On today's show, the bullpen and defense just cost the Dodgers. Another game they absolutely could have won as they dropped their series in Miami. Freddie Freeman doesn't look like himself, but first, the Paula has arrived. Three games into his major league career and the number one prospect into Dodger's system has already given fans a glimpse of why this organization thinks this kid could be special. There was one cat that they weren't willing to trade in the Tarek school trade and it

2:05was post-Wede, the Paula. Travis, yesterday Sunday in Miami, he didn't just get his first major league hit. He absolutely crushed the ball into the second deck in that ballpark in Miami and it was a huge sigh relief. No hits in his first two games. He did get on base on both. He's looking good in his first series. It's just the first series, but I like what I'm seeing from Hoseway to Paula. Yeah, I think the best part in light that whole broad was absolutely annihilated. Just crushed right after he broke his chain. He's like, all right, enough of this stuff. We're going to hit the upper deck in Miami. That's great. The best part for me, Harry, was how comfortable he looks in the big leagues. Sometimes you'll see a guy come up and even guys that are incredibly highly touted the way that the Paula is. The Paula is not a guy that's just kind of, hey, we needed a guy just throw him in there. This is a guy that from the time he's entered the Dodger system, even at the very low levels of the minor league, has had a very bright spotlight on him. He is, you know, he's next or however you want to characterize it.

3:08And sometimes when those guys show up, the stage gets very big for them. The stage gets very, very different from what they've used to. The major leagues is different than everything else, right? It's different than high school, than college, and minor leagues, then all of a sudden, that gap and he didn't hit AAA. He went from AA all the way to the big leagues, but that gap from the even the highest levels of minor league baseball to the major leagues is big. And he looks completely at ease. He looks completely comfortable. He seems to have a pretty good sense of the strike zone, which usually doesn't come along right away. So what an incredible debut for the Paula, just a really satisfying moment for him, for his family, for everybody. Because he looks like he's been waiting a long time to get here and he does not look like he's willing to go back anytime soon. He just, he showed up ready to go. It's really fun to watch. Yeah, the kid is 21 years old. He signed with the Dodgers back in 2022, added to the miniken, and you've seen his rise

4:08quickly. You see his numbers in AA and he's crushing it. He's either one, two or three, and pretty much every major stat in the minor leagues in AA. And this never had happened with the Dodgers since they have to Andrew Friedman as their top decision maker, where you had a prospect just for go, triple A and jump directly to the major league level. And I had somebody in the comments section over the week asking me about the Paula saying, like, so what happens after Show Hayle, Tony returns, does the Paula return to AA? Does he go to triple A? The baseball seasons down there in the minor leagues will be done by then. So, so, Suede Paula, there's a very good shot that he remains with the big Lee Club from here through the end of the regular season. Show Hayle, Tony will have like five games before the end of the season to be able to come back from the injured list. That is if he's ready, if he's at a comfortable level to go out there on the field as a DHA and Depala in the first two games, he was a DHA in the last game.

5:10He was out, able to play in the outfield for six innings for the Dodgers and a tight game. was taken out of the game in the sixth inning and by recall correctly. So you were able to see him just get his feet wet. I just won the first game last the last two, but the Paula you look at his numbers Travis and it's gonna say two hits in this in this series, but he got on base often with the walks and that's the part that you brought it up. He just looks comfortable up there at the plate where he's not just swinging wildly hoping that he's able to get a hit to get on base. He's comfortable enough to be able to go out there and get through a good at bat and get on base with walks and I love the swag too. After his first walk just banging his chest like yeah, I did that. No, it's great like there's there's nothing about him that looks like the moment is too big for him. Now there's a long way to go playing the Marlins in a situation where there's not a ton of pressure is one thing having to go up against the team that is fighting for a playoff life the way that

6:10San Diego Pottery's are which is coming up. That's a little bit different. So we'll see how he looks and an environment like that. The environment of Dodger Stadium will be different than the environment in Miami and in Cincinnati, which is gonna expect next, but from what we've seen so far, I'm very optimistic and what it does is that when Otoni comes back, it allows them to consider other options. And you know, who else goes out I think is it's not necessarily going to be the Paula. It could be somebody else and you know, not to not to pick on any of the other young players that the Dodgers have brought up, but look at the difference. And again, I Harry, you know this. I know this. I think most of our Dodger fans know this that it's been one series and baseball is a cruel, cruel game and things can can change really, really quickly. So with that in mind, when you see Hassan Kim, when you see Alex Friedland, when you see somebody said, they look a little uncomfortable in the batter's box like, okay, man, I don't know if I belong here. I don't know if I'm gonna get hits here. Like I'm not gonna stay here. This guy is just like, man, I've been waiting my whole life for this.

