. I, again, I wish I knew more. I wish I could tell you more. I wish anybody knew more, but we don't. That's kind of the problem with the situation. Well, we're 15 minutes into the show. And I guess I should, for those who maybe have been struggling to keep up with everything. I guess I should tell you a little bit about Chancy Wiggins, Chancy Wiggins, a six foot 10 forward. He played three years at Clemson. He played last year at Florida State. He's big, he's big. He's six foot 10, but he is not a big man.

16:26He is a small forward. He does not play. He could, you know, obviously roll up to play the four in certain lineups. But he's not really a post player. He's rebounding numbers. Last year was a career high for him. It's less than four as a six foot 10 player. That's not what he does. What he does is shoot the absolute lights out of the basketball. 39% from three last year on six attempts per game. He's one of the best three point shooters in the entire country. And certainly, like arguably the best or a top five three point shooter at his height in the entire country. He is a phenomenal flame thrower from beyond the arc. And that is desperately what Gonzaga needs. The projected starting lineup with Chancy Wiggins included him starting at the three. Davis Vogel starting at the two. Xavier on Lee at the one. And of course, Huff and Jop in the front court. That would that pushed Isaiah Harwell into a sixth man role. Now with Wiggins not eligible and with Bennett not eligible. Xavier on Lee is still eligible. So he is the projected starting point guard. And then from there, you have Isaiah Harwell stepping back into a starting role.

17:26Harwell initially transferred to Gonzaga. And I don't think was planning to start. Certainly he was going to compete to start. But I don't think the plan was for him to start because his ex had Mario St. Superior Jack K. Hill. Now they don't have either of those players. But if they have Xavier on Lee Davis, Vogel and Chancy Wiggins, I think Harwell still comes off the bench without Wiggins. Vogel plays the three, which is where he played most of last season. Harwell starts at the two. Lee starts at the one. Of course, Huff and Jop start in the front court. That is my projection projection for the Zags right now. Obviously in a worst case scenario where Xavier on Lee is not eligible. Hopefully Nathan DeSueza is eligible and you have DeSueza at the one. And then of course Harwell, Vogel, Jop Huff. The I guess absolute true worst case scenario, which is that DeSueza Lee and Bennett are in eligible. I think this is unlikely, but it is possible. At this point, heck two of those three guys are not eligible right now. If that were to happen, Davis Vogel becomes your one. There's really just not an option. He becomes your point guard. Harwell starts at the two. And I think welcome to the starting lineup, true freshman Luke Foster.

18:29He's been impressive this summer. I don't want to say it's like a disaster if Foster starts. I don't want to say that as if that's a negative thing about Foster. But it is, it's a pretty bad scenario for Gonzaga because he was not expected to be a starter. And in a reality where he is starting, it is because they don't have four or five of the players that they're hoping to have. That is a disaster. And again, it's less about Foster starting and more about there's no depth. You know, and I think there was this sort of. Surprisingly negative reaction around Skylar Wix. A lot of it directed at me and like whatever I can handle that. I was just surprising of like people like, oh, he was never going to come here. Like you like kind of like criticizing my reporting on it. I was just reporting what I was told, which is Skylar Wix committed the program in June. He then got eligible on August 4th. It was announced on August 10th. And then after saving on Lee committed, he decommitted. And people like he never wanted to cut or Gonzaga never wanted him. That's not true. Gonzaga did want him. They did want him on this roster.

19:29They just weren't promising him a ton of playing time. And he saw the opportunity wasn't really there and decided to go explore other options. I think Gonzaga take him now like I mean, honestly, like even if Luke of Foster beat him out for the starting role, Skylar Wix would be incredible depth for this team to have. If they don't have Wiggins, if they don't have Bennett, if they don't have Lee. And now he's out there. I mean, again, they could go get him again. They could try to bring him back. That's a possible scenario that happens here. They do have an open roster spot, even if they want to keep spots open for Wiggins and Lee and Bennett. They can still go get Skylar Wix and bring him back. I don't know that that's true. I'm not reporting anything here. I'm just saying it is an option that Gonzaga could pursue. And the idea that they never wanted him was always false. And I'm curious to see what they may do with that right now. Again, adding players outside of that is going to be difficult. It's just not something they can really realistically do. Right now Lee is eligible, but we don't know if that's going to last. President seems to indicate that the case in California could get stayed by the NCAA.

