BONUS DROP: Finding the Truth with David Pakman

0:00You should have a board in your son. Wow. Not the nicest thing to wake up to if you're a father. He's a pioneer of independent digital media, a man who turned a local radio show in Massachusetts into a global news empire. So I had Joy read on the podcast. And I was pretty direct with Joy. I said, Joy, are you an opinionist or are you a journalist? And she said she was an opinion journalist. You buy that? Well, I think that the truth is there's really no totally unbiased arbiter of what's going on. And so I would much rather people acknowledge, even if I'm a reporter or a journalist, I still allow my perspective in then to sort of pretend that it is zero opinion and just the facts because that's really a difficult thing to do. And there's a lot of consumers unfortunately who don't sometimes know whether they're watching news or opinion on some of the cable channels.

1:04They're on 24 hours a day. Yes. As far as they're concerned, there's the news hours and then there's the opinion hours. But to the average viewer, you turn it on and there's a thing that says live swirling and it all kind of looks the same. That's the problem. That's right. Because the viewer, they have to find out which is which. And so I would much rather people just acknowledge their perspectives and their biases. I don't consider myself a journalist. I do opinion flat out. I'm doing opinion and I'm very honest with them. Good for you. Good for you. And because... And I don't mind that. That's fine. As long as you label yourself. 100%. But some people left Orren and Wright try to play the journalist game when it's not. Yeah. I think that's a huge problem. And it would be less of a problem if we had a more informed population as far as media literacy. Just very basic things, like I said. Am I watching news or opinion? What are the biases that it play? What advertisement relationships might be influencing?

2:04These are really basic things that I think kids should start to learn at 10 or 11. And they're not being taught. You were born in Argentina? That's right. You're the son of Argentinian Jews. Yes. Boy, that... I'm fascinated by that. And I... It's wonder if your parents ever talked to you. First of all, everybody has to understand that many Jews fleeing Europe went to Argentina. Yes. During the 1930s and the 20s when Hitler came to power. That's right. And it was also a cauldron after the war for Nazis. Did your parents ever talk to you about that kind of conflagration? Absolutely. Yeah. No, there were both a lot of Jews who found save haven there sometimes wanting to come to the United States. And when the doors were sort of shut at different points in time, opting for Argentina. Now at the time, especially, Argentina's economy was much stronger than it is now. And so it was really a pretty good option when it wasn't possible to come to the United States.

3:06But then the second layer to that, which has quite assorted and kind of ugly history to it, is that there were Nazis as well, some that we know about specifically and some that are suspected, but it was never definitively proven. And I don't want to say that the Jews and the Nazis were living side by side aware of each other in Argentina. But they were there. And did they... Were the Jews aware that there were Nazis there? You know, contemporaneously, I don't know how aware they were. Now we know about this. But at the time, I don't know how well known that was. Yeah. And of course, there was the great Adolf Eichmann episode. Yes. An incredible story that involved, you know, subterfuge. And the story is unbelievable where Eichmann was caught after a long period of observation with a fake vehicle breakdown on the side of the road, which was actually Masad agents. I mean, it's an incredible story. Yeah. Classic Masad. The way they were able to do that. Which by the way, they were only looking for them for him for like 15 years. That's right. That's right. And in fact, it led to, Elal, the Israeli airline, used to have a direct flight to Buenos Aires.

4:11As a result of that, because the Masad agents were dressed up as flight attendants, that led to a diplomatic problem where Elal was no longer allowed to fly to Argentina. So how are you getting along these days with Caroline Levin? Well, we don't have a direct release. Or Don Jr. Yeah. They... You know, one of the shocking things that happened during my vacation is I woke up. And Donald Trump Jr. and Caroline Levin had retweeted some attacks on me. This is not where I wanted to be today. This is not where I expected to be today. But Donald Trump Jr. and Caroline Levin are coming after me. They're coming after independent media. And it turned into Donald Trump Jr. going after me with Caroline Levin boosting it. Here is my tweet on screen with the tagline, Sick People. And there's a degree to which you see that. And it's like, oh, I've made it in a way. That's interesting. They're paying attention to me. But it does unleash a significant amount of hell upon people who then start sending me threats.