7:13Hurry up. Let's get this started because I have no plans on going back anytime soon. And that stuff is infectious. That incredible enthusiasm really kind of does permeate the entire organization and quite frankly, you know, and this is both a good problem to have, but a problem nonetheless. The Dodgers haven't had anything to get excited about. All season long, they're just, they're just doing what has to get done so they can get to what's about to start here in about two or three weeks. The best part of the season, the Dodgers have, you've heard me say this a million times. The Dodgers basically play a six month spring training where they're just trying to get everybody ready for the most important part. And it's just especially for guys like Mookie and Freddie and Shohei and Muncie and Will Smith and guys that have been around the block a million times. It's just, okay, let's go and they're playing hard. It's not that they don't care. It's none of that. But now, of sudden, there's some life, there's some freshness. There's some new things. There's somebody there that this is their first time around the block. And it really does kind of translate to the entire team. So I was really impressed to see him. I was really impressed to see how he did the energy he brought to a team. And the fact that he

8:21looked comfortable is just gravy. It's it's really good news. And he should be very proud of himself. The Dodgers may, you know, may have found their next big guy. We'll see what happens. But what a terrific start. And Travis, you saw his teammates get very excited for him with that home run with this double later in the game, being able to say, Hey, this guy, he's looking good and we're excited about him. And this is something that it's a veteran team. It's an older squad. It's one of the oldest teams in all the baseball where they're not pumping out prospects the same way that they used to in the mid to late 2010s or in the early 20s. Right now, they're just in win now mode. And they've been buying superstars left and right when was the last time that you were this excited to get a prospect out of the triple a not triple a just double a system right now for the Dodgers from the minor leagues. It has been a while. So getting Josueta Paula called up and giving him an opportunity. That's something that Dodgers fans. We were asking about with September callups. We had a wait for

9:21Shohei O'Connor to hit the injured list for it to happen. And now it's like, man, you see we could have had 10 more days of Josueta Paula in the big leagues if they had chosen him instead of Alex Freeland, but they've needed Alex Freeland as well to cover second base with Tommy playing at center. Yeah. And I think the big difference is for the Paula, it's, you know, we've seen guys come up before. We've seen some in particular some pitching prospects come up before that we've been very excited about whether, you know, going back a few years. It's Bobby Miller or Dustin May. And now we've obviously had Emmett Sheen and and Justin Robleski. So there's been some pitchers to get excited about, but really not a position player, a young position player other than maybe Dalton rushing in the last few years and rushing was coming up to be a depth piece. Rushing was coming up to play occasionally. He was not going to jump into that starting line up and stay there. Now it happened ultimately because we'll Smith got hurt this year and last year he didn't really get much time. But this is a little different. This is a highly touted minor league prospect who was coming in and was going to play and was going to play for a very

10:27defined amount of time, you know, with Otoni down on the I L, but was going to play. It wasn't going to be, hey, we need a left field of tonight. Just throw him out there and we'll see what happens. This is a you're going to have four or five at bats tonight is the D. H. And we're going to leave you out there for the better part of a week and a half two weeks. Let's see what you got and so far he's been awesome. And Travis Cal Tucker on Friday. He had a great game three hits, including a grand slam and somehow he'll sweat a pall over the weekend. Got on base more times. He had four walks, two hits against Miami Cal Tucker three hits, one walk. Do you think that he might be feeling steps behind them? And where's like, Hey, man, you better keep it, keep it up. If not, you got a young buck waiting behind you. It I mean, it's, it's possible. I mean, I look, I, we've talked about how you could find a way to leave Kyle Tucker off the roster. I really don't think it's going to happen. I just, I don't think that, you know, unless he gets hurt, which I guess is always a possibility. But if the Paul continues to play really well and Tucker continues to scuffle,