20:34It would not be a shock if the California Court of Appeals, after seeing what happened in Ohio, in Tennessee, in Georgia, if they also decided to put a stay on this case, and then render Lee in eligible until a hearing is able to happen. No word on that as of right now, but don't be shocked if that news happens in the next week or two, which would be again. I mean, we all know how we feel about that. We don't need to keep litigating that, but it's possible. Dare I say likely that that happens at some point with just how this has gone up to this point? Doesn't mean he won't play, but it's not a great sign at this point for Gonzaga. It's hard to feel super optimistic with how all of this has gone right now for Mark Fuse program and what has been, again, just one of the most insanely challenging, unique, frustrating off seasons in the history of college basketball. Well, we're going to try to be positive. We said we're struggling to find a way to be positive. We're going to try. We're going to try to find a way to be positive here to close out the show, talking about some players taking steps toward eligibility, also talking about Dune Johnson and his rise in the rankings over at rivals

All right folks, segment three, still any patent still locked on Zag still talking about the Georgia lawsuit, the stay request granted to the NCAA, which has rendered chancey Wiggins in eligible to compete for Markfew's team this upcoming season, the six foot 10 flame thrower from Florida state, the best three point shooter on this roster and a player who's

23:41very likely going to start for Gonzaga. You know, it's said we're going to close out the show us some good news. We're going to attempt to do that here. Peace number one, there was a recent ruling in Arizona. I think this was ruled on Wednesday, Tuesday or Wednesday in Pima County that rendered a handful of Arizona football players eligible for this upcoming season. And again, not a legal scholar. So not going to just give you the very bare bones here. There is reason for optimism that the way that that lawsuit was or the way that that filing was written and the way that they the plaintiffs argued for their eligibility and the fact that it was granted could be a different avenue that these that these places could take. If you know what I mean, like there was there was different language in that and part of it stems from effectively the NCAA's rules regarding the five and five. They, you know, they have a whole handbook with all the rules and everything. And there's no mention of the class of 2022. Now the NCAA is effectively arguing that yeah, they were out of eligibility.

24:44They were no longer student athletes. All the language says student athletes, but we were not counting them as student athletes because we released this in June after they had graduated. Again, that may be a fair legal point, but it worked that the plaintiffs essentially argued you didn't put any rules around this class in there. So you can't say that you have rules barring them from competing. Again, it's messy, it's confusing, it's frustrating, but that could work. And again, there's more to it. That is as bare bones as you can possibly get about this situation. But the thing I want you to take away from this is there is at least some optimism that folks are having that this could work. And in fact, in Ohio, the same plaintiffs in the case that Javan Bennett is a part of that has been given TRO, but that TRO has been stayed and now they're still working through the appeal process. Those plaintiffs have gone to the Ohio court of appeals who initially granted the stay request to the NCAA and they have said, hey, we want you to reverse this. And here is why and what they are explaining and what their reasoning is to try to get

25:46the Ohio court of appeals to reverse this is part of that same argument of like, hey, there's no rules in place against this particular class. If this works, if the Ohio court of appeals determines that the stay request should be reversed and not given to the NCAA based on the new findings, essentially, that the Ohio court, the Ohio plaintiffs brought to that court, if that happens, that swings the momentum way back in a positive direction for the players. Because judges and courts and lawyers, they tend to go for precedent. If the precedent with the precedent was set in Ohio, initially when the TRO was first granted, that was the first one. The precedent was then set in Ohio when the stay request was granted. Tennessee and Georgia followed suit after that. If the Ohio court of appeals then reverses the stay, it would not be surprising if in Tennessee and more notably for Gonzaga Georgia, if in those cases, the stay request was also reversed.

