Birkhead & Thompson Win Durham Primaries, Push Community Policing & Court Access

0:00From Durham, this is your March 4th update. In Tuesday's Democratic primaries in Durham County, North Carolina, Sheriff Clarence Birkhead and Clerk of Superior Court Amina Thompson crushed. They're challengers with huge margins. Birkhead grabbed 85% of the vote across all 58 precincts. The first black sheriff here since his 2018 election, he plans to keep pushing community policing and mental health efforts in the county. Jail. Backed by groups like Friends of Durham and the People's Alliance, Birkhead beat a retired warden who now works in school safety. He shared online that serving the community feels like a true calling with plenty of work ahead. Meanwhile, Thompson easily topped her opponent and declared victory around 10 p.m. at an election party. First elected in 2022, she stressed her push for better court access, smart record keeping, and fair administration. No Republicans are running for sheriff this fall. So Birkhead heads to another four-year term with no reelection limits in the state.