11:29you know, and that Friday night game was clearly his best game as a Dodgers. So hopefully that gets him going a little bit. Time, you know, we'll see. We're running out of time. But it does open some interesting questions. I, I, I just don't think you can do that to Tucker, even as bad as he's been, but maybe they'll make a hard decision. We've seen him doing before. I think that first series for Tucker, he will be on, but beyond that, I think it's going to be performance based. So let me close segment one asking you our viewer, our listener. Let's be very clear about something. Freddie Freeman isn't having a bad season. He's Freddie Freeman. He's one of the best hitters of our generation. But right now Travis, something isn't right. And we can go back to a couple of weeks and just start thinking the same thing about show Hey, Otani or the eye test just told you something's wrong with this player. The same thing is happening with Freddie Freeman, who has been dealing with a little right knee issue.

15:51And now it's affecting the way that he's been playing. And even Dave Roberts has talked openly about giving him days off. And he's not going to play in today's game. He just turned 37 or eight years old over the weekend. And man, what about Freddie Freeman? What if he's not ready at an as close to 100% as possible when the postseason start, that would be a big issue for the Dodgers boat with his bat, but also defensively and his leadership. I think all of those things are a big part of it. Look, you knew he wasn't right when he started not playing. And that sounds so stupid, but it's really true when it comes to a player like Freddie, Freddie plays every day. Like Freddie takes great pride in playing every day. And I don't mean that he plays most is he plays every day. I mean, he's playing 158, 159, 160 games a year. Like he almost never comes out of a lineup. So when you started seeing him take a day off here and there, that's a real head scratcher for a player like him. There are other players that take a day off a week. And by the way, no shade on any of those guys.

16:55That's how most guys do it in the major leagues. Freddie's a little different. Even as he's getting closer and closer to 40 years old, he was still in that lineup every day. So that he was out of it. I think was your first indication that he just isn't quite right. Then of course, like you said, there's the eye test. He just doesn't look like Freddie Freeman. Now he's still real scary. He's still one of those guys that could give you the best at bat. You've ever seen in your life in the biggest moment that you win when you need it. But he just doesn't look like himself. And I think the biggest way to tell there is a it feels like the strikeout rate is up a little bit. And maybe even more than that is the power isn't there at all. Now Freddie's never going to be, you know, Max Muncie and or maybe, you know, Shoy O'Connie and hit 40 or 50 home runs, but he'll pop one every once in a while. He's going to get, you know, he's Mr. double. He feels like he's got a double a night. And he hasn't even been doing that nearly as much as he has previously. So there's clearly something going on. Here's the rub though, Harry. It's September 14th, right? There's no time.

17:58He's whatever he has, he's going to have in the postseason. And he's going to have to play with it. The Dodgers going to have to find a way to play with it with him. He's going to be in the lineup. He's going to continue to do it. And you just hope that he can kind of grit his teeth for another month and a half and find his way through because there just isn't a lot of time to get those little bumps and bruises squared away at this point. Yeah, you're talking about if he lands on the injured list today, he's only going to have the series in San Francisco to be able to come back before being able to be ready for the postseason. So that the time has ran out for the Dodgers, in my opinion, and do a move and put him on the injured list and to go back to the power situation that you just mentioned. He's had one home run since July 5th. And that same span in 55 games, he's had 10 doubles and he's been batting with a slug of 350. So the power definitely has disappeared from his bat. He's still giving you good at bats. He's still batting nearly 300 in that span,

18:58but he's not the same player that we've been used to seeing since he joined the Dodgers. And like you said, he's more than likely going to reach the 150 game mark if he's, if he doesn't land on the injured list for the Dodgers, which nowadays in baseball Travis, that's like pretty much almost an Ironman. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's like, yes. He, he, this is his, you know, other than he, you know, gets 200 hits a year. He bats 300. He plays great defense. But one of his calling cards is, is that he plays every day. And look, I guess if you're looking for a silver lining, we've seen him be banged up before. We saw it in the World Series a couple of years ago. And what did he do? He hit one of the most iconic home runs in the history of the Dodgers. He was the World Series, you know, MVP was just knocking down walls. He was all over the place along the way. So I'm optimistic that he will give you what he's got. But look, I guess the other thing is too, a lot of other teams have a lot of guys that aren't 100%. They've been playing for six months. This is just the way that it goes. And you just got to kind of dig deep and grind through these last couple of weeks of the regular season.

