Blizzard of '93: Alabama's Worst Snowstorm

0:00Here's more Birmingham news for March 12th. On March 12th, 1993, the Blizzard of 93 slammed Central Alabama with 13 to 17 inches of snow. It still holds the record as the strongest snowstorm in state history. Road shut down completely, leaving folks stranded everywhere. Emergency shelters open fast, with reporters noting 15 inches on the ground and two already up and running. In space huge hardships, light passengers stuck overnight on a stalled bus after emergency services couldn't reach them. After eight hours, one with a sick baby turned to a WVTM 13 news crew for help. The crew headed toward Brookwood Medical Center on US Highway 31. Along the way, Vistavia Hills firefighters stopped them to transport a pregnant woman in labor. Conditions worsened, stopping the news truck short of the hospital so a firefighter carried her the final stretch to safety. Archival footage shows how the storm tested everyone involved.
