Birmingham & Jefferson County Team Up for $1.9M Road Safety Project

0:00In Birmingham today, March 2nd, Birmingham City Council is teaming up with the Jefferson County Commission on a $1.9 million dollar project to improve safety on Edwards Lake Road. The main fix involves removing the center turn lane which drivers have misused for passing and widening the road into two clear lanes. This partnership is key because the road crosses both city and county lines leading to past coordination headaches. Now they can tackle the whole stretch at once, including full repaving and new striping. Residents have raised alarms for years about dangerous crashes caused by illegal passing in that turn lane. Counselor Clinton Woods highlighted how scary and accident-prone the situation has been. Earlier this week, the city council approved its share of $550,000.