20:01And they know that adrenaline bounce that you get when you go into the playoffs. I think we'll help the Dodgers more than anyone else for the very same reason we just talked about a second ago. They've been just grinding it out for six months that they just have not had that easy breezy season. Or even, you know, the stuff that makes you lock in and compete, they just, they haven't had to do that lately. So I'm optimistic, but when you have a team full of older players, you're going to have bumps and bruises that show up at the worst possible times. And this is kind of where they are, but I'll still pick them. I'm still optimistic. I'm on the same road as you when it comes to that, but at the same time, for example, you bring up the 2024 World Series. I feel that it's less complicated to do that when you have the finish line right in front of you. When you know that you're less than a week away from finishing your campaign and being able. So relax. But it's and also back then he was 35 now he's 37. Two years makes a huge difference in a man's body, especially when you're a professional athlete playing over 160 games a year.

21:07And your body starts breaking down. Look at you. Hilton he's 32 and now it started happening with him as well. The part that worries me a bit is the defense. If your knees a little bit banged up, I know you play first base, but even simple stuff. We saw that play at first base yesterday against Miami where you're like, man, that small hesitation. Was that a reason why the Dodgers weren't able to get the out at first base to at least calm things down late in the game? That's a part that I'm like, you know that you Freddie Freeman has bailed the Dodgers out a lot of times defensively at first base. Now, well, that aspect of the game be available for the team. But there's a lot of things going on and Freddie Freeman is one of those guys that a lot of variables around him. But you always are constant with him and that might not be the case right now if his body isn't responding. Yeah, I agree with you. I, you know, this is where your, your raiders work, my Rams work. I think like there are ways to get you across the finish line if you need it. And we're getting closer to that point of the season where you wouldn't do, you know, what you might need to do in, you know,

22:10April, May, June, July and August. But once you get in October, there are some ways to make stuff go away in short periods of time or at least be a little bit more tolerable. And I think those options have to be on the table at this point. No doubt about it. So let's tell segment two asking you checking out our show. You look at that game in Miami Travis and they didn't get blown out. They didn't get dominated for nine innings. They didn't lose because they couldn't hit. In fact, they had a three to lead entering the eighth. They were up four to two entering the ninth and they still walked out of Miami with the defeat. And the frustrating part for me is seeing him a chin give the Dodgers again a good performance on the mound six for the second. And the Dodgers couldn't take advantage of that. Yeah, no sheen has really done a good job since getting another look. You know, since he they brought him back from the minor leagues. He has basically told them I do not want to go back. I like to stay up here with the big league club and I think he's making a pretty strong case to stay with them.

25:18So, you know, obviously, I don't think he's going to get any starts in the postseason. But I do think that he's pitched his way into a relief role there. So good on him. The flip side of that is you don't feel particularly great about what's going on down in your bullpen. I think one of the guys that I, you know, at least I was feeling pretty good about Enrique Hernandez or excuse me, I keep doing that wrong. That's Kike. And Gardo Henriquez is the guy that I'm trying to talk about. And you know, Gardo Henriquez was a guy that had looked pretty good. He did not look very good yesterday. Tanner Scott continues his up and down and up and down. You just never are quite sure what you're going to get. You don't hate it when he comes into a game, but you don't love it either. It's just one of these. Okay, let's see. Let's see which version of Tanner Scott you're going to get. So they're going to have to tighten up their bullpen. I, again, you know, this is something that we've talked about a lot. A lot of the guys that you're seeing in bullpen roles now will not have them in the postseason. You're going to get Sasaki back. You're going to get some other guys that are going to be, you know, pushed into different roles. And you're going to, you're going to really tighten up that bullpen rotation to a certain degree.