5:16People who try to find family members information. It's not a pleasant thing. Unfortunately, I was out of the country when it happened. So they now try to look up your family? Yes. Yes. And there are times where family members, including my dad in one case, got an email. The last time Don Jr. tweeted something about me. This is very aggressive language. I'm just warning everybody. You should have aborted your son. Wow. Not the nicest thing to wake up to if you're a father. You know, I had you married by the way. I didn't even read about that. I'm not married, but I have two kids with my partner. And she and everybody really has you to thank for the fact that I have no kids I don't know about out there. Because when I was home from school sick, I would watch the wheelchair. And I would say, I don't know how all of these people are getting into this problem. But this is a problem I don't want to have.

6:16And I don't have that problem. Yeah, I didn't even ask you about that. So why have you decided not to be married? You know, this is this is going to generate a lot of a lot of hate mail, I think. Listen, for me, I don't really love the idea of the government lawyers and accountants involved in my relationships. It's that simple. Oh, I see. So there would be pre-nubs or there would be tax situations. It could be all of the above. Yeah, it just doesn't seem to me. It's enough just being in the relationship. Why bring in all of these other powers? How long have you all been together? 15 years. Wow. And there's never been any heat, no pressure on you. You know, there was some pressure building. But then we had the kids. And the kids really, who can think about marriage now with kids running around, you know? Yeah. The timing was really perfect. Yeah, I have a child who has a fiance. I wouldn't know whether they're getting married or not.

7:16And does that worry you? No. No. It might have worried my father because he came from a different generation. Sure. But, you know, a lot of people live very happily together without the judicial blessing of marriage. I agree with you. I'm going to show her this clip that we have your blessing. Okay. In the case of On par or off the rails. Yep. Do you think a David Pacman Netflix special, special, the political comedy crossover of the year, On par or off the rails? I think that's on par. That's okay. I think it depends who the comedic counterpoint is, but I think it has potential. Okay. On par off the rails, the red socks are the best team in baseball. Well, depends what year you kind of asked. Not lately. You know, I remember in 2004. Are you a fan? I'm a fan. And we snapped the curse. Sure. And I remember it was 11 p.m. and the red socks were down three games to nothing against the Yankees.

8:20And then I hate to say it. It was the biggest choke in baseball history. Right. When the red socks came back to win that game and then three more and we know the rest is history. Are you upset about Alex Cora? I am not. The players seem to be. You know, I stay out. I actually, I'm, I get enough heat with my political takes. I stay out of the sports takes. Okay. On par off the rails. People reading the headlines, but not the full article. On par off the rails. Completely off the rails. First of all, I am shocked. I shouldn't be shocked. I come from this environment. Sometimes the headline has nothing to do with the article. Yeah. And you know, it is true that sometimes the headline is chosen by the editor. Not by not by the. Oh, it's a New York Post. I would hope that the guy who's been paid the most money at the paper is the headline writer. Right. No, I think and listen, this is on YouTube. This is a big thing because we all are playing this game where we're trying to generate interest in our videos with interesting headlines. And I always tell my audience, watch the video before rendering an opinion.

9:22If I see a comment two seconds after I've published the video, I know you haven't watched it. You're reacting to the headline. Yeah, I, I come from an era where we wanted the promotional announcement to be better than the show. Right. You know, I've talked to authors about how they feel like sometimes when they do a lot of interviews for their book, it hurts book sales because they're kind of giving all the main points of the book in the interview. It's kind of similar to what you're saying. In the case of On Power Off the Rails that Argentina has the best skirt steak in the world. That's absolutely on par. Absolutely. I was just there and had beautiful skirt steak. That's the beef is still good. The beef is still good. The beef is still good. On Power Off the Rails being a girl dad makes you a better person. Absolutely. On par. You know, it makes you a better person, but it makes me much more worried about the future of the country, much more worried. Why? Well, I now, things that were theoretical before about what women face in society and the

10:23things that they have to navigate are very practical now. They're very real. They're, you know, certain things are 10 years away from me right now. Certain things are fit.
