Birmingham Hosts SWAC Football, Track Events

Birmingham City leaders just approved hosting two Southwestern Athletic Conference football games at Legion Field over the next couple of years. The first matchup between historically black colleges and universities kicks off on August 26th with the second set for 2000, 27. Meanwhile, the city also greenlit the 2027 NCAA double, a Division II track and field championship at the Crossplex. These events build on Birmingham's growing ties with the SWACC. Local leaders see a big economic boost from the influx of visitors filling hotels, restaurants and shops. Counselor Hunter Williams called it a win that keeps stacking up for the community. This falls at 3-year deal from 2022 through 2024 for the SWACC Classic, where Jackson State University. Faced off against other HBCU teams, the city covered up to $300,000 a year for those games. With these new commitments, Birmingham positions itself as a prime spot for more HBCU sports action ahead.