26:20But Enriquez is going to be a part of it. Scott is going to be a part of it. So those guys need to start getting a little bit sharper as we get closer to the finish line. And shoot, man, it's, it's right there. Like now is the time to put your best foot forward because there just isn't a lot of runway left. And the Dodger's defense, they got to tighten up their screws as well. There's there was a couple of errors that that hurt the team. Mookie bets with that while throw to second base. That should have been an easy out. And you give Miami an extra out. They take advantage of the opportunity. And in a very close game, that can end up being what dooms you in a game. And fortunately, this right here is in a game where the Dodgers still have a two and a half game lead for second place in the national league. They still have a massive lead lead. And they're going to be clinching the national league west this week, potentially as early as Wednesday, depending on how the Padres do over there in Colorado. If the Rockies are able to sneak one or two away. But the Dodgers, they could just sweep this series in Cincinnati. And with that, they would be getting the national league west crown.

27:22It doesn't matter when it comes to standings. What it matters is to like, Hey, man, look at that mistake you did right there. You got to make sure you make that throw right because in the playoffs, you given a team an extra out Travis. And that might be the difference between winning a series and losing a series. And when you lose a series in the playoffs, game over, you're done. Yeah, I know. I always go back to the World Series against the Yankees a couple of years ago. And the Dodgers took great pride in kind of looking down their noses at the Yankees. Like he's like with all the sloppy play that the Yankees had and they had a bunch. And you know, you you look at yesterday's game like you mentioned, you look at the box score. The Dodgers didn't have any errors, but that doesn't mean they didn't make mistakes. And the difference is winning a series and losing a series. Like you just said, is who makes fewer mistakes, right? The games are almost always close. The games are almost always tight. And if you limit the other team to just the 27 outs, and I'm not talking about just an error that shows up in the box score, it's about doing all those little teeny tiny things right. And for the last shoot, decade,

28:24the Dodgers have done all of those little things really, really well, probably better than anybody else. And everybody in the organization deserves a great deal of credit for that. But right now, they're not. They they have not done the little things well for quite some time. We've talked about they haven't played good baseball. Really, it kind of started right before the All Star break. And it's kind of been the same thing through most of the second half. They're winning games. They're a good team. But that light, that little extra layer of crispness, of sharpness, of attention to detail, hasn't been there the way we've seen it before. And like you said, just a minute or so ago, that's the difference between advancing or going home. And they're going to have to clean that up. And the bottom of the ninth inning was the perfect example, Travis. A grounder over to first base. Ready Freeman has trouble making the play, Tanner Scott doesn't break immediately towards first. And there's no out at first base. Then Miami they drop a bunch in the third baseline. That was perfect. So now all of a sudden you're up by two, but you got runners at first and second base with no outs.

29:26And then Sonoma hits a double to left field, tied ballgame, just like that. And four pitchers later, Agostin Ramirez sends it. He goes yard against Brock Stewart game over at the Dodgers, lose this game. There's still 13 games left for the boys in blue. Two and a half game lead for second place. But also two and a half games behind Milwaukee. So there's that little motivation of like, we're not just playing to get the divisional crown. We're playing for more at the moment. And hopefully they pick it up right now in this final stretch. I know they got that motivation with Hoseway to Paula. It's like, hey, this kid is bringing extra energy in the clubhouse. That's a pro, but also a pro is actually playing for something. I know that at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if you're the ones who hit the two seed with the talent you have. You can look at last year, even through the wild card. They were able to win the championship. But the less complicated the path, the better for this team, especially if you can take three days off for this team of games for a veteran team, that would be good to avoid the wild card for that reason. I think that's the biggest reason to ball.

30:28It's just those extra few days to kind of get your body as right as you possibly can. I have all the faith in the world that they will tighten up and be better. At least maybe I'm just being optimistic. But that rest I think is real. They could go in any ballpark at any time in any scenario and win a series. I'm not really worried too much about that. But to your point, you'd rather be home than not. If it's just a matter of here or there, I'll take here. Thank you very much. But we'll see. They're going to win like you said. They're going to win the division. They're very likely landing that number two spot. They'll get the first couple of rounds at home, which is where at least the first round they've got to win to advance to the next one. But the rest, I think, is the most important thing available to them. And no days off for the Dodgers until next Monday. You got four in a row again Cincinnati.