26:50Again, I've used this quote before for those of you who watched the office, snip snap, snip snap, snip snap. That's how it feels right now. It's constantly going back and forth, but there is, seems to have been an avenue that some lawyers have uncovered that may help convince some of these judges and lawyers to potentially reverse these stays, which would again be the appeal process would still happen, but it could be encouraging that those appeals would be less likely to be successfully won by the NCAA, which in turn would keep these players eligible for the upcoming season. That's good news. This ruling in Arizona and the way the Ohio plaintiffs have responded in the court of appeals, both positive signs for Javon Bennett specifically, but likely again, if Bennett gets eligible, it's a good chance that Lee, or excuse me, that Wiggins would get eligible. Again, Lee may go through the same rigmarole of having a stay put on the case and then having the stay reversed. Now granted, if the Ohio court of appeals reverses the stay, it's possible that the California

27:52court of appeals will not even grant a stay in the first place. Again, just kind of guessing on that regard, but it would make sense that if they're seeing these stays getting reversed, they're not going to grant a stay in the first place, something to keep an eye on in that situation as well. Another piece of good news, Bobbacar Senet was granted eligibility to play at St. John's upcoming season, and you might be thinking who on earth is Bobbacar Senet? Why do I care about St. John's getting a big man? We already stole one from them in Miss Amadea. Well, the reason you should care is that Bobbacar Senet is played with Isana Amanza for the G League of Night in the 2324 season. He's also played professionally elsewhere outside of that and a couple of things have happened. It appears that Bobbacar Senet was denied eligibility by the NCAA. That, of course, is not great news for Gonzaga because if they denied Senet, they probably will. Again, may have already denied Isana Amanza, but Senet went to the courts and was granted a TRO to play this season for St. John's, basically based on the argument of the NCAA

28:52has allowed hundreds of players in similar situations to me to be eligible. Why would they deny me? It is an arbitrary distinction. They allowed, you know, even Ivanka Chankov and Luca Bogovats and Tess DeRater and all these other players, Mario St. Superior, as an example, he's a little younger, but these players who played professionally who made huge amounts of money playing pro and then came to college basketball. They were all given eligibility and you denied me that's unfair. I want my cut. I want my money. I want my chance to compete and it worked. If El Monsa has been denied eligibility or is going to be denied eligibility, there seems to be a path to a lawsuit that would then get him eligible. I'm not going to pretend this is the best news. More lawsuits is not good and the idea that he might get denied eligibility is obviously not good either. Maybe the NCAA will see how this case went and if they haven't ruled on El Monsa, we'll ultimately decide to just make him eligible and save the hassle. They sure have not seemed like an organization up to this point that has been willing to do something that would ease the burden.

29:54They are actively intentionally making everything more difficult. So I'm not optimistic that that's the route that they would go. But it's at least a slim sliver of hope and optimism around the situation. Freeze on El Monsa as we get into mid September here. During the last thing, the only thing I'm going to talk about on the show that's not lawsuit related, Dune Johnson, shout out Dune Johnson, the loan commit for Gonzaga with 2027 class at this point. When Gonzaga first secured a commitment from the last October, he was like 30th or 40th even in the 2027 recruiting class. As of yesterday at rivals, he is 11th. He has continued to rocket up the class rankings. He was outstanding this summer at Peach Jam for Team Hero, playing all year at the Nike EYBL circuit. He played at the NBA top 100 camp, Pango Salamarican camp, again, Peach Jam, really, really fantastic player. Now a borderline top 10 recruit in this class, five star, borderline five star player has

30:55been rock solid committed to Gonzaga this entire time. Shout out to Dune Johnson, man. It's been fun to see him prove the doubters wrong and develop into a really, I mean, six seven. I'm a big guard who can play both sides of the ball. You can play off the ball, still developing the outside shop. But that's about the only weakness in his game right now. It has been fantastic to see him work, see him grow, see him develop, and I cannot wait to see him in a Gonzaga uniform next year. All of this crap will be over eventually, not before the season starts, unfortunately, but it will be over. And then we will get to see Gonzaga basketball. It's coming up less than two months. We will see Gonzaga in action less than two, three weeks before we see them at Craziness in the kennel. Who the hell knows who's going to be on the floor at Craziness, but we're going to at least see some of this team. And then again, the future is bright with somebody like Dune Johnson coming in so we can celebrate and rejoice in that, even if we're in the midst of what has been an agonizing off season for Mark Fuey in the team.
